I suffered as a kid and my parents ruled against taking them out. Moved to Japan in my 20s, to a very sunny environment and had a pretty healthy diet. Had kids there, but tonsillitis still plagued me at least 2x a year. Always had stones, bad breath - I had enough and got them out in my 30s at a Japanese hospital. The ENT surgeon showed me my white-pocked tonsils in a jar and said he'd never seen anything like them. Never felt better and don't regret my decision, at all.
@@ibraheem128Had mine out at the age of 22. Hard recovery! Took 2 weeks to recover. First 2 days were the worst, I couldn't eat! I lost 14 pounds after 2 weeks. But I was in school, and couldn't continue feeling sick with tonsillitis. I don't regret having the surgery. Don’t suffer! Get them out! And don’t wait! Hard recovery when you’re older. Remember, gotta weigh the good, and the bad.
So as a dentist I’m embarrassed to state this wasn’t taught to us in dental school, thank you for the new info… I’ll look into some more scholarly articles on the subject. I’ll also read over the research you posted. Thanks Doc!
@@robwagner7545 that’s terribly unfortunate, I wish more of us could admit when we don’t know something. It’s ok not to know, we aren’t omnipotent. Dangerous to just make things up :/
I really appreciate that as a dentist you are interested in learning more to help people. I would of really appreciate more advice, support and help from my dentist when I was having trouble with tonsil stones. 👍🏽
Dr Berg you saved my life ! I was 260lbs and I am now at 188 and it’s so funny my interactions with people have changed ! When you look good you feel good and people treat you better as well ❤ I am unrecognizable
I have a history of strep throat when I was younger, I always assumed it was the strep that caused my tonsils to get holes in them and food got stuck in there and went bad. I had horrible tonsil stones until I got my tonsils out at age 40. It hurt a lot, couldn't eat for 10 days but I am so glad I got them out, I'm 57 now. No regrets, no illnesses, no autoimmune issues (other than Hashimoto's which I already had).
Same here but at 38. Can’t say though that it hasn’t led to a lot of respiratory problems for me. But I don’t miss the stones or the strep. I was diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency, but never put the two together.
I used to suffer with tonsil stones all through adolescence and my 20s. They stopped forming at some point in my 30s and I could never correlate it, but that is when I began supplementing with Vitamin D 5,000-10,000 IU depending on the time of year. WOW! I never knew this was the reason. Fascinating.
I’m beginning to think it’s hormonal. Because I used to have them in teens & twenties, I’m in my 30’s now and no change in my diet or lifestyle but i haven’t had them in years.
I take 10,000 IU all year. I recently had my D levels checked and they were within normal limits. I think most of us still have that fear that we might be over doing it. That comes from years of propaganda!
I was plagued by painful bouts of tonsillitis all through my childhood and teens, almost monthly some years. Plus these stones would form in between bouts. Then in my 20's I also started getting bronchitis twice every year for ten years. In my thirties I read that there was a link with tonsillitis, bronchitis and dairy, so I gave up dairy. I never had tonsillitis or bronchitis ever again and now I'm in my fifties. My tonsils are very scarred but I'm so glad my dad wouldn't allow the doctors to take them out. I just wish someone back in the seventies could've told me there was a link with dairy.
@@allouttabubblegum1984 A2 milk available in regular stores like Walmart and Kroger (big red letter and number on the carton) may not cause the same problems as "standard" A1 milk.
Sounds like my story - only I had my tonsils out - when I was in my late 20s. I was definitely deficient in Vit D3, but didn't know it. Later, in my 40s when I started supplementing with D3, I got a surprise benefit of having all my plantar and perungial warts go away - on their own, no medical intervention needed! Woo hoo! However, I've never gotten rid of dairy. In fact, I consume more of it now than ever via yogurts and protein powders.
Sounds like my story but I did have my tonsils out. At 41 I recently gave up dairy because I heard it could be the cause of migraines. I haven’t had a single migraine and they were chronic! Cheese was my favorite thing but I’m reading a book called The Cheese Trap about how horrible it is for you to inspire myself to never touch the stuff again.
