I agree with Sal’s point on adaptions. The point is to see what we enjoyed from the page in moving form in the movie or cartoon adaptions. Sure, you have situations where you can absolutely reinvent or do your own thing but when there’s a lot of great stories and characters to adapt, there’s no point in changing them

I love Sal, and your guy's opinion is valid in some ways. But I heavily disagree. If I wanted to see the story I just read, I would just read the story again. Adapting things to make a one-to-one copy on the screen is boring. I hate how fans now believe that is the only way to do an adaptation, and will cause mindless dramas because something is different from the source material. The backlash that creatives are getting for dairing to make any changes is stupid. Fuck that. I believe that if you are going to do an adaptation, keep the broad strokes and characters the same-ish, then do your own thing. Go in your own direction. Create something new with something familiar. It's why I enjoyed Full Metal Alchemist so much. You get two animated stories that start from a similar point, but then go in their own separate directions. Or DragonBall Super. The anime and manga both follow Akira Toriyama's notes and outlines, but the events that happen within each plot are wildly different, giving me two enjoyable adaptations for me to watch and read.

this take is also valid but it really feels like (i feel like this happens more with super hero stuff) a change happens just to dumb something down for the audience or just as an excuse for a creator/producer to go "that is my stamp on this characters legacy" And this would be fine if like more people would recognize the original books or if the publishers wouldn't change stuff to be like the movies. Its like if after Spider-verse people were like 2099 is a super buff angry Spider-man that protects time lines. Then a comic book fan would be like, no he isn't though. But then Marvel comes out with a new book where 2099 becomes that in order to appeal to the movie people in a storyline that makes no sense to anyone who only watches the movies.

So glad you covred this story. I always thought I was missing something when I read the story years ago. I always though "hey where is the armor in this armor war? Seems like it's just generic villains and not really dealing with armor technology. Dragon stuff seems cool though." Now I did watch that animated series of Iron Man, and I remember there being 3 Fin Fan Fooms. Two were mecha units, one being gold the other silver, and then the real FFF. THAT would be a sweet Armor Wars. Iron Man vs. Mecha Dragons.

Definitely want to watch and support more IM stories on the couch, because I've been re-reading the era of Warren Ellis '"Extremis," "Director of SHIELD," and Matt Fraction's run lately, and I'd love to see any of that period covered on the show. See Sal I’m of the opinion that they had damn well better change some stuff, because I’m not putting money down for a 1 to 1 recreation of the original. I also believe that people change stuff because they have unique takes on established characters. Ultimately, the only thing that I think MUST remain the same is the spirit of the original. The tone and feeling and themes. Which I guess makes Starship Troopers a bad adaptation.

During like 45:00 I was like “OOOOH they’re gonna have the baddies pilot tony as iron man once they find out who he is and USE HIM to commit crimes AND THEN tony is gonna have to fight himself with the drone while trying not to kill himself and eventually free himself! For those curious about the actual ending of Dragon Seed Saga other than "it ends disappointedly", Iron Man, in a last grasp of desperation, grabs Mandarin's hands and repulses them, causing a blinding blast that shakes the entire earth and destroys the rings, which subsequently defeats the dragons. Iron Man's armor has the color burned off, resulting in a cool chrome design, and Mandarin is revealed to be alive, but missing both hands. It was a pretty awesome ending to me.
