Took a lot of TRAINING for this one... Ranking Every NSW Opal-Network Train

After more than a year since my first NSW train review, presenting the full suite of reviews and a LOT of editing, my NSW train rankings are ready. This is quite a long one , so grab a drink and some snacks, sit down and enjoy a look at all trains you can jump onboard with the tap of an Opal card.
As with last time, there is an objective criteria list to inform the results, but there's also an enthusiast tier list, as unfortunately, 40 year old trains without basic features can't win an objective criteria video...

Nice video and fair ranking. It is about time that we saw somewhat fair rankings of NSW trains rather than biased opinions.

Glad you enjoyed! I've always tried to present from a 'customer experience' perspective - not just get teary-eyed about nostalgia.

You should create an updated version of this once the D sets enter service, OSCARS are returned to suburban running and T sets have their tech upgraded!

Let's cross that bridge when we come to it!

Great video loved the comments and comparisons to the London Underground! I found the Metro interesting and look forward to catching it when next in Sydney.

I think you should have had a ranking for how much do the carriages smell like someone has pissed all over the floors and walls

Nice video TalkingPlanning! I’ve recently finished my Custom Denning review and I’m not sooo proud of it but I also like the m sets you found

Nice! I do enjoy an M set ride, and was glad it made it quite high up the list.

I understand how you rank these things based on actual reliability and features, instead of "nostalgia and personal favourites". If that was the case, then for the Queensland Rail ranking, the ICE and EMU would definitely come first, then the IMU100/120, SMU200/220. The 260/160 would be second last and NGR last, obviously. I also hope you get to 1K subscribers soon.
@TalkingPlanning
@TalkingPlanning 2 года назад
I'm sure it would play out that way, even if I find it frustrating that the NGR would end up last by that metric. One thing that makes the Queensland versus NSW rankings quite different is the urban and intercity types are very distinct.
@aviationchannel6204
@aviationchannel6204 2 года назад
@@TalkingPlanning That's true. There's very little difference between suburban and interurban trains in Queensland, you'll often see IMUs on the Doomben service and SMUs going up to Nambour and sometimes even Gympie.

What an interesting video! I’m sure I’m one of the only ones who understood all of this haha.

Cheers! And hopefully you appreciate the nuances that go into the rankings too.

Interesting how the NSW rankings correspond much more closely with the order in which they were introduced than the QR rankings were.
@TalkingPlanning
@TalkingPlanning 2 года назад
It is interesting! The technology and features across generations of Queensland Rail trains correspond less to their age, as there have been more technology and features upgrades over the years (e.g. all QR trains except the ICE have internal information displays, whereas only the Milennium and newer trains have info screens in NSW). The general condition and cleanliness also contributes to higher overall scores for NSW too.

Waratahs should get a 2 for comfort- the metro isn't much better either...but maybe I'm just hating on newer trains...I wholeheartedly agree with the features.

Personally, I feel Tangara should get a couple bonus points (1 or 2) as it did almost revolutionise the Melbourne network too! Unfortunately, the Melbourne network was used to boarding quick, and the 2 door, double deck layout didn't fit Melbourne's more "Metro" like trains
@TalkingPlanning
@TalkingPlanning Год назад
Its a tough one, NSW missed the chance to revolutionise Melbourne in 1851. I don't do an 'enthusiast' score, because I feel there are plenty of people better placed to do that. There aren't a lot of people 'enthusiastic about good public transport' who also understand some of the complexities of planning, design and delivery, which is where I like to focus my effort, along with some actual urban planning (which I agree, has fallen off the radar). Quick boarding and alighting is important, and is a weak point for double deck rolling stock.

I've found that even in recent years, M set runs have been the runs that haven't delivered what was advertised, if you now what I mean...

If you want a clear ranking you need at ask someone who actually worked on them. Overall it’s v set, s set, k set, tangara, Oscar, endeavour, xpt, Waratah series 1, and Waratah series 2 then the new nif. Do not ever include the metro in any ranking system as Robbie the robot is never counted as it’s a different company

Something you forgot about the Endeavours was the footrests under the seats
@TalkingPlanning
@TalkingPlanning 2 года назад
So do the OSCARs, Hunter railcars and V sets I believe. I'm too tall to actually use them...without my knees digging into the seat in front
@kingsbishop1479

How can you have the tangara’s as your favourite i cant stand the tangara’s the windows are so thick, reflective and dirty that you can barely see anything through them not to mention the lack of reversible seating and the windows are so high up and the lack of modern technology as well ik they are having an upgrade to add modern stuff but the windows will stay the same and the non reversible seating too and also they just look ugly the only reason why I don’t want them to scrap them is because there fun to laugh at if the train is a tangara I just wait for the next train after that but ofc I have no choice on the T4 but it’s not my line so I’m ok with it
@aldcstarss12
@aldcstarss12 4 месяца назад
Also; as a person who uses the T4 all the time, in my experience, the Tangaras are never cleaned well enough. If you bang on the seats, dust comes out everywhere, people leave food on the train and it never gets cleaned up (one time I found a mouldy sandwich) and it’s just disgusting. Period.

Which city are you planning to review the trains next? You should try Melbourne trains as they are refurbished freshly, my favourite Sydney train would be the Waratah A and B sets, what is your most favourite train in Sydney

how would you have ranked the Monorail if it was still around today?
@TalkingPlanning
@TalkingPlanning 2 года назад
Tough question, the monorail was certainly interesting, so would be high on the enthusiast tier list, but on the objective rankings...it would really struggle.
@sancheeez
@sancheeez 2 года назад
@@TalkingPlanning 30km/h, capacity of a regular bus, narrow chassis and short, unconnected modules, no on-board passenger displays (that I remember) and reliability was a major weak point. The elevated stations would have docked points for access, too.
@TalkingPlanning
@TalkingPlanning 2 года назад
Add to that a reliance on private property agreements and awkward maintenance and you can see why they only tend to be viable in theme parks
