@@ThePerfumeGuy It really, really is. Guerlain has a good one, too. Patchouli Ardent but I don't know if it could be considered a chypre. It's rose and patchouli without any oakmoss...
@@HunterAkalirai11 just picked up a sample after an in store skin test. ❤❤❤. Definitely going to order a 9mL decant. Also considering (trying it’s clone) Club De NUIT Intense Woman- Based on reviews it DOES NOT lean feminine
I’m still learning a lot about fragrances, mostly from you, Sebastian! I didn’t know that Rose Chypre was a category. Turns out, I own several of these on your list, so I guess this is a category I definitely like! Thanks so much for the video!
This has nothing to do with the topic of this video, but I just wanted to thank-you for introducing me to Vanagloria from Laboratorio Olfattivo. It has quickly become my favorite vanilla fragrance.
Fell in love with Zoologist Cardinal. It’s so classically made I worry it might turn off the usual zoologist fan, but it’s so wel balanced and the rose, musk, vanilla heart contrasts so well with the cooler forestry mosses and leaves. The limited edition red bottle is so handsome and that’s probably how I’d describe the scent, handsome and classic. A fitting goodbye from a master perfumer.
There's one classic rose chypre you missed that I THINK you can still buy and is still in production (?)... Emmanuel Ungaro's DIVA! this 80's beauty was created by none other than JACQUES POLGES and it's a serious perfume: a burst of aldehydes, cardamom, tuberose, bergamot and Mandarin orange, heart notes of both Turkish and Moroccan rose with carnation, Ylang, narcissus, jasmine and orris, with a base of honey, oakmoss and CIVET.. this perfume is incredible and I highly recommend getting your nose on it!!
Rose is my favorite note and I can never have too many rose perfumes. POAL is magical. Definitely at the top for me too. I can only imagine how amazing it was when it was first released.
@@TheMothernerd it's very vintage, and if you're comfortable w naturals and animalics that are vetted but not ifra compliant, you would be impressed. I have 4 Melegs and they are exceptional (I'm not always on board w his politics, but who cares??) Madeleine peach is a chypre that features civet and deer musk. It's incredible (perhaps even better than civet cat because of the peach accord...) And he's got some squirreled away...
@@marinara5000 thanks for the intel! I'm located in Vancouver and have been wanting to visit his studio for a while. Maybe it's time I arrange a visit. :)
Chypre is my absolute favorite family of fragrances. From the ones mentioned I LOVE Gris Dior, and I have been trying to get hold of a sample of Portrait of a Lady forever, without success. Other favorite chypres for me are La Panthère from Cartier and Eau de Soir from Sisley.
I enjoy these fragrances but I am complete with POAL, I blind bought it after watching one of your top lists and it's one of the best fragrances I have in my collection, it's so amazing and a huge compliment magnet, I really don't need anything else on this front. Thanks for the video Sebastian!!!
I just now realized im a cheypre lover because i never knew the notes that makes up a cheypre fragrance until now but I do love them. POAL is one of my fave fragrances as well (I’m currently big with FM fragrances), but I do have to agree with you about FM being under estee lauder. I recently bought new 100ml bottles of POAL, MUSC Ravageur, and Iris Poudre as backup, and they all definitely smell faint compared to my orig vintage bottles 🥴 I had to spray my new POAL 8x just to get that “beast mode” oomf whereas i only spray twice with my older bottle 🤷🏻♀️ Also, it doesn’t stay on my clothes and smell strong after dry cleaning/laundry wash.
I have been hearing you talking about Portrait of a Lady for years. I don’t know why it took me so long to try and I finally did it a couple weeks ago. OMG I love it! Now I want a bottle!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
Never tried POAL however on one of Sebastian’s videos, he recommends Diptyques Eau Capitale as being very similar to POAL. ….and WOW ITS ❤😍❤ and if POAL is even better then It must be absolutely HEAVENLY!
Always your videos make me cheerful. Purchased Rose Inscence, Bergamote 22, Tam Dao on your recommendation..and they turned out to be one of my finest great choice fragrances. Thanks for uploading good info about perfumery. Any perfume just perfume guy 😊.. Wishes from India 🇮🇳🇮🇳
When I began my journey, never in a million years would I have guessed that rose, much less rose chypre, would become a favorite of mine. Now I have the bug to guy buy some! Thanks for the great reviews, Sebastian!
I guess I still don't understand what chypres are. From your list, I own both the original and new formulations of Darby Rose. It's such a bright, watery, fresh rose to me, so I don't know what about it would make it chypre, as it seems to be a very straightforward floral.
