I watched it without knowing anything about dune going into it, and my mind is blown. I can’t stop thinking about this universe, It’s like a glimpse into one of our possible futures.

This movie is a much needed breath of Fresh Air in Modern Cinema.

His vision with Jamis killing him was also sybolizing that you kill yourself when you killed another man. Being the first person Paul killed. Jamis killed the boy Paul used to be or rather Paul killed himself and now is reborn as Femen

The things I can’t stop thinking about: The creepy ominous vibe of Baron Harkkonen, the intensity of the “voice”, the intriguing sound of the Sardaukar language/chant. A visual and auditory treat this movie was. This is poised to be the sci-fi series of the decade in my opinion. Star Wars? What’s that?

When Paul kills Jamis, notice that Jamis is in the middle of switching his knife to his other hand behind his back. In the novel, Chani warns Paul that Jamis is know to pull this exact move.

Possessing the alternate vision of Jamis as his mentor, must have made killing Jamis that much more heavier for Paul.

There were scenes that were filmed but didn't make the cut. I hope there's a director's cut for home video release with those scenes added in because it was the fastest two and a half hours for this movie.

The Harkkonen’s cruelty is their undoing. Dune’s cruel ecology combined with Harkkonen oppression makes it even more harsh place than Salusa Secundus, which is why the Fremen become the ideal warriors to defeat the Sardukar.

I love how in the end, when Jamis challenges Jessica to a fight, she starts taking her pack off so they can duel. She would have won easily because she knows the Bene Gesserit fighting style (weirding way). But ofc she gets stopped by Stilgar because he knows her status

One detail was missing from this list: the fact that lasers are also banned in the Dune Universe. The reaction between a laser and a shield is catastrophic, and that´s why humans have returned to the old ways of combat, using knives and swords instead.

There are 3 kinds of ornithopters shown in the movie, the Atreides make (more angular with 4 wings), the Harkonnen make (bulkier with 6 wings), and the... fremen (?) make 2 seater (round, more sleek, 4 wings)... When I saw the ornithopters in the theater on day one I got teary eyed, so much of the essence of the book was captured within them.

If you watch a movie and the next day you spend time to look into lore, things you missed and forums..that means it had a impact :D

Two fun details that were missed: 1. Just before Duncan's final fight you can see him pick up a beetle. This same beetle appears in Paul's vision of Duncan's death at the start of the movie. 2. The book hints at different models of ornithopters with different carry capacities. In the book the Duke says his thopter can carry an extra man when they go to rescue the spice miners from the crawler. In the movie we see at least 3 different models of ornithopter, each with a different number of wings. The Duke's has 4 on each side for 8 total. The one Paul flies near the end has 2 on each side for 4 total. And the one that Duncan uses to rescue Paul and Jessica after the attack has 3 wings on each side for 6 total.

Very rarely do I give a movie an "EPIC" title but film is just that. I glad the WB gave it a good start and may part 2 continue this way

A little perplexed you omitted the symbolism of the bull. The bull being the namesake of House Harkonnen (derived from the Finnish name Härkönen, meaning bull, or bullish). Thus in a way, even the old duke was killed by the feud between the two houses. As a tradition laid by Pauls father, the bulls head and the portait of the old duke were set on opposite walls of the dining hall, once again representing the opposition of houses Atreides and Harkonnen.

"It is a maker..." This is a great example of a scene meant for those who read the book. Mapes asks Jessica if she knows the significance of the chrysknife. Jessica actually has no idea, but confidently begins to answer. She is about to say "it is a maker of death". You see her about to say the rest when Mapes reacts. Mapes thinks that Jessica knows that the sandworms and the makers are the same thing.

I loved that part about Paul's visions of Jamis being his mentor and friend. I feel like it makes it more understandable for the audience to ger why it was hard to kill Jamis. Because he basically had an existing friendship with him. I do feel like Paul's visions of Jamis killing him were more of a message that you are killing yourself, like the voice in the vision said, than a possible future. Because also(spoiler alert for part 2) in the book he has to accept the responsibility of taking care of Jamis' family. So in essence he's killing the person he's going to be.

