Tom: These fancy houses & aristocrats are absolutely horrible & should be punished. Also Tom: *flees to a fancy house to seek shelter & for aristocrats to protect him* Don't get me wrong, that point in Irish history is terrible, but there is a lot of hypocrisy in his words and actions.

@ I think there was a bit of love, but it was mostly to get away from that lifestyle. I wasn't a fan of Tom either until after Sybil's death. But not very realistic, the Earl of Grantham is supposed to be a veteran of the Boer War. A rough business I am certain, he hires his handicapped valet b/c of some perceived obligation as a fellow veteran of that war. Are we supposed to assume that he gained no insight into the harshness of this world from that experience? What is the bond which ties him to his valet? I've always wish they'd explored that issue. I find many dubious points in the development of this story. The Earl can't really be a stupid as he is made to seem in this story.
@ReflectedMiles
@ReflectedMiles 3 года назад
@@VictorLepanto I don't think there is any implication that the Earl doesn't understand the harshness of the world but simply that he despises the Irish tactics in adding to it, including the lack of responsibility and character the he finds in Tom in the matter, given the demonstration that Tom hates his enemies more than he loves his wife and child--patriotism being, as they say, the last refuge of scoundrels. I think the Earl's view is one that most of the civilized world could identify with, whatever sympathies there might be for Irish aims in self-governance.

Though Robert was rightfully angry, Tom and Sybil splitting up was probably the best decision. The police were looking for Tom, not Sybil, so she would have an easier time getting out of there. Lets be clear here England was as guilty of savagery in this situation as the rebels if not more so. There restrictions on the Irish people in their own country no less and the harsh and cruel punitive actions that England took in response made the situation a hundred times worse. Parliament was unfairly biased against Ireland and with their poor stewardship of the country especially in regards to the response of the Potato Famine it was inevitable for this kind of thing to happen.

Poor Tom, this only happens because the writer had to find a way to get Tom and Sybil to Downton permanently. He had to make it so he couldn’t go back to Ireland, ever. It showed how Tom had to face the realities of the worst side of the movement to have a free united Ireland. I understand why they despised the Brits, who treated them horribly. I’m just glad that Ireland and Britain are no longer fighting so people can live in peace there and pursue their own dreams and live in safety from terrorism and British police brutality. It’s pretty amazing how Ireland’s economy is doing so well now, thanks for technology and jobs sent over there, often from American companies. They had such a bad situation for their college graduates for so many years with few jobs for them. Knowing that area and Europe in general, I am SO VERY GLAD that my ancestors came over to the US to make their lives here.
@amberanime
@amberanime 5 лет назад
Whats wrong with europe? I live there and it's a pretty good place to live in comparision to most other places in the world. US included if all the stuff I read/hear and see about what happens there are true... The US scares me to death.. I'm relieved I don't live there very frequently. Same with Russia or a country where religion is still a forced/pushed on you thing or any country where you don't have the same rights as a gay person compared to a straight person when it comes to merriage and having kids (or rights in general). Or any country where women are expected to be housewives/mothers. Nothing wrong with being either of those of course. There is something wrong with it being forced on you or pushed on you. Most places in the world suffer badly from at least one of these things. Where I live it's not perfect, but we have freedom in religion, freedom in sexuality and the same rights apply to all, women can persue whatever they want safely as well (Sadly that doesn't mean they all do, but that stems from a problem thats a problem across the whole planet, not just this place) and our healtcare is pretty decent. Also US has terrible gun control. One of the worst ones I've heard off in the world honestly... but hey to each their own I guess? If your happy where you are then thats good. Happyness is importand after all and where you live does play a part in that, so good on ya. Meanwhile I'm glad my parents changed their mind to move there before I was born. My mom stayed there for a few weeks, found it horrible, and returned here. A decision I'm gratefull for to this very day as well especialy when I hear her experiences there. So I guess perspective and one's point of view matter a great deal in this. Perhaps if our positions where swapped so would have been our opinions. or maybe we would still feel the same we do now. i find that interesting to think about.

@@amberanime Happybidr was referring to the Europe of that era and not of today. It was quite a different place at that time. If you live on the European continent you will know that. Naturally, it was different depending on the country, but much worse was ahead. Especially if you were Jewish, Romany, homosexual or were of a political persuasion that did not agree with the ideals of Lenin/Stalin, Franco, Mussolini and Hitler. Hell, even today, if you are unfortunate enough to be Belorussian and disagree with Lukashenko then you are not in a fortunate position. Yeah, if only they didn't have a massive housing crisis in Ireland right now, with exorbitant rents and house prices driven up by foreign investors and a lack of regulation of the property market, meaning that accommodation is utterly unaffordable for increasing numbers of Irish people. It's also has a terrible healthcare system that successive governments have failed to fix and the cost of living is high by Western standards, so it's not quite as nice a place to live as you think!

Look at this in another light: Robert is a Tory who sits in the House of Lords, who were actively supporting the Anglo-Irish aristocrats in their measures to suppress Irish independence measure by hook or by crook, and those aristocrats who had their house burned were most certainly actively politically involved in essentially overseeing death squads who not only destroyed the property of much less wealthy Irish but actively tortured and killed them. To lecture Tom about respect for property, savagery, or harshness is the height of hypocrisy.

He "taught" his pregnant wife Sybil, to "cover his tracks" so HE could escape. And in all of this, he never told Sybil the truth of who he was and his part in the planning of and participation in all of this. And then she (his pregnant wife), the innocent party in all of this, would be left behind, covering his tracks, and risk being arrested, so as to "not disappoint him".
@libbydavis
@libbydavis 3 года назад
I kind of get where he was coming from. Personally I would never do it myself but here's my reasoning. If you where ever stuck in a situation where you might be sent down,away from your wife and your possible child,you would want to escape because you love them so much. He clearly felt the world for sybil and new that it would be unsafe for her to come in the dark,in a dangerous situation for a pregnant lady,so let her wait intill it was safe. It was obvious to any police that she did not do anything. Therefore, he did what was best for himself,his wife and possible child. However,he should have told her the full truth of what he was doing,but I see also why he did not. He(particularly)and she have very political minds,and sybil's father disagrees with his views,he thought that if he told her she would be furious and angry and create a divide. I believe that he was allowed to go,if he really wanted to,because of his views,but should have told sybil more of the truth,because we know,however hard the truth it's better to know it more than lies.
