The Tonex Pedal From IK Multimedia is really shaking up the guitar world. But Did you know you can make a KILLER GUITAR RIG by combining Tonex Pedal with a Line 6 HX Stomp or HX Stomp XL. Control the Tonex from the stomp and integrate it seamlessly into your patches and Snapshots. You can have a different amp and cab on every snapshot or use it as an array of drive pedals. Connecting the TONEX to the HX Stomp gives you the absolute best of both units and connecting them via MIDI and in the effects loop gives you incredible control.
In this video I walk you through my live HX Stomp/Tonex setup, show you the routing MIDI commands and everything else you need to know in order to build your own guitar pedalboard rig with these mega powerful processors.
IK Multimedia launches a brand new hardware pedal to run its amazing Tonex Plugin. it is called the Tonex Pedal! With this little beauty you can take all of your amp captures with you on your pedalboard and integrate it with your existing pedals or multi effects to make a killer live rig to either DI into a mixing desk or run into the back of a poweramp!
Tonex has for some time now been integrated into IK Multimedia's long established "Amplitube" software. But this represents a huge step forward, out of the studio, out of the laptop and onto the stage with captures that are indistinguishable from the real deal and have in many RU-vid videos been shown to be better than the competition offered by Kemper and Neural DSP's Quad Cortex.
The Line 6 HX Stomp is the latest addition to the Helix family. This deceptively small unit packs a formidable array of features, many of which are identical to the original Helix amp. With over 300 effects and models, a simple interface and a rugged gig-ready enclosure, the HX Stomp is your all-in-one performing rig!
Helix 3.50 Firmware
The Helix 3.50 firmware update for Helix® and HX® hardware devices and the 3.50 software update for the Helix Native plugin introduces an entirely new IR-based speaker cabinet engine. It includes 20 guitar cabs and four bass cabs with a choice of 12 microphones, and you can change their angle, position, and distance in relation to the cabs. You can even drag the mics around in space for easier and more exact placement when using the HX Edit 3.50 application. Despite their increased power, however, the new cab models only utilize roughly one-third to one-fifth of the DSP as the cabs in version 3.15 and earlier due to the improved Helix Core, freeing up additional DSP for other purposes. There are also five new amp models, seven new effects, a Dual IR block, and other improvements.
Helix Modelling Technology
The Helix set the world ablaze upon release and went from strength to strength with the release of the Floor, LT and HX FX versions. The HX Stomp looks set to take it to the next level, borrowing crucial effects and features of the cornerstone Helix models and sticking them in their most compact unit yet.
The HX Stomp uses the exact same HX Modelling technology as the flagship Helix guitar processor. When you consider that it’s approximately 80% smaller, that’s quite an impressive feat. Run up to 6 processing blocks simultaneously, with over 300 effects and models to choose from. This includes the Helix, M-Series and legacy Line 6 collections.
Versatile & Fool proof
It’s designed to be used in a number of ways. Given its size, it’ll fit neatly onto any pedalboard - a feature-packed multi-FX unit. Combine it with other modelling or FX units to reach new tonal heights. Or go all-in and use it as an all-encompassing guitar or bass rig - yes, it can handle it!
With stereo inputs and outputs, USB connectivity and expression pedal compatibility, the HX Stomp has the capacity to become the centrepiece of your setup. You’ve also got an industry-leading 123dB of dynamic range for ultimate depth and responsiveness - it’ll handle any gig or session you throw at it.
To top it off, it’s super easy to use. Its straightforward interface combines clearly-labelled knobs, buttons, LED-lit footswitches and a 320 x 240 colour LCD screen. All in all, the HX Stomp is going to change the way you see your rig!

