I would have placed Breath of the Wild at number 1 but then again I am a terrible person to judge since I never owned a Zelda title in my life. You could argue that I'm missing out but I have seen my friend play Ocarina of Time on his laptop at school and also I have seen small amount of gameplay for Breath of the Wild by Dawko. I might finish it up by looking at a full series of it. But what a master piece. Also I heard about Cadence Hyrule I love the remixes of the original tune. Also even though I've never played one I sorta came close. Link was in an online game with several Nintendo characters called Super Mario Crossover. Not only that but one of my favourite indie RPG online Epic Battle Fantasy had a version of Twilight Princess in one of the stages in the first game. So as you can see I have seen tons of references to the game

You truly cannot rank these games. Played all of them (yes, even crossbow training) and they're all so vastly different and great in their own right.

Oh wow, who would have guessed OOT would be number one. I personally think BOTW or link to the past should be #1. OOT is more a #2 or 3. Its hard to put these game on list like this though their all great it's more about nostalgia at this point.

And that includes Skyward Sword.

Except triforce heros. It was fun, but not a masterpiece XD ALL the other main games tho were pure gold!

As a kid you wouldn't understand the implication; in fact when I was a kid myself I thought he'd be able to go back home and he _could_ easily live out the rest of his childhood. I thought Navi - for some reason - went through the window to wait for him outside. I understood that darunia and saria were dead yet i failed to correlate the others were too (Sacred Realm is heaven). As I got much older I realize now OoT link is the saddest one. He loses all his childhood friends - save for malon, talon, Epona, and zelda - his childhood, innocence, his family, Navi. There's a cryptic line the happy mask salesman mentions, that some don't like the mask of truth because it might reveal truths they don't want known - namely adults. It took a long time for me to understand what he really meant, and Majora's mask is basically that unveiling of the truth that link goes through in the aftermath of oot. OoT hides the darkness in plain sight, if you understand symbolism, but it's overall tone and the game not dwelling on the deaths, cleverally hides it. It is the "mask" of the hero link and his adventures. Majora's Mask is the face beneath of the boy who's forever changed and traumatized by the events, grief strickened and lost in a world that doesn't remember him or what he did.

I did too. I got it for Christmas 1998 and was baffled at why my parents decided to get me an n64 and the game. I didn't know a thing about the game, I wasn't anticipating it at all. So when my parents bought the system they asked what the hot game was and the clerk told them ocarina of time which they had 1 copy left!! So my parents bought it with NBA 99 and wwf war zone lol. So on Christmas eve we open our gifts and I'm like "Yay (sarcastically)" lol. I got a gameboy color and links awakening dx that year too. So I ended up playing ocarina of time until 3AM just exploring kokiri village trying to get to the deku tree lol because Navi kept nagging me. It truly was a special moment I'll never forget. I've been a huge fan for 22 years.

Me too! I remember the OOT N64 cartridge was HEAVIER than normal carts, and the game showed why. Walking into Hyrule Field for the first time and realising how massive (by 1998 standards) the world in that cartridge was, was truly staggering.

Agreed, I'd say it's easily top 3 in the LOZ franchise alongside OoT and BotW. It's just so radically different and impactful with its story and characters but also as a video game builds on the already successful formula OoT had. It's probably my personal #1 but objectively speaking I'll lowball and say it's just somewhere in the top 3.

@@godsman00 its definately top 3. I think I've always had it slightly behind OoT, but not much. Despite me replaying both a lot, Botw may have the most of amount of time I've spent in a zelda game. But those are def the top 3.

100% agree, I mean what other game has ever had you help a concerned father find his lost daughter. had you help another father mourn the loss of his son. help a mother and father save their kidnapped children as the father's final wish. helped a farm fight off aliens from abducting cows and the little sister, and if you fail the little sister gets her mind wiped, and if you win the older sister still tried to sooth the little sister and dull her to the likely impending doom in the sky. and I've barely scratched the surface still...... MM was a work of art more than OoT in my eyes.

JigInsane I have seen a lot of Majora’s Mask tattoos as of late. Tells you something.

