I worked in a chemical lab, and although you certainly didn't want sulfuric acid splashed on you, the stuff we feared the most was Hydrofluoric acid. That stuff goes through your tissues and dissolves your bones. Very nasty stuff.

Yep...and unlike H2SO4, its kept in a plastic containers (as oppose to glass). It's also used in the hit series Breaking Bad as the acid of choice to dissolve dead bodies.

Many schools built before 1980 in my city still have asbestos!
@TrilobiteTerror
@TrilobiteTerror 7 лет назад
Practically all building built before 1980 contain asbestos. Asbestos is only harmful when it becomes airborne (which is why it posses the largest risk to those installing and removing asbestos products). Asbestos is still allowed in certain building materials when it's combined with binding substances that make it impossible for it to become airborne (meaning it poses no risk to anyone).

There's a certain isotope of cobalt that is extremely harmful. It emits twice the amount of gamma radiation. Gamma radiation basically turns the insides of people into mulch. Essentially punching holes into the molecules of a person's body. If you watch any movie where the victim of radiation is vomiting white stuff, that white stuff is the stomach itself due to the gamma radiation. This particular isotope of cobalt can be found in crud which is a byproduct of reactors. It's rare and as long as the cobalt is inside the crud, it's not a problem. But just a tiny bit of the cobalt is 100% fatal when exposed

#4, Cesium (or Caesium) is the most reactive stable element on the periodic table of chemical elements (besides Francium of course). It reacts violently with water, exploding the instant the metal touches it. It's so sensitive that even the moisture in the air makes it catch fire (it's the most pyrophoric [pi-row-FOR-ik] substance we know of). It's also so dangerous to have around, that it needs to be transported in a glass ampuole under Argon or Xenon, contained within a pipe bomb, wrapped in tissue and bubble wrap and placed carefully in a small box with FRAGILE and DANGER plastered onto it. It's melting point is so close to room temperature that just holding the ampuole in your hand can melt the metal into what looks like liquid gold. It's also quite expensive (look it up, it's kind of crazy). Cesium has a variety of uses that use only a small amount, such as atomic time. I'm kind of a nerd. I know this kind of stuff. WatchMojo.com failed to mention some of these facts (and I also corrected a mistake). You're welcome.

I once worked for a semiconductor (computer chip) manufacturing company, as a chemical technician. My duties were mainly to keep the “tools” stocked with the chemicals used in the chip making process. I placed tools in quotes because although “tools” is the industry name for the machine, it is basically a million dollar+ robot. Anyways, many of these machines use highly, HIGHLY caustic, corrosive and acidic substances. While many were very dangerous in their own right, the most terrifying to me was Hydrochloric Acid. It’s so dangerous, that if this chemical in its liquid state comes in contact with as little as 20% of the human body, you have about a 10% chance of surviving. The reason for this is that Hydrochloric acid has a a natural chemical attraction to calcium as it attempts to complete a molecular bond. As our bones are comprised of calcium, this acid will eat it’s way through the skin and muscles until reaching the skeleton. Fortunately there is a calcium jelly that can be used to temporarily neutralize the chemical reaction. However it’s far from capable of saving your life. The only thing you can hope for, is making it to a hospital that has the capability to deal with severe chemical burns. Needless to say, I worked this job for a short period of time before finding something that I wasn’t literally risking my life every day for $12/hr.

What about francium? It might only have a half-life of 20 minutes, but it is even more reactive than caesium.
@paulwilson2204
@paulwilson2204 7 лет назад
A common misconception brought on by the periodic table and the rules of electropositivity. As you move down the table you get more and more electropositive and will more readily give away electrons to form a positive ion, this is what happens when the group 1 elements explode. However, as atoms get larger so does their pull on the electrons that are in the outer shell. Francium is very heavy (atomic weight 223) and as such holds the electrons close enough that its reactivity drops down below that of cesium (atomic weight 132).
@jellysquiddles3194
@jellysquiddles3194 7 лет назад
The list is just plain bullshit. Francium is a million times more deadly than uranium, pollonium and plutonium combined, BECAUSE of it's short half-life. Take 1g of a radioactive substance. If it has a half-life of 1 year it means 0,5g will have neutralized in 1 year, giving up it's radioactive energy. If you have 1g of a substance that does the same in 20 minutes you have all of that energy in 20min that the other substance needed ONE YEAR for. Because of it's short half-life large amounts of francium effectively cooks itself by it's own-produced thermal energy. Though because it has such a short half-life there is hardly a concern for us, because not much francium exists at any time on the earth (that isn't artificially produced). The problem with uranium and plutonium is not their radiation, no. It is because both of these metals are EXTREMELY poisonous. If you ate some of either metal, you would die by heavy-metal poisoning, long before you would show any signs of radiation poisoning (except when you'd take that stuff right out of a nuclear reactor).
@jellysquiddles3194
@jellysquiddles3194 7 лет назад
***** Less active in water, yes. But it's radioactivity makes it heat itself up. The larger the mass of the lumb of francium, the hotter it gets (up to the point where it just starts burning with air, but we know that much with cesium already).

