Definitely bring this back as a series! I love budget commander content. I suggest a reanimator style deck next, you get to use some cool cards that not alot of people have seen before especially if you're on a tighter budget.
Love ya Dev, Always a Bright morning when you drop a new Vid! I've chewed through most of your video library on my drives for work so, Don't quit now! 😂
I think part of what makes a good budget commander is one that works with cheap tech. Like if you ever see a commander and it reminds you of some draft or sealed fun you had and might could use that theme for a deck. Like Kyler, right? Selesnya counters? That’s almost every other set, so you know the pieces for it are affordable and available.
Im so happy you brought up Vega! I thought the exact same thing with jumpstart, suspend, and cast spells from the top of the deck, as well as your opponent’s deck! I dont do the lockout combo, but it mine is a token control strategy.
One of the things players coming into the format means: for Commanders that were popular 5-10 years ago, there are a ton of new cards that will be perfect for the deck that weren't in the original deck techs... so new picks can still make those older Commanders relevant, interesting, and cool.
Excited to see you enjoy EDH deckbuilding dude. Also, gotta share the 🖤❤for Bladewing the Risen. Built it about 5 years ago and it's been my favourite and most powerful deck since! I didn't go the infinite combo route, just cheating out dragons from the graveyard.. It's the coolest 😄
Super happy to see growth in this channel that has me mightily ENGAGED! Don’t have a favorite budget commander per say, but whenever they release the commander precons I look at the alternate commanders in those for cool ideas. Obeka was an example and those alternate commanders are often under $1! Great content Dev!
Dev!! Welcome to the infectious world of Commander. If you're looking for a really fun budget option, consider Pauper Commander too. Fun challenge that of which it seems like you'd enjoy the spin.
Underrated commander decks I have according to EDHREC: - FBLTHP the lost at 494: Combo out and draw out your deck, make infinite mana to cast infinite Capsize, loop spells with Archaeomancer, etc... - Kamahl Fist of Krosa at 334: Mana dork tribal, overwhelm for days or destroy opponents lands :P
As someone who has been playing EDH for over a decade I love budget decks especially since WotC really started pumping out the uncommon legends there is some really fun options now
one deck i've been playing on arenas brawl is radagast the brown, which embodies most of green. idk why it only has 300 decks on edhrec rn but i highly recommend trying it out.
"Infinite combo and can lock people out of playing magic, I don't know why more people aren't playing this?" I feel like you answered your own question there bud.
Awesome picks Dev! I’m a huge fan of Rivaz of the Claw, which uses a ton of the Rakdos Dragons you pointed out for bladewing, hoarding broodlord is sneaky good!
Tawnos is my favorite commander deck I built. When I opened up a brothers war pack with Urzas apprentice as a foil rare, I said I'm building him right now. Birds, Beast and the mutate mechanic, OH MY what FUN I have.
Ey yo Dev, first time, long time. One little trick I've picked up for making Magic vids is that on Scryfall, if you choose "Download PNG Image" under "Images and Data", you should get a file with transparent corners, so the little white edges won't show up. I love the vids, keep it up!
SBMTG + EDH = awesome, looking forward to more vids on the topic! In EDH I tend to try and build off-meta decks, and build on a budget, so this is perfect! Great content as always.
Lock combos are great in 1v1 - but in multiplayer for a "fun-oriented" format, you run the risk of the feels bads for opponents not getting you invited to the next game night. Just so you know, it's worth mentioning in your "rule zero" conversation with your pod.
A good number of these fell out of favor years back like bladewing and ones that are newer just started getting their better support like Vega, and cus of how this are going most new commander that doesn’t do over the top things or are head of a percon doing get as much time in the sun. Still nice to see someone standing up and saying “hey, these are cool and you should revisit them” to the the oddballs of the format
I kind of want to make a Varolz deck because I would really like a Golgari themed deck that isn't simply reanimator nor torkens, but plays mostly with the idea of the Golgari of resilience and scavenging, as well as "beneficial death" so to speak. I would also like to make a "Graverobber" deck but I think I'd have to go Sultai for that to also include spell theft from the Yard.
I love Vega and Jalira, I’ve always wanted to build around them but never have. But I don’t think Bladewing and Cursed Mirror works. You’ll have to choose a target on Bladewing’s ETB and he’s not in the graveyard yet when the ETB triggers so he won’t be an available target. I’m totally digging the dive into EDH and I hope you continue! I also have a wittigo somewhere or another 😂
It works because legend rule doesn't use the stack, it's a state based action (sba). As soon as two copies are on the field one goes, then any etbs trigger as normal. I know, it's confusing as hell cuz sbas aren't usually required knowledge, but yeah this combo works and there are quite a few others that rely on this interaction as well.
Dev: You should play Bladewing! It's a dragon and dragons are cool, right? Me with my Ur Dragon deck: Do tell. This does look like an interesting series though. Highlighting unusual commanders is definitely something I'd like to see more of.
Nooooo Dev! Dont do this to me! I too am a Standard player who has recently started looking at Commander, ive spent the last 2 weeks spending an insane amount of time crafting my first budget deck (ive gotten it down to 130 cards 😅), and now i need to look at all these commanders too :P
Tawnos is fantastic! I had a build using mutate creatures, which gets interesting when you copy the mutated creature onto the same creature and get 3 mutate triggers at the same time.
I built a tawnos deck and it’s pretty fun when you play a crater hoof and get an extra craterhoof. Also I really thought he was going to say this deck is not to be toyed with lol.
I have a Vega with kpool... But I removed Lavinia because it's too mean... Instead I added archmage emeritus for drawing 2 cards. Both spells you cast from your hand and from kpool are both casted, so you draw both times..
Try jhoira of the ghitu it's one of my favorite. And haven't seen many people use her. Suspend and protect the suspended cards with counter spells. It's fun putting obliterate on suspend and watch every lose their minds
7:59 Merfolk tribal being forgotten once again. Yes I know this video was made before Lost Caverns of Ixalan and yes I made a merfolk tribal deck before LCI was even teased.
Wow I am an old school player I get commander. But am honestly wanting to give a few of these decks a try especially for cheap. Wish emperor was still a thing though
Come to the dark side brother! It's 👍👍👍 I hope you have a great experience. I followed you when I started and left standard but I love seeing ya. I hope you keep learning and I can't wait to have a newbie perspective on an increasingly expensive game
just built a nymris deck as a flash tribal. pretty fun playing on everyone else's turn. Kind of a struggle figuring out how to win with that without going the CEDH route which has been a bit of a weakness. Having a game ender is an issue.
Given Dev's choice for 1 and 2, and how much time he spent talking about the combo and lockout potential, it seems like he's missing out on how much the casual/budget commander community dislikes both of those things and are actively reasons why many of the folks in that demographic avoid these commanders. Like, I'd agree that it's silly for so many folks to feel this way, but there's a whole culture about it. And then obviously the more competitive/less care about budget folks often are doing these types of things more efficiently but with pricy cards. So stuff lik Vega and Bladewing just have a smaller subset of players that they scratch the itch for.
Wendigo is almost certainly some take on a yeti of some kind or another, any of your run-of-the-mill humanoid snow dwelling bigfoot, always with white shaggy hair.
I'm glad you finally joined the commander boat but I'm sad you did it at such a lousy time. You are an oldschool player so I'm positive you would have loved to experience what OG EDH and later early Commander stood for in the beginning. Instead you're stuck with this over-monetized, direct-to-commander, legend overcrowded, universes beyond infected shadow of what the format actually intended to be. On that note since you don't have the baggage of dozens of decks already built I strongly suggest you make the jump to pre-EDH ASAP instead.
