Paul McCartney is the most extraordinary music artist ever. I was recently listening to what he was doing in the 1990's (Flaming pie, Standing Stone, Rushes et al...). This Beatles-era bass comp' is just icing on the cake. For those who don't know: check out the man's post-Beatles output. It's mind-boggling in its sheer diversity. The constant is creativity. Genius? I think so.

@TheMusicalElitist

What are "weird" basses?
@russellschwartz9687
@russellschwartz9687 2 года назад
Around the Rubber Soul/Revolver era they started realizing just how buried in the mix the bass was and ironically enough, it was John who demanded they find a way to make their albums match the American ones at the time which had a much clearer bass sound. I could be mistaken but I feel like Rubber Soul was the first album Paul used the Rickenbacker as his recording bass which definitely helped him get a more defined sound. He broke out the Hofner for the Get Back sessions but I think that was the last time he used that for recording. He would use the Rickenbacker for the rest of the Beatles’ recording career and when John or George would play bass on a song they’d either use the Fender six sting bass or a Precision.
@Wes8761
@Wes8761 2 года назад
@@TheMusicalElitist Fender Bass 6 (very cool 6 string bass), The Rickenbacker which isnt a super common bass but has an INCREDIBLE sound, id classify the Hofner as weird also considering it is so light, hollow, and has a unique sound/electronics. Very few bassists could have pulled of that line on bass back the, Paperback Writer is another masterful line. I'd like to hear that one someday. I saw Paul play with Wings. I sat 10 or 20 feet in front of him. It blew me away how good he played live. He has full command of the Arena. That man sang. He could have done that gig without a PA system. @russellschwartz9687
@russellschwartz9687 2 года назад
They’ve all said that bass playing kind of just fell on Paul because he was kind of the only one willing to do it really. George was the lead guitar player so there’s no way he was being “demoted” to bass and in addition to not really being that great at it, John HATED playing the bass. So the role basically went to Paul by default. It just so happened that because he’s Paul McCartney he of course ended up being one of the best ever.
@thesilvershining
@thesilvershining 2 года назад
Paul was forced into it because John and George didn’t want it and the band didn’t need three guitarists. But it was great for them because Paul has a natural gift for creating basslines that elevate the song. Having a great rhythm section in general is essential and Paul/Ringo are still one of the most creative rhythm sections there ever was, even if not powerhouse virtuosos. Plus McCartney basslines are just fun as hell to play.

Wait. What???!!!I watched this entire thing fully expecting the song “something” to be number one. How is it not even on the list???? It’s easily their best baseline of their entire catalog. It’s not even a contest. Was this just an oversight?

Thanks for the insight! I do love the bass line in Something but i just like some others better. Although it is for sure in my top 20.

It’s not „easily” the best bassline in their catalogue 🤣 It might be „arguably the best” one, or you „like it the most”, or „the general public that has no idea about music whatsoever and never pays attention to the bass track in songs likes it the most”, or whatever But it’s not „easily” the best. I’d rather argue in favor of „A Day In The Life” bassline, or the „Come Together” one Paul McCartney is not revered as one of the greatest bass players in history, because of writing one bassline that is „easily” his best

@@guciowitomski3825 For me it’s Dig a Pony (although it’s not hard) since it got me to start playing the bass.

Imagine writing Come Together and feeling - quite rightly - rather pleased with yourself, thinking, “You know what? That’s a proper little banger I’ve put together there.” Then you go to your band and the bassist just owns, nay pwns, the song. I mean, I know in reality Lennon rated McCartney’s bass playing, but, surely on some level, he must’ve been thinking, “For fuck’s sake, Paul. No fair.”
