I've seen some pretty stupid comments here, people say he didn't intend to hurt prestia which probably is true but he deliberately went for a bump at a bad time. 3-5 weeks, the only thing you can do is learn to be more careful next time
This is the reason why I look both ways when crossing a one way street- you can put rules in place, but there will be one moron who has a complete brain fade
There has to be a send off rule if someone is hit high the player that done it has to stay off the field until the player that was hit can come back on if he can't the other player cannot come back on and that team play's one player short , otherwise what's stopping a player being taken out in a grand final the rules have to change
I've recently moved to Australia and have absolutely fallen in love with the game. I go to a game most weekends, and watch all the highlights. As an ex-rugby player, I am pretty shocked at the lack of a send off rule in AFL. I know that you guys have decent banning system by a match official post game, but the lack of a sending off rule basically means that a player can commit heinous and malicious fouls on other players, effecting the out come of the game, and only be punished after the fact. I do think that a send off rule should be considered when there is a clear act of foul play with intent to harm (or, at least, if a reckless or needless act causes danger to a player) - it could be judged by a TV official who has access to all the replays and angles, because I know its a big decision. Rugby has a yellow card, which is a ten minute send off, and a red card which is a total send off. Just something to consider. Remember, it's not about refereeing the outcome, it's about refereeing intent. In my opinion, the main reason that this rule hasnt been introduced is because, it seems to me, fans and players bloody hate the umpire, and so are hesitant about giving them any additional powers. The game is clearly very hard to umpire (fast moving, large distances), but there is a severe lack of immediate protection around player health and safety. Just my opinion as someone new to the sport, but has played a lot of other sports.
i wouldnt say Geelong had a planning session to get Stewart to take Prestia out. But its not unfathomable that they mentioned to hurt him in the contest if you had the opportunity. This was clearly a snipe by Stewart.
Clearly a snipe. Looooolz. The previous week Stewart did the same thing and was lauded for it. They showed clips of players from Bombers letting players run around unchecked and said you need to smash into the player. He stuffed up the timing but the hit was always on and he should always do it.
That’s afl for you. It’s been happening for ages But it doesn’t happen often nowdays, having Prestia of for 3 quarters isn’t worth losing Stewart (the best defender in the league) for 4 weeks
if it was dusty tigers be defending him ,so what stewart takes his 4 or 5 weeks has a nice long break primed for finals ,henry goes back to defence , danger and parfitt to come in, no real great loss
Was off the ball and completely reckless leaving Prestia concussed. Obviously Stewart was not looking to give him a concussion but he had intent to put some hurt on I'd hope he gets 4 weeks at least.
It’s a tough one, tigers fan and dion had been our best player for a few weeks in a row and the message was probably just to rough him up legally when they could and Stewart got into an awkward position and just for unlucky with that message in his mind and meatball being so short aha
@@Sharkie_szn probably should have. It wasnt intentionally high, but yes of course he intentionally hit him. So he should have too. I'd expect every player that plays for my team to lay that bump every time. He did the exact same thing the week before against Adelaide and nearly killed a dude. Commentators went on about how excellent it was for half a quarter. But I agree. He spazzed the bump and did and rightfully got weeks. And I agree if he had got 6 that's also not ridiculous. But then again if it was a PF ala Cotchin or Maynard he would have been right to play.
I totally agree with you. Every time I see this I wonder why a brawl isn't happening. Disappointed with the Tiger players non retaliation. Stewart should have got five weeks for this snipe.
@@Sean-me4fv the ball was gone Stewart choose to hit him he didn’t need to do it nor should he have. I like Stewart he is a fantastic player but this was cowardly and unnecessary and he should face the heaviest possible penalty. If someone did that in the stands they would go to prison for a few weeks. Funny how a white line changes the rules for afl players and society at large
@@BobbyL808 As per the rules, a player can bump (otherwise known as hip-and-shoulder) any other player within 5 metres of the ball (not just the player in possession). In this case, the player he hit happened to be in the wrong position to be bumped correctly. This does not mean he was intentionally hit in the head. Stewart cannot control the movement of the other player. Zero intent. No cowardice. Just an accident.
@@BobbyL808 It's permitted in the rules to hip and shoulder another player as long as they are within 5 metres of the ball. Yes tackling and bumping etc would be assault if done outside of the game.
@@nathanf1934 I agree footy has gone soft but this is one rule that actually helps our players. A majority of the players you watched from back in the day would’ve ended up with serious damage done to their brains. Hits like these are unnecessary and could end up killing someone.
