It makes sense Rosalie is so casual about the prospect of a mob war. The worst has already happened to her. She has nothing left to dread. She has nothing left to lose.
Precisely. She can go on living without a care in the world. Even if Tony dies, she knows Carmella will still be there. The worst has already happened to her. She lives the rest of her life as if she were oblivious to the world.
Deleted scene analysis from 2 years ago on r/thesopranos: "The first time I watched this scene, I mostly got the surface level stuff - the dynamic between Tony and Carm. Tony explains to Carm that the family will have to 'lam it for a while, since NY is systematically eliminating high-ranking members of the NJ crew. She can't run away from this, or deny it, or push it to the back of her mind. The risks of her husband's occupation are now in full force. She knows people will die. I started thinking, why is Rosalie even in this scene? What's the point of her being here when Tony and Carmela are having this convo? Then I noticed how the camera cut back to Rosalie during T + C's conversation, and what she's doing when the camera cuts to her. As Tony is giving Carmela the details of the situation, Ro' is sitting down, smiling, and going through old photographs. Not a care in the world. I think the reason Rosalie is here during this conversation is to contrast Carmela's current predicament with Rosalie's situation. Carmela is scared. She has to leave her home and go into hiding. But Rosalie is all smiles, reminiscing. She doesn't have a mobster husband anymore, or a wannabe-gangster son, or a mobster boyfriend. They're all gone. There's no risk to her anymore. She's already lost everything, so she doesn't have to worry about going into hiding, or concealing stolen cash, or the eventual phone call that her husband was arrested/killed. She has already suffered through the scenario that all mob wives fear the most. The only way for Carmela (or someone in Carmela's position) to achieve happiness and eliminate the fears from happening...is for them to actually happen. It's only once you've lost everything that you have nothing more to lose, that your anxieties are eliminated and you can enjoy the small pleasures that you are left with. That's what Rosalie represents in this scene."
Like her daughter who was the only child of any mobster to independently realize and ask her father directly about it? Maybe you'd be better off in the comments under a Grey's Anatomy video or something, Justin
To those who think Carmela was the innocent wife, listen to what Tony said. "They don't touch the families, you know that." She was the best of them, and although she didn't know about the gory details, she was no innocent lamb. Heck, even the kids knew.
So? Am i suppose to atone for what my dad or spouse did? Fuck no. Knowing your family is involved in something doesnt make you guilty. The dumbest shit ive heard all day
I love Rosalie in this scene. "Is there anything I can do...or maybe I should just leave?" You can take the wife out of the mob but you can't take the mob out of the wife.
and she left the series, too. TBH I always waited for her arc, either something good or something bad should've happened to her. She still felt significant, after her travel with Carmella in France, romance with the young guy, her refusal to talk about her losses... Instead she just....left the series.
🤣Tony dragging him out of bed was funny enough. At first, I thought it was a bit harsh however Tony needed AJ to “man up” & help Carmella. It was no time for a pity party. “Owww!!! My tailbone!” 😂
We lost James Gandolfini way to soon. Truly a gifted actor. His range was incredible. A lot of the time it was like he wasn't acting at all. It's like he was living it for real. The degree to which he could transition emotions from moment to moment in a single take is something you can't teach. You kind of just have to be born with a feel for it.
Also the way he transformed through the seasons... In season 1 he was a loveable goof. In season 6 he was a selfish prick who only cared about himself and sacrificed anyone else. Even his appearance showed that, the look, the demeanor. There was no warmth left in his eyes even. Brilliant
I noticed the picture of Rosalie and Carmela with the cut outs of them in royal garb-nice touch by the producer showing their wealth and 'royalty' status is really nothing but an illusion that can end in a flash-just like the picture captures. The forced smiles and the whole acting bit of them trying to be 'normal' wealthy wives when they really know the filth and dirt that enables all of it.
The way tony smiles in anger talking about beating the shit out of aj until he can't move anymore and putting him on a piece of plywood and taking him out of the house
To me, the most confusing character in the show is Carmella. I can never figure where she stands, her husband is a psychotic murderer yet the biggest issue she has with him is that he constantly cheats on her.
