He gave us his all doing what he loved to the very end. RIP dear one. I never knew of him until after he died, but now I love him. Sounds a bit crazy, but true.
You can clearly see his right side,he's in a lot of pain struggling to move around we went to the last 2 shows in Boston and enjoying the shows. Not ever realizing the pain he was in. This tour clearly about not letting his fans down. Hindsight looking at this now I would have forfeited my two shows in Boston rather than having no surgery and still be with us. Miss you Tom and your tours dearly.
Tom was in so much pain as we now know that it is a testament to the man he was that, the show must go on. Hip surgery was supposed to be done this month had he lived. You can see him not putting weight on his right leg. He could barely stand up yet he gave the best performance of his life. I am truly in awe of Tom Petty. So cool and so all about his fans. He never wavered. I am still having a hard time with this tremendous loss. To give you an idea of how respected and beloved he was, Bob Dylan rarely says anything yet alone reveal his true feelings. His tribute and moving words about Tom tell you just how he felt. What an amazing talent Tom Petty was.
Well put. I feel so blessed to have seen him in concert, once home in Florida when the band was not so famous and later years. Nothing changed! Tom's obvious love for his audience and his energy were unmistakable. I'll never stop missing him.
Craig Gomez Sorry but this was hardly the best performance of his life, not even close. I’m a fan of over 40 years and I have seen them 17 times in concert, 16 times since 1978 and once with Dylan.. Im not putting them down but I can assure you this was not the best performance of his life by any stretch of the imagination.
This song for me does exactly what I think it intends, keep on swinging and don't every stop until you are ready to. I find it very inspiring, when I hear "like Sonny Liston" I think of my dad, watching boxing and never giving up. Tom Petty, where the fuck did you go!?@@barrytreat5032
You can see how unwell he was around that time. He had a bad hip, knee problems and emphysema. He over medicated just to manage the pain 😢 Still with all that going on he always gave 100% to his fans and his music. Thank you Tom ❤
Every time I watch this video, I cry you can see how swollen his knee is. He can’t even straighten it up and you could kind of tell. Maybe something was wrong with his hip and then you find out afterwards oh yes, there is something mightily wrong with his hip but that awesome man through all that pain would not give up that concert. He said he’s already booked too many people depending on him it’s their livelihood, and he would not let them down. That’s a saint right there.
This is heartbreaking, yet beautiful, to watch now that we know what happened and how much pain he was in. He gave it all to his music, his band and his fans. Wish he had been able to keep a little more for himself. Such a great talent and a man of great integrity as well. The more I learn about him the more my respect for him grows. The music, of course, speaks for itself. One of the greats.
This guy was the best! Love all of his music, my opinion probably one of the best bands ever! And my favorite is Lynyrd Skynyrd.. I was born in the wrong decade! But I know what good music is, and the guys rocked hard for 40 yrs
Never be another. To see him in obvious pain but doing what he was meant to do stirs many emotions. We are so lucky to have been alive to watch and listen to Tom Petty
How did he break his hip ???? God to endure so much pain and sing your heart out to your fans beautiful ....I wish I’d seen him in concert what a beautiful person singer songwriter I love his music Tom will you please sing your loudest beyond the blue to my nessa in heaven beside you 2013 she’d love this song and all your others keep rocking beyond the blue a fan and mom forever crying 04/22/13
Little big man Bob Dylan thinks Pettys a rock god! And he and his awesome band are indeed. . I shed a tear watching this. So damn young. God bless the band and his family.
Pisses you off as you get older and pain suddenly intrudes on your nirvana...your safe place is no longer sacred. Sucks, and the pain pills alter your feelings and choices. We were truly blessed with the great TP and all the fellow Maestros in his band (including Stan the Man Lynch).
you can see the pain he is in. it breaks my heart to see. he really did this song, and I think it is one of his best. I wonder if he knew this was going to be the end and this was his way of saying he was going down swingin. tom loved music and it was his life. I think he knew this was his last tour, the last time he was going to there live with the fans he loved. its been 18 months sense his death and it still effects me like it was today. I grew up with petty, his music was the book of my life. he had a real connection with his fans and he loved us dearly. you can see that here and because no matter his pain he was not going to let us down. there will never be another tom petty and I feel blessed to have grew up with his music and his tours.
