I don’t know why but Taron is underrated for me. I came in with the “It’s gonna be tame” mindset but I was definitely proven wrong. I was absolutely EJECTED on the first camelback and even the end section had ejector airtime. It’s my current #8 out of around 150 creds and I ranked it higher than GhostRider and Mystic Timbers.

Its still on my number 2 spot for european coasters, probable will move to nr 3 this year if Right to happyness is as good as they say. Now i have to to say I've ridden Taron probable the most of all coasters and there have been days it felt pretty sluggisch so if you only have on e day and you get one of those. Yeah it probable would leave you underwhelmed.

100 percent with you on Lightning Rod. I think many people don’t realize how insane it was during its first couple years, I’ve never felt such insane airtime until riding Toro back in 2021. My last couple rides on it were fun, but no where near as intense as my first ones.

I’ve ridden 3 b&m hypers, and apollos chariot was by far the worst. It gave 0 airtime for me and I do not understand how people think it’s the second best in the park. As for grizzly, the only reason I love that ride is because it legitimately feels dangerous to ride it

I’m totally with you on Lightning Rod. As we started making trips outside of Ohio, Dollywood was one our first stops solely for LRod. It was our third RMC after SV (yeah that’s gonna spoil the bunch) and TwiCy. I honestly think I enjoyed TWiCy more. I just didn’t get it. A great ride, but no where near the top of RMCs and is an average RMC for me (which is still a great ride!). Totally disagree on magnum. I didn’t like it much until I learned how to ride. Now it’s moved up to #3 in the park for me behind SV and Maverick. Row 3, put your foot on the hump so that the lap bar hits a slightly raised knees. Move your foot to the side when you leave the station and you should be left with a few inches of room and it will be a seatbelt ride. Bonkers in the ending, especially if running fast where the jerk into the triangles can get very close to -2g, which is about the limit (most RMCs peak at -1.4 to -1.5 and only the raptors in the front or back actually hit -2).
@giancarlofelicianocastaned9316
Did you ride it before the retrack?
@mikewalker4950
@mikewalker4950 Год назад
@@giancarlofelicianocastaned9316 Right after. It may have been better before, but I'm not necessarily one who needs an extremely fast paced layout and extreme airtime, so while maybe better, I'm guessing my option wouldn't change much.... Afterall, Diamondback is an elite ride for me and above almost everything other than Steel Vengeance and I305.

As a sports fan, I loved that you used the analogy of playing basketball with your organs, but you can use it with any sport in general (being tackled in football, getting hit by a puck in hockey, and a pitch or baseball bat in baseball), and that’s true, but if you know me well I love getting beaten to a pulp and Grizzly (KD) does just enough for me that it isn’t jarring to me, which is why I love it so much imo.

I had the same opinion of Taron the first time I rode it. But the time I came back, it was flying, I had so much fun on it. I've ridden coasters such as Geforce, Kondaa, and Kärnan, I still like Taron better than all of them. Taron is my n2 coaster overall, I only prefer Taiga, but that might change because there is no coaster I've ridden that puts a smile on my face as often as Taron does.

I am a Magnum lover but I do agree it's an aquired taste like hard liquor is. I personally like it because it has tons of character just like a wood coaster does and those ending air time hills are insane, I believe they pull almost -2gs which is some of the strongest airtime you can possibly find on any coaster
@brianwolf399

Especially if you ride in the magic seat and you are right it is an aquired taste but those triangle hills have a lot of character that makes this coaster underrated at Cedar Point with all the other coasters that they have

I use the comfort collars as handles to lessen the hang and keep from being thrown back down in the seat so hard on the bottom swings. Grizzly got bad late 2018 but of course many peoples' memories are from far earlier. I always come off my seat most hills of Apollo in the back row. Night rides make the legend though. It's not the best B&M hyper, but it is one.

With the exception of Medusa, which I think is slightly underrated; Grizzly, which is rough but fun; Taron, which for me is elite among the world’s coasters; Apollo’s, which I hear no one but the GTAs calling an elite hyper; and Lightning Rod, which, when I rode it, was staggeringly good, I can agree with the other five. I really loved Colossos, but when I hear people compare it with (let alone prefer it to) El Toro, I am mystified.

