No one will ever fully agree on a list of even the top 1000 albums but I do think the fact that this list is the result of tens of thousands of music fans voting on albums they love gives it some level of weight and credibility that a list from say, Rolling Stone or Pitchfork will never have.
while true, most people voting here are very clearly influenced by, for example, Rolling Stone or Pitchfork. the top 40 is still terribly reeking of Rolling Stone core album picks. thankfully, as time goes by, the site seems to be getting more and more younger users, which are making genres like hip hop and electronic music get their deserved recognition on the charts
@@xbenci Hip hop is pretty well represented on this list imo, it’s very loved over there. It’s really music by women they tend struggle with. I do agree there could be a bit more love for electronic music though.
@NIAAGGR567 ye look man I’m not here to criticize them or anything and at the end of the day we all know music is subjective, but yeah some of these rankings are “incorrect” music - standers wise and yeah whatever, I know it’s not the owner of this channel making these rankings and Rym is good but it has some obvious flaws
@NIAAGGR567 technically music is subjective since ppl react to it in different ways according to the emotions and experiences they’ve had and how that music resonates to them but yeah I agree there are some aspects that are objective, although id say that philosophically speaking the more objective you try to define music the less creative it gets but that’s just some food for thought
@@WhiteAssassion677 and yet some ppl enjoy lil pump more than Pink Floyd, how would you explain that? Is there something wrong in that? No cuz there is no right or wrong in music. Maybe you can define that guy as having cheap music taste or whatever but you can showcase an artistic merit over anything pretty much and I’ll say it again that there is some objectivity to music but just like how you can listen to who dat boy by Tyler and love the aggression and punchiness of it other ppl won’t like those qualities and say it’s just noisy and yelling and whatever. Stuff like familiarity also play a big factor
Same bro it actually hits on another level it’s insane I started with Kid A and I knew it was supposed to be good, had no idea what to think after the first 2 other than that it was weird af, then I heard National Anthem and I fucking died Amazing how every album and independent project is incredible from them (except Pablo Honey but you know), having 3 albums in the top 10 of all times crazy
@@musicminute2004 close to the edge is considered by a lot of critics to be the pinnacle of prog (but yeah this types of lists doesn't make any sense and it's not even worth to discuss over)
Albums I feel like should’ve made this list Carole King - Tapestry Joni Mitchell - Blue Sade - Love Deluxe Prince and the Revolution - Purple Rain Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill Michael Jackson - Thriller Aretha Franklin - I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back Fleetwood Mac - Rumours Kanye West - Graduation
Unfortunately purple rain is deweighted because its a soundtrack and just doesnt have that many ratings. Its rating is 4.12 so it actually would get into the top 100. Also i would like to add that ranked #3 in soundtracks so thats already a great achievement.
They’re absolutely overrepresented in the ranking. Maybe if it were the best 100 albums of the 90’s and early 2000s, they could have 3 albums in the first half. But this thing is an all-time ranking.
@@kuunoooo7293 There were far more than 2 rap albums, and this is an all time list, rap as a genre is only a few decades old, so it’s to be expected that some other genres appear more frequently, especially rock which is extremely broad.
@@anthraxboiYeah, it's though to choose between those 2. I'm also a guy that thinks Islands is underrated. It actually is hard to say they have a subpar album. Amazingly consistent for sure, unlike Floyd f.i.
Heaven or Las Vegas definitely deserves its spot as the best album of 1990 and the 57th best album of all time, and I will not hear any arguments to the contrary!
0:21 my favourite album of all time, considering how Massive Attack (and generally Down Tempo for that matter) are only really big in the UK, seeing them crack the Top 100 is enough for me. I love this album, to me, it’s just perfect.
YO i started to listen to Massive Attack because of this comment and came to find that one of the songs they made is the intro song to my all time favourite TV show House MD. THANK YOU RANDOM PERSON
random question: do you also listen to royksopp? i used to a lot and i got always told they are similar to massive attack but never got round to listening to them.
@@stevemalek2970 Didn't say anything about not being allowed to have opinions on this list. All I'm just saying is that this list was compiled by the opinions of thousands of music fans, not one singular person
If you're sorting by new, scroll back up and sort by top. It's all boomers whining about there not being enough rock when the list was pretty much all rock

