Hope you’re doing a top pick for the best locations in the Silent Hill Series. One of my top picks is the giant bloody fan in the alternate dimension of the School in the first Silent Hill where the west exit is suppose to be. I never expected the game to go all out Hellraiser when I played it the first time. It’s like the game is mocking you for thinking the game couldn’t get more horrifying and disturbing and the you see the giant fan.

It’s not unplayable. It’s outdated. Compared to other horror titles nowadays. Fix camera angles are more of a preference and don’t really enhance scares. This is also coming from someone who played the original games as well and a huge fan. And can honestly say not once have I ever been scared. Re7 immerses you into the game with the first person this creating tension and suspense as opposed to fixed cameras.

My all-time favourite shot is the RE Remake's east wing 2nd floor bedroom, the one across the insect specimen puzzle room. The camera is positioned under the table to create a feeling that someone is hiding there. Combine this with a single set of candles dimly illuminating the room and a comment about footsteps going straight through the bed - and you got yourself the creepiest room in the entire game without a single enemy or a jumpscare.

This was a really interesting & unique video. I've always admired the fixed angle RE games, but I never thought about ranking my favourites. For me, one that always stands out in my memory is the mansion's top floor mirror corridor from RE1 remake, with the mirror where you can see the reflection of a zombie. Something about it just always felt so creepy and special; seeing the reflection of the zombie and trying to understand how to counter it really did play tricks on my mind when I was younger. I'd for real do anything for another RE game in that style, I miss it so much.

100% agree on the train yard angle in RE2. Such a great moment taking in the refineries off in the distance combined with 'The Marshalling Yard' track. So good.
@lostandtravellingwhentimes9260
I personally believe that the remake of resident evil 1 is the best looking game of all time. The camera shots are specifically chosen to benefit the atmosphere and gameplay. The colour palette is amazing, the gothic horror of the mansion and woods areas is just spellbinding. The enhanced mist, rain and other particle effects in the remaster make it look even better. This is the one game that I screen shot all the time to show my friends.

True, but I wish the PS4 version wasn't so pixelated at times, like some shots like when you are first descending down into the area with the four mask statues are amazing, but others like the second floor east hallway look REALLY bad at times.

This is a really interesting subject here. Early RE games had a certain art direction that was something special. While I do enjoy the newer titles with 1st & 3rd person cameras, the classic fixed angles created an atmosphere that is hard to replicate. You could honestly take a screenshot of many scenes in the RE1 remake & turn it into a framed picture, the visuals still hold up after 20 years. Good work on the video Mayo, I agree with a lot of your choices here for the camera angles. It would be a nice throwback to see a modern RE with this type of gameplay, or to have it as a bonus option in the menus.

The dormitory across from the bug/lure puzzle has always given me the creeps. You don't know if there are dead bodies in those beds, there is something looking at you from under the desk and the description for the beds is creepy. I love that first camera angle.
@GraaD-87
@GraaD-87 Год назад
Especially in the original game, yeah. This room had no enemies, yet always gave me the creeps. It almost feels as if a dead body might get up from the bed any moment. Back in my childhood I didn't really understand the actual limitation of prerendered backgrounds, so... after having a zombie come out of a cupboad not so long ago, I was kind of expecting one to raise from under the sheet here as well. An intro scene in the REmake (where a zombie gets a headshot) is a nice throwback to this exact feeling too.

@ThePensivePen
@ThePensivePen Год назад
Great idea for a vid, really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on so many of these camera angles that are basically burned into my brain from how much I have played these games. I think it's truly a shame that this type of camera view more or less died out for a long time, though I'm happy there's been an indie resurgence and we even get them occasionally in larger budget games like those by Supermassive Games. I enjoy third person games, but it's kind of tiring how every single game now basically uses the exact same camera system, I really miss the variety we used to have. For your #2 pick, the dining table, I always interpreted those pieces of metal sticking out from the guy's back as forks and knives that'd been stabbed into him. Maybe during the early hours of the outbreak this guy turned and some of the other diners had to deal with him with whatever they had on hand. Or maybe they only /thought/ he was turning and in a mass hysteria murdered this poor innocent guy just trying to enjoy his croissant. It's great how these angles can hint at a story and let the imagination run wild about what might have happened. Really appreciate also how much respect you show to the original RE1 in this video. Way too many people treat the remake as a total replacement for the first game. I consider them to be different, but nearly equally great, takes on the same story that are both worth playing. One of my own favorite shots in the remake is one that takes place in the lab in a room full of hanging bodies that were probably used for experiments. You can see a really eerie hanging mist in the room and it feels reminiscent of a scene near the beginning of Return of the Living Dead in which there's a hanging body in a cold room in a medical storage warehouse.