I haven’t ever heard you talk about L’Occitane fragrances, but I recently had the opportunity to try Eau D’Iparie and found it to be a delightful rose chypre lifted by a big dose of pink pepper. Also enjoy Radical Rose from Matiere Premiere.
Farmhouse in Spring by Solstice Scents. Daffodil, orange blossom, magnolia, burnt cypress wood, sun baked earth. Smells like burnt bushes, grass flowers mixed with a very masculine smoked dirt accord
I’m in the minority because I don’t understand the fuss over Portrait of a Lady. I almost did a blind buy & I’m glad I didn’t. I like other Frederic Malle fragrances in the discovery set I bought better. Personally I don’t like rose heavy fragrances that dominate. I can tolerate rose if it’s subdued in the background. I’m still giving it a chance though and hope it grows on me!
There are some surprises in your list especially in the middle of the video. 😂 My all time favorite is Gris Dior - such an elegant and timeless interpretation of rose patchouli combo. ❤
I received PoaL for Christmas. I knew of it because of your channel. I can’t say I am a fan of roses. But do like spice and dirt. So I am really enjoying this fragrance. I wouldn’t have put rose and patchouli together. But they are partners, no? I want to experience oakmoss, but will have trouble finding it. But there are plenty of great fragrances to try. I appreciate your descriptions because I don’t want to smell too sweet or fruit or flowery. I prefer unisex scents, I think. Thank you! Happy Valentine’s Day to you!
My favorite rose chypre of all time is L’Arte di Gucci edp, but I am down to my last bottle now and it’s almost impossible to find. Runners up include ELdO Rossy de Palma and Room 1015 Hollyrose. Thank you, Sebastian, for so many wonderful new suggestions!
A classic perfume style for sure. Not quite the same with the modern interpretations, but I'm glad it's still around. Happy to say that POAL finally started to grow on me too. To the point where I picked up a partial. Also picked up a very good clone that's getting more use? 😂 Yeah, save the good stuff, compound that vibe. 🌹 Time for Aramis' 900 methinks!
I only know 4 fragrances from this list- Rose Prickl, Rouge Velours, Portrait of a Lady, and Gris Dior. So, lots more for me explore. Although I must admit, I've tried Noir de Noir very early on in my fragrance journey, and I didn't understand it. So, it would he interesting what I think of it now that I'm more immersed into fragrances.
I'm fan of Chypre and of course Chypre Rose composition, 🌹 Checkmate is nice , love to add some more to my collection, thank you Sebastian for great suggestions, I would love to find those 3 bonus fragrances
On non citrus roses, I have to put Amouage Rose Incense on my list as it's the first rose that doesn't make me think of those tiny decorative soaps. 😁😁 I'm going to have to dig more into these chypre fragrances and give them a try too.
Thank you for the video! I think you forgot about Guerlain Rose Barbare and Dior Midnight Poison…. Haha and for me very similar cypher is La Panthers from Cartier and Shalimar Millesime Tonka. Even there’s No roses per Fragrantica……
i'm into gourmands and vanilla normally but something about rose and patchouli I like the sound of. I'm going to check out some of your suggestions. Thank you for the video.
I was lucky enough to get a bottle of Gummus, a limited edition fragrance from January Scent Project, which is a fantastic rose chypre that uses a lot of vintage ingredients. So fresh and naturally sweet. I really want to try Gris Dior, I have always heard such great things but have never smelled it. Also still need to get a hold of Rosenrot.
Portrait Of A Lady was a masterpiece, a 10 out of 10, but the new formulations ruined this masterpiece, it still smells good, but lost half of its longevity, depth and complexity it had.
My favorite is byredo rose noir (sadly discontinued)and I really like chypre sublime by floral street. Also I own Rammstein's Rosenrot (thx again for the recommendation) and Juliette has a gun Lady Vengeance. Have a nice week-end
Question: I always associate patchouli with the smell of marijuana, which I detest! For that reason I avoid patchouli heavy fragrances. Is that fair or unfair? I don't think I've ever smelled it on its own.
Curious, when you say Hermetica are moisturizing fragrances, what that means? I’ve never heard of a scent described that way! Thanks, love your videos!
Good afternoon Sebastian, in terms of rose & patchouli, what do you think about Bodicea the victorious's Ardent compared to Noir de Noir? Which do you prefer?
IFRA has ruined the chypre 😢 I'm afraid that one day all perfumes will be full of synthetic aromachemicals, which I have personally seen cause headaches and allergies in people. Get rid of screamwood and it's cousins, bring back the beautiful oakmoss.
Sebastian, I have been watching about the floods in California and I hope you are all well and safe !! The video is of a lessor importance at this stage.
