Austin is a no. Rangers will claim that as territorial rights. Same with the Astros. They are not moving another team into Texas after the fight with the O's. Which is still going on by the way.
It makes zero sense to put another stadium in St. Pete, they seriously need to figure out their smartest move is moving the team to Orlando, the proposed stadium is going essentially walking distance from one of the biggest convention centers in the US,just how many more people will that bring in,all those conventions end at 4-6pm and then all those thousands of attendees have nothing to do,the theme parks dont close that late,Animal Kingdom and the Universal parks have closing times between 6-8pm,staying right there to watch a game is pretty appealing. Then the central location in the state will bring people from the east and west coast and metro Orlando population is growing at a staggering rate, seems so silly to commit the Rays to playing way out there past Tampa, just crossing the Skyway bridge is scary AF!!
It would still be a hard uphill battle, especially if they rebrand. The thing you fail to mention and/or realize is that those convention goers aren't as lucrative as you would think and neither are the local fans on either coast. Mostly because the vast majority of them aren't from Florida originally and those that are often have allegiances baked in from their parents or other familial ties. Best of luck, but that market isn't as sustainable as building a new stadium in Tampa proper would be.
@@truejacksonveep Spring training games when the Braves were at Disney and generally in Florida are usually super popular and would always sell out.Orlando gets 74 million visitors a year and has a population just short of the Tampa metro, the Orlando Magic have no issues with attendance and get a lot of tourists at the games.Baseball has generally failed in Florida,The Rays constantly have good teams and nobody goes to the games, not moving them to Orlando would be a huge mistake.Maybe if baseball wasn't a summer sport all those snowbirds in the west coast of Florida would give it a chance but another stadium in St Pete, that's lunacy!!They wouldn't rebrand, they would just be the Orlando Rays!
Austin would be a nightmare. I went there right before the pandemic and the infrastructure hasn't caught up with the population boom. I was stuck in traffic most of the time and can barely find a parking spot in the city. Also most of the people are relocated tech bros from silicon valley. They priced the original residents out.
I am an Utahn I wouldn't be opposed of them having a expansion team As Long as they are Not an bad team or the Athletics hell i know everyone and their momma want the A's to stay in Oakland Vegas is BS honestly they dont deserve a team that's bs
Nashville and give Vegas an expansion team, A's stay in Oakland and they take that waterfront project that the city approved. Bc A's fans deserve to keep them in Oakland
@jamesmcdonald9025 that's simply not true. They have it but they're done supporting their owner who doesn't invest in any way, whether it's in the front office, the field, the stadium. He's made the place a literal baseball hellscape. He doesn't give people a reason to want to go. I mean damn even the Rockies give their fans a reason to show up and they're trash almost every year
Montréal ownership following Bronfman was poor literally in cash and in management ability. He Expos have drawn over 2 million fans and could do it again with the right ownership.
@@TheMikemontreal Problem is still the economic system in MLB they don't share Local TV revenue like the NFL does which makes it hard for Canada sports teams in general to make money. They also have to pay everything in U.S Dollars so the exchange rate hampers them as well. For the NHL before the new labor agreement almost 1/2 the teams based in Canada were about to go bankrupt. It is just hard to make it work international. Blue Jays are an exception because they are in such a big city and have national TV across Canada.
The A's gave up their San Jose territorial rights to the Giants when the Giants were working San Fran politicians to replace Candlestick but the Giants never gave the rights back. Then when the A's tried to build a stadium in San Jose years ago, the Giants vetoed it and Bud Selig backed the Giants. That's part of the reason we are where we're at with the A's situation.
When you look at Raleigh, you have to take Durham and Chapel Hill into account, which moves the metro population over 2 million. For Charlotte and Raleigh, you have to take into account the other large metro areas in the Carolinas like Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Greenville, Spartanburg, Fayetteville, and Columbia. The expanded market is up around 10 million, and that is a lot of potential fans. A team that isn't run like the Panthers should do well in that area.
