Here's the blotter update:
- Like I said in the video, the stiletto-wielding brutality of the original edp has been convincingly toned down here, thanks to the inclusion of the boozy-fruity notes mentioned in the press release. This is still recognisably Black Orchid - it never fully shakes off that spitefully bitter hiss of cocoa and more saline-like notes - but as an update, it works extremely well. The spiky persona has learned to get along with others a bit better!

Thanks for this great episode and the previous three today . A wonderful way to spend an hour and a half . Black orchid is not a real favourite but I do genuinely really like it but can see how it is so polarising x

I really loved Black Orchid when it launched and wore it to death for 10 years. It was a throwback to the big 80s perfumes which is why I loved it. I started to get headaches from Patchouli based fragrances and had to let it go.

I've never gotten well enough with Black Orchid, It's my best friend's signature scent and it smells amazing on her. However, on me, It smells "negative" I can't describe it. I tried the Parfum verson and It's practically the same experience. As always, loved hearing your take on this :)

"Chocolate cucumber that asks for permission" 🤣. Interesting to hear your impressions on this! My husband actually prefers the chaotic aggression of the original on himself, while i think the parfum suits my taste and personality a lot better.

I couldn’t do the dance with Black Orchid for too long. It’s very jarring and sharp even with my love of heavy perfumes, however Velvet Orchid is a fragrance I never want to be without in my wardrobe. One of my favorite ways to wear Black Orchid is to blend it with Chanel no 5 and that combination gives the same scent profile as Coco by Chanel.

I'm so glad there's someone else out there who's unimpressed by this fragrance. I have only tried the EDP and I don't think the notes balance well - the violet leaf (cucumber) note is strident and the whole composition lacks flesh - it seems angular and thin, rather skeletal.

I don't know Black Orchid, in fact I know very few TF fragrances, and the reasons you gave for not liking the original Black Orchid, describe very well what I dislike about this brand in general - the loudness, the pushing others aside, and the tacky blink. I am pretty prejudiced towards Tom Ford, I admit that. I love your review though 🙂

The parfum is incredible, vampiric and seductive! I do get a velvety booziness when it dries. The edp must have been reformulated as it smells much more subdued than the initial releases. Has anyone also noticed? Exquisite releases that will never justify the price of the private blend line that will not last!!!

I went to a Tom Ford boutique in Covent Garden yesterday and asked for a blotter of this perfume. I love and wear Black Orchid which is lovely on me, creamy, sensual and not screechy at all. I found that this version is identical in the opening and a few minutes after I smelled the rhum note and dry patchouli note that made it more 'masculine'. I kept the blotter and it smells similar but drier and more herbal to me than the original. I can't judge it bcs I didn't spray it on my skin, but as it is very similar, quite pricey and has a garish bottle I wouldn't consider buying it and will stick to the original.

@@Persolaise I don't hate it, but it doesn't spell "posh" as other TF fragrances do. It reminded me CK's Euphoria, another meh for me, but it reminds me a fragrance I actually like, Killian's "Adults" fragrance (the full name is long and embarrassing). It's part of a "grandes surfaces" series Killian developed for Sephora.

I couldn't get along with this one! It's less screechy than the original, but something about that added boozy touch feels a bit stale with those florals and the truffle, like the slightly sad remainders of a decadent celebratory dinner left out overnight.
