I feel like I want to do this but my coach and other coaches like Larry Cheung recommend 80% weight on the trail leg then shift the weight forward right before the downswing starts. I feel like it’s possible to rotate and stay over the ball with no sway with the weight in the trail leg. Doesn’t this method cause a loss in pressure caused from the shift of proper sequence? .... not sure... do you teach this method?
@555Trout
@555Trout 3 года назад
@@kevinarbogast9309 Hi Kevin. This is such a complex subject. It's hard to know where to begin. I think the style Tom is teaching here certainly has a place. For occasional players, less athletic, physically compromised, etc. Good teachers, and I'm certain Eric would agree, don't just teach one method or style. So yes, this approach is definitely in the mix. I'm gonna throw a concept out here because by what you said I think you might benefit. I distinguish between "pressure shift" and "weight shift". And often I find developing golfers don't do this. Wt. shift is when mass above your feet moves positioning it in different places above the feet, and pressure shift is when you de-weight a leg momentarily so pressure moves dramatically to one foot but no mass moved above . So if you were standing in place alternating knee flexing pressure would be momentarily moving to each foot at 100pct to 0pct, yet no mass would be moving above. As opposed to moving upper mass from over one foot to the other. Ok, hope you got that. Imo, there is very little "wt shift" in a great golf swing but immense "pressure shifting ". So, what Tom is teaching here does not and should not eliminate pressure shifts . Think about that for awhile. Its the knees my friend.
@kevinarbogast9309
@kevinarbogast9309 3 года назад
@@555Trout yes! Makes total sense! That helps a lot actually. When I practice “pressure” shifting while keeping weight centered with proper sequence things go very well. I don’t think I would get the same result if I didn’t have the help of ground force generated by the pressure.
@555Trout
@555Trout 3 года назад

This is seriously brilliant. I took a lesson a few months ago, and the instructor kept telling me, "Get off the ball. You need to get off the ball." He kept advocating for this big shift away from the ball in the backswing. I kept thinking to myself, why? It just didn't make any sense to me that I was adding this additional moving part to my swing. I hit the ball worse than ever after that lesson. I need less of that nonsense and more Saguto and Cogorno in my life.

Eric, I really commend you for doing what you do. You're very open-minded when it comes to the golf swing, and you value the input you get from other teachers...even if their philosophy doesn't totally marry up with your own. That seems like a simply thing to do, but it's surprisingly lacking out there in the real word. This particular video is made for me, as I simply cannot (no matter how hard I try) take a divot in front of a golf ball. I'm going to give this a try!

Very impressive the way Eric accepts other methodologies. I learned S&T 3 years ago because of sciatica. Most of the time now I use it for my irons. And a hybrid swing for driver. S&T keeps your head in the circle. All good golfers tilt. Many elite golfers don’t stack. But they’re hitting hundreds of balls a day. And they still keep their head in the circle albeit with some weight shift. Many mid to high handicap golfers would benefit from stacking and tilting. You just need to have an open mind. S&T is not snake oil. Try it ...it might work for you. So many ways to skin a cat. And straighten that trail leg on the way back 🙂

Great video. I am a fan or both Eric and Tom. I know there was not time to address this, but what Tom is saying -- keep the weight forward -- fits in with some of what Eric teaches. For example, keeping the weight forward allows the hips to turn more, which in turn allows the shoulders to turn more and the arms/hands to travel further and, as Eric has talked about in the past, this allows your chest to open up, to extend, as you approach the top of the back-swing. This creates a wider arc and more club-head speed without the need to lunge or throw yourself into the ball. Thus, the weight forward can be the foundation of a rhythmic, smooth swing with tempo that looks beautiful and hits the ball a long way without looking like you are putting too much effort into it. Watch any decent pro and you will be amazed at how easy they generally swing and how far the ball goes. I think it is because of the weight shift Tom and others advocate as well as the other great things the weight forward promotes. Again, you guys are two of my favorite.

