Great video man. I'm surprised though, that the Gyan's bomb/missile shield wasn't mentioned as being the first time we saw an offensive shield in the animated Gundam franchise.
i was expecting 1- RX-78GP02A Gundam Physalis = NR-Sh-02-RX/S-00013 Shield. 2- A) XXXG-01D2 Gundam Deathscythe Hell = Buster Shield (improved version of the original Buster Shield). B) RX-END Gundam The End = Guard Form. C) XXXG-01L2 Gundam Livelance Heaven = Active Cloak. 3. YMS-15 Gyan = Missile (Needle Missile & Hide Bomb)/ Shield. 4. XXXG-00W0 Wing Gundam Zero = Wing shield. E.T.C
How about top 10 knives/daggers? Because no one normally wants them if there's a larger blade lying around. Or top 10 best/most effective usage of head mounted vulcans. (If there's even 10 of such moments)
Hmm.. I think the GP02 should at least get a honorable mention. When you see someone with a shield that big and bulky, you can be forgiven for getting scared. Also, I think the shield Build Strike gundam deserves a mention too. It also absorbs beams from enemy weapons to empower itself and can generate a booster field for high mobility shenanigans.
It's also neigh indestructible in gbo2 boasting around 10k-20k hp BASE without reinforcement through optional parts or enhancements(if it has any) I don't own either version of it and I haven't played in a long time so I could be off on some things
@@MobiusGT Those vents are part of the cooling system housed in the shield to disperse the heat generated from being within range of a nuclear blast. Hence another part of why that shield is so massive.
I’d say the Gusion Rebake’s shield could be an honorable mention. Big, houses the huge halberds, and simply the fact that it’s made from the ass of the previous Gusion before the remodeling.
The Gusion Rebake Full City has one of the coolest shields in mecha-dom. Giant scissors that can crunch a whole Mobile Suit is so very viscerally satisfying, and having it condense into a shield that can also be set as skirting armour is such an cool enigneering approach from a design standpoint.
@@chasinthroughthedecade thematically, I thought the concept of the Satellite Cannon as a parallel towards Garrod's character development was amazing. Satellite cannon is a super powerful but unwieldy weapon and got destroyed due to his lack of experience and arrogance against a newtype level pilot. He gets the X-Divider as a more pragmatic upgrade for combat use as he's still continuing to develop as a person. Once he gains the perspective, empathy, and resolve - he gets the Double X, capable of bearing the responsibility to fire a weapon that can change the course of history. One of the best moments in the Gundam franchise is the "Too bad I'm a liar Your Excellency" and the insane pinpoint accuracy needed to do that is bonkers. And yes, I'll definitely be buying the RG X models when they come out hahaha.
@@Zertemis rise from the ashes is seriously in need of a next gen update port. I wanna believe crossfire on ps3 was gonna be that successor but sadly it wasn't good at all
I like how there's only two things on this list that are primarily for defense. You know, the thing a SHIELD is for. Then there's things like the Gyan's shield, which ironically I'd be hesitant to use in that capacity, what with it being packed full of explosives.
Maybe Zeon higher ups share your opinion. Even if you remove the mobile suits from the equation, a massive shield still won the mass production deal against a shield full of bombs.
the RX-78GP02A Gundam Physalis sheild was made with a liquid nitrogen cooling system so the gundam could survive the blast wave from the MRK-82 nuclear bazooka it was equipped with. aka anti nuke shield
Man when I see the Awakened Unicorn going sicko mode with the shields floating around it, I lose my absolute shit! I love it so much! 😍 In SRW V, there is a animation for the Beam Saber attack when at the end the shields move behind the Unicorn to protect it from the enemy exploding, and it's such a cool little detail. Also, shout-out to the X-Divider for being a 100% better optional weapon for the X Gundam, when the only other option is the Satellite Cannon!
Being a Wingnut, some of my favorites are no surprise. The Wing Zero's pile bunker shield, and of course the Deathsythe/Hell Buster Shield. Honorable mentions go to the Bawoo and Hamma Hamma for having multiple beam cannons in their shields.
