I love this rifle. With a folded stockmeasures 63 cm, is about 1kg lighter(3,5 kg) than AK, in fullauto mode it is 30% faster than AK.(800-850/min). If You take a magazine for 15 rounds, it will fit in your backpack. You can go to the mountains knowing that a friend VZ 58 will easily defend You....I hit a traffic sign without optics at 80 -100 m. This rifle is universal. (For hunting, defend activities and sport) Magazines for VZ 58 are produced for 10, 15, 30, 40 and drumm for75 cartridges

Another very informative video Mishaco. Yes the Vz58 has it's limits. It is a combat weapon, not a Gucci gun. Here in the Czech republic it is like our AR, everybody has one. The strongest complaint I have heard about it is that unlike the AR or other weapons it has not been given any substantial improvements since it's inception in the late 50s. The short stock is a complaint here as well specially that Czechs rate as the 3rd tallest nation on average. As for the VZ24-26 I believe it to be a real winner, heck the UZI was based on it. The Vz24-26 is simple, compact, cools well because of the open bolt, reliable and with the 7.62TT round very effective. It is my go to weapon for close quarter involvements

@continentalmilitaria
@continentalmilitaria 3 года назад
@@misha5670 The people I know that served with the Vz24-26 loved it. It was know as the bicycle pump because of how it looked. BTW the full name of the VZ-58 is Sa/Vz58 (samopal vzor 58) translating to sub-machinegun pattern 58. Same as the AK the Vz58 was a move from a sub-machinegun towards an assault rifle, hence why it kinda has those sub characteristics and feel. The US went from a rifle like the Garand and m14 towards and assault rifle (M16) and you distinctly see and feel that rifle pedigree. Russian progression ...PPSH41...SKS...AK (Czech VZ24-26....Vz58) Then the US...Garand...M14...M16. I did not say Mosin nagant for the Russians since the PPSH fit much better with their combat doctrine.

The Czechs going into the post-war(WW2) era were before and after were one of the leading firearm manufacturer's in the world. Since going into the post-war(WW2) era the weapons manufactured were a combination of their innovation design and the best innovations from the German small arms of WW2. The VZ58 RIFLE is an excellent semi-auto rifle(converted for use by law-abiding citizens). From the late fifties through this very day; t his rifle is very much used today as it was used in yesteryears by the military's of the world on every battlefront. This semi-auto rifle is customizable but a person has to shop around for what they want.

Like your video. I served in CZ army at the times when vz. 58 was a standard equipment for soldiers. I’d argree with some of your comments but I don’t agree with one. More specificaly the difficuilty of field strip. Yes there are some challenges like small parts but it has a reason for that (better reliability, higher rate of fire, lesser recoil). Also all soldiers where trained to perform field strip and assembly within 10 seconds and practiced it again and again to overcome little bit more complex construction. Also, I’d disagree that the different construction was just political. Jiri Cermak (the designer of the rifle) made this firearm with was he had learned from AK’s weaknesses to make this gun better. I agree it is not the best gun in the world yet but on the other hand at the times (1950s) it was an extraordinary gun.

ČZ vz.58 only has one significant issue. In Czech Republic we are not allowed to own original military full-auto version. Only those with semiauto modifications. And as you know, if you modify something later, it is not as good as original. But still this rifle is one of the top 7.62x39 choices to go with. Military grade rifle underwent same testing as AK system before it was allowed for army adaption. Don't worry about reliability, those tests were rough.. for example continuous 20k rounds only with cooling in water barrel after every third magazine.
@dexm2010
@dexm2010 3 года назад
If the original military receiver is modified over there for semiauto only, are you allowed to purchase a VZ like that in Czech Republic? Full auto would be nice, but aside from maybe some springs needing to be replaced, just making the gun semiauto only shouldn't hurt the reliability really at all would it?
@__Ryan_
@__Ryan_ Год назад
@@dexm2010 yes it’s called the “gremlin”. The full auto parts were necessary for semi auto function as well. Czechpoint welds a tab on the carrier to prevent this and it works just fine. Both of mine have never had an issue
@bartlomiejpiszczek3987
@bartlomiejpiszczek3987 2 месяца назад
Converting military VZ58 to semi-auto-only requires just removing/shortening of "Spoušťová páka Sa 58" part. Nothing more. Simple and easy. It keeps all other features working, no gremlins etc. Safety/selector still works. Just, when set to "30" (full auto) nothing happens when trigger is pulled, like set on "safe". Removing anything more, like parts on the right side, which prevents from firing out of battery and take some action in full-auto fire, is technically not required and only causes troubles like gremlins. VZ58's converted this way (only "Spoušťová páka" removed) are better than new CZ585. CZ585 has more missing parts and is not reliable - gremlins and so. I bought VZ58 converted the minimal way - "Spoušťová páka" shortened, except for disconnector also shortened. I don't know why gunsmith did it. It has nothing to do with full-auto mode and causes the safety not working. Rifle fires semi auto in all three safety switch positions. I have replaced disconnector with new one and now my rifle has working safety and still is semi-auto only. I live in Poland and private owners are (except for few unclear exceptions) not allowed to own full-auto weapons.

CSA makes "bolt action" VZ-58s, which are not your grandfather's bolt action: bolt locks open after every shot; then closes when trigger is pressed; so the only difference with semiauto is that you press trigger twice per shot. I think you can have bolt action in CA?

I will say the folding stock isn't terrible, but it's not great. If you do a paracord wrap on it, it makes it pretty decent. Funny part about the short length of pull, is now that most militaries use plate carriers, it's probably a great length. I'm not a short guy, 6'3" and the length of pull doesn't bother me. But that's just me. I think it encourages being very squared up on the rifle. The handguards do get super hot super fast.