Cool video, I also don’t consider many coaster overrated, but here are my takes anyway 10. Still haven’t done one of these lol 9. Haven’t done 8. It’s funny because I actually thought Lightning Run was overrated lol. Maybe I just rode Storm chasing when it was running hella fast, because that wasn’t “average RMC Airtime” imo. It tried to kill me, easy top 10 coaster. 7. Haven’t Done 6. Haven’t Done 5. Haven’t Done 4. Haven’t Done 3. Haven’t done 2. This is my #2 overall out of 154 so yep this stings, although you make a good point, I haven’t done it since 2019 so it could be slower now 1. Honestly this one hurts the most. Easily an elite coaster, and not just for the ending hills, the whole ride was just fun as hell. #3 in the park for me and it’s pretty close to Maverick. I’m a huge arrow simp tho so prolly biased

I live pretty close to Dollywood and Kentucky Kingdom. Storm Chaser on a hot summer day gave me the craziest rides I have ever had on a roller coaster. Full train, 90+ degrees, and I have never had to quit a ride before because my thighs actually were in pain. With my hands up it actually had so much airtime it pulled my shirt off to where my whole torso was out lol. Lightning Rod is hit or miss. Some days it rides like the most intense ride on the planet tearing through those hills and turns, and other days it has slowed down considerably. I have no clue what changes this pattern, but some days the launch feels different. I’ve had fast rides on cold days, wet days, and hot days. I really have no clue what causes it.

I honestly gotta go with pantheon. I went on Easter Sunday and look the airtime hill on the launch is amazing and same with the side bank before the brake but the top hat didn’t fling me over at all and the outer bank gave me mild floater and the zero g stall wasn’t as whippy as Velocicoaster. I like pantheon but I expected it to be more aggressive

I was kinda disappointed with Apollo too but I was fortunate enough to get some rides later in the day, and it redeemed itself. The hill profiling isn’t great on a few elements since you get nowhere near as much airtime as the newer hypers, but it still has an awesome layout and setting. The highlight for me was the return trip and the 2nd cammelback with the twisted drop, that had some insane airtime I didn’t expect. I am a B&M hyper fanboy so my opinion might be a little inflated hahah. But I’d trade Goliath at SFMM for Apollo in a heartbeat.

I will agree, some enthusiasts hype up Storm Chaser way too much. It isn't a top 5 or 10 RMC. It simply doesn't have the length and speed. However, I will say no coaster I've ridden has had as much variance in ride experience as Storm Chaser from an empty train to a full train. A warmed up SC with a full train transforms strong airtime into violent, especially near the last 3rd. You can tell if it is running fast or slow by how it hits the breaks. With a zen ride the train will struggle to get over the last hill into the breaks. However, running with full trains and it will fling you forward violently as you slam into the breaks.

Wow! I am so glad that you put Lightning Rod on this list, and so high on the list, too. I definitely believe that it's overrated. The first 15 to 20 times I rode it, I thought it was amazing and a top-notch coaster. But the more I rode it, which as of December of 2022 has been about 50 or so times, it really started to lose its flare with me. In fact, as unpopular as this is for me to say, I actually like Wild Eagle and Tennessee Tornado better than Lighting Rod (with Tennessee Tornado being my overall favorite and most ridden coaster at Dollywood). I could ride Tennessee Tornado all day, and with good reason. Yeah, it may be short in duration, but what it does in that duration always leaves me completely satisfied. I especially appreciate it's deceptive level of ongoing intensity, which I think Lightning Rod lacks. Lightning Rod does have a high level of aggression (which I love in a coaster) throughout much of it's layout -- but that doesn't make up for the other aspects of its ride experience that leave me feeling like it's just a good, fun coaster but not a top-notch, phenomenal one. I do know that after riding Iron Gwazi back in the beginning of December, Lightning Rod felt like child's play after that. The quad down on Lightning Rod is fun enough, but it's definitely not one of my favorite elements on the ride. I prefer the wave turn, the twist and shouts, the "ejector bump" just before the final over-banked turnaround -- and even the final over-banked turnaround over the quad down. Ultimately, I believe Thunderhead is more aggressive than Lightning Rod, and it provides an ongoing out of control feeling throughout the entirety of its layout that isn't happening throughout the entirety of Lightning Rod's layout. There are many coasters (other than Wild Eagle and Tennessee Tornado of course) that I like much, much more than Lightning Rod; some of which are Kumba, Afterburn, Fury 325, Iron Gwazi, Velocicoaster -- just to name a few. So, I agree with you wholeheartedly that Lightning Rod is overrated -- even somewhat highly overrated at that.