Yes! They'd be building a stadium in an existing entertainment district - one that would get cleaned up with an MLB presence. I'd love to see it with a brick facede that looks like it's from the 1910s so it fits in with Ybor.
SLC logistically is in a good location between Colorado, Arizona, and the teams on the west coast. Montreal needs the Expos. WE need the Expos. I don't think Columbus or Indianapolis will get a team because of the Reds.
Don't forget Columbus Clippers are AAA affiliate of Cleveland Guardians (formerly Indians which I'm old school) and here in Columbus, it's split between Reds and Guardians roughly, plus arguably Pirates and Cards. Indianapolis Indians are AAA affiliate of the Pirates. Nonetheless, agree on geographic reasons among other factors to not have one. Haven't even mentioned Detroit Tigers. Besides, there's been so much history that both Columbus & Indy each have in terms of AAA baseball. Think originally Columbus was the founding headquarters of AAA baseball with IL (International Leage).
I think thought should be given to balancing out any future plans for REGIONAL LEAGUES. So one team in the South East and another in the West/Mountain region might make the most sense. So I say Charlotte and Salt Lake City ✌️
San Jose is the best option because it’s in an excellent market! A lot of money here and very diverse! An hour away from San Francisco Giants! I live here and MLB dropped the ball when they didn’t overturn Giants territory rights in 2013 when San Jose had funding and available land for A’s! Dont get me wrong, Salt Lake is an excellent choice too
Hypothetically speaking, I wonder what would happen if Vegas goes ahead and says no to the A's and all of a sudden throw their name in a hat for expansion. Would Vegas still be a legit contender when weighed against the competitive possibilities as outlined in this video? I'd say their chances go from definitely to probably. I'm real afraid that if Vegas says no to the A's, they would likely to lose out on MLB altogether just like they did with MLS. And to add insult to that injury, they would still have all those MLB dot tv blackouts that could have been resolved. On the other hand, are TV markets still relevant in the age of cordcutting? I'm surprised no one has factored that in yet.
If Vegas leaves the MLB trying to find the As a new home last minute the MLB would be so pissed they would never consider Vegas again they'd give Oakland another teams or put another team in Canada before Vegas just to spite them
I don’t think it’s a matter of Vegas saying no to the A’s; it’s more of a matter of Fisher not being able to afford it, or Bally’s taking their own sweet time redeveloping the Tropicana site, or both. That, and maybe all parties realizing that a stadium just may not work on that site. I don’t think it would take much for MLB to approve the A’s moving to SLC, and letting Vegas get ready in their own time for an expansion team. Vegas wants MLB, just maybe not the A’s.
MLB needs to add 5-6 of these cities. Charlotte, Nashville, Austin, SLC would make great expansion city, Portand good, and Orlando only if they need to keep the numbers even. Maybe add two ASAP and two more 3 years later and two more 3 years after that.
I’m from Oregon and Portland could not be a worse place for an MLB team. The city is an absolute dump hole. The ballpark would have to be in Hillsboro or some other suburb and the traffic to and from those games during the week would be a huge mess. Putting a shiny new stadium in a crappy area would be a rough look.
They're thinking of building the stadium in Beaverton which isn't the worst but not the best but certainly better than the city of PDX itself. Hillsboro would be an option considering they already have the Hops minor league. Also would be an excuse to tear down that dump Hillsboro Stadium. 😂😂😂
Salt Lake City is about 1000ft lower than Denver. I know the Salt Lake Bees stadium has a pretty deep centerfield fence like the Rockies not sure how much 1000ft helps things like pitchers recovery though.
Everyone forgets about Virginia Beach/Norfolk/Hampton area with regards to metro areas. 37th largest, and a LOT of major league teams are smaller but have teams. The list above includes three areas that are smaller - Raleigh, Hartford, Salt Lake City. There was an NBA franchise there during the ABA years, and there has always been talk of NBA or MLB.
as a native Texan I would love for the central TX area (san antonio/austin) to get an expansion team... but I do not see that happening as that would take away from the astros and rangers market.
