Crash. The production value, the story that you added to what could've been a cookie cutter watchmojo list, the clearly large amount of time and effort put into making this video. You deserve to be famous.
ckrustin so does trap, but there are still great rappers and groups in the genre, even if only a few of them have full on consistently quality albums. Look at Travis Scott, thugger, posty, higher brothers, playboi carti, three 6 mafia, 100 gecs (barely trap but at least trap influenced at times), Rich Brian, JID, Megan Thee Stallion, Cupcakke
If this channel was a rock genre, it would probably be prog. Long-ass videos with intricate and thought out opinions and sometimes with a story to boot, yeah, seems about right!
@@dablindscooter1973 they reunited and a couple of years before they announced that they will work on new music but they couldn't agree so we will never have a new soad album (probably). But they still tour together and play their older songs.
peanut4745 I can't tell if I like them or not but they don't sound a lot like anything I heard. Also those weird animalistic scatting passages in a few songs have me confused in a slightly fearful way. Like, when the frontman just be like ]+|€{*|€|!|*{!{|+~*!}+{!\¥|+{!mmmmmm
I feel that Incubus encompasses the Nu Metal sounds way more than A Perfect Circle does. I personally think that Incubus especially with their earlier stuff up to Make Yourself can actually fit within the nu metal mold... At least if fits better than A Perfect Circle, especially with albums like Thirteenth Step I think that APC is a thing of their own just like how you mentioned for Incubus and if I were to make this list they would probably be in reverse positions.
Ngl, the more I think about it, I think this list is more for bands that were considered a part of the nu metal scene rather than them having the sound of nu metal. I especially think that since most of the characteristics named for nu metal are most definitely not exclusive to nu metal at all (most post-grunge or even regular grunge had sad/dark lyrics).
One reason I adore the very idea of this list is because I've always been a big proponent of the things nu-metal did RIGHT. The best nu-metal inspired real emotion, both from the musicians and from the listener. Hurt's "Rapture" is one of the few songs to ever truly make me cry, and I'm not ashamed to admit that. Korn's first album is basically an exercise in raw emotion. The end of "Daddy" is one of the most soul-crushing things I have ever listened to, because there's nothing fake about it (despite what some may believe). When nu-metal hit, it hit very hard. I do have an issue with some of the bands listed, though, particularly Deftones, and you even pointed out why in the video. Deftones are basically like Mad Max. They were pulled into a situation that they didn't care for either way and plowed through it. They are about as nu-metal as Faith No More, really. Both are undeniably huge reasons why nu-metal even existed, but they themselves weren't really nu-metal by proxy. I love Deftones more than words can really express, but I don't think they are nu-metal just because they were hugely influential to that scene, if that makes sense. Still, solid video...as long as we're clear that Chevelle was, is, and will always be awesome. I hope you weren't alluding to Chevelle being "mediocre" or, dare I say it, worse than that near the end of the video.
Fun fact: In an interview with Loudwire on their segment "Wikipedia Fact Or Fiction", David Draiman said that he was not inspired by a monkey at a zoo. While practicing, he did that famous thing on "Down With The Sickness", as it just came out of him and they decided to keep it in the song.
Aaaaaaand subscribed :)) Your acting is incredible! You either have a twin brother or good editing skills :). You're such a good actor man :)) Thanks for the awesome bands!
Tbh while the list was fun to watch, I won't lie that I disagree with a huge number of these being nu metal. Yet, I absolutely think early Incubus is nu metal, more so than most of the list (including more so than even the ones I do think count)
Your end argument against nu-metal is wrong in my opinion. nu-metal introduced heavier music to people who would have never listened anything heavier than rock. People didn't abandon heavier music after the end of nu-metal era, many just branched out to other metal genres.
Just have to say, the concept of this video is completely brilliant. I have rarely related to anything on RU-vid as much as a guy about my age arguing with his younger self and coming to terms with a genre that most (some) of us grew out of and has not aged well at all. I moved on from the nu-metal genre sometime around 2004/2005 and most of the artists listed here actually do stir some nostalgic feelings from me. Again, this video is just tremendous and easily one of the best things I've ever seen on RU-vid. Kudos!
