This video is my Top 10 recommendations for using PPG Automotive Paint. I will list them all here in the description, you can copy & paste or print it and put it in your paint room for future reference. In no particular order here they are.
1: Add extra thinners to the basecoat, this will help dieback. Here in Australia, they recommend 15% thinners, I recommend you double it and use 30%. If you can get some T492 this will also help, but for now, it's not available in Australia.
2: Add extra thinners to the clear also, LVC-136 & D8173 clears are very thick and gluggy, I find adding an extra 30% of the reducer works excellent, so if they ask for 100g of thinners I will pit 130g So it's 3:1:1+30% of the 1.
3: Preclean panels with microfibre cloths, I find this gives a deep clean and also stops a funny fisheye reaction that can occur on humid days.
4: I find the Wet-On-Wet (Sealer) primer can profile if you don't prime the full panel, this results in an uneven surface for the basecoat. So generally as a rule of thumb, I do entire panels or avoid using it where possible.
5: Sometimes the suggested 'G Shade' primer is way off, if your gut says to use a different shade, trust it.
6: Create a colour library, the Spectro is hit and miss, more miss than hit!! Although I hear it's not as bad in the USA, possibly a regional issue. Colour chips before Spectro!!
7: For whatever reason, the reps don't recommend using a wet bed for metallic colour blends, I highly recommend using some T490 mixed with 20% thinner on light metallic blend panels.
8: Dieback is bad with PPG, a bake between base & clear can help, I believe T492 would help also, but as I say, it's not available in Australia.
9: Be sure to strain your colour, it's very clumpy & lumpy.
10: Be sure to read your Tech Data Sheets, there's lots of helpful info in there, you never know, you might learn a thing or two. They should all be on the paint computer.
Bonus Tip 1: You don't need to use SATA guns for your basecoat.
Bonus Tip 2: Check your viscosity with a viscosity cup. Having the right viscosity is important.
