Chinese is hard because of the tones :-) Indonesian is hard because of the construction of words :-P

Actually I find the tones quite easy :D Yes sure they're a bit tricky, but other challenges are much harder, and make tones look like nothing. But then again... maybe it's because I'm learning Mandarin which only has 4. :)

Mia, teach them the basic ABC from Indonesia. That will give you the idea what makes the difference between english and indonesian pronounciation. The easiest example, letter A spelt "æ" in english but "a" in indonesian. U spelt "yu" in english and "u" in indonesian.

The Indonesian tongue twisters are easier said by Bosnian than by English speakers (same pronunciation). It's also useful to know Japanese because it's also close to the Indonesian pronunciation from what I can hear. My native language is Bosnian, I know English native-level and I'm learning German, Turkish, Japanese and Mandarin Chinese, German in school, rest on my own time. I'm also thirteen years old.

Actually, the main difference between English and Indonesian pronunciation other than the vowel chart is the fact that in English stressed syllables tend to be longer than unstressed ones and appear at constant intervals (stress-timed language), while in Indonesian all tend to have the same length (syllable-timed language).

+Zhang Xin if they are in posiin where they believe the brain is them, they are probably using ways available to them to kill probably victims to get out organs or other reason. evil humans are torturing me. back in history evil humans controlled area started to have a custom of torture. bullying of primitive humans refined into torture habbits back in history there was only metallurigy (although different history from what is described maybe, shorter), and so basically they kept humans who were slaugthered natural birth ratio of a s ort probably.. so lot of humans who slaugthered others, slaugthered male humans at once in high number, so then female humans did not care in such case? maybe several did so they also slaugthered female humans on an area (female going to care so either they are to take organs agreeing with such or disagreeing with such slaugther, but natural birth ratio is close to 50 percent for both gender in tribe of mostly evil humans, and also mostly in the prey humans wich may also be evil if no other tribes available nearby, or perhaps for a while the technologystarter evil used other means without killing growing population of those sewn together..and then stated to other violent tribe that they can take on yet other tribes wich are not connected or somewhat different and weaker looking slightly different) nowadays in a war area in a city if there is slaugther of male victims (although gender can be predetermined actually nowadays), then slaugther on masses during short time period means they either replace a person with a very similar personality and behavior person, or also is female slaughtered. if evil kept up slaughter then why would evil stop is if for example some of their family members died at old age in a disease (given organ replacement probably is not able to indefinitely prolong lifespan alone)

@YummYakitori
@YummYakitori 8 лет назад
What does that mean? :/ I'm currently in Poland and "cleaning" is "czyszczenie" so that itself is a bit of a tongue twister :P I'm Singaporean Chinese but Polish seems fun to learn & I'd love to learn it some day!
@Slashplite
@Slashplite 8 лет назад
YummYakitori It means "In [the town of] Szczebrzeszyn a beetle buzzes in the reed" but I extended it to the city nearby BTW I'm learning Mandarin at the moment haha there are some similar sounds in both languages
@YummYakitori
@YummYakitori 8 лет назад
+Slashplite I haven't noticed many similarities between Polish and Mandarin besides 'ż' being similar to 'zh', 'sz' being similar to 'sh' and 'cz' being similar to 'cz' since I'm still relatively new to the Polish language. Maybe you could point out to me a few more similarities? :P That'll help me in pronouncing Polish because I still find it very difficult to pronounce some place names without knowing if I had butchered it or not. :P I'm currently in Kraków on a family holiday and will be heading to Warsaw in about 2 days' time. Really enjoyed my time in Poland (16 days) especially in the Tatra Mountains (Kasprowy Wierch, Morskie Oko) and in the town of Zakopane. There are many consonant clusters in Polish (e.g Bydgoszcz, Wszystko) which makes it a really hard language to learn. I'm always impressed when I hear people speaking Polish over the local TV channels and on the radio and at such speed! Also pleased to find that there are more and more people out there learning the Chinese language, which I'd imagine, would be quite a daunting task for most foreigners.
@Slashplite
@Slashplite 8 лет назад
YummYakitori The hardest thing for Chinese might be learning how to roll the 'R' in Polish. I think we roll it even more than Italians or Spanish. I'm glad that you visited so many places! There are many more places to see, that are not very touristic like beautiful castles "Zamek Moszna" or "Zamek Czocha" or "Zamek Książ. In Warsaw you must see "Pałac w Wilanowie" (u can get there by normal bus), "Warsaw Uprising Museum" (with Mandarin audioguide!), old city, Łazienki Park and so on. Maybe POLIN Museum. There is also heart of Chopin in Bazylika Św. Krzyża. BTW Mandarin is such a cool language with easy grammar. Its just writing and understanding what people say the most difficult.
@YummYakitori
@YummYakitori 8 лет назад
+Slashplite I agree! Grammar rules are close to non-existent in the Chinese language as opposed to English, where there is a whole range of grammar rules to follow. Chinese is also a very monosyllabic language, which makes pronunciation of the words quite easy. Most Singaporeans like myself regard English as our first language, since it is also the medium of instruction for all our other subjects in school. We are then required to take up another language all the way up to high school, which oftentimes, would be our Mother Tongue (Mandarin Chinese for all ethnic Chinese students which comprise about 74% of the population, Malay for all ethnic Malay students and so on; though there are a few exceptions). Some students may also choose to pick up Higher Mother Tongue (an advanced study of their own Mother Tongue) and/or a third language in Singapore; sadly to say, however, an increasing number of youths here in Singapore have given up on learning their own Mother Tongue in favour of the English language. I do have multiple friends flunking their Chinese exams and ultimately giving up on learning the Chinese language at the end. Your spirit and determination to learn the Chinese language is indeed commendable! And yes - I'll be visiting the Łazienki Park, Wilanow Palace, Old Town etc. when I'm in Warsaw. Poland is a really big country compared to Singapore and I didn't manage to visit a few other cities in Poland like Wrocław and the Tri-City (Gdańsk, Gdynia, Sopot) this time round but I will definitely be making plans to do so in the future!