This has been a great review. This video really gave me somewhat of a different outlook on rock trends and how different you are from the past, which is more than I expected from a music review. If you get bigger, don't be surprised. Just remember that I watched since the beginning!
Also I personally would've put Korn in spot of Disturbed for the exact same reasons you stated for Disturbed not to mention Korn was one of the first to burst onto the scene. And I personally think that Disturbed didn't really put much out of note since their debut (their last album was especially awful) while Korn at least was able to put out decent music until at least their 3rd or 4th album. Also glad to see Mudvayne considering I think they're commonly overlooked even though LD 50 was a fantastic album in my opinion.
Awesome video. I just subscribed and I'm really loving you're takes on music, and pretty much all of the bands you talk about. I too am a punk enthusiast/musician. I almost died when I saw you put Bad Religion on your top 10 bands. They're one of my favs.
Even though I was born in ‘06, this music is really a nostalgia trip, because my town in Ohio had most of its development in the late 90’s, and certain areas (especially the mall area) are very trapped in that time period. The reason why it’s nostalgic is probably because those were some of the first memories I made.
It's not called Pogo, it's called "Bounce". And they belong at #1. My honorable mentions are Alien Ant Farm, Saliva, Avenged Sevenfold, Evanescence, Marilyn Manson and Maximum the Hormone.
@@SlytheWarrior Yeah I was pretty wasted when I wrote that. I just like to think nu metal is a very inclusive genre, A7X may not be nu metal musically but they certainly slotted themselves in the scene
You sir, can really sing. *claps* you have a great voice, especially when you sang the vocal harmonies of chop suey by S.O.A.D, Are you a trained singer? Please sing for my metalcore band, lol
I love Back To School. Even though it is a really silly song by Deftones standards, the instrumentals makes it up and Chino's vocals doesn't fail to impress me. Even his rapping is very impressive. Although there are better songs on White Pony ( Change, Pink Maggit, Digital Bath), it's still one of my favorite Deftones songs.
Awesome video man. I really like the concept, I was never into Nu-Metal but I really enjoyed the video. I would love to see more of these. The only thing I was wary about going into this video was the length, but the video was interesting enough to hold my attention all of your videos are keep up the good work!
Cody Warren Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, I actually didn't intend for this video to go Hour-plus, but given that the entire script is basically a big debate between two characters, I couldn't pull it off without going all out. The next episode will cover a single album and I'm thinking I'll be able to keep it much more concise. I'll certainly try at least.
Have you listed to their stuff lately? Yeah, it is pretty definitively Nu-Metal, but... It also doesn't hold up very well either. I dunno. That could just be me, but for this list I also took into account how well the music holds up today, and Korn just couldn't pass that test. Once you mature past 15, they just become kinda unlistenable. To me at least. I did leave a small mention of them at the end of the video. They were definitely one of the forefathers of the genre, but were they good? ...Eh, I say no, but everyone's got a right to their own opinion here.
+The Rock Critic Their new music is pretty meh, but I just can't agree with you about the old. Old Korn is some of the most passionate music I could ever put to ear. Granted they have their moments of immature "shock" factor, but they produced some of the most emotionally impacting music that came from the 90s. Not to mention how innovative their music is, even for Nu Metal. Other than minor resemblances with the vastly inferior Adema, there was never a Nu Metal band that sounded like Korn.
In my opinion, here's a list of my favorite nu-metal bands: Linkin Park System of a Down P.O.D. Taproot TRUSTCompany Saliva Papa Roach Disturbed Adema Staind Fire From The Gods From Ashes to New
I still maintain, over the years, that their self-titled is kind of the only album that contains even surface elements of nu-metal for System. Good list, as far as I can judge.
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!! to be honest tho… I LOVED BACK TO SCHOOL BY DEFTONES ITS SUCH A GUILTY PLEASURE. I’ve been listening to it since middle school and listened to it on my first and last day of senior year in highschool it just feels so good. it’s sloppyish, loud, trashy, just everything my highschool years were so i fell in love with it!!
One of the finest hours I've spent procrastinating... I seem to remember Hurt from my childhood, particularly the video for Rapture popping up on the Metal music channels occasionally. Thank you for reintroducing me :)
Joseph James Happy to oblige. Yeah, Rapture was all over the place, but give their other albums a try. Particularly the ones I mentioned in the videos. I think you'll be quite surprised. I know I was back in the day.