@@Tucker0603 It only showed up once briefly after the Gundam appeared. Quatre still piloted the suit and was walking inside a colony randomly breaking buildings with it. Apparently the staff forgot it existed after that because it was never seen again, but it featured in most lineart of the shield.
Technically anime Heavyarms' shield is 1 with the Beam Gatling(s). The EW versions just have a shield attached on the gatling and no shield in EW Custom's.
@@Tucker0603 in the episode Quatre invaded the colony and shot the spike at the tip of the shield into a building and comtemplates destroying all colonies - Heero comes in with Mercurius and ridicules Quatre.
When I saw the Blitz, I was hoping we would see the Providence's shield as well. If two more beam guns in addition to the 44 the machine already had wasn't enough, then you've got a gigantic beam saber that is larger than most of the anti-ship swords in SEED. I also always had a soft spot for the Mercurius' Crash Shield, despite how little it did.
I find it interesting that the Aegis is named after a shield, but has a rather straight forward plate of armor. But it's the Aegis Knight that actual arms said shield.
The Trikeros shield arm have one big weakness, cut-off the arm and 90% of your weapons are gone, as evidenced by the Blitz, using a lance from the broken arm against the sword Strike, but on the other hand, it is one of the best shield arms, having used by Amatsu Mina Gold Astray and Nebula Blitz.
Your not wrong, it pretty much filled the purpose of the Gold Astrays main arsenal and gave Gina and Mina the Stealth functions of the Blitz for the Gold all the way from Gina's variant to Mina's retrofit when she to possession after Gina died. Although funny to think that was only the THIRD time Gina had stolen tech from the Alliance for his Astray: 1st was the Gold Frame's design to begin with 2nd was the Duel's Railgun 3rd was the Blitz's arm for all the above in this video
Note that when it's pass on Amatsu, they remove the beam saber and instead sharpen the tip. Mostly because using the beam saber while turn invisible would give away its position.
The GM Guard's shield is also cool cos it has vulcans in it. Using it in GBO2 is what made me warm up to Raid types in that game. Normally i only use Supports but there's Raids i like using.
I think another interesting honorable mention, besides the GP02 that I have seen, is the Zeta Gundam's shield. It started a small trend that when a mobile suit transforms, the shield becomes the front, and we know what happened to Scirocco.
i know it's more of a binder situation than shields, i feel like the kshatriya's worth a honorable mention, as it's got a little bit of everything. some subarms, container for the bits, and 2 mega particles on each, on top of being a thicc protection that the mobile suit could cover itself from 4 angles making it a fortress that shoots back
@@fauxvier8519 I think they are active. 4 I-Fields activating at full power would drain too much energy even for a monster like Kshatriya so they're either activated when needed or just covers the outside of the binders itself to conserve energy. I also have reasons to believe the latter possibility because, while beam shots don't scratch the binders, Unicorn's saber DOES cut them apart and stab through them even though I-Fields are well capable of blocking beam sabers (read: Unicorn defending against Banshee). It adds to another possibility that Kshatriya's individual I-Fields may be too weak to block a beam saber.
@@fauxvier8519 I would have believed it to be a plot hole or oversight if it only happened once. But since it happened four times AFAIK (first battle, Unicorn sliced one same binder clean off twice and third battle, Unicorn stabbed through a binder and slashed another in half) I think it's intentional.
I forget if Build Series is considered or not but the Absorb Shield the Star Build Strike had is pretty damn good able to absorb beams and convert them to energy to power up the special systems of the gunpla
I have a perfect grade gp01 and I modified The Shield to hold two Gatling guns into it, so now my gpo1 Gundam can go Brrrrrrrrrrrrr just like the Gundam heavyarms.
The shield of the Rx-78 GP02A Gundam should definitely get an honorable mention in this list. It housed the "business end" of its Atomic bazooka and it also emitted a field of coolant to protect the unit after launching the Mk82 warhead
Am I completely alone in wanting a mildly comedic but still mostly serious series following the Dom Trooper pilots from Seed Destiny? Like, get the writers behind Full Metal Panic involved, the characters feel like a good fit for that.
6:26 Yes! Definitely one of my favorites! The Delta Kai in general is amazing, one of the first MS I built in Lego. If anyone is interested I made a Star Wars x Gundam stop motion that shows what happens to an Imperial star destroyer when hit with a well placed blast from the high mega cannon.