He's a killer but she wants him to be HER killer, not some other skank's. I imagine that this is pretty common thinking among the wives of crime figures or political tyrants.
Their fight in the pool house at the end of season 4 is the first time I've been taken aback-- floored, even--by the acting on a television show. Both are impressive in these particular roles.
Paulie and Patsy are the ones who had him whacked. At least Paulie did. Look it up. There's crazy evidence. Especially since Tony finds out no one gives a fuck in slow mo. New York was willing to put Paulie in charge to take out Tony.
A gifted director. Tony gives the grim news to Carmela. The scene pans to Mrs. Aprile looking at a goofy vacation photo. Reinforces the state of bliss from which Carmela just emerged. This show is quality on 50 levels.
Great point. Rosalie doesn’t have to worry about such things anymore - Being a mob wife comes with perks, like lavish vacations. It also comes with the real possibility that at any moment you have to drop everything a run to a safe house. Carmela has her world swing from carefree to crashing down in an instant. For Rosalie, the worst has already happened, and she is free to continue happily reminiscing about her vacation.
Many films and shows are strategically structured that way because it builds on the viewer's emotion while driving it at the same time. In other words, if you felt grounded watching the Sopranos from beginning to end then that's why. Atmosphere is used to communicate with the viewer without talking down to them.
@@imcallingjapan2178 take English lessons. Then watch what he said, he said "could be several things " but you heard different. Japanese don't understand English but why watch something you don't understand? Watch Japanese TV drama instead.
“Families don’t get touched, you know that” *Flashes back to when Junior and Tony happily reminisced on the couch about DiMaggio beating the wife of Lenny to death with a baseball bat Bc her husband sold drugs*
Jared Ellis how many funerals did carmela go too. She was always worried the whole series. Now that its happening she's acts like she doesnt know who tony is hes a mob boss.
but that's exactly why she's so worried. because she knows precisely who he is and what could happen. she's been watching her potential future in the deaths of everyone around her for years. she should be afraid
But that's how these mafia broads are like. They know what their men do for living, how "they kill each other" as they put but at the same time they think that life will not knock on their doors at some point. Look at those broads who sued Sammy the bull Gravano for killing their fathers who were in the mafia as well. They live under denial hole.
This episode and the last episode managed to show how terrible a war in the mob really is. People get killed in minutes and began to disappear. Not only that but the FBI wasn't that far from Tony's head neither. The ending of this episode it truly scary than any horror movie could ever hope for. Tony sits in the dark with his gun in hand waiting to walk through and kill him.
0:49 is so chilling to me. By the end of the scene we know she is able to hear the full conversation so this cut to her smiling is just showing she’s so numb to news like this after all she’s been through.. makes you wonder how much shit went down when Jackie was acting boss
Rosalie was a good person and a good friend. She never for one second enjoyed the fact or rubbed it in. Carmella was her dear friend even if she had to put her in her place during their vacation. She overcame the death of her husband and the horrible death or her 22 year old son. She came back strong and happy and endured it all and now was genuinely sorry for Carmella and Tony and wanted to be there for them. She kept it brief and honest. Rosalie was a real one.
@@bob494949 a mobster? Accessory to murder?! Noooooo! Ya don't say!!! I thought this was a show about loan sharks and strippers! 🙄 fortunately, the writers clearly knew how to make the characters multi-dimensional.
not after he capped that kid, he was a killer like the rest. Janice was the only one with guts to end Violence against women when she did the job Tony should have done before. Then how romantic where did you bury him, Tony said on a hill with lots of grass....
The Sopranos is SO layered. Am I overanalyzing the photos of Carmela as a French Revolution era queen/monarch in that scene? Symbolism for a life of decadence as mob wife folding up in the finale?
I'd say she was appropriately shocked/upset at the news. What's she supposed to do, roll around on the floor in a heap of tears? Not like it was her brother or something. For all we know she might have thought he was a sucker for marrying Janice and figures he's better off.
@@allgoldproductions Not to mention that it's not like she has time to mourn Bobby right at that moment, even if she wanted to. She knows Tony's got a target on his back and that's priority number one.
Carmella wasn’t all that close with Bobby, or even Janice for that matter. She pretty much just tolerated them because Janice was Tony’s sister, but never went out of her way to visit them or get too close.