Impressive stuff! You did a great job with this video. System of a Down is definitely my favorite Nu-metal band. I personally wouldn't call Rage a nu-metal band, but I would say that they are one of the biggest influences of the genre.
DamnedGamers That debate's been going on for years, and when I was writing this episode I honestly couldn't make up my mind completely either. Hence, the shouting match that the two get into at the end. And thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
@@TheIntenseLime yeah emo in the EARLY 2000s was pretty badass like the first the used album and afi sing the sorrow. but even the newer emo, punk and post hardcore bands are 10 billion times better than a piece of dogshit lying on the floor for 5 years until it gets all gray and even worse than before, yeah am talking about trap, the only musical genre that is not even MUSIC but a bunch of autistic noises over a lousy BEAT. i would take the worst kind of EMO everyday compared to this dogshit
I'm a die-hard Nu Metal fan and, despite the fellow gentleman's constant bashing of the genre (along with many other of his videos) i really, really enjoyed this video.Beautifully crafted, well executed video/list with a lot of originality.Best thing is hands down how you managed to put your present and your "past" self in the same place. And there were some funny moments every now and then.Awesome stuff. This was also the first video of you i ever watched, now i watch all of your stuff :) The only pitfall is,like i said before, the constant bashing of Nu Metal even outside this video. Not trying to fanboy here, just saying it got very old/annoying.Sure,it's your opinion and all that, but i think we all get it,it's just not your thing.Otherwise, fantastic video and fantastic channel in general.Keep up with the amazing work! P.S. Incubus IS Nu Metal (S.C.I.E.N.C.E./Make Yourself era) deal with it people ;)
I was so not expecting hurt to appear on this list, that win intro to Bracket 10 ton brick] came on, it took me about five seconds to recognize who you were introducing. I think it is awesome on how high your opinion is on one of my favorite bands and a band Who I think deserve A lot more than what they got.
Great review, very concise for such a broad subject. Also i haven't seen anyone really point it out yet but you are a pretty good singer; Your scream even though you cut it short for comedy was good as well. Sub Achieved
In my opinion Deftones is the best Nu Metal band ever. Their discography is impressive, White Pony and Around The Fur are maybe the two best Nu Metal albums ever.
Dude the up in production value was the best decision ever. Loved the rise and fall of weezer, and im loving all of your other videos too. Keep being awesome! :D
I know I'm not the first to say this but, LINKIN PARK? they were fucking excellent, Meteora is one of my favourite albums ever. Oh well, to each their own. I seriously wanted to get into Mudvayne on the principle that their original makeup looked cool, sadly Dig is the only song i can say i like. **UPDATE** Mudvayne fucking rock.
Linkin Park was one of the bands that manage to show equal love for rock, hip-hop and electronica without marring any of them like their rock-rap peers. Chester Bennington's voice and lyrics describes alienation, mental health, recovery and various other things in poetic ways and with honest emotion, and Mike Shinoda's rapping feels more at home with the tracks than it would with most rap rockers trying to have an equal balance of both in vain. Not to mention that they are always looking for fresh ways to approach their formula of mixing rap, rock and electronica every album. Plus, Collision Course!
me, who likes nu metal & just found this channel yesterday: oh boy! this sounds like a fun video to learn more about new & different nu metal bands i may not know of!
Putting aside the fact I strongly disagree with the implication that most of everything else in nu metal is worse than Back To School (I don't dislike the song btw) "Even when Deftones went actual nu metal" What does that mean? Back To School isn't the first song in their early nu metal days where they rapped (7 Words, Engine No. 9, and Headup all had rapping even if it was more screamed rapping there).
Samuel Lasky It was no easy task, I can say that much. Had to pull some trickery in both recording and post, but I think we were able to pull it off fairly well. Thanks again!
some good nu metal = Deftones, Nothingface, Helmet (if they count, their 1994 album "Betty" is more creative & mature than 99.9% of the nu-metal genre), Flapjack, and System of A Down, oh yeah and Angel Dust by FNM, which is sadly an obvious influence, but that album is automatically better than the genre without even trying. Limp Bizkit & Fred Durst's voice is basically aural rectal cancer.
so I'm only now watching this, long after its release. I just wanted to say that the effects and writing were awesome, you deserve more credit than you get.