Fluroantimonic acid. The most powerful acid known to humanity. It is 10^16 (10 quadrillion) times more powerful than 100% pure sulphuric acid, it eats glass, concrete, it burns things that have already been burned (i.e. ash), and it reacts violently upon contact with water. Fun stuff. Not much is known about the chemical because it is so hard to work with, and as far as I know there are currently no uses for it, and there is no known way to extinguish fires caused by this acid, because it will burn the extinguishing compound too. The only safe way to store it, is in Teflon coated containers, Teflon itself being effectively a byproduct of another superacid - hydrofluoric acid. Speaking of hydrofluoric acid. It’s not quite as awesome as fluroantimonic acid, but still pretty gnarly. If you get it on your skin, you won’t know until 24 hours after it’s too late. The reason for this, is that the acid LOVES calcium. It won’t eat your skin, so much as penetrate your skin and it will eat your bones from the inside out. Because this acid is used so widely in computer pcb and Teflon manufacture for example, there are essentially epipens of an antidote which is basically a calcium gel (calcium gluconate to be exact) so the acid will prefer to eat that instead of your bones. It also dissolves glass. Oh yeah, the treatment regiment. If you are unlucky enough to get a hydrofluoric acid burn, the treatment guidelines specify that under absolutely no circumstances is the victim to be given absolutely any pain relief whatsoever. The reason why, is because they know that when it stops hurting, you’ll probably be ok. The safest form of this acid, is in a dental gel. That’s right - dentists use this shit IN YOUR MOUTH. It’s used to roughen up (read: eat) the surfaces of your tooth so that fillings stick better. It’s concentration in dental form is 9.6%, which is still plenty to do fun stuff with (like eat the plastic and glass layers of computer chips to expose what’s beneath). Azidoazide azide. The most explosive substance in existence. It explodes when heated, cooled, touched, moved, left on a table in a climate controlled room, upon contact with light, and, it explodes for quite literally no reason. It is so explosive that, again, not much is known about it, because it is so hard to do experiments on.
@danielc7581
@danielc7581 5 лет назад
Concentrated Hydrofluoric acid will kill you in like 5 minutes, not 24 hours. It will, as you said, eat the calcium in your body and cause cardiac arrest.

Sulfuric acid really isn't that bad. I once returned to the lab at my job back then to fetch my notes that I left there, while my coworker next to me worked with concentrated sulfuric acid, a test tube and a heater. Long story short: He worked with an air tight system, in which he sealed the corks but forgot to open the valve necessary for the wanted reaction. The test tube logically exploded, since the pressure had no other way of decreasing. I did not wear a lab coat, since my work time was over. So yeah.. Glass shards covered in sulfuric acid were sticking out of my arm and had to be removed and neutralized. I still have some scars, but would it have been phosphoric acid or nitric acid, the scaring would have been much worse. And, in the case of phosphoric acid, my elbow might have caught on fire. :3

Probably asbestos and lead. I live in an area that has horrible water that I have to filter before I drink it. I live in a building that was built back in the 1930s, so asbestos is a very real possibility. I don't know how possible it is for Yellowstone Park to blow it's top but that would be another concern that is way down the list of possibilities.

There is a scale of toxicity which would have been useful in this comparison: LD-50, or Lethal Dose 50%. The amount of material which kills 50 out of 100 of a particular animal per specific body weight. The lower the LD-50 (grams, grains) the higher the toxicity. It was invented in 1927 and has recently been phased out, but it is still a useful tool for comparison.

Clarification on the asbestos topic... while countries may have banned new use, it is still in buildings all over the place, including hospitals, even though previous employees were negatively impacted by the exposure!
