My fiance and I discussed moving to different states. He mentioned South Carolina. I did some research and fell in love. I settled on moving to Greenville. The only thing stopping me was raising the money to move. I'm having second thoughts after reading some of the comments from residents who were born and raised there. You have a beautiful state but it's the people that make it feel like home. Just remember this. You were born and raised in South Carolina but your ancestors came from other countries and settled there. I live in a tourist town but I welcome anyone who wants to move here as a friend I haven't met yet. You should do the same.
Yes, we were also considering it until watching a realtor/resident born and raised in all of these areas give his top 10 reasons for NOT moving there. After hearing him out, we're not going. He's right.
Yes but think about the families being forced out of their homes or tricked out of land that has been been in their familes for generations.....just to put up a shopping centers or apartment buildings that they could never afford to live in.
WE were very lucky when we found out townhouse in West Ashley..We are 10 minutes from downtown and work so we are not going anywhere due to how the real estate market is around here..
The housing in Dorchester and Berkeley is not cheap! $300,000 is more like medium price and growing rapidly. Schools way over crowded. Not enough infrastructure so driving is horrendous traffic. No public transportation and no viable plans for it.
Born and raised here in SC…I’m between spartanburg and greenville…just how many more subdivisions can you put here…it’s taking land from the wildlife here..I’m serious..never mind the traffic..i can live with that..it’s heartbreaking knowing that all the creatures we share this planet with…are losing their homes and their food sources..And then as we take the trees from all this world …will we be next to lose more than our homes …possibly out lives!!
We came to SC in 1981 because of my husband's job & settled in Mt Pleasant. It is now Mt. Unpleasant, trees are cut without thought about the effects, green spaces are disappearing, huge houses are built on small lots so new subdivisions are crammed full- wildlife such as deer and wild turkeys & birds in general have lost their habitats - people complain about deer eating their gardens that used to be the woods where the deer lived. And worse are older black neighborhoods are being destroyed by the greed of builders. The traffic is horrible. A beloved 300 year old live oak- the Meeting Tree was just cut down so a turning lane could be added. If you enjoy heavy traffic, highways getting wider, overbuilding, disregard for the environment. If you enjoy rain, there is flooding in Charleston when it rains -especially during high tide- making it difficult to get to work, this is the place for you. If you like the exciting, keep you on the edge of your seat you will experience during hurricane season & if you like the excitement of a hurricaine that also brings tornadoes, hitting you, - and leaves you without electricity or drinkable water for days along then this is the place for you. You will get a glimpse of beauty and the next day it will be gone. You are more likely to have neighbors from Ohio and to hear a New York accent than to hear the soft, distinct Charleston accent.

@Queen Anastasia The HELL with that!!! They're gonna keep moving down here because of the cost of living. If you DON'T like it, you can ALWAYS leave! NOBODY is making you stay here.
My family arrived in Charleston in July of 1735 and that’s where I was born and raised. I left after college and spent 30 years in the military. I no longer live in SC and when I visit Charleston I don’t recognize the place.
Somethings are obviously different, but the great regentrification that occurred after Hugo in 1989, has greatly improved the area. When I first visited in 1976, it was very rundown, though very affordable. The sad thing (for natives) is that it has lost some of its small town charm, though it is still regularly voted the friendliest city in America! The food scene is drastically improved.
I'm sick of watching all beautiful fields and farmland that used to surround Spartanburg area be torn up for another storage unit facility or apartment complex or subdivision. I have lived here for over 20 years and seen this area change before my very eyes and not for the better.
With you in your dismay, I am appalled by the lack of respect for our supposedly protected wetlands & our shrinking green spaces. Don't elect developers. I wish I was a multi millionaire so I could buy up land so developers couldn't rape the land. Fewer trees results in increased temperatures & more flooding. - look it up if you don't believe those facts. God help us.