The RE2 remake was quite good, dark atmosphere, gory details on the zeds. But the original's lighting always has this weird charm to it. If the remake focuses more on the dark being unable to discern the unknown, the fear from the original is more about what you can see at the present. That being said, my favorite angle in the series is the hall at the second floor in RE2 during the crow ambush. Something about it just oozes a lot of feelings for me. Alongside great photography.

Very interesting video. Resident Evil 1-3 are art for me and I know that it is especially because of the great camera angles and soundtrack. It's really a shame that gamers "evolved" in such a way that they find tank controls unplayable and fixed camera angles the worst thing in the world. For me they're some of the simplest controls out there and in conjunction with fixed camera and creepy soundtrack form an addicting, pleasurable, deep experience. Very sad that we probably won't see another AAA game or a game from Capcom or Konami with all this style brings with it, like cinematography, care and subtlety. Maybe someday these companies will perceive that this style is the perfect response for the increasing in costs that result in rushed experiences, mostly seen in the last half of RE2 remake and in the entirety of the RE3 remake.

The problem is gamers nowadays are obsessed with practicality and having full control of their character movement in the name of "fluid controls" that no one seems to care about gaming as an art anymore...which is fine if you're playing an action game or a shooter that requires it...but for a survival horror game you need to include some limitations on the player so they don't break the survival horror aspect of it. The beauty of the classic Resident Evil titles was how they blended in survival horror elements with the artistic beauty of the fixed camera angles that helped creating an awesome atmosphere...and the beauty of the controls was it kept players from getting "too creative"...opressing the player into it system and forcing you to deal with the tools you've got in order to stay alive....and sadly people seem to intrepret that as "Bad controls" when they're actually designed to balance the gameplay in favor of the enemies and making them feel like a geniune threat (Remember how in Remake ONE zombie encounter was enough to make you feel dread). And yes, RE2 Remake was a great survival horror game in it's own right inspite of the lack of fixed camera angles but it was an exception, the only reason that game worked because it used the original level design from the original plus it made zombies very robust against headshots (which lets face it, was a necissity, as stupid as it felt because of the free aim and OTS camera)...but even then the game lost most of it aesthetic beauty and atmosphere from the original precisely because of the camera change. I just hope one day we get an RE game with fixed cameras again...but for now, I'll be enjoying Tormented Souls...

The 2nd floor balcony where we find Forests body re1 original. 3. The 2nd floor window overlooking the helipad in re1 original where we get the battery. 4. The basketball court from re2 original. 5. The hallway with the locked desk in the rpd 2nd floor in re2 original right before you get to the library. 6. The chiefs office in re2 original. 7. The stars office of re2 original. 8. The eltrain yard where you meet mr x in re2 original and fight a G birkin. 9. The train at the end of re2. 10. The alleyway in re3 with the clothes store where we hear that guy scream as were chasing brad into the bar. 11. The street leading to the rpd in re3 original. 12. The wrecked bus area in re3. 13. The stagla gas station. 14. The train at city hall. 15. The warehouse saveroom. 16. The boutique room. 17. The first traincar we see in re0. 18. The main hall of the training facility of re0. 19. The 2nd floor hall with the red door just down from the double doors of the training facility. 20. The room where we fight the giant centipede in re0. 21. The chruch main hall in re0. 22. The first room after the church bit in re0 just after getting off the elevator. 23. Re0s copycat room from re2s birkins lab where we find enrico. 24. The first cabin in re4, come on the games 17 yrs old i think thats enough to be a classic! 25. The room where we find the tram car in re0. Note: These were in NO specific order i just felt these rooms defined their respective games. 😎

The greatest ever angle in a fixed camera angle game still has to be the one at the beginning of Alone in the Dark where a demon is looking out the window as you approach the house lol.

It would be really cool if you made a list of you favorite demons from all the doom games. Or even better, rank them all lol. I would watch it in a heartbeat

Resident Evil Zero and Code Veronica had some very good fixed camera angles too.

Funny how the fixed camera angle only came to life because the developers had to make a compromise performance wise. At the same time it´s a great choice and improves the mood of the game a lot.

I'd have probably added a couple from the RE2 lab, but great list!

You're the reason I tried RE 1 Remake two years ago and fell in love with it. If I only have time for one this halloween, Alisa or Tormented Souls?

Excellent list. One angle I would like to add as an honorable mention is the initial overhead angle of the marble room in RE 1 original and remake. The angle is so far away from the character, giving scope to the high ceiling that could end up coming down on them.

Amazing angles indeed. God, I wish I could play these games again without knowing the games already. However, back to the angles. There is one in RE: Code Veronica that I always loved. It is the way to the Ashford Mansion. It is a few years ago, when I played it the last time. But it is a bridge(?) that leads to their small house, away from the place where most of the game takes part.

The main thing that resonated with me in this wasn't the camera angles (although still facinating), it was the scratched cd causing a freeze lmao, had that 1 too many times in my life 😂
