I like you sir because you seem genuinely intrigued with Tool's music whereas other reactors do it because it's trending.

I honestly just don’t know of another drummer that hits so hard but also so clean at the same time perfectly for the song everytime. There’s a ton of great drummers but this guy just dominates the kit in so many different ways 💯

From what I've read danny carey hits his Tom's over 1200 times during this piece. Maynard lost his voice for 2 weeks after recording this.

Interesting story behind the song... From what I read they had Lateralus pretty much done and submitted a demo to the record company. They said "Where's the real heavy stuff?" Can you do a heavier song?" Tool wrote this in response. They just needed the proper motivation 😁

The smile on your face when listening to Tool says it all. I really dont think there's any band out there where all four members are equally important in the music.

Give Parabol/Parabola a try for more melody. Do them both together, or you will have the Toolheads after you. c= Vicarious is another one that is really interesting, but definitely more on the rhythmic side of their prowess.

Tool uses the key of D minor on almost all of their songs. This also allows Danny to tune all of his drums to the first/thrid/fifth note, i think he even tuned cymbals by cutting at them. Helps his drums to really fit into the mix

For a guy who likes melody in his tracks you sure are picking the hardest songs of theirs, try Parabol/Parabola or Wings for Marie/10000 Days next those compositions have the whole package. 👊🤘....oops just caught the end thoughts good call on Wings/10000 Days

I think you'd really enjoy all the movements that Third Eye brings to the table. It's quite a journey, and my personal favorite Tool song.

Yes the middle part labors a bit, but I think in the context of the whole album, it’s a more welcoming breathing spot and the length makes a bit more sense.

Parabol/Parabola, Push It, Jambi, 46 & 2, Eon Blue Apocalypse/The Patient, these are songs off the top of my head that are more melodic of the Tool songs. I personally enjoy it all, so any Tool reaction for me isn't a disappointment.

This song was about execs pushing for more aggressive songs from the band, so Maynard wrote one they could shove down their throats to choke on.

Yeah, as you mentioned recurring themes, it reminded me of the actor playing the part of a doctor in the intro to Rosetta Stoned. He has a speaking part in the first track, Vicarious, playing a news reporter, reiterating the first verse.

To me, there is nothing else out there like Tool, they are phenomenal! You should consider checking out a few from the album Aenima, a few like H, 46&2, or Third Eye (you may have to work up to Third Eye, it is epic but, it's like nothing you have ever hear and it could be a little jarring). Anyway, glad to see you're going to keep working through Tool they and amazing band, as you are discovering.

That lil break near the 5 minute mark is just to look left and right, surveil the damage and refocus the attack.

99% of Tool's songs are in Dm, you're definitely correct. If any flaws can be found in their musicianship as a musician it's their lack of modulation and interesting key changes, however, what they are able to do in a single key is something incredible.

Try the live version of Tool's Pushit from the Album Salival. If you want melodic stuff, that's your jam.

Vicarious, Right in two, Jambi, The Pot, Stinkfist, are also incredible. And yeah Tool construct their songs in a way where you would want to listen to an album alltogether instead of individual songs.

Great review again Jim! Especially love your reaction to the drumming. I feel like I learn something when I watch your reviews man :). I was thinking, since you've done a few songs off Lateralus already and seem to kind of have a feel for the album, why not just finish Lateralus out by doing individual reviews just like this one. Then from their, pick whether to move on to 10,000 Days or AEnima or whatever you want, and maybe do a full album live stream (I would recommend doing AEnima, but just my two cents:)). Just some thoughts to consider, cheers!

I feel you are more into the complex harmonics of music, and yes I am a tool fan of course. So I would suggest "Parabol/Parabola" or "reflection" or "right in two". Love your channel by the way, and I was intrigued by your other comments on other styles of music. Keep up the good work.

Rosetta Stoned isn't my favorite song, but you can't just listen to it without hearing Lost Keys in front of it.

There is some type subliminal messaging going on in the song. I hear something in the background during the slow part of the song.

I agree with what you said on sticking to the root note - most Tool songs are in they key of D, usually riff based and stick around D minor/pentatonic/blues riffs. There are however a couple of songs that, in terms of the guitar and melody work stray away from that to some extent - Right in two, Stinkfist, Eulogy, Pushit (live from Salival)..

Pretty sure this was about the record label telling them to get heavier so they could keep pace with the other bands who were getting bigger with them in the late 90’s

Danny Carrey is far and away the best musician in the band. He studied tabla playing from a master tabla player in India for a time. He's quite prolific. Honestly one of the best living drummers in the industry.