As someone who used to suffer from chronic tonsillitis, tonsil stones and peritonsillar abscess once every month, I finally figured out what worked for me and now I dont get peritonsillar abscess or stones at all. I gargle twice daily with warm salt water and that clears all the food debris and microbes from the tonsil crypts, thus leading to no more tonsil stones and inflamed tonsils as a result. I also avoid drinking anything cold, ice creams, citrus fruits and anything sour. Hope this helps someone ✊🏼
My grandmother did this every day her whole life and never had a sore throat or throat issue. I however, would get tonsil stones periodically for years and then developed two severe peritonsullar abseces in a one year period. Because they prevented me from breathing and prompted me to go to the ER due to the pain which was beyond anything I’d ever experienced, I had my tonsils removed since my ENT said absences have memory pockets and may come back since it strikes twice already. I should have kept up with the salt water rinse but on the bright side, I’ve never had a sore throat since and will never get another throat abscess.
I suddenly developed tonsil stones for the first time about two years ago. The doctor was just like "yeah, that's your life now, sometimes it just happens". I don't get them as frequently, they randomly appear and disappear, especially in a back pocket in one tonsil. This really helps to make sense of it - thank you!
I got tonsilitis often as a teen and the dr gave me a stupid amount of antibiotics every time. Turns out I just had to cut dairy and sugar, never came back
I had an old country doctor keep me on penicillin for about a year. My illness was due to allergies and a lack of air conditioning in the home. One day while I was sick, I developed a body rash and my mom called his nurse. She came by and told her to stop giving me the penicillin. Even after that happened he continued to push the penicillin. My mother took me to another Dr about an hour away from where we lived. He told her that I was suffering from allergies and I needed to be in an air conditioned home. A man in our church paid for it. ( I will never forget that sweet man) I started irrigating my sinuses and everything started getting better. To this day I am very allergic to penicillin. I do everything in my power to avoid antibiotics.
Same here. Eliminating A1 dairy, sugar, and simple carbs makes all the difference! I'm still able to have A2 milk/yogurt without issue and complex carbs also. If I have a week of indulging on vacation or something, I will usually get one, which reminds me to limit myself.
Raw Dairy should be considered if you can find a Local Farmer or Rancher near you that provides Raw Milk. It has nutrients that are essential for optimum Gut/Overall Immune Health!
I used to get these all the time as a kid. My pediatrician called them "puss bags on my tonsils." He told my mother that he refused to remove my tonsils because they protect me from catching things, and that these "puss bags" (stones) were just my tonsils doing their job. I know it sounds weird but I could actually contract my throat and squeeze those puppies out, spitting them out. It was gros but such a relief to get them outta there. I'm 62, and I still have my tonsils. It is a RARE occasion for me to get stones these days, but it can still happen. Of course I now know that it's my body fighting something so I help it along by taking extra vitamins, getting plenty of sleep and drinking a lot of water. . . and they go away. I will say this though: I've had them SOOO many times that I have scars on my tonsils from them. The more ya know...... 😉
Impressive for anyone born in the 60s to still have tonsils. My four siblings got theirs removed. My parents were in the middle of a divorce so I got lucky - I got to keep my tonsils since their minds were elsewhere!
This obsession with removing valuable organs to the human body because there are some "problems" in them is completely insane. What in the world made doctors think the solution to these problems is to remove the ogran experiencing the problem? Where do they think this problem will go then? How about understanding and teaching people why they experience such problems and actually Curing these problems? Ooh I guess that's not what they signed up for when the many quacks became doctors... At least there were and still are reputable doctors, and now there are amazing people like Dr Berg educating people for free online so we can all live healthier and understand how our bodies work, something which should be taught in schools but never was...
The hubris of doctors yanking organs out. Mine are gone because my brother had ear aches a lot. Remember, you are listening to a Dr. right now. Think about that and all of the fear por n here.