In the Petty Doc, Tom talked about how sad it was to watch the decline of Howie. I feel the same way while watching this, Tom was in poor health, still giving it his all. RIP
He fell shortly before the tour was to start, they wanted him to replace it immediately, he refused...said he'd sit in a chair for the tour but he wasnt letting his fans down. Other than that he was great...listen to his future plans in his last interview. He was just getting started.
Great performance from the whole band. You can see Tom’s clearly in a lot of pain. Hard to imagine getting on stage with a fractured hip, it must’ve been agony for him. God bless you Tom, you were a fighter all the way.
Mike Campbell ‘s solo performance in the end of this very cool song is “stunning “spiritual with s little magic. IT GOES BEYOND “.............🎸😎🎸🧚🏻♂️🎸 🎹🎷🥁😏
Saw him many times always a great show even got one of his guitar pics from a show ,,he played way down south in Birmingham, Alabama,, a southern girl in luv with tomy petty greatest southerner ever to ROCK
With out a doubt one of the finest songs ever crafted. The words are breathtaking! I became a believer the night he first presented it live in Irvine. Breathtaking to see it live at Red Rocks. It never gets old.
Ha Joe Walsh played a really epic set, it was too much really it rocked so hard I had to sober up lol. Then Tom Petty came out and I knew they were going to cancel it because I could see the storms rolling in, and after a few lightning strikes nearby they told us to seek shelter, so we got rained on for about an hour, then The Heartbreakers came back out and played this and a very good long set. It was late when the show was over. I wanna say after 1am.
It was such a great show from what I've seen on here! I won tickets to see him with Steve Winwood in 2014. It was definitely a "mountaintop" concert experience for me! One of the best live shows I've ever seen! Petty and band truly loved the fans and all their love and devotion, you could see it in the smile on his face during the whole show. Spreading his arms wide, whirling in a circle, happy and blissful. I loved his bit of banter: "All of you parents here better call the babysitter and tell her you're gonna be home late. We'd love to keep playin' for you if that's alright?" with a mischievous smile on his face. I'm so glad I won those tickets and we got to go. Especially now. Rest in Peace, sir!
Now those are musicians that play for the love of playing and the love of the audience! It sounds like it was an incredible night! Even if it was a little soggy.
Wow ! This is a very powerful song you can look at the pain in Tom Petty‘s eyes with a broken hip to his right leg he was one of the best musicians dedicated to his music to the day he passed away rest in peace Tom Petty I listen to you every day still ( R .I.P ) I still listen to every day❤
Gotta say.....after going to almost 1/2 of the 53 shows....this was one of the highlights of the tour. Yes, after the fact, we know that Tom was hurting, but he put on one of the most amazing shows at Red Rocks that night. They only played this great song, a few times during the tour...New Orleans, Boston, Red Rocks, and a couple more.
flightbag89 thank you so much for capturing this and posting it. (And for all your other videos). I was there 5/29, so I missed Swingin’ by one night... it sucks that the shows were Monday/Tuesday of all days. Hard to commute from out of state and miss so many days. But I’m glad I got to see the 5/29 show.
We were as at this show and couldn't agree with you more. Bucket list show indeed. Excellent job with the videos Flightbag89. I have probably 15 in my playlist
One of my favorite Petty songs! You can see the pain he was obviously in. Still having trouble processing that he is gone. Forever in my broken heart...
One of the greatest musicians of the last 50 years. He came from humble beginnings and from his love of music and fans became one of the best. RIP Tom. Your missed by millions everyday.
I've watched this video plenty of times, but for some reason, today it brings tears. I just can't accept the fact that I will never again experience Tom with the Heartbreakers again. There's just never been another band that brought the awesome laid back vibe that Tom brought. My God, Tom is very dearly missed.
