As someone who breeds Chinese water dragons and has worked with Austrailian water dragons at a former job. Both are amazing captives for the intermediate keeper. They’re expensive to setup, costly to feed correctly, and prone to lots of health issues if setup improperly. But if done correctly, they are very rewarding! Great video, good info on the water dragons!

Musk Turtles are cool too, and they are the most recommended species for new keepers. They stay small, they need really small enclosures (a 20 gallon is enough for 2), they need shallower water than most turtles, and they are carnivorous so you don't need to worry about including greens in their diet, and best of all, they look like small snappers!

All of those are very cool 🙂!! I really enjoy looking at them and handling them but I know an aquatic or semi aquatic reptile would be alittle bit too much maintenance for me but that's just me. I tried to have a young snapping turtle once and I actually worked with it enough that it was pretty handle able but it ended up passing away after a few years unfortunately because it was very hard for me to keep up with the maintenance 😔 but it was very cool. Love the video! When we lived in the States we had 2 turtles (both yellow-bellied sliders). They were very social with us and loved going exploring in our backyard. We built them a pretty large tank/pond -100 gallon pond liner - & basking platform (which our cat Oscar loved to lay on under the heat lamp), and the turtles loved to come out and bask for hours every day. We gave them pellets as their main food (they wouldn't eat lettuce or veggies), and they'd get live fish to chase around and eat every couple weeks as a treat - FYI this looked a lot like shark week, those turtles can really move when properly motivated 😂

Here in Australia a LOT of people keep the Australian Water Dragons as pets, and they are gaining in popularity as such. The 'Eastern' variety is the most common, but there is the Gippsland sub-species as well (Intellagama lesueurii howittii), which are much rarer, having a range that is limited to a handful of rivers in the far eastern parts of Victoria (the 'Mitchel', 'Nicholson', and 'Tambo' rivers in the local government region of 'East Gippsland').

I'm one of the people that got a baby red eared slider... 28 years ago. I still have her, along with a cross red ear/yellow belly male I got as an adult 14 years ago from a turtle shelter. The red ear can be a b...ch sometimes (according to her everything in the water is potential food) but the cross has a very nice character and does not bit, could be due to character, him being smaller or perhaps its the yellow belly blood? He is also very curious and surfaces or even comes towards me when I talk to him. As long as you have a big aqua-terrarium they are easy. Give then a land space with UV lamp for basking and a BIG filter to clean the water (which you have to clean sometimes) they are not much work. They don't even need food every week. I give them pellets and other dried pet shop food along with raw meat/fish and sometimes vegetables. And when I find insects, spiders or snails in or around the house they become turtle food. They eat everything. You can go on holiday and they can go without food. They are less work compared to my rabbits which need food every day and require their cage cleaned often. But before you start with them you need to realize they can live for 30-40 years. Which is actually not very old for turtle standards. :) Watching this channel from the Netherlands and its great. Currently doing research to get my first lizard: a rankins dragon. It appears to be a lot more work compared to sliders, especially day to day work.

Just a warning about smelt it does contain the enzyme thiaminase so if you feed it you should make sure you supplement vitamin B-1. Lord knows I fed a lot in my youth, a bag of frozen smelt in the 60's cost fifty cents compared to comet goldfish that ran around ten cents which was more in my budget at the time. Tongue firmly in cheek if you want an aquatic snake similar to Nerodia but will take rodents you should look into cottonmouths. They eat anything including Nerodias are a lot more calm in disposition to Nerodias (wild caught that is) and are quite mellow captives. I have a lot of stories with old chunkhead, Wonderful snakes apart from that whole venomous thing. One native to Florida snake that got my interest is the red bellied swamp snake a friend of had some of these accept Tetra Reptomin as food. Also elephant trunk snakes and the various asian water snakes that are much more aquatic than nerodias. Trouble is finding healthy imports.

I just know Adam doesn't care for hots, so I understand why he excluded cottonmouths. I'm one to talk, tho. The hottest animals I've got are my hognoses!