It's called "progress" and as long as people have the freedom to pursue building their own lives as they want and are not restricted by the Federal Government, more home building and development will continue. I would rather see new building happening than continued deterioration and decline that is rampant in Democrat controlled cities and states. South Carolina must stay strong and not cave to that mindset if it is to survive and prosper!
I live in East Tennessee and people are moving here in droves. Used to be a nice area but too many people have moved here and it's been ruined just like the Charleston area. They keep building and eating up all the land, widening the roads to accommodate the influx of traffic. Once a nice area being turned into a nightmare right before my very eyes. Heartbreaking
I’ve lived in Utah, Colorado, California, North Dakota, and now Texas. One thing remains the same, they are all growing!! I understand locals wish it weren’t so but people are still having children and children grow up and need jobs and want families of their own. Everywhere is growing rapidly!!!
Lived in Greenville,sc all my life. We are full.Traffic has tripled.Red lights mean stop if you feel like it.The roads are constantly being widened.Wrecks constantly shut down I85.Nice place to visit, but then go back home.
I Love Greenville but when I go to the airport I hate the traffic of the construction in Spatinburg and to get downtown I would take 385 and 185 I dont take 185 allt bc the toll but there usually busy alot but greenvile Great city
I live in Aiken. The real estate market has gone crazy here since Covid. We are an equestrian community and buyers seem to be attracted to the area because of the larger lots/available land.
@@shelbytaylor7512, depends how far out from town you want to be and which side of town. If you don’t mind going to Edgefield County, there are still some affordable options.
I have been in South Carolina most of my life from little river to folly beach. Charleston is packed compared to just even a few years ago. 2020 maxed us out.

Just to be clear and I'm really speaking for those of us born and raised here... WE ARE FULL IN SOUTH CAROLINA... YES THE ENTIRE STATE... ESPECIALLY DORCHESTER COUNTY!!!!;📢📢📢🔊
Yes. I aggree tired of Northerns complaining how South Carolina is not like (insert any Dem run shithole state) Dont come here to screw our state like the one you left.
You obviously don’t know much about Greenville. First, GHS has been Prisma Health for the past 3 years and then took over Columbia hospitals. Clemson is not considered part of Greenville. It’s almost an hour away.
That is true I lived there for over 30 years and it has changed so much just in the past 10 years..When I moved to Greenville it was just a small city and it was beautiful back then..I can remember when you might see 20 cars on I-385 and now it is bumper to bumper during rush hour..
To be fair, I wasn't fleeing my home state of Illinois when I arrived here around 25 years ago. We've been inundated with northerners in the past couple decades, and It's been a looooong time since I've gotten the "you're not from around here" comments upon hearing my accent. I kinda wish I had those days back. A lot of the people I know fleeing from Illinois absolutely know they are refugees and the only desire they might have to make it like back "home" would just to be to introduce some more food.
We go to Myrtle Beach for Summer Vacation every year since 2015. I must say in just 5 years, I have noticed the amount of housing down there growing tremendously. It is a very long area. North Myrtle Beach all the way down to Murrels Inlet is like 50 miles long. Conway is a popular town which is like 17 miles inland from there. I love all the palm trees every where. I believe it is the most northern city where you can see lots of palm trees. I did notice last year because of the pandemic lots of restaurants were already closed down. Being an area that survives on tourism and summer vacationers, I don't think it would be a good choice for people looking to make a career in the area. However, for retirement, or people who are able to earn a living remotely this would be a great choice. The beaches here are so clean and top notch compared to what I am use to more north.
It’s just how the way of the world is going. I live in UT and people from TX and CA are flooding here like crazy. The world is becoming more and more populated.