Got my tonsils removed at 45 a month ago. Pain was tough for 6-7 days but you get through it. Now, no more tonsil stones!!!! For the first time in my life I’m not worried about my breath.
You removed your tonsils because the tonsil stones were causing bad breath? Did you not watch the video or are you trolling? I guess what's done is done, but you treated a symptom rather than going to the cause of the symptom. And now, you may end up with more and/or worse symptoms. As other commenter said, bad move. Good luck to you.
I had my tonsils removed, in my early 30's. Best move for me. It was amazing how much more healthy I felt. I had been so sick, on and off, for so many years. Now I'm rarely sick. Best of luck, to anyone dealing with tonsil stones.
@@rickydolphin I was told to expect horrible pain for a good 2 weeks. They say the older you are, the harder it is. I'm not going to say it was fun, but it wasn't the worst thing. For me, when I first woke up, was the worst. You tend to sleep with your mouth open, and so your throat is really dry. Trying to swallow, and get moisture in your throat, was rough. I also ended up with something called thrush. The oral antibiotics the dr's gave, for the tonsil removal, killed the good bacteria in my mouth. Thrush was worse than the tonsils. Regardless of all of that, it was one of the best decisions I've made. My over all health, is so much better now. I do encourage looking into it.
I heard it’s about a 2-3 week long recovery after getting them removed but that it is worth it in the long run. I hope to get mine removed someday too, it’s annoying cause the stones occasionally get stuck in my throat and irritate it.
To anyone who is suffering with tonsil stones/tonsillitis, firstly I would like to extend my compassion. With one of the symptoms being bad breath it can be incredibly embarrassing and affect your life in so many ways. However, keep trying your best to keep your mind on the healing and getting well, relax and keep your environment as calm and peaceful as possible. Get enough sleep as this will really help. So on to the foods that can help your immune system~ what helped me~ 1. Apple cider vinegar drink it in lukewarm water 3 times daily. This will help to dissolve the tonsil stones & get rid of the bad bacteria in your throat and body. 2. Gargle with very warm water with Himalayan salt 3. Manuka honey to help sooth your throat 4. Garlic & onions 5. Ginger/ ginger shots if you prefer to have it juiced. Make sure it’s just ginger with celery or cucumber though. 6. Filtered water 7. A small amount of charcoal or bentonite clay mixed in water once a day. 8. Aloe Vera water pure (without anything else added). 9. Lemons and limes Dr Berg has a video on a antibiotic drink you can make. This is a wonderful remedy~ as per usual he provides the best remedies! Also I get his vitamin D supplement to help. Apart from this it is really important that you rest and relax and calm your mind and body, remind yourself you will heal and get well. I wish you all the best and good energy 🤍⭐️
I developed stones and went to an ear nose and throat dr because I kept getting soar throats. I was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin’s disease..... I wish I had known then what I know now I would have treated things differently and not have had them removed or under gone chemo....... I now have CHF from the chemo....... I am blessed I am still here!
Fun fact. If you've removed your tonsils because of this issue and haven't addressed the root cause, you might feel great temporarily but your body will find another area to target and cause you pain and sickness signalling your attention until you fix the root cause... so while you think you've fixed the issue you've simply put a bandaid over the warning light
Thank you so much for this video Dr. Berg! We opted to not remove our 5 y/o son’s tonsils and adenoids late last year. We have adopted a routine of daily tea with fresh ginger, garlic, tiny squeeze of fresh Meyer lemon and raw honey in the morning and at night. We also try to have him gargle every night with warm salt water. We were already gluten and dairy free, and taking sporadically: cod liver oil, vit C, vit D3/K2, and zinc. We will be looking in to incorporating more of your suggestions and getting him outside early in the morning for more sunlight. Thank you!!! ☀️🤗💗
As a Clinical Nutritionist, I'ver personally experienced enlarged tonsils and tonsil stones as a result of food intolerances (it's NOT an allergy!), specifically from dairy/milk. Eliminating milk from my diet, the enlarged tonsils and stones disappeared within 1 week. Any food intolerances can cause these, not just dairy
My tonsillitis as they called it when I was kid was chronic. Salt water & antibiotics. The best thing I decided to do was remove my tonsils at age 28! Rarely ever sick after that. Don't wait that late! It was very painful...