Yes, I agree Scott...there will never be another that compared to him in my opinion, since he was my favorite for 40 years....but, thankfully he gave us so much great music and memories, and even though this video is far from perfect....it captured a very impromptu situation...even with the surrounding noise.....great performance!
One of the few constants in life. 70s, 80's, 90's, and into a new millennium. Styles changed. music changed, politics changed, people changed ... the Heartbreakers were always there. You always knew it was a new Heartbeakers song within a couple bars. It was THEIR sound. The band never succumbed to the times and it always worked. The music fit into each generation. The definition of a great band..Truly missed.
when Tom died part of me died but keep playing this music and their gems why do we really miss them when they're gone love Tom in the Heartbreakers Swingin
Wow, Tom is lit up for sure, but he and the band play and sing so well. Even a broken hip didn't stop the man from making sure his band and crew got one more very long go around. He is a legend.
I was there. This was just after rain (it rains a lot at Red Rocks) interrupted the show. There is a curfew there for finishing your show. This (plus a few substances imbibed during the break, for some band members) energized the second half of the show. Unforgettable and I saw this band over 10 times.
My first Petty show was at Red Rocks in 1983, a week after I graduated from high school and a day or two after the famous U2 concert. Hard to believe this was 34 years later. My favorite Petty song ever.
I saw this concert when I came to New York State . Seen them many times before. When he got to New York State he obviously was on a little bit of medication because he was all over the place on the stage. But even still 6 weeks later he passed. Yes he played this song for me too and when we lost time I cried like he was my brother or husband. My world has never been the same since him. I love this song for a lot of reasons but now when I see him here it just breaks my heart. God I miss this man
The movie that plays in my head when I hear the song would be worthy of an award. If I ever get the opportunity, I'll turn my imagination into a movie. Until then, however, I'll just have to enjoy it by myself every time I hear the song. Sorry folks.
I just can,t believe he,s gone . He has left a wonderful legacy , music etc . Those Heartbreakers and his Family ,,all the great people he,s has left Behind,,, He was just amazing . Hollywood Bowl last song ,,, I can't watch it for crying. , what a wonderful person Phanominal is a good word to Describe him.I know I feel heartbroken. and millions feel the same. It's just a big empty feeling hurting my heart . I keep thinking why why him. I know heaven must surely be a happy place . I know he will Rock and Roll up there, along with all his great buddies. RIP you wonderful man!, Keep rocking man 💔💔💔💔💔💔
Thank you SO much for posting this. We were there. Sat thru the storm eating popcorn. This literally brings tears to my eyes, but that's ok. Blessed and thankful.
Not only was he an amazing musician but was also an amazing song writer. I’ve heard stories where he never swore and expressed great appreciation to his fans. To be a band member and to know Tom Petty must of been awesome. He gave it everything he had every time he was in concert... I’m myself in need of hip surgery and its absolutely painful to try to stand on that bad leg as he is doing when ur hip joint is tore up. I understand the drugs to try to mask the pain...Man we miss you Tom....from Orlando Fl
Such a loss. A great writer and performer. Very few artists develop a style so distinctive and instantly recognizable as to essentially constitute a genre unto itself. We are blessed to have his music still with us.
Tom wir vermissen Dich so sehr, ich hoffe Deine Seele ist im Musikhimmel und ich rufe Dir zu, Du lebst mit Deiner tollen Musik in uns und weiter auf diesem schon zu heißem Planeten
Red Rocks magic strikes again! Probably only the second time this tour Swingin had been played. Was so happy we were able to go to both shows at Red Rocks because they were both very different despite the similar set list but the second night show was just epic! Thanks for posting!
love this song so much for some reason it always comes to me more than any song that I've ever heard if you know what I mean I don't know where I'll think of this song thank you Tom miss you Mike Campbell you're a hell of a guitar player God bless all you guys
Probably my favorite Tom petty song. Last time I saw my father lucid and alive my brother turned me on too this t.p song and it just has stuck with me ever since.