@Jabs Jabs Yeah, Melfi is a lot more of a femme fatale, cold, professional and tempting. Carmela on many occasions was the heart of the show. Edie Falco was superb casting.
This is actually a classic form of communication during an emergency. One person (either male or female) focuses...and the other person becomes 'The Riddler' - question after question without taking action. One person focuses, one person folds.
This happened at Christmas once when my mom passed out and did a header off the floor. My sister was medical power of attorney and she was there with us. My dad and I sprung into action and stabilized her neck. I checked and made sure she was alert and oriented X 4 (not an EMT but have some knowledge). I spent 10p to 4a driving to and from hospitals on Christmas. Meanwhile, my sister had a panic attack and shuttered herself in her room; and made her husband carpool with me to and from the different hospitals. My mom removed her as medical power of attorney the next month...
@@rogergarrison4271 Well enjoy getting blasted as soon as the house is in view, theres total visibility of the driver/passenger through the front windshield. Where as you cant see jack sht through the back from the outside.
The war was supposed to be over. Remember he had that sitdown with New York in that warehouse with Butchie. He gave him the okay to kill Phil and after that they were supposed to have moved on.
"Families don't get touched, you know that!" Carmella's shocked expression says what we the audience are thinking: "Bobby IS family!" Tony loved him like a brother-in-law.
I never watched the sopranos. They have every season at the library. I got to stop watching these little snippets and get all the seasons and have a sopranos fest
Bobby Bacala’s kids lost both parents. Very tough. Gandolfini owned this role. It seems like he was ‘behaving’ when playing Tony Soprano and he was acting when being interviewed as James Gandolfini.
Frank Grimes agreed. Considering that in the span of about ten seconds she learns her brother-in-law is dead, her best friend’s husband is gravely injured, mob enemies are coming for her husband, and she has to leave her house immediately, she handles it pretty damn well. She even considers Janice while all of this is going on.
Thanks, you're probably the first to upload this scene. I wonder what would the situation have been like if Christopher and Ralphie were still around and in Tony's corner. He burned so many bridges and just got careless towards the end. Jersey crew should have gone defcon 2 when Harris warned Tony at the pork store.
I just noticed the dynamic between Tony and Carmella, how Tony's not really understanding Carm. Their communication is askew. It starts when she figures out that Tony is the target. "You mean they're after you!" she says, and he says "you and the kids go, I'll be somewhere else". She was afraid for Tony, but Tony treats her as though she's afraid for herself. He assures her that she won't be in the line of fire. She panics and says "Oh my God!" and he says "Families don't get touched. You know that!" and she gives him a look. She's realizing that he doesn't understand why she's upset. She asks about the details. "Where am I gonna go? Where are you gonna go?!". He tells her where she's going but not where he's going. This annoys her, because her real concern is for his safety. He figures that she is annoyed by the inconvenience, and becomes angry, and suggests she go to a hotel if she doesn't want to go to the other house. This shows the fundamental flaw in their relationship. There is evidence to suggest that Carmella believes in, and feels, genuine, romantic love for Tony (and other characters), but Tony, doesn't understand it or believe in it. He characterizes Carmella's attachment to him as something else. Something that's purely self-serving. She's there for the big house, the clothes, and the life of leisure and luxury, he tells himself. He attributes all of her motivations to material ends. He demonizes her to justify the way he treats her, and she lives in denial because leaving him with just the kids is too hard.
Truth in your analysis. But, Carmella did like the lifestyle provided through Tony's blood money. A psychiatrist told her the same early in the show. Just before Tony arrived, she and Rose were reminiscing over their trip to Paris. She was proud of Meadow attending prep schools and going to Columbia. But, that doesn't mean she didn't have some love for Tony other than materialism, but materialism was a big factor in her staying in the marriage.
I love how tony says “ families don’t get touched you know that “. And after she looks at his face she says “ ok” knowing how serious the situation is.
Actually I wouldn't trust Phil to respect the rule about going after families. If Phil had the opportunity to hurt one of Tony's kids, I don't think he'd lose much sleep over it. He'd find a way to justify it in his mind. I remember when Phil threatened Christopher's mother.