There's supposed plans to build a major baseball stadium in downtown San Antonio along with a new Spurs downtown arena to hopefully bring in a major league baseball team along with a rail train system that'll transport people to and from Austin to San Antonio so this can possibly happen. Central Texas is growing rapidly so they should add an MLB team in the area.
@@RisingPHX I know what you're talking but yeah district leaders/council people in SA are so behind times and stubborn. The mayor is all for it so I hope things change eventually.
I think I would agree with you that SLC stands a shot at getting it but I disagree on if not them it being another team in Texas. I don't think the MLB would take a gamble on a team in San Antonio or ATX. The only chance I see is if they put a team in say El Paso or Albuquerque, NM and we don't see any big movements on getting teams there. I see Portland being the secondary option to SLC and it would make travel for the Mariners a little easier, especially if they put the new team in the AL or move Seattle to the NL.
Nashville and Charlotte make the most sense. MLB should stop with trying to create geographical parity in expansion. One of the larger reasons they both are great candidates the because of the lack of teams in the SE. Nobody west outside of Vegas competes with either of those two cities.
I live in Portlabd and as long as they build outside the city, which is where the current proposal is (Beaverton) it wouldn't be bad. The area in question is closer to Lake Oswego which is a bit ritzy. I think an MLB team could do well in Portland and alot of Oregonians have said they'd be down for it.
It'll be SLC and Austin ... Getting more teams into those time zones to generate TV revenue will be the deciding factor the MLB has too many east coast teams and Nashville and Charlotte don't get the MLB new markets because the Braves already do really well taking the TN SC and NC markets even in North Florida the Braves are more popular than the Rays their not gonna make the mistake of challenging the Braves again
The MLB needs to add some sort of salary floor and/or cap before they even think about expansion. Any new team will be at best mid-market by default and be at such a competitive disadvantage to the established big market teams. Existing mid and small market teams already struggle to compete with the current economics and they have decades if not over a century of existence. Unless the new owners are committed to spending long-term it will be a complete disaster.
Austin should get one imo. San antonio has a basketball team so its only fair austin gets baseball. Other than that, the second expansion city should either be nashville or charlotte.
@@RisingPHX I don't count the MLS as a "major league." The elite soccer competition is in Europe. The other north American leagues are the main elite competition of their sports
🎉The upcoming Netflix documentary on what happened to the Montreal Expos will hopefully shed some much needed light on the fact that it wasn't in any way the fault of the true fanbase. In fact, in the early '80's the Expos were outdrawing both the Yankees and Dodgers!!!!!! In a perfect world a new ballpark in the Peel Basin area close to downtown and directly accessing the new REM light rail line would be the best option and preferably with a retractable fixed roof. The main issue in Montreal is that it would need to be privately financed especially in light of the continuing Olympic Stadium fiasco.... All in all, with this in place, along with all the new revenue streams in place which simply didn't exist 20 years ago solid and stable ownership and a competitive on field product, there is simply no reason major league baseball couldn't thrive in Montreal again.
El Paso Chihuahuas stadium seats 14k, just add some seats. The El Paso, Las Cruces, Juarez market would kick legitimate butt. Day games against in El Paso would be a home team advantage. 2 dollar Bud lights and 4 dollar Patron tequila shots !!!!
Don't the Nationals still hold the rights to the Expos? Everyone tells me The Texans can't be the Oilers because they Titans still hold the naming rights so I would think that would be the same here.