Gurney: “I am Inevitable.” Paul: “What?” Gurney: “What?” Paul: 🤨

Paul tells Duncan he stinks when meeting him after the scout mission. It's a reference to the book saying the fremen stink when being inside because of their stillsuits

I literally thought Baron gave out major Marlon Brando/Colonel Kurtz vibes in the film when I watched it with a few friends. Superb acting from Stellan Skarsgard.

"A Star Wars for adults." - Denis Villeneuve

Hans Zimmer got us again with the beautiful soundtrack, can't wait to hear the rest of it that he's making!

Another little detail in Dune Part 1: The scene with the date palms on Arrakis. In the book, the palms are introduced through Lady Jessica and Dr. Yueh. Basically Yueh is observing the reaction of the population of Arakeen to the trees and explains to Jessica that the people think "these are 100 of us" when they look at the plants with hate and envy. And no one EVER proposes to remove the palms to save water. I can't remember a single line in the book where any of the Atreides show sympathy or empathy towards the commom folk of Arakeen in regards to these palms. But not only that! Inside of the palace there is even a whole room full with exotic plants and even a small water fountian which need a massive amount of water per day. And of course everyone thinks that it is absolutely ok to keep the room and waste the water. That was honestly one of the things that bothered me the most in the first part of the book. In the film however, they took creative liberties to improve these scenes. First, they erased the room. Second they give Paul the opportunity to show his capability for empathy and willingness to do things for others without personally gaining anything from it. Simply by introducing the palms as holy items and letting Paul propose to remove them for the sake of saving water. This might seem like an insignificant change but it actually made me like movie-Paul a lot more then book-Paul. And the only reason is that he shows this little bit of compassion towards random people who are basically irrelevant in the story.

The Dr isn't just betraying everything he represents. The Harkkonen’s have developed a way to circumvent Imperial conditioning, something believed to be impossible. The Dr should be literally incapable of betraying house Atreides.

I was remember watching the 1984 version over and over again as a kid, I've read all the books, seen the miniseries also which I thought was pretty cool... but out of everything this one is by far the best. I was super worried going to see it yesterday that it might not meet the ultra high standard I was holding it to...it was fucking outstanding. Blew me away.

I always thought Leto kept the bull's head around as a sort of memento mori, a reminder that he should never grow overconfident and give in to recklesness like his father did. The irony is that that is exactly what ends up happening - Arrakis is Leto's bull. He knew he was walking into a trap, but because of his overconfidence, he thought he could overcome it anyway, much like his father willingly endangered himself in the arena because he believed he would win. The final look Leto gives the severed head in the dining hall is him realizing that despite how much he tried to be different, he is about to die for the exact same reason as his father.

There was a lot of interesting symbolism, when Leto placed his seal on the contract to take dune you can see Jessica wince and it's because she knows he has just sealed his fate. The bull symbol represents his doom just as his father Pauls grandfather died to a bull, Leto died to a bull named the Barron

I was kinda sad that Jamis died, seeing him as his potential mentor puts things into perspective for the timeline of our realities.

Dr. Yueh speaks Mandarin with Paul, was impressed by Tim's pronunciation

Paul's visions aren't necessarily tangential time lines. He says early on in his interview with the Reverend Mother that his visions simply don't always play out verbatim to what he sees.

Im a fan fo Villeneuves work! Loved Sicario, Arrival and was flattened by the sheer beauty and atmosphere of Dune. I have to say I feel like Blade Runner 2049 is still Villeneuves greatest Sci Fi movie to this date.

Just one thing regarding the last point: Paul was a powerful prescient who did not only see the future, he effectively saw all possible futures diverging from the present moment and circumstances, including the results of his own actions. It was like taking hold of a very long lever, and by moving it a little bit, the other end moved across the universe. It was repeatedly stated in the books that a seer of Paul Muad'dib's abilities did not just see the future but created it. This became a major theme later on, with humanity first being saved, then escaping the prescient hold of such individuals.