@@jessw31178 It is not so much that population is exploding (the US birth rate is below replacement now), but WHERE people live is changing, so Sunbelt places in particular, are growing. Which one is cheaper to buy a small house? Fort Mill or Rock Hill? No need of good schools but diversity is the one I'm looking for & need your honest opinions lol thank you!!👍👍
@@deehope9477 Hi Dee! Rock Hill is a little less expensive and more diverse. Fort Mill is more expensive as there is more northern migration (with northern money) happening there and it is a little closer to Charlotte (just a few interstate exits closer on I-77). Values in Rock Hill are climbing, especially in some of the more recently developed areas but there are definitely some older areas that are undervalued. I live outside of Rock Hill between Rock Hill and York and absolutely love it here! Let me know if you have any other questions.
Really misleading information in this video. I'm from SC, living in the Greenville area. First, home prices are skyrocketing in Greenville. AND Rock Hill is only a 35 minute drive from Uptown Charlotte if you plan to go at 3 a.m.!!! Otherwise it is over an hour.
If you had folks moving where you lived and you knew they did to their little paradise what’s gonna happen to yours if they move here - you’d whine too!! But we call it like we see it. And we’ve seen enough!!
I was surprised Hilton Head was not on the list. Good summary of these desirable destinations. Charleston is one of America's real gems, with totally unique architecture and a great food scene. It has really spiraled up in housing prices with all the northern retirees. Outside of oppressive heat/humidity for 3-4 months, it is as desirable a place to live as any in the country!
We live about 10 miles south of Rock Hill. Its constantly growing with new businesses, hotels, apartments. Been living in SC for 20 years now. We moved here from Mississippi for my husband’s job. I love the weather here any time of the year except during the hot humid months. My son works at Ross Distribution for about 5 years now. They are constantly giving workers raises to keep them on. They have good benefits.
Yeah I think the Natives said that about the British in Charleston when they “moved there” too. I have no problem with anyone moving anywhere, just don’t try and claim something that isn’t yours. The country didn’t belong to the British, neither does SC belong to any certain person in this country whether they’re born there or not. I was told that back when I moved to SC. I had to point out that I have a great grandmother buried outside Spartanburg so whether I was “born there” or not, I had roots.
Too crowded in Charleston, Dorchester and Berkeley counties. They need to get some type of rail system to go back and forth to travel daily to and from work. They need to alleviate the road traffic. They need buses traveling to each county throughout the day for work trave. Congestion of traffic is too much daily. Light rail and a bus system is needed to connect counties.
I just moved to Laurens a few months ago and I'm liking it! Update...apparently I'm not the only one. The beautiful tract of woods out back of our property was just clear cut. Every beautiful tree, gone into the big chipper. Heartbreaking! The displaced creatures of the forest are in our yard needing something to eat now 😪
@@sandihealey1845 We found out that the owner of the land had passed away and his heirs sold the trees for lumber which is in great demand. Now the trees are starting to grow back and we hope that will stay this way 🙏
The upstate, Oconee County, is getting too damn crowded. Keep on going, retirees. I was born here and I liked it better when our area was less inhabited by newcomers. Plus, the beauty that drew folks here is being destroyed by so-called progress.
We visited the Mauldin area where we had lived for almost 22 years and honestly we were shocked at what had been done in 2 years time..We lived out in the country and now it is all subdivisions just insane how much traffic will be trying to navigate those tiny back roads..We have no regrets moving away even though Charleston has its own issues with being bombarded with Yankees at least we have some room to breath compared to the Upstate right now..
I moved here two years ago because Charleston traffic is so out of control. Rent is so priced out. Born and raised their...now it's happening here in Seneca... Oconee Country.
I feel the need to apologize here. I am from Massachusetts and approaching retirement. Found a beautiful house in Pawleys Island. Fell in love and bought it. That being said I get why locals would resent people like me. Those of us moving in are raising prices and pricing out the locals. Sorry about that.
Moved to Greenville, SC in October 2021 from the Los Angeles area of California, and my wife and I love it. Really glad we made the move! Nicest people of anywhere I’ve ever been in the US. I’m lucky to call it home!
Vote republican or go back to California. We have thousands of people from California moving into Arizona and trashing it by voting democrat. Why do people move from democrat-controlled cities only to vote for the same policies they moved from?