I still remember attending a talk by Dr. Sherman Minton, He put up a slide of a hognose snake and said "You people are the only ones that get bit by these things!" Living in Florida I have had eastern coral snakes in the backyard which sort of reminded me not to be walking around in film flops! Speaking of cottonmouths, my favorite personal story is driving home from work I noticed car and a pickup truck stopped in the road a head. Somebody was chasing a snake around the road with a tennis racket. Getting closer I saw it was little cottonmouth. So I stopped and got my trusty snake hook out and a small cooler . I quickly got the snake into the cooler. Then I was asked by the obvious tourist," Was that a boa constrictor?" I told him no it wasn't, The guys in pick up truck who apparently were waiting for the guy to get bit, told me that snake can hurt you, yeah I know. When everybody left I released the snake back into the swamp. @@patricknyhan7491

If you get a CB yellow anaconda it can be tamed down. Just like with a Amazon Tree boa. (Ps was wearing the shirt today)

I would also argue that rainbow boas benefit from filtering water features like an in-enclosure pond as opposed to a pet bowl.

Before I got my Nile my breeder and contractor had several meetings before he built the 15ft x 19ft room for my baby boy. The water, aside from maybe food, is the biggest secondary cost its crazy. The enclosure was expensive as hell though. Smooth plastic walls with TONS of natural light and a 500 effn gallon pond. Please do your homework with semi aquatic critters and really know what you are getting into.

Garter Snakes are pretty awesome and some species are semi-aquatic! Only problem is, you gotta make sure you have a very secure enclosure because they will escape. I had one that I rescued from my cat, and she was incredibly calm... she never musked on me or anything, she was very easy to handle and liked to just chill, and she even had babies (which I actually released right away since this was technically a wild animal that I rescued) ... After her babies, I got her a new, bigger enclosure and didn't think she could escape from it ... well she did... escaped through the tiniest hole. So yeah, as long as the enclosure is super secure, I think Garter Snakes are pretty awesome pets!

Water dragons may still be common near you but I personally havent seen them in any pet stores since i was a little kid. For as long as i can remember petsmart has been beardies, leopard geckos, ball pythons, corns and albino corns, mexican black kings and the occasional slider or sideneck turtle

Coming from someone who owns a female Yellow anaconda (whom I love very much), they don't make good pets. I have a 11 ft female and I've been socializing her for years, yet she musks and is still pretty defensive (not once we get her out of the cage though, she generally calms down). They also aren't all that much smaller than Green Anacondas, that for the most part being because of the misconception that female Green anacondas can easily get up to 20ft, when most females max out at 13 to 15 ft. Yellow and Green anaconda are large snakes that must be taken seriously, even if it's a friendly socialized snake mistakes can happen. A good sized Yellow Anaconda is no joke, and it takes two people to handle my average sized Yellow anaconda. They also are very different than typical Boa Constrictors. Not a good idea to put the idea that Anacondas are anywhere near as good of pets as BCIs BCLs BCCs or other Boas, into the minds of non-experienced keepers. In my opinion, these are one of the hardest non-venomous snakes to care for. I do agree with you that they need a large water feature in their cages, which is one big thing about Anacondas which is difficult especially since they often poop in these huge water features, and their poop isn't small. I have a small warehouse that I rented for my reptiles, and my Yellow anaconda's cage is large, around 15x8 ft. In her cage she has a 6x8 ft water feature, that's hard to clean and has a ton of water in it. Something I feel that Brian Barczyk doesn't do correctly with his Anaconda is he doesn't have any cover inside the water feature, which is very important. I have a bunch of foliage and plant life in there, and ever since I added that she has been using the water way more, and has shown signs of being way less stressed. This does make cleaning and monitoring the water harder, but from what I've seen it's essential. They feel most at home in the water where they can't be seen, so crystal clear water with no foliage won't be comfortable for them, which is probably why his snake isn't in the water very often. Sorry about ranting, I actually really like your channel and I know you know that these aren't beginner, or intermediate snakes, this is just something I wanted to elaborate on, that they may not even be for lots of advanced keepers