Being a UK enthusiast with a measley 60 coasters under my belt, the only coaster I've ever found to be overrated, personally, is Nemesis. A lot of people have it as number 1 in the UK, where I have it more top 14. It's a good coaster. But that's it, it's just good, not elite imo. However, I also have Saw: The Ride as top 2 UK so my opinion clearly isn't valid lmao. I would love to be proven wrong when Nemesis reopens in 2024 (ooh), but my current memories of it are just decent.

Of the rides on this list, the ones I've ridden are a comfort-collar-less Sky Rocket II (Phobia Phear Coaster), and Superman: The Ride. I thought Phobia was a great ride for what it was; certainly wouldn't rank it as one of the best coasters on earth, but if you think of it as a modern counterpart to the Vekoma Boomerang or the Schwarzkopf shuttle loop, it's fantastic in that role. I like hangtimey rides, and the whip on some of the twists is nice. I can imagine that the comfort collars would make it considerably less comfortable, though. Superman is a ride I love and I think it's actually gone from overrated to underrated status among enthusiasts. The Golden Ticket Awards rating it as the world's best steel coaster were, of course, the product of an earlier age, when RMC wasn't even a coaster manufacturer and a lot of today's rides didn't exist. And these days, the Golden Ticket system still overrates it just because it's a coaster very many people have ridden--but you'll notice that Vote Coasters' Condorcet-based system ranks it way down below a lot of modern rides, including Wicked Cyclone at the same park. (That ordering is correct--Wicked Cyclone is better.) But I think enthusiasts knock Superman too much for the current restraints, which I don't mind at all. It's still a brilliant layout. My vote for most overrated current coaster that I've experienced is a sad one: it's Boulder Dash. Yes, it's an utterly unique, bucket-list experience, and the layout is classic. For what it has been and what it can be, I don't WANT to rate it down. But as of 2022 (when I rode it last), it's just gotten too rough to be considered one of the world's best wooden coasters, which many enthusiasts still regard it as. It needs a major retrack. It actually got one a few years ago but it didn't seem to help. On that visit to Compounce, I found myself actually enjoying Phobia Phear Coaster more than I did Boulder Dash, and that's just not right, shouldn't be the case.

Taron is one of my favourite coasters, however it really depends on the time you ride it. Taron needs to warm up. If you ride it early in the morning or the ride suffered a lot of downtime that day you'll have a much tamer ride. Sometimes Taron lets me down, but if the ride is warmed up there is not a lot that can beat it for me.

I find Taron quite tame and underwhelming. I think the reason I found it underwhelming is because everything else at the park is so much better than what you expect, all of the way from black mamba to the mine train, everything is just so much more intense and forceful than it initially looks. Taron looks forceful so after everything else you expect it to be insane and out of control… but it’s just as good as looks rather than much better than it looks off rise.

1. Sky Rocket IIs are pretty consistently sh*t on so i just cant see how those can be overrated on tbh. 2. So glad to see someone calling Magnum overrated. I swear if that ride wasn’t at Cedar Point then it would be considered an average coaster

Of the ones I've ridden: I'd disagree on the Skyrocket II (although I've only ridden Tempesto). Actually thought it was underrated and people were complaining a bit too much. Disagree on Apollo's Chariot, although I'm beginning to think I just got it on a really good day. That was a very hot summer when I rode it, but man that thing was only a little worse than Mako IMO. Hard agree on Lightning Rod. Rode it in 2019, so the retrack hadn't happened yet but the launch had still been dialed back, and going into the ride expecting ejector airtime everywhere I was honestly disappointed in getting in between no air time to mild floater from the back row up until the quad down was already finishing at which point the ejector finally arrived. It just didn't hit like, say, Twisted Timbers had. The one I'd add to the list would be Afterburn, which was an invert I went into with good expectations on the layout and just felt most of it was kind of slow and forceless. Maybe riding Fury first skewed my expectations for the day, but yeah, I just didn't feel it was anything special.