The amount of people that don’t understand that all these ratings come from a website where people “rate your music” is baffling to me. I don’t care if you think “x is overrated” it’s not this guy’s opinion it’s based on thousands of other’s opinions it’s what the rating number is based off. This doesn’t mean your favorite album is “invalidated” it means that it’s probably either unheard of “low ratings” or people on the internet don’t like it. Y’all don’t have to be babies just because your favorite artist isn’t in the top 1 or because recurring artist have multiple albums in the top spots it’s literally just a number. No list is perfect because music is constantly changing, evolving and moving. One minute your favourite might be Ziggy then ok computer then speaking in tongues then tpab or Dsotm. There's so much and it's so varied that I personally could never place a definite favourite, I just love music
Yes, this probably ought to be renamed the top albums of the Anglosphere, because you are not going to convince me that out the millions of artists in the world 99% percent of the best music comes exclusively from the UK and US
Just a recommendation I'm throwing in the air like that but I personally would like to see more videos based on specific years/decades. I like genre-based videos but year or decade-based videos would be an even better showcase of how music is such a chameleon-like, versatile form of art, imo!
Why not? Their albums have been hailed as some of the greatest of all time, and for good reason. They are one of the most influential bands of the past few decades.
@@thepillowcomfortable1880 i'm a massive radiohead fan but no matter how big of a fan i am of any artist, i would never put three of their albums in my top 10 of all time

I personally think the best Radiohead album is In Rainbows. For the top 3, (Kid A, In Rainbows, OK Computer) I find In Rainbows to be the most enjoyable and listenable.
Probably most people would agree it'stheir most enjoyale and listeable album, and how consistent and incredible the songwriting it, In Raibows has every right to be in the top 10. Kid A is their best tho. prob my fave album oat
Kid A is an absolute musical breakthrough, although I do not dispute that In Rainbows are also incredible. Radiohead are amazing, I just love their entire discography. (sorry I don't speak English, I use translator)
OK COMPUTER breaks the paradigms of rock... KID A is a mutation from rock to electro-experimental, but with a mainstream band, something nobody has done before...
@@ash_11117 I don't know, maybe I'm not looking at it objectively because I listen to dire straits too much, but for me communiuque is in god's realm. I haven't seen many fans except me. The self-titled album is listened to a lot by people. Brother in arms is also very good but one of them could be here.
BEFORE WATCHING THIS VIDEO OR COMMENTING; KNOW THIS this is ONLY a top 100 list and putting whatever album you think should be in on the list ALSO means pushing out other insanely good albums, not everything can fit in a top 100, the common albums people are wondering why they arent in this list are mostly hovering near the top 100, which is impressive considering that there are likely over 35,000 albums that have enough ratings to be in the contending spots for the top 100

A very good list. My ranking would be different, and some of those albums would probably be more in the 100-200 area for me, but who cares? This is here is still better than most music websites lists. There are only 14 albums on this video that I don't already know and own, and I'm pretty sure a lot of them are great.
La lista la dominarían Yes, Genesis y Crimson en los primeros puestos. Obvio se colarían bandas como Tull, ELP, Floyd, Rush o GG también con sus mejores producciones. Y Kansas posiblemente no estaría tan alto como realmente merecen...
Isn’t it funny that just a month before this video came around, there was the top 100 Worst music releases. What a Contrast between the two videos. Also, it’s funny how both of these lists feature an album by The Beach Boys.

amazing top ten! from a bias standpoint, i would've put tpab low because im not the biggest hip hop/rap fan, but i can appreciate the album and definitely see why people would call it number one. i also wouldve added some oasis somewhere in the top 30 too. but thats all just based off of my personal favourites. i love talking about music and sharing my opinions/hearing others musical opinions :)
Tpab has to be number 1 tbh. The storyline is incredible and it touches on some big problems with America, it’s just completely on another level and I’ve personally never heard anything like it.
@@benonyt2150 It's list of the best albums of all time (the whole world) not top 100 US albums. TPAB is a great album but it's not even the best hip-hop album of all time. Will I take TPAB over "the court of the crimson king" or "Long Season/98-12-28" Probably not. The list goes on.
@@Darth_Bulldog yeah man, it was astounding. i’m Always listening to music throughout the day so i knocked this down in around 40 days. i’ve listened/listen to many artists here so i’m glad i was able to delve deeper into each of their discographies. what do you think so far ?
Great work! Being 60, I grew up with so many, and bought so many more - I stopped counting how many I've got as I was listening as I was jotting down new stuff to seek out - it's lists like this that help keep my ears open (other sources are available, of course)
Jaco Pastorius’s Word of Mouth should have made the list. It’s the greatest album I have ever heard by a landslide. The Basslines are incredible and Jaco played almost all the instruments on it too. It also has such a unique blend of Caribbean, Japanese, and Fusion styles of music.
If you see the list, jazz albums (and instrumental ones in general) are harder to crack top spots for the RYM audience. Otherwise, Trane, Davis and Brubeck would have been way way higher imo.
A really good list. I disagree with certain placements being where they are but with a list like this ask yourself, are there albums here that shouldnt be? If anyone told me they liked any of these albums and that its a top 100 album of all time, i would totally understand their reasoning for just about any album here
You've got to be kidding. No more than half the albums on this list actually deserve to be here. Illinoise and Spiderland? lol Pimp a Butterfly at #1? No, just no.

The main guy in the band (Kevin Shields) is from Cabinteely as well, for what it's worth. I thought it was pretty cool that they were from Ireland, but it blew my mind when I found out he was from the same town as me.