Fantastic! I love the language videos best. Ben's cute too, you should have him over more. One question one idea: What does a major in Chinese get you as far as employability? My canto is not great but I'm sure there's a tongue twister to be crafted something along the lines of... My older brother teachers nine dogs that nine dumplings is enough dumplings.
@harryginnyalways
@harryginnyalways 8 лет назад
+Ryan Aun probably not far unless you're fluent or have at least working proficiency (HSK5ish). I majored in Chinese and it's my experience in china (a different culture) that's given me an edge so far, rather than my actual language skills (because I'm still not very good)

I enjoyed the dialogue & repartee of the 2 lovely ladies & the "Guai Lo" (just messing with you). It illustrates how complex spoken language can be. Fortunately, Chinese is in written form so all can understand it in that way. If spoken in its myriad of dialects its like a foreign language even those a few mile apart. Pinyin is a helpful tool in learning the language but hardly a substitute. Japanese, Vietnamese, Koreans, and a host of other Asian cultures (perhaps educated or of the previous generation) recognize & understand it even if they do not speak it. So let's give a shot at "How much wood, can a woodchuck chuck, if a wood chuck could chuck wood" You must repeat this 3 times in under 8 seconds.

that part where mia was asked like what makes it sound like an indonesian really got me thinking. idk, uhm maybe cause americans' tongue are used to pronouncing things with and added h or like not reading a letter that's in the word. but indonesians read them as they are. and while americans have like, for an example, 2 ways of pronouncing the letter 'a', indonesian only has one. the only letters that could be pronounce with different sounds would be 'e', u, and y. the first one is 'e' like the word hotel. and the other one is like 'e' in the 'per' of permanent. for u, you'd normally use ut as a vowl which we say it like americans pronounce 'do' but without the d or that slight h in between. or in several words u is pronounce as w. so the letter 'u' would sound like there's a 'w' added after 'u' or the letter 'u' would sound like it is completely replaced with a 'w'. y can work as a normal y like in the word 'pay' or pronounce like 'e' (or in indonesia you pronounce i as e. and e like the e in 'hotel') which sounded like the 'y' in pyramid. but this is totally rare. shoot, i didn't really help did i? hehe. am i right tho?

"Trentatré trentini entrarono a Trento tutti e trentatré, trotterellando." (Italian) Translation: 33 people of Trento entered Trento, all 33 trotting along. This one is really difficult for people who have trouble pronouncing the Italian "r" sound. "Se l'arcivescovo di Costantinopoli si disarcivescovodicostantinopolizzasse, vi disarcivescovodicostantinopolizzereste anche voi?" (Italian) Translation: If the archbishop of Constantinople left his office (the very long word is a playful way of saying "stopped being the archbishop of Constantinople"), would you stop being the archbishop of Constantinople as well? "Fischers Fritz fischt frische Fische, frische Fische fischt Fischers Fritz." (German) Translation: Fisher Fritz fishes fresh fish, (and then the same thing, inverted, you can do that in German, but not in English).