OH MY GOD, Magnum, yes, thank you! I feel like I’m going crazy when I read all the praise this ride gets. I simply cannot process that people think Magnum is the best ride at Cedar Point-doubly so when people claim it has the best airtime in the park when Steel Vengeance is literally in the background. Frankly, I wish they’d axe Magnum and put in a big Gravity Group woodie or something along the coastline-though I’m probably in the minority for thinking that.

I've only been on about half of these, but of that half the only one I really disagree with your assessment of is Storm Chaser. I rode on a hot August day in 2021 and by mid-day the trick track double up and double down at the end were punishing. I actually don't care for that style of airtime (extremely brief, extremely strong ejector pops) with any restraint that isn't buzzbars (looking at you Phoenix - never change), but it is crazy strong if Storm Chaser is running normally. Because of my personal taste (favoring more sustained airtime) I might agree with the verdict that it's overrated, but definitely not because the airtime isn't strong enough.

I knew Cedar Point would be at the #1 spot but I thought for sure it would be Steel Vengeance! I've been riding Magnum since 1989 and I said it was overrated when it was brand new. However, these days it's my favorite thing to do at CP. While I do think Steel Vengeance and Maverick are better rides, you can get like 5-10 rides on Magnum in the same time it takes to get one ride on the others. Also, it does have the strongest airtime at Cedar Point by far! Personally I like an aggressive ride. If a ride doesn't hurl me out of the seat and into the restraints I feel it was a weak ride. Which is why I thought for sure Steel Vengeance was going to top this list. It has the most airtime of any ride that you never once leave your seat. That giant 75lb lap bar makes sure you cannot possibly leave your seat and be thrown into the restraints. Even on the outer bank. Even if I get lots of wiggle room at dispatch. In fact, I can't say I have ever been stapled on SteVe. I rode Steel Vengeance 9 times last year. The only hill that had any ejector was the first half of the double up into the mid course. And it only had ejector in the back row on hot days. Most of those 9 rides had ZERO ejector airtime. Making Steel Vengeance the indisputable champion of overrated coasters in my book!

Just watched Mr Obi Wan Canobie's top 50 and Lrod at number 1 just blows my mind in so many ways. It's not even good enough to crack mid tier RMC for me. Taron is still elite in my opinion. I think if you went into it expecting great forces then you were duped, because that's not at all what the ride is about. I'd argue Velocicoaster or even Pantheon don't pull great forces either, but they're just great overall rides.