Interesting video and I can see how with irons having the more weight on the lead side promotes a more downward blow to the ball. I could also imagine there may be some tendency to try to help the ball up on the downswing. My other question is how does this work when it comes to the driver and longer clubs? Would love to see more on this in future videos.

Great video as always! I’ve been tinkering around with weight forward over the left insole not so much for contact but actually swing path improvement. It seems with weight forward it’s a lot harder to swing outside-in which helps a ton with path. The farther back the weight goes the more outside-in the path seems to go (at least in my tinkering at the range).

I noticed that Tom has an exaggerated weight shift to the front leg at address vs Eric. It does not look like any other golf address I have seen but trying this exaggerated position at address definitely helped me. That with visualizing the wall on the left side and head in circle have been great tips. My question relates to a trigger to start my back swing and how to bend the front knee. I found it helpful to start my back swing motion by starting to bend my front knee as the trigger which forces the shoulder movement down. Since my front leg is flared out and the weight is mostly on my front leg the knee bend also goes to the left or straight out instead of inward towards my back leg. Tom kinda is doing it like this but Eric's knee shifts a little towards the back leg on the back swing. I see the old time golfers doing this even more dramatically(Sneed). Am I seeing it right and how do you feel about triggering the back swing this way and the way I am bending the knee? Thanks
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 11 месяцев назад
Hey Frank! Yes....you are seeing that right. Mines goes in a bit more to help me turn my hips more. The lead knee NEEDS TO go down....the tilt to help keep inclination to ground. In CAN (doesn't have to) go in....that helps the turn I personally like to see the lead knee bend down and slightly in so the kneecap is right under the lead hip More on that here that may help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pPlAIUbGTOY.html&pp=ygUaRXJpYyBvZ29ybm8gaGlwcyBiYWNrc3dpbmc%3D ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MI9XfoDBr00.html&pp=ygUaRXJpYyBvZ29ybm8gaGlwcyBiYWNrc3dpbmc%3D

Why not pre set the the ball contact and then go backward instead of starting to learn the backswing. Whats right and wrong in golf? I won a competition with strong forward press and rapid hockeyswing, then I tried to be a golfer and trained the backswing in two years. Now time for downswing, and I will definitly try this. Im always doing this for my wedges. Eric is NO 1, so pedagogic and just focusing on showing, not just talking😉 Tom has a point. Great

I mean, get the feeling of correct position when hitting the ball, then how it looks half way back in downswing, top position, and then how to get the top position from backswing. Vice versa as normal way of learning that starts from backswing. Just a thought.

S&T is a great shortcut to a great swing...and it's hardly "new" given Hogan's swing, along with Snead's and others. Hogan advocated a weight shift to the right side, but in reality, his left knee dipped down (weight on the lead foot) and his right leg straightened. Plus, even though he had a slight shift to the right, at the same time his butt moved probably 5 inches towards the target at the top of the backswing which pre-loaded his weight to the left. S&T simply pre-positions the weight onto the left side to eliminate excess movement. S&T is so easy that I feel like I"m "cheating". I never had a 5-inch bacon strip divots on wedges before with boatloads of spin. Plus, I have added at least 30 yards to my driver, maybe more, and I'm hitting 8 irons 160 vs. 140-ish with my "old swing". Great job Eric to introduce Tom and also S&T which is what many of us have already discovered and never looked back. There are still guys at my club who swing with a right side weight shift. The same one's who complain they never improve, but they're good at buying new clubs to "solve the problem". LOL.

Is this method applicable only for iron shots? Thanks
@Ecclestone71
@Ecclestone71 3 года назад
I guess it’s very good and reliable for Irons to achieve a constant contact and AoA 3-5 degrees down to compress the Ball. With Driver I guess the weight in setup is different and you need more side bend to shallow and hit up 3-5 degrees. Good Question!

Great video, 2 quick questions, does this go against your teaching point (which has helped me a lot in the past) of equal and opposites? Or no Because your weight/hips stay forward throughout the swing? Also, as someone that tends to move off the ball too much, could this also work with driver/3w? Thanks as always
