YES THERE REALLY ARE BENEFITS TO BEING IN A WHEELCHAIR. JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE IN A WHEELCHAIR DOES NOT MEAN YOUR LIFE CAN’T BE FOR FILLING. I WANTED TO MAKE A REALLY POSITIVE VIDEO HIGHLIGHTING BENEFITS TO BEING IN A WHEELCHAIR.
Today I’m chatting all about how you can be a happy positive independent, ambitions successful person with or without a wheelchair. I hope you like the video, and as always I want to hear what you think.
After suffering my spinal cord injury i have really had to adapt in life. So Im sowing you my disability lifestyle to raise disability awareness. as a disabled woman and a woman in a wheelchair who is paralysed, I thought it would be interesting for you to see, and hopefully give you some inspiration and motivation so that you can live more independently. wether you are paraplegic or quadriplegic i hope that i can help you.
i have lots of interesting disability videos, a lot of videos on how to cope with a disability and living life in a wheelchair, wether you are a girl boy woman or man. i have some paraplegic exercise videos, and advice. its important to keep your fitness levels up as much as possible as this can when physically and mentally with depression.

I have turned on community contributions. bit.ly/2rVde8n I want to make my videos accessible for all. If you would like to help out, and help others find my content, please work on the most popular disability videos first. Im dyslexic, and typing for long periods causes me extreme pain. Thank you for all your support. 💎

I am the coolest mother in the pre-school when i come to collect my 3½ year old, all the children are envious of my electric wheelchair, they think its the coolest thing ever. I never have to bother about a pram, my baby/child can sit in my lap and is safe and cuddled and he can follow me about much more and i dont have to carry him on my hip like the other mamas whos backs seems to want to brake after a few months. I love the childrens attitude towards it.

Being able to wear heels again was a big positive for me when I got my wheelchair! I'd previously not been able to because they caused too much pain and instability. Now, because of the positioning of my footplate, it's actually better for me to wear heels than not. I can't put my feet flat on my foot plate, so my ankles wobble around, causing extra pain. But wearing heels stops this! And while I can't get myself out of the house independently until I've raised the money for a SmartDrive, my wheelchair means that I'm able to get around my house, rather than being stuck in bed! I'm totally with you on looking at the positives - our wheelchairs are our freedom! Xx

grate positives, thanks tania. I can't wear heels as my feel a oddly stuck in one passion and can't even be pushed down. OMG I would LOVE a smart drive. ;)

1) No one cared that I wore sneakers to my cousin's wedding. 2) You don't have to worry about there not being a seat left. 3) When I have a seizure, I don't collapse to the ground, because I'm already sitting down. 4) It makes people realize that there is such a thing as invisible disabilities: When I was at a national park last year, I was having trouble standing in the visitor center, so I sat down on the floor against the wall (I was out of the line of traffic) to work on something, then one of the people working the gift shop told me that I couldn't sit there to work on what I was doing, and I had to go back out into the hall if I wanted to sit while I worked on it. 5 minutes later, my dad brought my wheelchair in (I usually go for as long as I can without it, then use it once I can't stand anymore), and 10 minutes later (after finishing what I was working on) I rolled right up to the gift shop desk, right in front of her. Based on her expression, I think she realized she unfairly judged the situation and regretted it. 5) Being able to get where you want to go as fast as you so choose. 6) Handicap parking! When the entire college parking lot is filled except for the handicap spots, it's glorious to be able to park in one. 7) Wheelies! Both fun and practical. 8) I can go out for longer than 20 minutes - I can spend all day at a museum or similar so long as I have my wheelchair. Without it, I can last maybe 20-30 minutes before my legs give out for good.

I'm a part time wheelchair user and I can relate to everything you were saying. Most of the time my disability is invisible but the wheelchair makes it visible which is a good thing now I've come to terms with needing assistance. The wheelchair is a symbol of independence for me. I am housebound a lot of the time and sometimes bedbound so being able to get out is amazing! Great topic :)

Momma Core here, I really didn’t want to be in a wheelchair, but sadly four months ago I had to come to terms that I needed to. I often cried in despair and even now when out and about I keep my head down. One big positive thing for me and the family is that it’s made us stronger, brought us even closer together. My husband and boys are so protective over me. So for all that I’m great full 🙌🏻🙏 thank you again for making these videos. I can’t tell you how much they are helping me.😘👌🏻

I find my chair, even as a part time user, allows me to do so much more than I would have. Before I could barely work part time but now I work very hard part time and am a GS leader. I was limited by my mobility whereas, now, I can take on so much more than I would have dreamed.