I personally can't relate to people who find Lighting Rod to be overrated. Same for Storm Chaser. I find this especially amusing after watching Canobie Coaster's recent top 100. But then I can't understand why some people love licorice nor can I wrap my head around people being grossed out by cilantro. But that's how it is so oh well. Ok I can agree and disagree on a few of these - Skyrocket II models suck I agree! Storm Chaser isn't necessarily the best RMC but for a small RMC at a lackluster park with a troubled history it is fantastic. Apollo's Chariot was enjoyable for me and I've never heard it called elite (maybe I'm talking to the wrong people) however, I still prefer it to Raging Bull at Six Flags Great America. As for Magnum XL 200 it's my #3 out of 166 and I totally disagree about it being overrated. I guess it doesn't impress everyone but it literally has everything that I love in a coaster and it's very unique. The setting out by the lake is beautiful and the first few hills give a floating sensation because they aren't as steep as B&M hyper hills for example. You go flying through the turnaround with good positive Gs and the return trip is airtime hill after airtime hill. Love all 3 tunnels and to me few rides rival this one. I will admit it's not the most comfortable ride in a wheel seat and if you marathon it like I do yes you will get a headache but the same is true of plenty of other popular Arrow coasters. In my experience X2 at Magic Mountain gave me a headache after 1 ride while it takes 3-4 to get one on Magnum XL 200. I still enjoy both but I personally find X2 to be overrated and Magnum XL 200 to be the greatest Arrow coaster I've ridden. I personally think that X2 is overrated because it's a rough ride, b&m floorless are often overrated to me because they always bang my head with the exception of Kraken at Sea World which is what every floorless should be and they aren't. El Toro was ungodly rough in Aug 2022 and after 3 rides in 3 different seats I gave up. Also a note I'd like to throw in is that different people have tolerance for different types of roughness. For example Arrows have a different type of roughness than a wooden coaster by the Dinn Corporation. I personally know how to ride arrow loopers and avoid most headbanging and the roughness on Magnum doesn't bother me much. Mine train roughness/jerking is also fine. I grew up riding the beast before re-track so rough wooden coasters that beat you side to side (against the side of the seat) are also fine....I am not as tolerant of B&M headbanging on floorless because the restraints are very bulky and hard (if there's a way to avoid it I haven't found it yet). X2 flipping you and hitting your head repeatedly on the seat back isn't exactly fun and even the rotations are not smooth as with a free spin coaster. El Toro was the worst roughness I've ever experienced (people complain about the boss, beast, mean streak and those were smooth compared to El Toro) El Toro has uncomfortable lap bars and you feel like you're hitting the concerte every time you hit the bottom of the drops. Literally the only coaster experience to make me want to see a chiropractor. As I said before, other people may find other types of roughness less tolerable than I do and I'm thinking that's why certain coasters do or don't bother certain people.
@MattMcIrvin
@MattMcIrvin Год назад
The observation about different types of roughness is spot on. I think I'm way more tolerant of janky Arrow-style transitions than the average rider, maybe just because I'm taller than average and OTSR headbanging consequently affects me less, but major up-and-down jackhammering really bothers me.

I totally respect your opinions, but a few coaster on this list are some of my favorites. Lightning Rod is my #1, Apollo's Chariot is my #5, and Grizzly is one of my favorite wooden coasters. I enjoyed Apollo’s Chariot but it’s my least favorite B&M hyper and I do also think it’s kinda overrated. I rode it 3 times (front, back, and middle) and I do think the back had better airtime but front was the overall better experience due to the speed. But I don’t think it’s a great ride even though it’s still enjoyable and I feel silly about complaining about a 200 ft hyper coaster.

I dunno, Dash...I feel like it you go into Taron (you meaning anybody) expecting a gigantic thrill ride that'll leave you speechless like X2, it's not the ride's fault. Taron was designed to be rideable by the entire family, just like most rides at Phantasialand (F.L.Y is questionable for family but still). I think calling Taron overrated is a very silly thing considering it's an Intamin that doesn't even invert once. If Taron went upside down and was that boring, then I could see it. But personally I think Taron fits the bill perfectly. I think a lot of the Taron fans you spoke of rank the ride so highly because they respect the ride for what it delivers on, not what it doesn't deliver on. Great list though. Those Grizzly clones are AWFUL. Also, it's insane you have LRod at #2 most overrated when Canobie Coaster just put LRod at #1 on his top coasters in the world. I have NEVER heard of a roller coaster dividing riders like LRod, it's actually insane.

@@CoasterDash As a coaster lover, I NEVER base my expectations on what Thoosies say. Ever. I trust your opinions because you try very hard not to be biased, but others...meh. Thoosies tend to over-exaggerate just about everything and in general I just find Thoosies to be kinda of annoying (apart from you and a few other RU-vidrs) and also unreliable since one person is going to favor one type of ride as opposed to another. For example, someone who loves speed and aggression will love I305's snappy turns and might rank it a bit higher than, say, Fury 325 which does everything well. But then how many Thoosies would call them a slanderer for that? If someone bases their expectations off of someone else's opinions, I say that's kinda on them. (Also I'm just naturally a lot less harsh/critical of roller coasters because I love them so much, a ride has to be truly an awful experience for me to dock points away from it, really, so I might just be biased).

“I’m going to have high expectations” is you literally putting on your judgemental hat. If you agree that people have different expectations on what constitutes a better ride, then don’t base their ranking on your expectation of what’s better. Some prefer overall experience over intensity and air time: I for one love Taron for its overall experience of snaking through a well-themed medieval village. Does that mean I’ve poorer taste?