I figured out with midi a way to be able to change up to128 (if need) separate presets on the tonex, using the HX stomp as the controller, with different effects on each of the HX stomps presets, its great

That was so helpful. I’m gonna give it a crack through my helix floor. Because that’s a dream combination. Those tonex amp captures paired with helix fx is just perfect. Hope I can pull it off. Question: I use the helix floor as the interface as well. I don’t run it into a soundcard. But if I try this with the ToneX, taking it off ‘live’ and onto ‘interface’, it goes from perfect to just awful. I can’t be the only person experiencing this surely…

@michaeldees1521
@michaeldees1521 Год назад
Do you have to use Snapshot Mode on the HX Stomp for the midi changes to work? I'd like to set it up so that I can create different HX Stomp presets that use Tonex amps but with the IR's I have loaded in my HX Stomp. I have the midi cables and commands set up like you've shown but when I change presets on the HX Stomp, the Tonex always goes to Bank 49. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.
@robertzimmerman970

Same here works initially but after switching a few times it defaults to 49c - did you find a solution?
@paulburton5150
@paulburton5150 Год назад
Nice clear explanation of the set up. Out of interest - are you finding the ToneX amp models significantly better than what you get within HX Stomp itself? Or is it more a case of wanting captures of your own amps? Do you think it effect of the ToneX amps is reduced when playing through an external cab compared to out to a mixing desk?
@leonbrownmusic
@leonbrownmusic Год назад
Tbh the tones I set up are fairly similar with or without the Tonex but I do notice a lot less mush in the mids with a good capture. Feels like a more "fundamental" sound with a good one. Running it back through the loop of the HX stomp I do hear some deterioration in quality but not much. Using it as a preamp to a valve Poweramp and cab should sound great but you are back to the problem of using a mic in the real world and spill past the pa and into open mics. Front of house will sound way cleaner than you are likely to get with an amp on stage. Then you can just use floor monitors or in ears for you.

Thanks for the video, I use my Helix Floor with dual amps in parallel, it sound amazings in stereo with more dynamics when rolling off the guitar volume and tone controls, it's so versatile, I'd like to see if the HX Stomp and Tonex could do this using the S/R path in the HX Stomp. If it can it'll be a smaller footprint on stage. Appreciated any pointers. Thanks Leon.
@leonbrownmusic
@leonbrownmusic 2 месяца назад
You need 2 Tonex to run a dual amp setup but tbh if you want slightly different tones left and right just use an amp only capture on the Tonex. Load your ir into stomp and run slightly different IR's left and right. The cab makes far more difference to the tone than the amp.
@steve_one
@steve_one 2 месяца назад
@@leonbrownmusic Ahhh, so it isn't possible to use an HX Stomp amp in parallel with the Tonex amp in the S/R?
@leonbrownmusic
@leonbrownmusic 2 месяца назад
@@steve_one It is you just put them on separate paths but you are going to have a capture on Tonex that sounds a lot better than any of the HX models. And remember if you have a different sound on each side only the audience members right in the middle will benefit. Much off centre they will only hear one or the other.
@steve_one
@steve_one 2 месяца назад
@@leonbrownmusic Yes, I know what you mean, but I often use 2 x FRFRs next to each other on bigger stages so the sound isn't separated too much. Smaller bars aren't a problem through the local PA as I can mix them hopefully on the HX S, the same way as I am currntly using the Boss GT-1000 which has the mix setting but I'm curious about the HX S for smaller venues which is why I ask. I suppose centre panning on the house mixer is also an option. I've tried a pilot test with Gig Performer and some Neuaral DSP Plugings and they also sound great with dual amps both in my studio and on a medium sized stage. There's not been too much of a problem with the separation for monitoring purposes because of the mixer settings,
@adamdagosto570
@adamdagosto570 10 месяцев назад
What do out output the ToneX to? Like what like of speaker are you getting good results from? Powercab? FRFR? PA speaker??
@leonbrownmusic
@leonbrownmusic 10 месяцев назад
Frfr guitar speakers, in my view, are a waste of money. If you are in a band go direct to FOH. It always sounds better in a mix. To monitor use a floor monitor pointing at your face and away from the audience. Either a wedge or a pa cab on its side. You can have your vocal and other band members in it too. Or use in ears. Nothing messes up FOH sound like stage amps blasting over the top and straight into vocal mics.

Hello Leon, thanks for your nice content - very helpful! I exactly hooked up as you said, but when using high gain amps I get hum just when using the combination of the TONEX and the HX Stomp (nothing in the chain except the FX Loop). When I put the TONEX alone into my mixing desk (using the exact same amp) I don't get any noise. Do you have any idea what could cause this problem? Kind regards Chris

Possibly a ground or power source thing. Make sure both units are isolated.

@@leonbrownmusic: Thanks a lot for your fast reply. I thought maybe there is something wrong within the global settings of the HX Stomp (return output, instrument or line, etc...).