The Texans name came from the KC Chiefs ... The Chiefs were originally in Dallas and used the Texans name ... The reason the Houston Texans ain't the Houston Oilers is because the ownership doesn't care about being the Oilers ... The Washington Nationals didn't come up with their name either ... The Boston Red Stockings (Now Braves) were nicknamed the Nationals because they played in the National league while the Boston Americans (Now Red Sox) were called the Americans because they played in the American league interestingly the franchise now known as the Braves sold both the Red stockings name to the now Boston Red Sox and the Nationals name to the now Washington Nationals ... This has all happened before the Washington Nationals would just sell the Expo brand to a new franchise ... And not that it matters but the franchise now known as the Braves were the Boston Bees for a while the only reason I bring this up is because the video said more than one new franchise might like the Bees name
Braves are going to be pissed if Charlotte or Nashville gets a team probably. They just started offering Braves license plates in Tennessee. I think Charlotte would hurt the Braves more because historically Charlotte has been more of a Braves town. Personally I would love either city to get a team just to have another stadium to visit. I'm like 6 hours from Tampa but I have zero desire to see that stadium in person. Too bad they can't add seats to the Charlotte Knights stadium. It has an amazing view of the sky line.
That's why it won't happen ... The Atlanta Falcons and Hawks used to be huge franchises too ... Then they put NFL and NBA teams in Tennesse and the Carolinas and the end result was they traded a huge franchise for three nobody cares about and the sad thing it did nothing to expand the NFL or NBAs markets because the Falcons and Hawks already had those markets ... And really the Rays biggest issue is the Braves I've lived most of my life in South GA and North FL ... North FL has a ton of Braves fans outside of Tampa the Rays almost don't have a fanbase ... At this point the Braves have too many generational fans in TN and NC just like they did in North FL when Tampa got a team ... What I think would be best for the MLB is expanding West
@@scottbussey499 The Rays need to leave FL all together maybe go to Austin or SLC and let the Marlins try to take those TB fans I think FL could support one team but they can't support two not with the Northern transplants in South FL and the large number of Braves fans in North FL ... The NBA shouldn't have two FL teams either the only reason the NFL gets away with more than one is because FL adores football that's why they have three different NCAA football teams that are massive brands
That’s cool and all but Atlanta doesn’t speak for the entire south especially for Nashville. I’m from Nashville and there’s not really a lot of braves plates in Tennessee like that I mean we like them but we rather do our own thing. We are our own large metropolis and have our own brand.
Cities that are not getting expansion teams I wish people would stop brining up. 1. Portland, see downtown 2. Montreal... See exchange rate.... 3. Austin.... see Rangers and Astros... All three of those cities are going to be a no for a number of reasons. Most likely MLB is going to expand in the south ie Nashville and some other city.
The Braves may have to be unhappy because there are more people living in the major metro areas of the Carolinas(not just Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham)than in metro Atlanta. It will be hard for MLB to ignore a potential fan base of that size.
@@fishingthelist4017 Atlanta Metro population doubles Charlotte and Raleigh/Durham put together. Atlanta has the 9th biggest media market in the US. Plus most of the carolinas are braves fans
@@tannerjones6564 when you figure in the million plus in Greenville-Spartanburg, another million plus in Greensboro and Winston-Salem, and almost a million in Columbia, which are all nearby, the population base to draw from gets much larger.
Raleigh is a joke of a city! They can’t support it I live here and they have some growing up to do. I’m from Nashville and we are primed for sports and entertainment and have the money and infrastructure to do so along with the support along with a great ROI.
I agree with the Rays, they cant build there where they are currently and still expect the fans to come from Tampa, move them to Orlando they can get people from both the atlantic and gulf side plus all the tourists that are in that area some will want a break from the theme parks
HARTFORD CT 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂. I’m a Red Sox fan but I was born in CT so I may root for the Hartford team if that happens. I just hope those games would be on NESN or NBC sports Boston if that actually occurs, which I don’t think it will. But I would put a team in Austin over San Antonio or build the stadium between the two cities in either San Marcos or New Braunfels & call it Austin-San Antonio whatever the team will be called. It’s a genius idea when you think about it
No they shouldn’t definitely not Raleigh. Place is small and nothing to do with. I live here in Raleigh and Im from Nashville. Raleigh and Charlotte don’t stand a chance in this lifetime.