I take my own tonsil stones out myself. It's a process with a flash light, movable mirrors and long probes to push at my tonsils to pop them out, lots of gag reflex and coughing and tears but I get them out. I do notice that I get tonsil stones when I am indoors more often. I used to save the stones after they dry up, yeah, they are gross. When I sneeze sometimes they come out on their own, I've had them come out when I exercise or even when brushing my teeth. I refused to remove my tonsils because God gave me my tonsils to keep me healthy. Thank You Doc for the info!!
I wet the end of a Q-Tip and work them out of the tonsil using the flashlight on my phone in the other hand in front of the bathroom mirror. 30 sec to a min and they are out
He said, with vitamin D!! And I say, with sage tea. (But not too much- it has side effects) You can gurgle with salt water or natron water every day. You can go to the ear/throat doctor to help you get the stones out (through squeezing and scratching) first.
hOW IS TONSILITIS NOT TONSIL STONES WHEN TONSILITIS IS COMMON OCCURENCE OF TONSIL STONES I am losing braincells reading to this comment. Get a toothpick losen em up then use twiser and pluck em out. Should take you about 3 minutes per stone.
@@Poske_Ygo tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils not stones stuck in crevices in the tonsils. The common way to remove tonsil stones is with pressure thus tonsillitis would actually aid in removal of said tonsil stones.
@@charlesedwards4169 Dude I dont understand whats your issue Maybe the random doctor whatever uses a word tonsilitis wrong But he literally told you what to do to prevent those white stones from occuring. My 8 year old granddaughter was receiving the nasal spray flu vaccine at school unbeknowst to me. She was suffering from tonsillitis monthly for 2 years. They would become inflamed and she would have a week off school. When I found out about the nasal flu spray, I begged my daughter not to sign the consent forms anymore and educated her on what I'd found out about these awful vaccines. My daughter agreed and since my granddaughter has stopped having the nasal spray, her tonsillitis has disappeared. She's not had an attack for almost 2 years now and they were a regular occurance, monthly as I said.
You sound so ignorant. Your granddaughters immune system was working as it should when given a vaccine. Without it she will have to fight off the real flu, possibly needing to be hospitalized or god forbid lose her life. But yeah vaccines are so awful 😞
I've had tonsils stones; I didn't know that that's what it is called. Little white soft pellets embedded toward the back, soft tissue. I'm 57, and I know was in my 20's, 30's, early 40 I think, getting them. Maybe even a little younger. I would pluck them out with a Q-Tip. Some times white residue would come out. It was so nasty and they smelled. I don't have them anymore, thank goodness!
I started getting tonsil stones about 8 months ago. It's been really annoying, every other week just about I cough one up. I found out about 4 months ago I have a severe iron deficiency as well. Your video is the FIRST time I've found ANYTHING that mentions vitamin deficiencies possibly being a cause of tonsil stones. It's always just "poor oral hygiene" or tonsillitis, but nothing has changed about my hygiene habits from before I started getting them to now, and I've never had tonsillitis. I've read at least 15 different articles at this point. Thank you!!!!!
Thank you. You answered another childhood mystery for me. I haven't had this issue since I was a kid but it makes perfect sense now knowing what it was and why. Thank you.
When I used to have dairy I used to get tonsil stones, I also found too much dairy and sugar made it worse. They were bad enough to make me stop eating 🐄 related products! 😂 Also thank so much for putting out all the information you do I've learned so much especially about cancer, sadly my dad has been diagnosed with a tumour but it's given me hope knowing there are possible natural ways to treat it with the case studies you have uploaded.