RIP Jimmy as they all called him. I read an article years back he shared that he lioved Edie Falco & i swear @ that time that ppl who were actors, as much as thespians get ragged on sumtimes lol, i knew for certain that folks like that are so special, really! Lol
But imo i think Rosalie would still be there for Carmela and i never wanted to come right out and say it so blatantly bc I do become ❤ broken...Tony almost sounds naive (?idk lol ) when looking desperately at Carmela saying " they don't come after families" . And Carmela, to me right after he says that, her reaction is like, she's not si sure. When Adriana's mother pops off to Carm @ the outdoor evening festival, i totally believe that Carmela's reaction is naive. lol rhymes a little. Anyway i love The Sopranos thx 4 listening to my take on all this 😆
@@brainrot4919 Ad Mother was still Sore irregardless she Blamed Ton & Chris(Anyone Remotely Close to them), cause before that Ad came to live with her than Makes up with Chris than afterwords nothing Ad Mother wasn't stupid she a mother knows their child & could come to her own Conclusion as to what Happened.
Edie Falco's reactions in this scene are so phenomenally well calibrated. When she first finds out/realises the main details of the situation (Bobby's death, that they are after Tony) there is such horror in her eyes, she seems on the brink of an outburst. Then, she quickly gets herself under control, the horror is still there, but you realise that she had been preparing for this moment psychologically for years. She understands the situation and her terror is controlled only by the need to act.
LOL, that would be my ol' lady... Me: "Just go, quick, so you're not a target out in the open" 😵 Her: "It will be a 4-star hotel, right? Wait - I have to water the plants, and sweep the front walk... oh, and stop the milk delivery..." 😠 Me: "Just shut up and go pack up the shinebox!" 😁
Carmella started off the series telling Tony he was going to Hell. By the time the series came to a close she really loved him. She accepted him. What he did. Who he was. In a lot of ways she was the most loyal to him.
I love how Carmela acts surprised when Tony's mafia life affects his family like she doesn't know that people get clipped every day and wars can break out at any moment. Its like Karen from goodfellas. She loves the life yet does the whole babe in woods routine act everytime.
You guys are forgetting that she just went through hell with Tony after he was shot. I don’t think she thought tony being hunted was shocking, it’s just one thing after another, the walls are closing in. Carmella isn’t innocent of course, but she got her act together, and I bet you’d be under a lot of stress knowing you have to drop everything and go off the grid. She was just told her brother in law was dead, one of her best friends husband is in the hospital on his death bed, they’re after her husband, and she has to abandon ship. Quite honestly she’s being relatively calm.
this ep gives more goosebumps than the last one. Bobby's death, Silvio's shooting, Tony's family runaway.. I remember when I watched the first time.. wow
My wife a few times is like Carm here. I try to tell her something important and I get a million questions. I'm like "STOP!!! Please just listen!!" LOL
Try to be patient with each other :) My husband has a knack for running away with the conversation. I don't hold on to my train of thought very well. So when he comes back with "I'm sorry, what were you going to say?" I really have no idea. And then I'm frustrated. So we've worked it out that I finish my thought first, then it's his turn because he can remember what he was going to say lol we're been together almost 10 years now
Say what you want about Tony Soprano but he genuinely cared about his family. The guy was a selfish sociopath and a criminal but he legitimately loved his family. By this time, I really believe Tony felt a lot of guilt for what he had put them through.
When Bobby got hit I can remember screaming at the TV I knew it was war time... Bobby was the safest guy never did anything...Tony should have listened to his uncle.
I like how Tony reacts to rosalies offer for help. He does not speak to these people about his dealings but they know what he does and who he is. This is kind of the first time a real innocent person has gotten a reaction like that from Tony. He knows that Rosalie is aware that people are out to kill him and even then simple "no" shows that he isn't afraid of talking about it to them but chooses not to about his life in the mob
The shot of Carmela and Rosalie in the cut-out photo op spot, with the gray hair--eerie look into their futures as two old widows only having each other
@@thomasjust2663 Tony forced him to do it. Cause Bobby beat him up defending Janice. Up until then he had never murdered anyone and probably wouldn't have.