I just want to say that this is not just an awesome video, it's a really unique one. I've never really seen a comparison of present and past taste in this way before. It was really well done dude, you should be proud of this video. Also while Rage of the Machine is a great band, I actually do think SOAD is better. While you can make fun of them for their goofy lyrics, I think it was part of their charm and in actuality those lyrics tend to mean more than you think. Pogo for example, isn't actually about pogoing. The pogo is [Serj's] dick and the song was actually about him having an orgy. What I like about the band is that they liked to fuck around, made goofy and weird songs or just sung about sex just for fun but also had really intelligent things to say politically and it was a great balance. Rage Against the Machine like I said was still a stellar band, but they didn't hit me in nearly the same way SOAD did. If you prefer them that's cool. Again though, really great video man!
***** Also forgot to mention, I never once thought of SOAD as Nu Metal, they were always a hard rock band in my eyes. so I was actually pretty surprised to see them on the list.
My god this was an amazing video. Keep up the good work man. I'll definitely check out some of these bands, and you're right you can't really write off any genre of music as not having anything of substance, the good shit rises to the top usually, and there is something to appeal to everyone in any genre, you just have to look.
The Rock Critic On a somewhat unrelated note, are you planning on reviewing Incubus's new EP Trust Fall Side A? I think it's a fresh, and great indication of where they are in 2015, they seem rejuvenated and have passed the dark patch of INNW (still a great album, but the band admitted it was a dark time for the band). It's polarising music as usual, but that's what I love about them, they aren't content to rest on their laurels they just write music they like and if people like it then that's great. As a musician I have so much respect for them, I'm just glad they are still making music and are loving it and letting their musical compass take them to new places. Make Out Party is great, despite some silly and overtly sexual lyrics, but it nails this grooving Soundgarden meets Prince vibe, and I love that, it's so surprising and refreshingly unique. DLYD is a great energetic, and fun song that I can't help but groove to, and that gospel singer they have in the breakdown and choruses is brilliant. Trust Fall is already becoming a classic and is easily the most accessible song for hardcore fans, it has shades of all their past work yet sounds new as well. And I love the way the synth and other layers weave and meander through the texture of Absolution Calling. Sorry for the essay but Incubus are probably one of my favourite current bands and I wanted to voice my biased opinion (being a huge fanboy of them).
Ooh, loved this video. The "where are they now" and general time-travel jokes (and that callback to the Raditude review; wasn't expecting that!) all hit it out of the park. As a *Rock Band* player, I was introduced to a ton of nu-metal, and they were generally really fun to play both as guitarists and vocalists. System of a Down's picks (Hypnotize, Chop Suey, BYOB, and a couple more) showed off their variety in tone but also their skill, and Disturbed were on the second game's disk with Down With the Sickness, which is just a blast (can't say I can quite pull off that Ooh-ah-ah-ah-ah, though XD). My first guitar game, GH3, also started me off with Stricken. Slipknot were also on both my Guitar Hero and Rock Band introductions with Before I Forget, and I definitely grew a taste for the group's insanity. I even appreciated songs like Snuff, though I imagine that won't be the case for most. Out of the bands new to me on this list, I'd definitely say Hurt looks the most interesting; I'll be sure to check them out soon! P.S. Was the end gag a clip from something or a cameo?
RhythmGameAddict Thank you very much. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Actually the "gag" after the credits is just an outtake. It was really funny and cute and it's in reference to the very last scene anyway, so I figured I could slip it in for a goof. Oh, And I was a huge Guitar Hero nut back in the day myself! I might do an episode on the GH/RB series if I can ever get my hands on a capture device. I'm glad both series are making comebacks. It will be interesting to see what direction they take things.
The Rock Critic Thanks for responding! I guess I should've clarified with the gag: not after the credits, but the actual shots of "Old Rock Critic" from the front. I could tell from the post-credits that it wasn't the same person who knocks your hat off, so who was it? (I see in another comment you mention having arranged the shot) Sorry for the confusion!