This is amazing information, I'm a med 2 medical student and this is something they didn't tell us, also I suffer from these at times and I'm also vitamin D deficient, thank you for this information 😊 💜🙏🏾
I would occasionally get those in the morning after waking up when I was insulin resistance. I thought I just needed to brush my teeth & gargle. Did keto lost 70pds reversed insulin resistance/pre diabetes. Problem gone. Wow interesting info. Never knew!
I had tonsil stones in my early twenties, also had chronic strep throat and was put on antibiotics many times until the doctor decided to remove my tonsils when I was 23, taking antibiotics gave me gut issues that took many years to correct! For breakfast every day I eat plain yogurt with chia seeds, 1/4 cup of raw pumpkin seeds and 1 free range organic egg with my vitamins which has helped my digestive system get on track!
I had my tonsils removed in my late 30s for not only constant tonsil stones and infections but also for loud snoring. It hurt like hell for 3 or 4 days, especially when the liquid Tylenol 3 wore off before my next dose, but I'm glad I did it.
I'm 76 and I still have my Tonsils. Which is lucky since they were removing kids' Tonsils all the time, in the '50s... My Mother gave us spoonfuls of Cod Liver Oil, and I grew up running wild in the country... Have always had a wonderful Immune System.
About 20 years ago in my 40's I went to multiple doctors with constant sinus issues and all of them said i had allergies and i was prescribed increasingly stong medications. I had never had allergies in my life. I was getting these tonsil stones constantly during that time and they told me i needed my tonsils out, so i did. Months later i told my doctor i though i had a sinus infection because things were worse than usual. I took a round of antibiotics and then was completely fine. So for two years i suffered a chronic sinus infection, had my tonsils out, and all i ever needed was a round of antibiotics.
😮 I just remembered that you're why I started taking extra vitamin D! It's true that it helps, y'all. And cutting out as much dairy as possible, too. I have always had big ole tonsils, but the one that ALWAYS had tonsil stones shrunk down some. It's been nice. My right one sometimes gets them. Very nice change. Better breath for sure!
Dr. Berg, thank you for your research and sharing this information with us. I do have a question though. Vitamin D deficiency seems to be the root to a lot of issues that you cover, but when you state taking 10,000 - 20,000 IUs, what about the risk of Vitamin D toxicity? Could you please elaborate further on this?
Doctor, @ 4:46 you mention the lower incidence of infection seems to be due to more sun exposure, hence vitamin D production. But lower incidence of infection with sunshine might also be due to higher levels of UV in sunshine…Disinfecting surfaces. Not just vitamin D production
I actually had my tonsils removed because of this problem, and the fact that I was getting sick many times a year, around age 30. Ten years later, one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. No more tonsil stones, almost NEVER get sick. Tonsil removal is a good thing imo.
Great video. The first 10 seconds earned a like from me. There's not many people that dig into the root cause of issues like this instead of treating only the symptoms. I appreciate your view of how to maintain health and prevent these issues instead of defaulting to treating them with surgeries and drugs
I played the clarinet from 4th grade all the way through as a junior. When I purchased my second clarinet well into my 40s... It dawned on me why I was so sick as a child. I never cleared out my clarinet. I breathe in mold for years! yikes! I was out so sick with sore throats for years. I still have one report card that shows me more absent than present in sixth grade. This was back in the '80s, it would have been nice if either a teacher or my parents had checked me and my instrument. At least the things I was putting in my mouth at the time!
Wow, this video is an eye-opener! As someone who has struggled with tonsil stones for years, I never realized there could be a deeper cause behind them. The insights shared here have completely changed my perspective on this frustrating condition.
I had mine removed as a kid and no issues either way. I'd bet oil pulling would get rid of tonsil stones though. It helps me with sinuses and headaches in addition to teeth.
I had mine out 40 plus years ago. before I turned 18. while I was still on my Dad's insurance. Kept getting them. Was never taught any of this. I'm 58 now, I wish I had them back and my gall bladder back.