About the bull trophy… it still has Paul’s grandfather’s blood on the horns.

After the Lord Of The Rings, this is one of the rare examples of cinema which gives justice to it's novel.

I mean, hopefully no one missed the blue eyes, that's a defining trait of Dune lol.

First of all, this movie tripped me the f** out. I like going into movies not knowing anything about them, like nothing. I got the full experience. Had never heard of Dune before. I thought one of the more interesting aspects was the "dark voice" and hidden sign language communication used. It added a different level of anticipation and intensity to scenes that were already suspenseful. I thought it was really brilliant, and I'd like to know more.

The Atreides Anthem being primarily of bagpipes is a reference to Caladan having an origin of Celtic settlers. House Atreides is more Greek, but clearly has been with Caladan culture long enough to adopt it.

The atmosphere, not other book or movie has such incredible atmosphere. That's why I can't get enough of it, it is so unique.

I liked the detail in Villeneuve's Dune that Yueh's wife may be the spider thing the Baron keeps as a pet, as we never find out her fate in the books.

I like to think that the alternate timeline is what would have happened if the Atreides had been able to make deals with the Fremen the way Duke Leto wanted with it being done in a peaceful way, instead of the desperation that Paul and Jessica face after the Duke's dead and thus needing to prove themselves due to having nothing else to offer

Dune was freaking EPIC!!! I cannot wait for Part 2!

The jamis scene killed me because of the vision he had that showed Jamis becomin Paul’s mentor. When I heard them say his name jamis I knew right then and there he wasn’t gonna last

Perhaps the best movie experience I've ever had. Dune was amazing, although perhaps a bit rushed and shallow in certain details, but that is to be expected when going the movie route instead of the high budget TV series route like Game of Thrones. This is the first movie I have ever wanted to go see again in the theaters. I have HBO, which has Dune, but I will go back to the theaters to see it again instead of watching it at home. The sound track, the cinematography, everything was fantastically overwhelming and drew you in the entire time.

I was expecting WatchMojo to mention all the moments in which the desert mouse is shown. It's in the hologram and in several scenes in the desert and they even made sure to make a visual mouse shape on the second moon when Leto and Gurney are talking about the large moon. Knowing the book, it's definitely foreshadowing.

Another thing: The Selusan Bull is an incredibly minor reference in the original novel however in non-canon extended media like the Dune video games it is the emblem of House Harkonnen (In the books it's a blue Griffon). The Bull despite killing the Old Duke was itself slayed by the Old Duke in his dying breath, as such the iconography of the Bull during the film's dining room scene where the Leto in his dying breath makes his final stand is essentially referencing the Bull = Harkonnens, they've killed him but in his final death throw attempts to kill them.

what is soooooo gratifying is that this movie shows there are still PROPERLY creative people in hollywood, to do Frank Herbert justice is an opus. whoever the bigwig in hollywood who green lit this project and didn't turn it into starwars 2.0 was ... WE LOVE YOU SO MUCH you have literally made the world a better place x

Oh Paul's little sister is a gangster in the books.

No mention of how interstellar space actually works or what the "Navigators" are, and how spice is actually used by them. The fact that Paul will be able to bend spacetime is talked about early, but nothing about how the Navigators do it already, how those giant ships take all the other ships from planet to planet. I hope there is some mention in 'the messiah'.

The biggest missing thing for me, was the whole scheme played by the Harkonnens & Yueh to make Leto and Gurney feel the treason coming and concluding "Jessica is the traitor" while allowing Yueh to carry out his treason. You only get a glimpse of that when Leto asks Jessica "Promise me you'll take care of Paul; whatever happens", before getting...you know... stingy stingy.

I read this book when I was in my teens. I'm now 69. Hadn't realised until I watched this movie version - way better than the previous attempt btw - how much it has influenced my life. "Fear is the little death..." But one of my favorite quotes was badly mangled. When Paul says he's not in the mood for fighting, the answer is: "What has mood to do with it? ... Mood's a thing for cattle or making love or playing the baliset. It's not for fighting."