Plus, the soundtrack perfectly compliments the game. Like Stone Tower’s theme: The regular version features Link’s instrument while the inverted one features the instruments used in Majora’s theme. That’s not even scratching the surface too

Though as much as I like breath of the wild, it really doesn't feel like a Zelda game. I actually enjoy the freedom it gives you however I still find it lacks a little in having a progressive storyline due to ganon not really doing anything during your time traveling around. Maybe if in the next one they chuck in good old ganondorf that'll change

@@alshee356 Have I got news for you, m8. Also, BotW was what a Zelda game has always meant to be: an open-world exploration game. People say it changed the formula of Zelda entirely, but while I agree to an extent, when you look at the first games and even many of the others, they were pretty much always meant to be open world. BotW just mastered it, and that's why I personally say it's my favorite.

One car can be objectively faster than another. The duration of a movie can objectively longer than another. A game cannot be objectively better than another game. Deal with it.

My personal favorite is ocarina of time, I love the dungeons and bosses a lot more than breathe of the wild but I absolutely loved breathe of the wild. I also love a link to the past and majoras mask.

Breath of the wild isn’t that great... it’s far from the LOZ formula, there’s only 1 legitimate dungeon, and I know me, along with many other players didn’t feel the satisfaction from big fights, with the small rewards they would give you. I’d even put a link between worlds above BOTW to be honest.

Nope. SS yes because people are too stupid for the motion controls, but Twilight Princess defintely deserved the hate. Twilight Princess is way too easy and the overworld is very empty. Until the gerudo desert, it copied ocarina of time with extra sub gameplays. And after that, it's more like a Marathon of dungeons. TP is very uncreative.

Ocarina is overrated just cause it was the first 3D zelda game. Personally I think skyward sword is the best game its only the most hated game just cause of the controls that only took me like an hour to adapt to, the story is the best in any zelda game and its combat and puzzles is awesome. Breath of the wild is at a close second for me just cause of the repetitive art styles for the 4/5 dungeons and 120/124 shrines

@@basil3272 OOT beats BOTW by only 3 pts on metacritic. Botw is the best selling Zelda game by 4 million plus units. BOTW got near universal 10s on it's review run in a time where that is much harder to achieve than in the 90s when OOT came out. OOT has not aged well (graphically or control wise), BOTWs art style and mechanics will. BOTW is better. Also: the DS version of OoT is the better version to play, now play that and BoTW back to back and tell me which is better.

A link to the past is fun but I think Twilight Princess is better. I know it's opinionated but Twilight Princess was the first zelda game I played that wasn't handheld. I was mesmerized by the open world and the music and the controls on the nintendo wii.

You should if you know you will enjoy the games. Also Animal Crossing can be enjoyed when you share an island but only one person truly has the power to expand the island and set up the stores and stuff so make sure you are that person or someone who will play the most.

Aaron Foster botw is a shit Zelda game it’s a amazing exploration game that’s it. Horrible story, easy puzzles. That’s the three things Zelda is mainly. Oot and MM are the best hands down if we’re talking Zelda. Botw is great for the average fan but not any hardcore fans that want a challenge and good story.

I never got to play Spirit Tracks but PH was great fun as far as I remember. I rented it on Gamefly back in the day. Having a DS and Gamefly account was awesome.

Couldn't agree more. If they can take the gameplay mechanics and overworld from Breath of the Wild and add better and more dungeons, interesting characters, an actual story, a better soundtrack, and more memorable towns and villages for the next game then it will be the best of all time

pizzarollas honestly, I think the 5 dungeons in the game were enough. But, the four divine beasts are way too simple in how to complete them and that’s what keeps BOTW from being absolutely perfect. Hyrule Castle gets a pass on the bad dungeon because it’s super huge and confusing which is good. It’s kinda sad to say the shrines make for better dungeons than the dungeons themselves

Agreed, my only real complaint was the way the main dungeons were handled (and Ganon being too easy tbh). Loved everything else.

I’d also add the music. OoT had the best music in video game history (some will disagree but it’s a popular opinion) and no matter where you go, you hear distinctive music for each dungeon or scene. I think they got lazy on the musical part for BotW, because most of the music is a watered down version of previous songs. And ocarina added many new melodies to the saga. BotW is an awesome some game, but you can’t think of Zelda not having accompanying music, and I think it fell short with this last iteration.