My biggest gripe with the VZ58 is the mag release is only on the left side, which can get weird to release on off hand mag changes (which technically means the AK is more ambi than the vz). Also, did the CZ military ever end up using metal heat shields on their gun? I’ve seen some rare photos of civilian Czech guns with a heat shield.

I don't know about the Czech military...I know there are many pictures of foreign soldiers (Czech? Slovak?) with VZs that have Israeli and other aftermarket made handguards, often with vertical grips. Not sure if any utilize any heat shields, or just rely on better ventilation somehow. The heat issue is manageable in various ways, but admittedly it is my own biggest complaint against the VZ (other than Czechpoint availability being spotty at best).

I have one modernized vz. 58 with israel (plastic) FAB kit (handguard, grip, M4 buttstock), "RR arms" dust cover with weaver rail and red dot sight on it + flashlight on handguard. When you change front handguard you will use original steel heat shield from the wooden part. No need to destroy... You can swap it back if you want go back again to "cold war" original look.

@Mishaco not sure where get your info but some are really false. Non of the original prototypes used blowback action. First prototype with blowback was made almost 40 years later and for 9mm version only. Those doesn't have locking wedge and carrier is weld together with bolt. First prototypes had piston in barrel trunion which caused self ignition after few hundred rounds so moved forward. Aim was made light rifle capable full auto but never meant to be sub machine gun. This is simply supported by doctrine how was rifle used. Soldiers very rarely shot in full auto so most people of the infantry had only 2-3 exercises where was used full auto ( often with focus on selecting shooters with good burst control for machine gunner role ). Another clue for that is selector where change from semi to full auto requires more effort in comparison to some other assault rifles. Compact size was due to fact that Czechoslovakian infantry was mainly motorised compared to many NATO forces including US. Actual average height of Czechoslovaks, Germans and Poles is comparable with Scandinavian countries so people from those countries are tallest in Europe. More than Brits which are comparable to Canadians who are statistically taller than US Citizens. Lower reliability than AK is also myth. Even Soviet reports after thorough tests in Soviet Union found reliability comparable with AKM. Problem was non originally rifles. US made receivers are based on guessed tolerances and dimensions usually from worn rifles. CSA/D-technic didn't have original drawings either. Parts kits was often from heavily used rifles. Magazines could pain, especially in US but Czechpoint bringing new magazines which are actually really good plus there is still Israeli option. AK magazine can be modified and will work just not hold open. Few friends modified drums for AKs to use on Vz58.

A submachine gun, by definition, fires pistol ammunition. No variant of the vz 58 is a submachine gun.
@vault_dwelIer
@vault_dwelIer 2 года назад
By modern definition you are correct. At the time of invention however, common definitions had not yet been established yet as small arms were going through a period of rapid evolution. The Chechens ended up classifying it as a submachine gun, at the time that definition must have made the most sense to them.

@@vault_dwelIer "The term "submachine gun" was coined by John T. Thompson, the inventor of the Thompson submachine gun, to describe its design concept as an automatic firearm with notably less firepower than a machine gun (hence the prefix "sub-"). As a machine gun must fire rifle cartridges to be classified as such, submachine guns are not considered machine guns." -Wikipedia By any reasonable definition I am correct. @vault_dwelIer

@@voxfan7403 Doesn't matter who coined it, I'm talking about standard accepted definitions. This was a period where half the of the world was still rocking what we today refer to as battle rifles, and the other half was starting to begrudgingly experiment with switching to something smaller. The m16 wasn't even a thing yet. The standard of what made an "assault rifle" literally didn't exist, so the Chechens designated it as what they figured fit the ticket best at the time. I don't consider John Thompson to be an authority on something he didn't even live to experience, he was long dead, so his opinion means nothing here.

I’ve always felt weird for hating the Vz.58. The trigger is extremely stiff and spongey, and the recoil impulse makes it almost painful to shoot. The position of the stock makes it so I can just barely get a sight picture. It’s a shame, since on paper it would appear to be a great gun.

Which flaws do you find to be dealbreaker’s?
@Lutz101
@Lutz101 3 года назад
@@manderson7173 If you forget to put the locking bolt back in the rifle after a field strip it will blow up when you fire it, which could seriously injure or kill you. If you forget to put the striker in when you reassemble it it will be very difficult to disassemble and you will wreck the striker spring doing so. Also too many small parts to lose during a field strip. You cannot mount an RDS low enough to see the iron sights through the glass so you have to remove the RDS if breaks or the battery goes flat before you can use the irons. They are also prone to misfires due to the botched mod to the fire control group to limit it to semi-auto fire, unless it has a half-arsed [patented] mod to the bolt carrier (nobody could be bothered to take the time to fix the fire control group). If you mount an optic over the ejection port the ejected cases will routinely strike the optic, damaging it over time, while the cases can bounce back into the open ejection port as a result of striking the optic and cause a stoppage. Also quality control issues with many of these rifles. Although it is an AK style self-loading rifle it cannot use readily available AK parts, mods, or mags.
@dexm2010

@@dexm2010 Seems the receiver would need some modification. Not worth the trouble IMO, to say nothing of the legal issues. A narrow minded view of of an infantry short rifle . their is no such thing as an "assault rifle". that was a phrase created by anti-firearm peoples to impress upon the general public their agenda to take firearms out of the hands of "LAW ABIDDING CITIZENS". It is the criminal who commits the crimes against humanity using illegally acquired firearms. It is not the firearm that commits the so called assault , it is the "PERSON/PERPATRATOR" using the weapon , that commits the assault! If you are a gunsmith/gun shop owner and use the the phrase "assault gun" you are wrong for that.
