❤ I've just mentioned it in a comment, into the woods is one of the most solid book on writing because you did study other theorists, you quoted them, and you shared your own references. Also why we tell stories is the most central piece of screenwriting and you're the only one to give this question the space it deserves. Thank you !

I have read most of the books on your "classic list" and endorse your selection. As for these 12, I've read "On Writing", "Your Screenplay Sucks" and "Inside Story", and strongly recommend them all. By the way, I went to USC Cinema school with Will Akers. He's a very cool dude.

Great video! I’d recommend adding Richard Walter’s book, Screenwriting. Short, timeless, profound, witty. I recommend it to any writer I meet.

So glad you included "The Idea," by Erik Bork. It should become an industry standard along with "Save the Cat." But I would advise anyone to read "The Idea" first. The author also offers a new online class in which he offers live feedback to students via Zoom.

Into the Woods is my favourite screenwriting book by a long way. Also Kim Hudson’s ‘The Virgin’s promise’ is one of the most inspiring and useful books I’ve come across. It has an amazing focus on a type of ‘Heroine’s journey’

Thank you for your list, I will read The Idea and My Story can Beat up Yours. The best book on writing of all times though ... is Writing Drama by Yves Lavandier, and I'll tell you why. He's one of the few true theorist, like John Yorke in your list, who actually quote other books on writing and gives a frank opinion about them. I feel most of the theorists only repeat what they learnt in other books, mostly stealing from Syd Field and Christopher Vogler, without even quoting them, to pretend they invented the whole thing. And they don't only steal the ideas, they steal the references too. We are in 2023 and we still read the same analyses of the Verdict, Casablanca, Chinatown, the Piano and never one movie made after 2005 or even animation movies, come on ! Lavandier in Writing Drama has worked hard enough to quote books on writing, plays but also on psychology, biographies of writers, and he is smart enough to question Truby or Snyder, to gives tons of references and analyses about movies, plays, comics, TV shows. If there's only one book to read, I'll recommend this one ! Then Into the Woods by John Yorke, the only one who cares about why we tell stories. Romain

Good lord! How did you miss Bob Saenz's "That's Not The Way It Works"? It's by far the breakout, must-read book on screenwriting of the year.
