he's moving that way in order to sing the way he does. it's not some interpretive dance to look cool or trippy, that's just kinda his natural reaction. in his words, "i can't walk and chew gum at the same time"
Esperanza Fleet People are so used to making assumptions that they believe them as fact without any evidence giving them reason to believe it as such. Referring to Kit, by the way.
Um... I'm quoting Maynard in an interview from around this period of Tool's career. Everyone else is in fact making assumptions based on their preconceptions of Tool as a "drug" band.
Maynard definitely isn't the prettiest guy out there, and he's walking around like he's near hypothermic, hunched over like he's just shit himself, and acting like he's fresh out of the asylum, but he can sing his ass off.
Christopher Nichols I love Maynard, and Tool, and APC, And puscifer, Maynard is a fucking legend, my original comment was just a joke on his on stage act which most people can't comprehend.
I met Maynard and trust me, he is the complete opposite in person. He's quite shy. A highly intelligent man. We spoke of my Greek culture. He even kissed my hand so there ya go! He's alright in my book...One cool cat...
Dude, I saw them in San Diego, pretty sure it was between 1994-1996 but not sure on the exact date but Aenima had just come out. At the start of the set, Maynard was brought out on stage by a roadie. He was inside a black duffle bag. The band started to play and he unzipped himself from inside the duffle bag and emerged dressed like a preacher and was holding a bible. I believe they opened with 46 and 2.
That is one hell of a performance........The entire group did not hold back on the passion of the song.....And the sound engineer deserves a mention too.
Michael Foster what if i get goosebumps from the studio version, and i appreciate the performance, but i don't get goosebumps from it? It's very interesting and fascinating to look at, but it's just not what i get goosebumps from. Am i lame in your book and you are still superior to me?
I completely agree! At first, I was thinking what the hell is happening here? After watching again and seeing that there was something going on in his eyes that I couldn't explain, I realized how hard it must be to replicate these emotions on a nightly basis.
He is so emotionally connected to the lyrics, the feeling, to allowing those brilliant waves of bass guitar and percussion completely wash over him. The guitar squeals perfectly. It is chilling, absolute 100% dedication to the moment, every moment nothing but the moment. Being in The moment the way people say to do it, but Maynard shows us how to do it. This video rattles my cage every time and it rips an entirely different, but equally intense, often brand new unknown emotion from me without fail. I only watch it alone and try to clear my mind like it's the first time. Even if I'm wrong and he is thinking about hid shopping list for dinner or if that's his favorite onesie, it doesn't matter, because that emotion ride is what really good music does when you let yourself take it. I hate to overlook the entire bands brilliance and dedication to that performance too! Cuz they are all involved.
He never did Sober anymore like he did it here. I have heard thousands of performances of it, this is absolutely his vocal peak of this song. I can feel his pain
This is when the world first realized the true genius of Tool. I recall getting absolute chills when I first saw this. My god, such power, such emotion, such talent. I became I fan immediately. I still am...and I still get the same damn chills watching this very same video to this day...
I saw MJK live for the first time in 2003, I was 18 years old. That was with A perfect circle in Strasbourg @ Laiterie. I did not care too much about APC's music, I was totally mesmerized by Tool....MJK's vocal performance on the APC tracks were identical to the studio recording. He never left the darkness of the back of the stage, on which he stood on a sort of podium with weird glowing runes, he never went into the light, only his voice mattered. I left the gig litterally feeling like I just had a beer with jesus christ. Coolest feeling ever, very unique to be THAT impressed by someone's stage aura. Never happened again (I had an actual beer with Lenny kravitz, cool dude, but nothing ethereal like MJK). I regularly come back to listening to Tool, never gets old, always impresses me, always makes me reflect about hidden meaning in their songs. From Switzerland with Love!
1:55 it’s that 1000 yard stare…. No one can do it like Maynard can. I have seen this video at least 100 plus times over the years. I have also seen him perform this exact same song about a year before this to a club with about 50 or 60 people in it. I wasn’t there, God I wish, but you can actually find that video as well , on RU-vid. Even though there’s probably 50,000 people in this crowd the stare he goes into is the exact same as he did a year earlier to the room of only 50 people. It’s incredible…It’s almost like you’re the only one in the room with him no matter how many people are there.
0:37 - 0:40 The emotions I feel from Maynard looking utterly possessed and lost in the delirium and desperation of the character he’s portraying, makes this one of my favorite moments ever on a stage performance. He murdered it.
reaganlab i realized that after he replied dummy.. i didnt know it was dumb to misunderstand how he said it. am i dumb if i confuse homonyms too?? or did you just need to attempt to put someone else down on the internet so you can feel slightly better about yourself for 5 minutes??
Lol this always cracks me up. My dad was telling me he went to a show one time where Maynard was painted half white and blue while squatting in the corner the whole time 😂
Wow really in a Santa suit JURKING off thought this was him getting freaky no wonder he sits in the background know and bands up front to bad I'd like to see him perform well not as Santa JURKING Claus but acting out like a manard be fun tool rocks
Tool is an incredible band they are so unique and talented people think they’re a bunch of weirdos but these dudes are some incredible musicians they know how to do music special band
Most AMAZING FUCKING VOICE EVER ... hypnotic stage presence, like a caged animal about to break through some veil only he sees ... saw these guys, I don't remember when, in the 90's, they were stunning ...
Maynard is such a unique talent, but let’s not forget Danny, Adam and Justin/Paul. The entire band is a one of a kind, the live performances almost outshine the recordings. 🤘🏼🤟🏼
I remember opening for this 'new' band in the summer of '91; in a club in Western MD...they were awesome then; they still are. I recall the show in '97 when Maynard came out in a speedo; half his body black/half white...it was epic
One of my favorite videos of ALL time, always loved the song, but this performance of it blows my mind!! Thank you to ciffi for posting!! MUCH appreciated!
I saw them in '06 when they headlined Street Scene. Just incredible. I was really young at the time but I was blown away by how tight they were. Perfection in creativity.
See him staring at the crowd? Saw them at Lollapalooza and I though he was staring straight at me! They took over that show...as it should be. TOOL forever.
Great friend brought me to them during this albums debut and I have been a strong fan since. Thanks Dave G. Seen them Live 3 times with the last time being at the Gorge with my son. We rode our motorcycles from Tacoma and back. Wonderful band, wonderful music, wonderful trip and wonderful memories. Thanks Dan.
if you performed a song for the 15,000th time that you wrote decades ago, you'd have to stand in the dark and concentrate to try and remember how it felt in the beginning too.
Sure when Maynard wears on open half-onesie he get cheered on, payed and made famous. When I do it I get a talk about what's appropriate in school and how I'm not allowed in the boys bathroom.
I was a Tool fan for 20 years and only in the last 5 years did I even know what MJK looked like. I'm so grateful for that bc it was only about the music for me and not the image. Mystery is powerful.
Sebastian Hanks Agreed. However, his insight to the world and the chaos within it points to what I see as a strong "Spiritual" connection. I wouldnt underestimate his knowledge of his place in things.