What about the psycho plates of the gundam MK IV G doors which can not only just block attacks at all directions but can be used as swords and melee funnels to rip enemies to shreds
Ack a shame Zabanya or Cherudim wasn't mentioned for their unique GN Shield Bits and GN Holster Bits! Those are my faves! Oh and Gp02 I see people mentioning but yeah it was actually used as a cooling system for the gundam itself which is quite epic. Good episode!
The gouf custom with gatling shield in Gundam Breaker 3 was amazing. Sadly, once you equip it as either a machine gun, with a built in shield or vice versa. There are no abilities with built in shields. It's still bad ass but there are other weapons and shields in the game.
Pretty sure if you were to attempt to use Kira Yamato as a shield, like say a grenade was tossed your way and you pulled him in front of it at the last second, only YOU would be riddled in shrapnel while he’d somehow be perfectly clean.
@@DamplyDoo Ya fam it's coming to Steam and i believe it will be cross-platform thankfully. They released a new gameplay trailer from Gundam fest not gonna lie i do like they added u can cut grunts in half.
Rising Gundam's shield is an honorary mention since the pilot Rain not only is NOT a gundam fighter but she also was going against Walter Gundam being piloted by a severely brainwashed Allenby Beardsley who got a double boost from both the Berserker System and DG Cells and the shield held its own. The only problem was the shield had to be dismounted for Rising Gundam's bow.
I would like to add that GOUF CUSTOM's greatest shield feature were it's shape and angles that were used to deflect the course of shell bullets, avoiding direct impact.
The true Swiss Army knife shield should go to the Infinite Justice's Shield, given its laminated, has a beam shield extension, beam boomerang which can be beam blade too and a grappling hook. Though for me I'd prefer the GM Striker's Shield since you can never go wrong with a pile bunker attached to a shield :3
The GM Guard Custom's shield actually _is_ armed (at least in Gundam Battle Operation 2). Those holes on either side actually contain Gatling guns similar to the Alex's arm-mounted ones, allowing it to shoot and defend simultaneously. That said, it definitely doesn't look it at first glance, so I'm guessing you saw those, and thought they were firing ports, like what's on the shields of the Freedom and Justice.
Always appreciate the videos. You should so something on the fields of war during the One Year War and why every map I can find is a band across the earth that doesn't come anywhere close to Jaburo although they knew where it was when they accidentally Britished Australia.
Since the gatling gun is on top of the shield I'd say the goof carries a shield with a gatling gun as opposed to a gatling gun with a shield. And the Photon Armor shield is just the best because it's both simple and complicated.
I'm a sucker for the shields from Virgo and the Mercurius the Planet Defensors from Gundam Wing. Largely cause like many Canadians from the 90's Wing was my first Gundam but I love how Virgos could link their Defensors together to make bigger or stronger shields or how Zechs used three Mobile Dolls for their shields to really over power three other Gundams. Besides that the classic Gatling Shield is just a chef kiss level of perfect for me.
My personal favourite is TR-6 Woundwort's Composite Shield Booster. It can be a claw, long range beam gun, heat blade, I-field generator, and be a mobile bit.
Possibly the most fave cover vid to date, and well done. Its rather a fitting result that the 10 Best also noten basically, ALL the key defensive add-ons of Gundam shield mythos. Love everything that's here. Now if only Cherubim/Zabanya Gundams' Shield Bits system were more than durable enough to make a mention. Being able to form any sized physical shield, replace the shield formation; and precisely guard multiple incoming attack angles accurate speeds is rather a feat for that universe. (Not even counting many are armed or hold more weapons in Zabanya's case)
By UC standards, beam shield starting from f91 to victory are some of the best shield. Since it is basically beam saber in shield form, you can deflect nearly everything provided you have enough power and your emitter doesn't get hit, or enemy does not have vsbr. You still have to contend with enemy with psycommu bit that will shoot you from any angle but it's not like you face that kind of enemy every day. Also it is common enough to be fit onto grunt suits such as gun ez.
Can we get some love for the Defense Rods mounted on the Flag and Enact? As defensive devices, they're really effective for their low weight and low power consumption. And, of course, they actually require skill to use effectively - which is arguably a negative, but still makes them very cool to watch.