At least two more! 1. I have my own chair that I bring with me! When I could still walk with sticks I couldn't go anywhere unless I knew there was a seat every so often when the pain got too bad. A rollator helped but was still difficult and painful. Also if public seating is difficult for you in any way that problem is just not a problem any more. No more worrying about seats with arms you can't get into or out of or uncomfortable seats that pinch your bum, or flimsy seats that might collapse, or narrow seats that don't accommodate you. 2. A wider choice of clothing. Previously clothing had to work for booth sitting down and standing up. Trousers had to be exactly the right length and not fall down unexpectedly, tops had to be long enough to cover bits I didn't feel like exposing to the world. Now none of those things are an issue. I can wear trousers that are only approximately the right length and short tops that I wouldn't have worn before, and shoes I would never have been able to walk in.

1. I always have a place to sit 2. I always have a custom fitted chair to sit in so I don’t have to sit in uncomfortable rickety random chairs with no cushion or bad cushion 3. I can cover greater distances in less time and with less energy usage 4. I don’t have to carry things, I just put them on my lap, on the footrest or on the backrest 5. I can educate people around me about the importance of good accessibility! Accessibility isn’t just for us in wheelchairs, it helps elderly, people with temporary injuries, people with heavy luggage or other heavy items, parents with young children in prams. The list goes on and on, everyone benefits from a wheelchair accessible environment 6. I don’t have to STAND in line, I just sit instead 😂 7. Less risk of falling if something dislocates or subluxes (I have EDS) 8. Less risk of getting all POTSy when sitting down 9. Less risk of falling due to losing balance- I only really lose balance when standing or trying to walk 10. Meeting a lot of new people who I wouldn’t have met if I didn’t have my disability or my wheelchair This list is just in random order, all of it is really worth just as much for me. Getting my wheelchair in 2013 truly have me my life and independence back as much as was possible considering my condition. Without my wheelchair I would be stuck at home, with my chair I can go out when I want or need to or when I’m feeling well enough to venture out. I can attend events, go to concerts, amusement parks, go shopping, go to rock festivals or just play Pokémon Go locally, all of which would be impossible without the wheelchair as I can only really hobble around between two rooms on my feet. My wheelchair is my friend and always has been. It wasn’t a failure to need one! A wheelchair is freedom!

Yeah You know how you said once someone said I’d t to you “you’re too pretty to be in a wheelchair”? Well I use a cane. I was sitting in the disabled seat on the train and a woman grabbed my cane cursed me out for taking and tried to throw me out of my seat. Fortunately there was a gentleman who restrained her and I called the train police and she was arrested. Like what the beep! My point is one I wonder if I was a wheelchair user maybe she wouldn’t have attacked me. And also that complete strangers can sometimes stick up for you. The guy wrinkled his button up and was late to work for me. Yes there are crazies but there is also a lot of good in the world! Oh and also the woman had to stand until the next train stop and was barred from ever riding that train again! Poetic justice! I mean I don’t know how they’d enforce that but still ha ha.

Wow! So I feel like a lot of us who "look normal" have encountered judgmental and cruel people, but that takes the cake! I don't think being in a wheelchair would've helped though, because once you've transferred out, or you move your legs at all, people start making accusations, and society as a whole really has this preconceived notion that you can only use a chair if you have no motor function below the waist, or if you visibly have a physical deformity. I'm glad you got justice, and hopefully you feel a bit more secure from the help you received. People can be mean, and you've just gotta stand your ground and be vigilant and still go out, and enjoy life! But I know you already take that into practice. Stay strong girl!

Paused at 1:07 to think about positives. I think the main one for me is that I'm no longer confined to my bed - my wheelchair gives me freedom. And I often get to jump queues as a wheelchair user, that's a good perk. I have no issues with using a wheelchair, it's the other symptoms of the chronic illness that has left me needing a wheelchair that I struggle with.

Without my ‘chariot’ I wouldn’t be able to be a secondary school teacher, working with the amazing children that I do! I am lucky that I can still walk but I end up on my bottom a lot and wobble about like a drunk, so my wheels make me safe, so that I can have a more independent life doing what I love. I am determined to stay well and I am finally accepting that this is the way to help me stay well. It’s a tiny ‘price’ to pay in the grand scheme of things x Thank you for being so positive and so inspirational x

My feet never hurt, which I remember the would do if I was on my feet all day, I can also wear shoes that would be painful because I'm not going to have to use them for walking. I can carry quite a bit of stuff behind and under my wheelchair that might have given me aching shoulders and back. It means no one ever says anything about using a blue badge space (though it did only happen once when I was walking more).