Everyone said this movie was just ok , I enjoyed it quite a bit , was completely captured by the atmosphere of the film and was a hell of a lot more easy to understand than the 1984 version lol

#9 is explained in the banquet scene, one of the many reasons they should have kept that in the movie. #8 The dropping of the Mentat story line is going to hurt the whole movie. In dropping this they also drop that Paul was raised with the mentat training and that is a major factor on why he is such a threat. #7 More important: WHY DID HIS FACIAL HAIR CHANGE THROUGHOUT THE MOVIE?? This is unheard of. #6 Dropping the Suk explanation really hurts the emersion as to why Yuri doing this is SUCH a big deal. #5 Surprisingly the movie took the time to explain this buuuut not a ton of other actually important plot points. #3 Again: the damage of dropping the Mentat storyline will be extensive. #1-2 Wait.. That's your big thing?? See my notes below: Ok Visually stunning, very impressed. I think it did a decent job at trying to explain the story without holding the readers' hand. A fine line to walk. Storywise I have a few issues: 1. The Sardaukar attacked in their uniforms. In the book they were disguised. Having them out in the open is going to be interesting to see what happens because the evidence that the Emperor was behind the attack (or supporting) is right out in the open. 2. The camera angle at the signing when the Duke looked at the Herald of the Change was weird. Almost on purpose maybe? but I can't figure out why. 3. Wow, we just skipped over the feud between Thufir Hawat and Lady Jessica huh? AND we really cut out the tearing apart the place looking for the traitor to: oh um he was in the wall. oops. 4. Where is Gurney's baliset??? Where? "Play us a song Gurney" really doesn't make since to the new people if Gurney doesn't have his instrument or at least sings at some point. 5. Duncan's ever fading facial hair. Dude gets a handful of scenes and different facial hair in every single one. Major character....big change with no explanation. 6. Shadout Mapes They did our girl diiiiirty. She was already a background character but damn. 7. They cut the dinner scene!! What? What? this was huge. The dinner scene was why the Fremen trusted the water fat outworlders. Also huge politics. 8. We spent a lot of time learning about how to walk in the desert to not ... do ... that. 9. Their water discipline sucked. So many faces and heads exposed. 10. Fighting in still suits? really? Those things are expensive. 11. We're just going to skip over why we don't have thinking machines and why that means we test Paul? okay. 12. The kneecapped Jessica! Holy shit. Yeah she powers up here soon but she was not the weak mewing creature they showed in part 1. She was a /FORCE/ 13. We're skipping over that Paul also received Mentat training since birth too.

This is why this property should've been adapted to a series. It'd give Villenueve a wider canvas to expand on all these plot elements and characters. Dune is a massive universe and it's very much deserving of a series on a platform like Netflix or HBO. They'd also have the ability to show some of Dune's more gritty and violent aspects, not watered down by Hollywood.

The movie was a pure bliss, I felt like I was in a completely different world, after Avatar; Dune gave me this same feel.

Great vid,…..also the reason they kept showing that kangaroo mouse is because it’s name is muadib,…when stilgar asked Paul what name he wanted to be known as in the tribe,paul described that animal ,hence forward he became Paul muadib.

Top 10 things literally nobody missed in Dune.

The Butlerian Jihad was a rebellion by humans against their AI overlords. Humanity was not over-dependent upon AI/thinking machines, it was, in part, RULED by them (according to the later novels by Herbert's son). Hence the commandment in the Orange Catholic Bible: Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind.

The way they came off the ship with the bagpipes leading them had the be the dopest thing I’ve seen in a film for a while, all in all this movie was fucking phenomenal

I had no idea what Dune was about. I'm completely fascinated with the movie. I'm sad that Part 2 was only just approved recently. I hope we get a lot more than a trilogy.