I think it's an easy decision if they only add 2 teams: Nashville and either Vegas or Oakland, whichever team doesn't get the A's. I could see a deal worked out with Oakland similar to the NFL and the Cleveland Browns back in the 90s. I think you can rule out any city in Florida because of the attendance issues with the other two teams. I think you can rule out any city of Texas because the other two teams already have the fans. I would rule out Mexico City because of the altitude.
@@DoctorEw220 That’s what the city wants. I think the Braves are the only other team which didn’t change its name when they relocated (Browns > Orioles, Senators 1.0 > Twins, Pilots > Brewers, Senators 2.0 > Rangers, Expos > Nationals).
"...MLB will put together an expansion committee." What a joke. What did the relocation committee do with the Oakland situation, or the blue ribbon committee before that?
It'll be a bad idea to move the Rays to Orlando. The TV market in Orlando is 17, whereas Tampa Bay is 13. Also, the Orlando Magic almost moved to Kansas City in 2011, but in the last minute, the decision was made to build a new arena in Orlando. Compared to other NBA teams, the team don't have much support. At least half the people in Orlando are visitors going in and out of Orlando. If it's not for Disney World, Orlando would not exist. What makes you think Orlando can support a MLB team? Therefore, it makes plenty of since for the Rays to stay in Tampa Bay in either St. Pete or Tampa.
If Disney has anything to do with a potential Orlando franchise, Orlando Groomers would be an appropriate name, and their logo would be Cinderella sporting a mustache. You can bet their stadium would have a TRANS-lucent roof.
Youd have to make N, S, E & W divisions with 4 teams in each. Salt Lake City & Charlotte or Nashville or New Orleans would be the best cities for new stadiums. Montreal & Oakland or Portland are dark horse cities.
There is no way the stadium outside of Portland will get built at the golf course. There is one road in and out and there is one bus line. It would take longer to get to and from the stadium than watching the game.
DG, Montreal was abandoned! And the strike years of 1994 which cancelled the post season (and may I add that the Expos were actually really good that season), And 1995. Then their owner screwed them over BIG TIME, then MLB owned the franchise and really didn’t promote that team and left them with NO BROADCASTING RIGHTS in TV or Radio. If any place deserves a redo it’s Montreal. MLB really screwed that place over!
I never said they should play at that MONSTROSITY! But that situation in Montreal was that owner (Jeff Loria now owner of the Marlins) Screwed the city and Provence of Quebec. His thought probably was to move out of Montreal regardless! Being he was never serious about staying in Montreal and tried to ransom that Market for taxpayer paid new stadium when that market was still paying off on that MONSTROSITY the Expos were stuck playing in. Montreal is a good case in point that the Summer Olympics isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be! Especially financially!!
I agree Sacramento is not a current candidate but your reasoning is pretty flawed. You say, remember when they tried to build a baseball stadium… That was 35 years ago! Sacramento is an entirely different city. Rather, there is no ownership group and/or organization actually pursuing an expansion team. So, that’s probably a more likely reason why they wouldn’t get a team.
How many times do I have to recite this for simpleminded:? The governments of Montreal, Nashville and Charlotte are all pledged to NO PUBLIC MONEY FOR A MLB STADIUM. Zero, nada, diddly squat. Nobody in Raleigh is advocating a MLB franchise, and I live only an hour away. Sacramento, Portland, Indy and Hartford are anarchic slums. Orlando can't get an expansion team because there are already two teams in Florida. SLC is the most viable candidate for a team, but it could obtain one by relocation rather than expansion. Pittsburgh and Cleveland are dying franchises ripe for relo or even merger. The Rays could end up in Orlando if the insane deal with St. Pete collapses. There will be no expansion. Today's voters are in no mood to authorize billions in expansion fee and construction of a stadium. Manfred is delusional.
S.A./Austin makes no sense for MLB. Astros and Rangers already own that market. Charlotte, Nashville, Montreal (a return), SLC are a true expansion of the league.
I like the Nashville option. Florida nope not a baseball state yet?, Oakland no way, damaged goods. Sacramento I like, and Salt Lake city a nice plan B.