When I use to use my cane and than latter on my walker; everybody waited for me to catch up. Now that I have my power chair; I am waiting for them. lol For me the greatest thing, is first, not being isolated, and second, I am not totally exhausted and in pain when I come home. I ended up when I used my walker I was so exhausted/pain, that I gave up going out for year and half. I got my power chair, and I cannot put into words of any sort, how amazing it feels.

the BIG upside of being in a wheelchair i'd presume is the ability to be mobile at all or to be mobile w/ limited pain! and as somebody w/ no mobility aids who prolly needs one, i can see it being good so that people won't doubt that you're ACTUALLY disabled gah

Thank you so much Gem. I really like you're positive attitude towards things. It helps me see things in a better lights. As you know I walk with a walker and I possibly am headed to a wheel chair. I think the thing I see as being the biggest benefit for me is being able to get out more. It is so difficult for me because I can't walk very fast and i get tired quickly. So it would be a big positive for me to be able to go out and not get fatigued so quickly. I could actually grocery shop.

I'm a new wheelchair user, and I've paused as instructed. 5. I'm in less pain throughout the day than I would be if I tried to walk. 4. I'm tall. I was about 177cm before my spinal injury. I lost part of my spine, so I was supposed to lose height, I'm not sure how much. Now, I can reach things that are lower to the ground without pain! 3. Going down ramps is fun. 2. I can accessorize and make my chair cute. 1. The most important one: I'm free! I can get in my chair and go almost wherever I would like. I'm not restricted to my bed.

Benefits I see from using a wheelchair... -always having somewhere to sit that no one else is allowed to take over 😂 (and it’s more comfortable than most regular chairs!) -way less wear and tear on shoes and not having to worry about blisters and comfort when going long distances -got me from bedbound to much more freedom and saving energy from not having to stand to do everything (specific to my illness) -it can be fun -giving little kids I know rides on my lap lol. they love it -not having to justify my disability as much sometimes... although I do still get a lot of disbelief because I “look healthy” which is a whole other major issue. But it does kind of tip people off to the fact that I am not able bodied and may need accommodations more so than when I don’t use a mobility aid, so there’s less pressure on me -going down hills lol -it’s made me more aware of this side of disability justice advocacy and I can lend my own voice and experiences to this

You're husband needs to really come to terms with it too. It's a lot easier when your partner has your back. Maybe he can watch this video or others like it, and really understand that this may be the only way you can go out for x amount of time, if not every time, any more. Help him and yourself adjust bit by bit, and he will also understand that you are still you, and that the chair will help you be a more active fun you.

It's good to try and exercise those muscles that otherwise don't get exercise...but it's not good to make your life a martyrdom. I can walk maybe 30metres, badly. It's slow and makes me look like someone who's drunk! I could maybe use a one of those ambulatory things you can sit on when you get tired. It would take me about 40 mins- 1 hr to get to the supermarket + the same back again...and I'd be wiped out by the time I got back. I can get there and back in 20-30 minutes and feel like I just had a light workout, giving me more time and energy to do things I enjoy! I was in tears the first time I went out in my wheelchair, with conflicting thoughts about feeling a slight fraud initially but knowing it made sense, having progressive disease....and probably a degree of self-pity too! Now it's simply a no-brainer.

Benefits of being in a wheelchair could be- you don’t get tired/sore feet when out, people may be more inclined to help you out if they see you struggling to reach something, disability services are more likely to grant you help (compared to hidden disabilities) or award you benefits to help with things you need.

I haven't gotten my wheels yet because I nor the doctors know what really happened with my back. I have serious immense pain in my back shooting down my legs and difficulty walking and moving my legs. I am 18 and moves like I'm a 90 year old lady 😂. I am right now waiting for my results from my MR scan I did. I've had back problems for at least 10 to 13 years and it's gradually worsening AND because of my ADHD/DCD I've never really functioned like everybody else my age. Well my benefits with a wheelchair is that I can be more independent, get a job, drive a 🚗, walk my dog without lying on the ground looking like a corpse when I finally get home after a short but long and painful walk, relieve my back from a tiny bit of pain and spare what energy I can.

Kent Rubert I also follow a channel called Sitting Pretty. She’s in a power chair. I’m looking for more power chair users who have videos also. Gem is great and her videos have really helped me.

Hahahah yeah!!! But you find that when you watch shows from abroad. I actually LOVE Neighbours (and Australian soap) and the Aussies hate it over there ;) (well a lot of them do. ;)

I don't think these are benefits of being in a wheelchair. I think they are benefits of having a wheelchair vs not having one.