I was only 150 or so pages into the book when I saw the movie, just finished it and it was great to have more of a visual of the characters and settings as I continued with the story.

Ever since the remake got announced years ago I slowly started studying Dune and all the Dune books and lore. Man my nights have been filled with so many sci fi marathon audiobooks I have the trippiest dreams and thoughts. I love hearing about the lore of it all from certain RU-vid channels and just letting Dune audiobook plays while I sleep haha. Dreams are messages from the deep.

"Duncan can always come back as a Ghola" way to spoil the Dune sequels

The Fremen in the front of the group, perched on the rocks, looking over at Paul and Jessica heading down a dune after their crash - is Jason Momoa (after Duncan's death). You can tell by the scars on his forehead and eyebrow. Don't know if this will be relevant to the story or its just for good trivia but that's definitely him.

Man that tent scene is powerful.

During Jamis' funeral, like the others, Paul says "I was a friend of Jamis. Jamis taught me that when you kill, you pay for it. I wish I've known Jamis better." They should've included this scene to end this first part of the movie. It would've explained a lot about the dreams referring to Jamis as a friend and a mentor.

I totally got the Brando-apocalypse homage while watching this.

I read the book before watching the movie and man the book is just beyond amazing!!! The movie is good but is also disappointing because it leaves behind a lot of details that make the story more engaging. I think Dune should be made into a series like Game of Thrones and it would be just beyond amazing

I’ve not read any of the books prior to watching this movie and I really liked the way this universe takes place in the future. Nothing fancy with AI computers or strobing lights. The way their ships are designed as well as their homes is just a more advanced modern contemporary build if that makes sense. I also liked how all soldiers were fighting close combat and preferred close combat rather than using any sort of future weapon blasters or something of that kind. The use of sign language was pretty cool.

When I first watched this movie, I watched it a second time after it ended. Then the next day I watched it a third time. This movie made me want to live in it. I wanted to watch more and more, even though the movie in no way felt like it was shory or quick. Starwars was never my thing but this... this has me hooked.

4:58 yoooo that's a MAJOR spoiler for Dune Messiah and onward. There are people who haven't read the books. 6:00 it doesn't "go *against* everything the imperial conditioning stands for". The conditioning is supposed to make them INCAPABLE of doing harm even if they wanted. That's where the shock lies. The Harkonnens managed to break that somehow.

That was a very PG way to phrase “AI enslaved the humans of this universe for a few centuries and then the humans rose up and essentially committed genocide”

@2:29 what I find really interesting and what's only hinted at in the book is that the blue eyes are an adaptive mechanism that allow the Fremen to see better on a glaring, sand-covered planet. It's mainly just seen as a quirk or to indicate who's "addicted" to spice, but it's truthfully a way the desert helps its inhabitants, its true inhabitants adapt and survive.

The only thing i missed in this movie was how doctor Yueh disabled the entire defense system and coms. LOL

Just watched the movie last night and I'm in love with the history and lore surrounding this universe. I've been binge watching all I can on explaining everything about it and the universe it takes place in. Really looking forward to the next movie.

Amazing film the only downside is that it ended but luckily we get a part 2!

Just might be one of the best book to film adaptions I’ve seen. It was amazing.

The Dune universe to me was unknown, and after seeing the movie I became slightly obsessed with some things, such as the vehicles shape and function, the languages that made appearance, the cultures and traditions, but the real function of the Spice made me really confused, I thought it was needed as fuel, but then I found some scenes of the movie of the 1980s where I understood more clearly the role of the Spice. Guess I'm going to start reading the novels to go deeper inside what for me is a new world

I have read the books since I was a teenager, seeing this movie has given the screen adaptation a fresh and proper representation. The novels are not just the original concept for this flick and the inspiration for many other concepts such as Star Wars, Warhammer 40k etc but it is one of the forefathers of true science fiction. A science fiction that not only creates a concept and looks at it but also analyse it in a way that could be scientifically feasible in our reality.

Watched this last night - absolutely insane! Can anyone get part 2 out before the end of the week please?
