Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Mary Jane's Last Dance - 1994 09 08

Video awards live performance from NYC's Radio City Music Hall.
This song is one of the 90's biggest success for the band but wasn't included in any album. It was a single for the greatest hits CD from 1993.
Part of intro is missing (and i hate that) nonetheless is the best rip i've seen.

Stan Lynch the original Heartbreakers drummer featured here has such a beautiful feel. This is probably one of his last appearances with Tom Petty and his laidback groove is incredible. Just like Ringo or Charlie Watts he just played exactly what was required for the song, no more, no less.

My name is Maryjane with a lower case j one word. I was 13 living in my hometown South Bend In. Honestly this song freaked me out when I heard the first verse. My Mama took off to California when I was 4 leaving me to be the little Mama to my brothers. Made me strong. I did have my battle with drugs and alcohol like many but I couldn't let my life end like this song. So I found my own spirit self..Made me wiser...Noe everyday I learn something new.

@andrewfurst5711

They improved on the original version, here in this live version. And they don't seem to have done it this way again. I agree that it's so great to see Stan performing it live, in one of his final appearances with the band. He's so good on the studio and live versions, and frankly throughout his entire time with the band. Steve Ferrone was a very precise drummer, very talented, played whatever he was asked to play. But the band lacked Stan's creativity and "feel" for the song, once he was gone (he was out of the band before their 1995 tour, so this was near the very end after 18-19 years).

One of the great songs ever written about drug use and why people do it, even against their own better judgement. The hitchhiker having to "hit the last number and walk(ed) to the road" sums up the loneliness that is too often part of our existence and why we sometimes do terrible things to ourselves.

Was the chick who introduced them on helium? That was weird! Great upload. Thanks. The last of Stan on drums. Always thought he gave them an added punch (although Steve Ferrone was a good replacement). I'm surprised this one has so few views? I'm guessing many prefer the surreal video. Nothing like live when it comes to these guys. Happy New Year (if possible)!
@andrewfurst5711
@andrewfurst5711 2 года назад
Intro was by Rosanne Barr (sounding like Minnie Mouse). The band was never as good once drummer Stan Lynch departed, which was a few months after this performance. Replacement drummer Steve Ferrone didn't have the "feel" for these songs that Stan had, played too heavy and too mechanically, never even had considered himself a rock and roll drummer anyway (at least before joining Petty & The Heartbreakers).

Yeah it’s A minor pentatonic it first position (or the common one everyone knows) and then just move it up an octave. There’s a lot of double stop-bends and stuff like that so make sure u get those sounding right.. it would hard to tab on here but like -7^(7)7p-5-- --------/----7^(7)7p-5-- --------------------7- Middle strings BGD string with b on top in my diagram It willl be too hard to tab here sorry just listen and play around with that Am pent. That’s just the very very first bar of the like main part ur probably thinking of where the 2nd guitar comes in (on the record) for the long solo/outro thing