Oh, I see. No worries. Actually, fun fact, "Future Crash" is being played by my dad! The original idea was for me to just dress up like an old man with make-up and prosthetics, but it would have been costly and it would have looked hokey as all hell. We shot his scenes as the very first thing. He and I live in different parts of the state, so I had to shoot him on a green screen at his place and have my buddy Zach stand in for the physical/BTB shot. Basically this whole episode is just me toying with the green screen and learning how to use it properly.
Can we get any more insight into how you wrote this, especially the contrasting opinions? Did you make a list at that age for maybe the first time you entertained doing a webshow but never did, but then later revisited when you found it in old notebook or something? Did you post something on a forum to defend nu metal that makes you laugh a little now? Essentially, are you really this good at writing characters with such contrasting opinions.
I'm thinking of doing a commentary track for this episode some day. If do, a lot of that process will probably be explained. The short version though is, I wanted to kinda make fun of myself for some of the bands I used to like as a kid, but then thought, "wait, wouldn't my younger self still want to defend his opinion, regardless?"
I can see how you might not want to include Korn because you felt you couldn't recommend a full album because it "didn't age well," but pretty much every album up to Take a Look in the Mirror features at least one or two good songs worth checking out.
The Rock Critic Thank you! By the way, I’ve been binge watching your content all night. It’s like 3:30 AM where I’m at, and I don’t even care haha. Admittedly, I was a bit skeptical when I first found your channel, mostly due to the rather intimidating run-times of a lot of your videos (and I may have left a negative comment or two...sorry ‘bout that), but after watching a few of your videos in their entirety, I am officially sold. You are now one of my favourite content creators on RU-vid. Your videos are not only great musical critiques, but they are very informative as well. They also contain some genuinely funny comedy, and great editing. Your nu-metal video was particularly entertaining, and your Weezer retrospective was phenomenal. I am completely convinced that this is, hands down, the single most underrated channel on RU-vid. Keep up the good work Crash, my man. Cheers!
@Andy Salter That I guess is why LP never was to my liking. It was just too overproduced, clean cut, family friendly angst. It was just too polished and didn't feel genuine. And my god "In The End" really annoys me to this day.
You think Nu Metal made rock look bad, with their bitching and generic beats? Look at majority of pop music from 2015/2016. They are far, _far,_ *far* worse...
Tell me about it. Give me "Down With The Sickness," "Poem," "Headstrong," "Alive," and "In The End" over "Work," "Pillowtalk," "Work From Home," or any Justin Bieber or Taylor Swift song, anyday.
Good video as always, the only criticism was that I expect the video to be as long as the early Weezer episodes or the 10 favorite bands episode, haha. :P
PurpleGuySenpai Actually, I think I said I was going to keep this one shorter, but when I was editing VO's and shooting live footage I realized that just wasn't going to be possible. I'm hoping to make the next full-length a bit less exhaustive. (Even though I feel like I always say that. I promise, one day I'll actually get it right. :P)
1. How did Audiovent get thrown into the conversation? They were straight rock music. 2. ALL HAIL (early) MUCHMUSIC CANADA! 3. "Please tell me At the Drive-In got back together!" So, I hope you told the younger you the good news.
I subscribed to your channel bc of the great weezer vids! I even had tears from the most recent weezer vid u made! Love the work you do and I hope it pays off! One question? Where does KORN belong in this and why no mention? Thanks! Rise and fall of Korn??? Makes a guy wonder!
sd1cali2 Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. I do recognize that Korn was a very important band to the genre, but this list was personal, and I just never cared that much for Korn. I made small nods to them throughout the episode (like at the very end for example), but I didn't want to put them on the list just because I felt like I had to. Good band for their genre, sure, but I was just never a rabid follower.
My biggest problem with this list is, well, what the hell even is Nu-metal?! The Deftones? Disturbed? Slipknot? Rage Against the Machine? A PERFECT CIRCLE? I wouldn't call these bands any more Nu-metal than Mushroomhead or Faith No More. Nu-metal had a very definitive sound and I these bands simply don't have that sound. They have more definitive influences, they're a more definitive mix, and I wouldn't put them within the Nu-metal genre myself. Also, no love for Sepultura and Soul Fly?! You make me sad...
Really hope your videos have progressed since you made this. I was really interested in what you had to say, but couldn't hear it for fear of blowing out my speakers on the goofy sound effects.