Ocarina of Time 3D was objectively better than the original, but the controls and nostalgia of playing on the N64 is way better

The excessive light took too much away from the Final Boss fight in the 3DS remake. Ganon's cinematic appearance in Ocarina of Time plays a huge role in OOT's greatness (and one reason why it outranks Breath of the Wild).

Iqbalx1 that is a great mechanic and makes for lots of replay ability and makes the story seem more realistic. It also adds tension and makes things fun.

Agreed. I definitely like this list better. I'm glad Twilight Princess isn't as low on the list anymore. I also always thought it was weird that A Link Between Worlds was above Majora's Mask in the original list. Albw is a great sequel, but it can't come close to being as great as MM. Glad they changed that for this list. Just my opinion though.

I think BOTW beats them (maybe not ALTTP which defined my childhood), but the problem is that it's way too time consuming, which makes it hard for me to pick it up again after beating the main quest once. OOT and ALTTP I can pick up any time

@@torkelsvenson6411 actually BOTW is one of the least time consuming. Whether or not you do all the other crap is up to you. It’s pretty easy to beat ganon without touching any place of the map besides his castle. I prefer OoT myself tho

@@dukejohnson1956 I don't think I beat every shrine, but I certainly did a ton of exploration first, and did all the beasts. To me that was what made me love the game so much, to be frank I found the final confrontation with Calamity Ganon pretty underwhelming when looking at the buildup. The most epic battle there is still easily Ocarina of Time.

They're both different games, but at the same time they compliment each other, if you know what I mean. While Ocarina is more plot-focused and almost no sidequests, Majora's Mask has a lot of different stories throughout a main plot (I mean, you literally help people in 4 different regions, but that's all because of Majora), and that means a lot of sidequests too. I think Ocarina is pretty overrated, it overshadows many games in the franchise, and it has some flaws, but it was my 1st Zelda game, and it's great from the beginning to end.

Most of the people who say Ocarina of Time is the greatest game ever made first played it as a child and are blinded by nostalgia or are just parroting things they hear on the internet.

@@Martel4 I was there, I was 8 in 1998 and oot was one of the first games I ever beat. Being revolutionary doesn't guarantee lasting quality. GoldenEye was revolutionary but if you play it now it's nigh on unplayable. Ocarina of Time is a good game don't get me wrong it's just not the greatest game ever made and pales in comparison to many modern games. Many people are just blinded by the nostalgia of Ocarina of Time and can't look at it objectively.

It's a good game, no question. But for me it is just no Zelda game. Change the names of carackters and locations and nobody could identify it as a Zelda game anymore. It just lost it's charme and I hope we get some of that back in the sequel. Namely: Dungeons, Items and more than 5 enemies.

Breath of the wild is the best open world game ever made, better than the witcher 3, horizon zero dawn, red dead redemption 2 and more, at least in the freedom aspect.

To be fair, not being on this list or being low on it isn't the same as saying the games suck. They're all fantastic.

@@DiReplay skyward sword and Breath of the wild sucks - it isnt really zelda anymore, im very sad about the last both 3d titles - it is just a shame to oot,mm,tp,ww and all other zelda titles Nintendo makes me angry; botw2 looks better, but it will be the next zelda game which isnt a real zelda game - but still hold the hope until nintendo kill it again

@@dominikstute5810 Zelda games have always changed and tried new things. They're every bit as much a Zelda game as the others. Just because you may have not liked them doesn't make them less of a Zelda game.

Anonimous SS is my second favorite of all time. BotW is the only one that can beat it.

Just played through it for the first time. I hated it. Consistent control issues and a boring empty world. I disagree with people who say the dungeon designs were amazing. I found them to be pretty simple and uneventful

It just felt repetitive it's the only Zelda I played once and never again... but I would play again if they did a remaster on switch.. I want a full hd remake for all the Zeldas on switch though.

@@linkheroofspiritsakatrains4812 the main story is super short, but to me the focus of the game is the side missions for the masks and what you can do with them, the moon part where you can use them to get the final mask is proof. And some masks have some really emotional moments, it's basically you bringing hope to a world that already gave up on itself.