@@dizm3000what do you mean 'hits like this'...... He went to bump Prestia's head got in the way. It was accident, you pansies need to stop going on about it
It's a shirt front every player every team does it unless every one is blind it was a shoulder shirt front I don't barrack for any team I just like watching football and I go to heaps of games give me a break look 3aw is talking about a red card honestly some games are won by umpires you don't have to Einstein to see this I'll shock everyone all umpires should be given a lie detector test after the game because I don't care what the AFL says umpires can be biased at times
The AFL needs to get serious about this sort if conduct that puts the player at great risk of permanent brain damage. A one year suspension of the player and the offending side loses the 30 points on the scoreboard would be appropriate. A suspension of just 2 or 3 weeks for a deliberate and dangerous action that helps the side win is a sick joke.
Geelong are a team of superstars not just a team like Richmond is, a team who will play for each other, Trents bump on Liam Shiel during the GWS v Richmond GF, classic Richmond, courageous but fair, behaviour like this belongs in the Octagon, cheap and nasty, to be quiet Frank pun intended the team was bought with money under the table by the late billionaire Frank Costa, Geelong are like the school yard bullies who are wealthy good looking, they have every chance of succeeding but always fall misreably short because deep down their greed and selfishness an want for the spotlight an to win at all costs always becomes their undoing that is why Geelong will not win a GF for a very long time!
To all you psycho’s out there!!! It wasnt deliberate.. there was no “plan” to take prestia out!!! Prestia didnt have eyes on the ball. Thats why it happened the way it did. Now chill.
Yep he only knocked him unconscious when he was unprotected. I will be surprised if the grub doesnt get a Nobel Prize after your BS coach praised him as the Mahatma Ghandi of footy.
As much as I don’t like Richmond, that bump was totally unnecessary. I know footy is meant to be a hard game and the boys from Geelong are usually rough & tough (which is certainly not a bad thing), but Tom Stewart is a grub. I hope he gets rubbed out for a while.
Premeditated and deliberately both Stewart and the Cats, the plan was to remove the dangerous midfielder this tactic was common during VFL games, especially grand finals, and Prestia could possibly suffer permanent brain damage this strike is the same as a one-punch king hit to the head needs to be the signal to get these morons out of our game definitely 6 weeks suspension
You have a crystal ball and can see into the minds of Stewart and the Cats, can you? Also, If you set out to snipe the opposition best player, you wouldn't send your most important player to do it, would you? You'd send a lesser light. A thoroughly flawed argument
The thug deserves at least 6 weeks. Not in play, not a football action, deliberately ran past the ball to knock out a defenceless opponent who wouldn't be expecting such a cheap shot. It's something out of the 70s/80s which has no place in the modern game. Simply a dog act!
How do we know Richmond player wasn't coming in hard to do same thing to Geelong player yeah Richmond so innocent over the years they have had the most filthiest players so don't grumble if if was Martin whom is really a crap player every team has 5 or 6 players much better than the sook he never goes in f I r the ball hangs around the packs and always in the open by himself and he is your best give me a break sooks
Was an accident, went to bump him , Prestia's jaw was in the wrong place at wrong time. This shit happens in footy and it always has, stop changing crap cause of a concussion. 0 weeks... play on Stewart.
Are you mental? "Prestia's jaw was in the wrong place at wrong time"??? More like, Tom Stewart ran forward and bumped him rather than moving out of the way. He chose to bump and badly injured someone and he knows that, he'll get 3-5 weeks which is fair.
Reckon a 3-4 week stint is coming for Stewart. He probably could have disguised it better. But Prestia has always been abit of a lame academy award type player.
You're right mate, as unlucky as it was. Trying to prevent this type of thing is turning AFL into netball. Shit happens, he got clipped by someone running at him, get on with it
Sure sure guys, but how would you feel if that was you who was knocked out so badly, you could barely walk off the field after 2 minutes. These players have lives outside of football, and we can’t ruin them just for the enjoyment of the bump
It was an unwarranted bump absolutely, but in no way was it with intent to cause harm to Dion, that just doesn’t line up with Stewy’s values. It was disheartening to hear the Richmond faithful booing Stew for the rest of the evening, utterly disgraceful. It’s unfortunate that our star defender will miss a few weeks due to this incident, especially given we face the reigning premiers in a couple of weeks.