Not sure if we can count the Build Fighters series (seeing as in-universe they're just toys) but the Build Strike's shield is pretty unique and very powerful with its capability to store and discharge opponents' beam attacks.
although technically a gunpla, I personally love the shield on the Star Build Strike, since it's decently sized to not get in the way, able to absorb beam attacks, and use the absorbed energy on the Build Strike itself.
The Star Build Strike's absorb system is one of the coolest concept introduced for a shield, and i'm surprised on why none of the main line series ever come up with something like that yet. Like even the characters know that this system is OP, which is why in later fights the shield was always the first one to be destroyed.
I like the hood old trusty geara doga shield. It looks realistic, militaristic, it folds, it’s big, it has missiles, and can flip around to fire more missiles. It’s not an over the top super weapon that obliterates everything or a plot armor grade defensive fail safe. It’s just cool
I am surprised that Star Build Strike's Beam absorber shield didn't make into this list, because It does the same as the Top 1 in It... Does even more, because It's strategicaly used on the duels to overcome an array of Beam weponry...
The Mystic shield from EMS-TC02 Phantom V2 Custom. A large shield that contains a beam rotor at the center that can generate beam saber, beam shield or beam vulcan. The shield can also transform into a gauntlet for melee uses or to be stored in front of the suit during its MA form. It is possible to deploy i-field through the rotor part at the center of the shield as well.
Actually there are three Shields that I actually really do love the original Gundam shield which basically got upgraded to the stupid defender shield then also you got the ground Gundam Shields that can be used as a barricade and then you got the strike shield which basically can handle a shot from the battleship as well which could actually add whatever you wanted to it
I think the Buster Shield from Gundam 02 Deathscythe in Gundam Wing deserves a mention. I thought for sure it would be on this list. The metal edges open, a beam blade extends from the front, and launches itself spinning at enemy mobile suits, becoming a kinetic weapon.
A little disappointed that the Star Build Strike's Absorb shield didn't at least get an honourable mention. That said, I am glad to see my favorite shield, the Trikeros, on the list. If I were making my own custom designed MS, I'd have a Trikeros on each arm. It's a shame that the model kits for the Blitz only allow for right arm attachment. My other fave shields are the GuAiz-R's shield with it's beam saber, the Exia's mini-shield included with the GN Blade/Rifle (reminds me of the Trikeros) and the Infinite Justice's shield with so many gadgets included.
I always thought that unicorn shield can act as a remote weapon because of the I-field generator work as some kind of minovsky drive not because of the psychoframe magic....but yeah might be wrong on that....
I would argue in favor of the Rx-124 TR-6 Woundwort's Composite Shield Booster is quite the prototype shield itself. It's both a defensive Proto-Shield Booster and houses the Woundwort's weapons and generator for said weapons. Very fun li'l nest of gadgets from one of my favourite Gundam Frames.
I'd give a honorable mention to the crossbone x1 and x2 beam shields, as those don't have the weakness of an exposed emitter and can double as the deadly brand markers
F91 beam shield generator can double as a beam saber generator, an ability which i found out when playing gundam vs gundam if you press guard and melee. Also infinite justice shield comes with lots of stuff on it too 😆 beam shields beam boomerang and a grappling claw
would've been better if bandai added a beam saber effect part for the F91's beam shield generator as well coz not only it does that in the game but it also did that move in the movie as well :/
Glad the V2 got a shout out, one of my favorite gundams. I also like the Atlas for mobility, both versions of Wing zero, Infinite Justice (claw/saber/bomer-rang/beam shield), and Star build Strike. They're not amazing and kinda dont make sense for arm structure, but I also like the idea of the "barrel" window on the freedom/justice's shields as well. The Sinanju/Sazabi big beam axe shields (Sazabi also has missiles) deserve a mention just for how cool they looked and how well they were used.
I am a huge fan of beam shields. The thing is that many gundam series don't exploit what a beam shield is. A beam shield is a beam saber but flattened out on a plane. Meaning that the beam shield can double dip as a beam saber. I mean if a MS has a beam shield, the beam saber is a bit redundant.
