I've been a Caps fan basically since birth, and have never been as happy in my life as when we won the Cup. I've always defended Tom Wilson... "he's just a big guy, he doesn't realize that he can't make the same hits as other guys", "he just needs to adjust the way he plays a bit"... no more. I will not defend his actions anymore. This is completely unacceptable. I am ashamed of my previous defense of him. He just punched a guy in the back of the head that was lying prone on the ice... for NO REASON. Looking back, I can no longer defend any of his other hits or questionable moments and I am disgusted with his behavior. It's not just this play or this moment that brought upon my realization, but also reading the comments by fans of other teams, rewatching his plays with less of a biased lens, and the fact that he was voted the second dirtiest player in the league by his fellow players. It breaks my heart because I recognize that he was an integral part of why we won the Cup in the first place. Does that mean that as a team we weren't good enough to win without a man physically injuring our opponents so they couldn't compete? Heartbreaking. I'm still a fan of a good, clean fight and don't want to remove that element from the sport. But that's not what Tom Wilson does. This level of violence rarely has implications just within the sport. I fear for those in his life. You look at him and you get the feeling that he could snap at any moment. He needs to take a good, long look at his actions, his choices, and his life. He also needs to get some sort of anger management counseling. The level of rage, condescension, and disrespect he shows his fellow human beings is more than troubling. As has been mentioned, he is a good player, which makes his poor choices even sadder. I'll forever be a Caps fan, but Tom Wilson is an old container of chicken hidden in the back of the fridge. I can no longer ignore the stench and it's starting to rot all of the vegetables in the crisper drawer. Come on Tom. Be better.
I have no bias in this. But I've watched the clip a bunch of times... you said he punched him in thr back of the head for no reason..... The reason was Buchnevich kicked at the goalie/puck more than once. And he hit in the in the shoulder not the head. IMO if you kick at a goalie with your skate you've got that coming to you.
@@BAReeve83 I’ve rewatched a few times more closely now based on your comment. From my viewing it looks like Van Riemsdyk #57 pushes him into the net, also puts pressure on the back of his knee so he loses his footing and he’s trying to get his balance and additionally he’s trying to kick the puck into the net without knowing where it is. He barely touches the goalie. As a hockey player I understand the rage you feel when you think someone’s messed with the goalie. If that was the case and Wilson took issue with it then he can fight the man. When he’s on his feet, not when he’s lying facedown on the ice with Wilson on top of him. I can see that it was more of a shoulder punch than a back of the head, I concede that, but regardless. You shouldn’t be punching someone anywhere on their body when they are prone on the ice unable to defend themselves while you are pinning them down.

@Greased Up Deaf Guy care less!!?? Hockey is one of the most progressive sports. It went from absolute mayhem prior to the 2000's to a game about speed. Every single team in the 70s, 80s, 90s had 1 or 2 Wilson type players. Now there's only like 4-5 in the entire league. It's not even entertaining anymore. Most new players weight under 180 pounds now. It's figure skating with some contact.
@Greased Up Deaf Guy I've played for over 20 years and still play. I'd admire the skill, i've never said i didn't. However, not everyone has the talent and skill of speed and finese. Hockey has always been a sport with multiple aspects of skill. Physical play is a skill as well. With being physical, you also play that fine line of being dirty. Maybe if you had ever played the enforcer role, you'd understand that. Every hit will not always be clean, the game is too fast and too emotional for that. You've stated your opinion, i'm the opposite, I enjoy the emotional and physical play. YOU enjoy the new era of skill hockey, that wont be the same for everyone. Take a look at it from another persons perspective. I'm just stating the physical aspect of the game is still important. Why do you think playoffs are so exciting?? Because the guys play with a chip on their shoulder.
@Greased Up Deaf Guy I think we probably agree on most of it. I see it from a different perspective, as the sole reason i was chosen on every high level team in my life was from my physical ability. I didn't go out there and only want to hurt or crush people, but hitting guys was what i excelled at. I think by removing guys like Wilson from the league may have a reverse outcome of what you want. If you really go look through all of Wilsons hits, 95% are probably clean or borderline. 5% are dirty. But if everyone gets suspended every time a little cheapshot like a punch to the head with gloves on is suspendable, hitters and physical guys will be removed from the league. In turn, this will create rats whom go around spearing and slashing because they do not fear any repercussions from guys like Wilson. Just my 2 cents, i could be completely wrong in my thought process.
@Greased Up Deaf Guy try that Michigan move in the 70s you would be picking up your teeth one by one. Thats hot dog shit. Its faster because you even touch a guy you get a penalty. Dont know how many times you see a penalty called and you watch a replay and go oh ya ok. He tapped him on the arm with his stick type shit. Ya want too see skill from the old days watch Alexei Kovalev do some shit or Kent Nilsson hitting the cross bar at will from all over the ice.
