Tool Talk: Stanley SW No. 92| The SW that broke my heart 

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with this tool. I've had to make a lot of mortise and tenon joints lately and been seriously looking at a shoulder plane. Your video has saved me a lot of time, money and frustration. Back to E-Bay, a couple auctions are ending soon. And it's great to see young men taking up the craft. Thanks again.

The wood river shoulder plane is excellent

My #92 came in and with a little adjustment scorekeeper beautiful. Maybe I just got lucky.

8:15 I own an older Stanley No. 90 which is basically the same shoulder plane, but shorter. If you remove that sliding cap, turn it upside down, you should see a screw that adjusts so you can make the throat a specific depth when you slide it closed. The screw acts as a "stop" for the slide. Check your 92 for that. It's meant to allow the user to have a specific adjustment that can be duplicated when you have to sharpen so you don't need to mess around with all the adjustments.

The first tool looks like it was manufactured and then thrown on top of a bunch of others in a crate. The 2nd one was really beat up! Again, it looks like it has been beat around during the manufacturing process. I wonder if you could take the best parts off them and make one really good plane? Nice honest review, Matthew!

I was debating on making a similar video. I bought the sweetheart no. 4 and no. 62. The no. 62 the cap iron screw bottoms out and the blade isn’t even remotely secure. Stanley sent me another one after spending excessive time in trying to get the first one to function properly. The second one they sent, brand new out of the box is the same way. If you spend the time to set up them up and shim the cap iron in order to hold the blade firmly in place, they work great. Just regret not spending a little more on a wood river version. I pretty much use my .no 6 wood river as a jack plane or some older baileys instead of fighting 3 brand new sweet hearts. The no. 4 is a pain in the ass to get it set

I think the blades are made in the UK. QA is likely better on those. It’s especially disappointing as the fundamentals are there, it’s just the finally grinding and finishing.

The new one that Stanley sent looks to be all beat to death, serious dings and poor finish.

I got the Benchdog from Rockler, it works good..To open mouth a shim is in stalled which works good, between the two openings it covers every thing I need, but not as conveniently as some other brands. While at Rockler I was able to compare with the 92, glad I made the with the choice.

Up here in Canada a Veritas medium shoulder plane can be gotten for about $160cdn. There is a Lee Valley Tools in the US so I wonder that it sells for more in the US than it does up here. That said the quality of the build is past excellent. The gap between to two main parts is invisible to the naked eye and EVERY piece is machined as good as it possibly can be and it is a joy to work with. My thought is that when you buy tools letting the price guide your purchase will eventually cost more in the long run. As well if you buy good tools if you are no longer using it there will be a lineup to buy it from you. So I consider good quality tools cheap rent. And they are a joy to use. I have struggled with Stanley products for years and no longer choose to. I have a Bailey No 5, a Stanley 45 made a long time ago and the rest of my planes are Veritas. Made in Canada eh? I sold Stanley tools for about 30yrs and it came to a point they made them as cheap as they could to get more money out of us.

I bought one and immediately returned it and bought the Veritas. The Stanley was junk and the Veritas is an absolute pleasure and ultimate perfection. 15:17

I'm glad that you posted this. I haven't bit the bullet to buy a shoulder plane yet but when I do I'll be sure to stay away from this tool. Like I always say, "You've done been Chinafied!"

What were y ou expecting for sixty dollars? I got one of the old stile 92 and also a 93 and they also had issues, and required work to maken usable, if hpu want a perfect tool, ge a clifton or a lie nielsen, then you will be happy,

Thats the beauty of stanley tools they always needed work. But when you do that it kind of becomes your tool doesn't it.

Wow that definitely don't look new. I wouldn't be happy with it if I bought it .

Had the same thing happen to me, stopped trying to use it.

Are you admiring these planes or using them? I hope you realize how many of these things are produced daily and for 60$ I think YOU Could do a little more work on your tool to cover the price break. Just my 2cent wisdom

Look for the old USA or Mexico, China was the ZINGER! It looks like China needs more cosmoline! I have never had to use one but $60 vs $200 if I didn't use it much I think I could wing it with this one. But, if it is a specialty tool just save up and and get the better one if it makes life easier.

I had a ton of casting flash and grittiness in the screws on mine. It does ok but I wouldnt buy one again.

Do they make this plane in Mexico? I hope Stanley sees this video, you would of thought whoever sent the replacement would of taken the time to check it was a mint condition example.

Pity but stanley tools the quailty is not the same as it used to be about 20 yrs ago the prices are still high but same with marples split proof chisels the steel in them is not like it used to be .

It's $96 dollars now.

You get what you pay for. This has always been the case. $60 might have got you a sweet plane at some point, but you'll need to fork over the $$ for a LN or LV to get a quality tool that will last a lifetime. Only way around this is to find an old Stanley made in the US, best scenario unused. Stanley is no longer Stanley. Shame, but that's how it be. Shop Fox, Wood River (as pretty as they are), and the others are just plain shit.

I mostly wont buy from Stanley. You can get far better, decent priced things from Woodriver/Quangsheng/Luban. Often also Chinese made but quality control and tolerances are obviously much better

The Stanley Sweetheart Low Angle Jackplane Sucks too! Stanley is GARBAGE (the newer one’s anyway). Buy once, cry once. Tools don’t cost money-they either save you money or make you money.