Hey Dr.Berg I love your videos and they have transformed my health the intermittent fasting and healthy keto, but lately I have been counter seeing a lot of videos that say Fasting is bad for women, it slows metabolism, it lowers progesterone which is needed for fertility, I am 28 and that is something that concerns me, can You please do a Video on this and elaborate your thoughts, would love to hear your opinion on this❤🙏🏻
Thank you. I had problems with tonsil stones for years. But since I started taking D3, Zinc, Vitamin C and (two years ago) k2, I’ve had no issues with tonsil stones or tonsillitis. My daughter has been having problems with her tonsils, though. I’ll let her know what you said.
I remember comming out of winter, one day it was finally nice and sunny out, and i layed out and took the sunlight for a while. Out of nowhere, i got tonsil stones which came out fast. That was the day i realized the sun vitamin D plays a big role in this. Then i noticed, every time my immune system acted fast against an infection, the intrusive infection was casted out as tonsil stones.
I had tonsil stones in my late 20’s and man were they rank! I finally got my tonsils out at age 30 (when it’s considered a major surgery) and my constant tonsillitis and strep throat finally disappeared. I’m part of the generation that did not proactively get their tonsils out as a youngster and so, I went through years of being sick. Apparently my tonsils were huge which also contributed to being sick all the time and trapping that smelly bacteria. I think we’re seeing tonsillectomies during childhood again. Sure would have saved me years of feeling awful and shooting out little balls of nastiness.
After my tonsils were removed my overall health became much better. No more anemia, fever, pain and antibiotics.Never had lung problems for 25 years, even when I had COVID.
I had tonsil stone problems until I retired. A stressful trauma nursing job with too little sleep and iffy diet seems to have resulted in an overactive immunity. My husband had his tonsils removed in childhood. We both got COVID at the same time and mine was mostly restricted to upper respiratory and fever. My tonsils were both swollen until I recovered. They kept the infection from going deeper into my bronchi and lungs. My hubby was not as lucky and developed the severe cough and stayed sick far longer.
Used to get these a lot when my diet consisted of bread. It was so bad! I thought it was just bread collecting in there and forming these stones. I would squeeze or cough as much of them out. Changed my diet, no dairy or bread and I haven't had these for years thank god.

I have had encrypted tonsillitis since I was 4 years old , I just learned to clean them out With a a q-tip . As far as I am aware there is nothing I ate or did to make the little pockets in my tonsils. Oddly after I had my second child my encrypted tonsils stopped collecting and making stones .
By me being in my 30’s doctors refused to remove them. I’ve been suffering with these for years. It’s caused bad breath. & my social life isn’t good because of it. I be embarrassed when people cover their nose when I speak. 🤦🏽♀️
I had my tonsils removed aged 6. I later has acne. But the root cause cause was I'm Rhesus Negative Blood type O. So allergic to most dairy products and sugar. I was Macrobiotic and am now Keto. Thanks Dr. Berg. God bless you 😊
I feel like I’m missing something. Vitamin D can help with tonsillitis, but what does tonsillitis have to do with tonsil stones? Are you more likely to get tonsil stones if you have tonsillitis? The video doesn’t make this clear.
I wonder if tonsil stones are simply the by-product of eating... in the same way that tartar and plaque form. I take cod liver oil daily, but still able to remove microscopic tonsil stones through periodic flushing with an irrigation syringe.
@@betsybarnicle8016 Again, I don't think there is anything to *solve* here. It would be like saying there is a way to solve the need for brushing your teeth and flossing.

I used to get those when I was a kid. Sometimes they would be irritated and when they popped out I would spit them out. They were like cheese bits but extremely stinky when crushed. Stopped getting them in 1983 after starting the carnivore diet. Oddly enough they returned when I tried a plant based diet in 1003. Have not had one since.
I couldn't breath because my throat was swollen, so I told the Doctor about it. He didn't even bother looking at my throat, and he concluded "allergies". Then, I used the Internet and it said tonsil stones. I don't a black light in the back of my throat, and they were glowing like Christmas lights. So I searched about how to prevent them........ Tongue scraping with a tongue scraper, then I started coughing them out, and I rarely get them as of now.
