Part 1 of 3 on my top for this Montero! I've covered most of the details on this build in other videos so now it's time to talk about which ones are my favorites.. any guesses??
Dear Montana Tony we have created a real Montero based on your advice from the bottom up and it is the most capable 4 x 4 in Asia right now love to send you a pic its a total beast after my customized land Rover Defender going up extreme and down is such a breeze in the Montero. I mean chassis and tech after upgrading its just so easy, which after limited fixed diff and lots stuff breaking down its heaven believe me to drive and with a 2.8 inch lift backed up with EMU Old Boy shocks makes you fear nothing thanks buddy you inspired this rebuild. After driveling a Land Rover for 30 years this works out but a Hummer vs Land Rover in a Iraq is a clear winner on the mountain passes of northern Iraq my Land Rover beat the shit out of a Hummer and I survived to tell the tale and its a good one.Cheers Mate
@@montanamontero couple questions if you don't mind? 1. Is there a compatible supercharger for this gen? 2. Can you get an arb or similar bumper to fit with lift/larger tires/offset? Looking for a more filled out front end look. 3. Do ya think the 2003-2006 are much better than the previous version 2000-2002? Thanks!
Thanks again for another video, looks like y'all are getting out and enjoying the awesome views up there I have the 3.8 in our Montero so I have to ask what you have under the hood and more important how did it do in high elevation, and we do a lot of thinking the same cause no matter how big of a lift you have or just stock that under armour is so important, lol and the fridge your right about the fridge there a great investment just think some of these cooler's for sale can run up around 200 bucks and no matter how much you spend that ice only last 2 maybe 3 days if lucky than you have to drain the cooler get more ice move everything around the cooler is good for a day trip but that fridge is great for that Overland trip. Again thank you for videos and remember be safe and Overland safely!!!!!
I have the 3.8 as well, and it handles elevation really well, especially with the re-gear. I have to be patient with it when doing big passes at high speeds, but it will almost always do the speed limit. usually when i'm up this high i'm in 4lo and going pretty slow offroading so this was a fun new test. didn't skip a beat and my engine temps were a cool 187 (which is what i run all the time)
I would like to thank you from Sri Lanka I followed your modifications but I have done so much better I cant send photos but really apricate your guidance.; Cheers the Mee family
Nice video! How many miles were on your Montero when you purchased it and how many miles do you put on it a year? How hard is it to find the 4.9 gear parts in a junkyard? Go Bobcats!
I purchased it with 145,000 miles.. now it has just under 220,000. We put about 20k per year on it. The 4.9s are out there, just requires some intentional looking, and sometimes a drive to go pull them. GO CATS!
I'm at 2:50 and I wanna know, if your head-unit is there, where did you take the A/C panel? Asking because I'd love to have a Sony head-unit on my Gen-3 without removing the stock screen. And you've got a new subscriber here! Amazing stuff!
The climate control selector is mounted the same as a 1 din radio. If you take out the lower storage compartment you can bring the climate controls down allowing for you to mount a 2 din up top
I have a gen 2.5 with the winter package and I love it, but lately I have been eyeing a 3rd gen. Something about the style and the 3.8l. The only thing i hate is the lack of hp upgrades.
Audio wise, the well designed and insulated Japanese built truck helped the hardest part, semi quiet interior soundproofing. Why didn't you put that JL sub into the stock subwoofer cavity?
the sub that goes in that spot originally is an "open air" sub and the JL is meant for an enclosure. so it sounded like garbage in the factory spot. in the end it was just easier to leave it in the designed box than seal off that quarter panel
I've seen in a number of your videos you mention the Bilstein 5100's you have. Can you give the part #'s front & rear? They don't make a Montero specific 5100 so I'm thinking it must be one of the 5125 custom length universal fit. Wanted to add them to my 2005 Limited. Thanks in advance. Great videos. Doing a similar build.
@@montanamontero Thanks for the response. It's all good. I really prefer the 5100's so plan to remove and measure mine and get the "universal fit" version that are much beefier and generally have better travel too.
So, I am interested in one. I'm guessing on the East Coast they may have rusted frames but I'm going to try to find one. I'm not excited about the horrible gas mileage but the Montero Sports just don't seem as good and 4runners are way overpriced and the Xterra cabin is too small for me. Are there any parts that are really hard to find?
most parts are findable. lots of them in junk yards still and even some new old stock. companies like luso overland have done the hard work of sourcing most of the common parts for us so that's an awesome resource
Great Videos, I just picked up an 03 LTD and wondering if you would be willing to consult on repairs/upgrades? I figure paying you for a few hours worth of advice will save thousands in the long run..thx
my 3rd gen tends to run at 195-200 on a regular basis and when im up high in elevation it goes up to 210-230 and the gauge goes up…. i was wondering how yours runs a constant 187? let me know, thx
Hello brother. I've been looking into buying a Montero or 4runner. 4runners are outrageously priced right now, onteros are reasonable. How are the transmissions? Do they last over 250k miles?
My auto trannys just died @ 133k miles , dropped sump for a filter change after refusing to engage drive , & there was half washers & lots of metal fragments in there & sticking hydraulic valves . Gotta do the htf fluid every 30k like he said . A replacement box sorted it out & got the trusty gen 3 back & running, don't neglect those oil changes fools
haha i've had a lot of people ask. it's too custom, with the drilling and cutting of the frame, to make much sense to reproduce. plus i'm a total amateur, so my skills aren't as good as they look on the internet.
Great video effort but some problems. The factory wheel offset is set as it is to load the wheel bearings properly, as in straight up and down on both races while traveling down the road. Changing to a wide stance not only interferes with the bodywork (by literally hitting it and you trimmed it), the entire front end engineered by the factory geometry is ruined too and the poor bearings are in for a quick death. Logic wise, having an extra 3" outrigger may have saved your bacon on the extreme trail situation you had but the pain and wear of the other 99.9% of the time?, not good advice. Also you did not pickup 2 MPG by diff swapping in a 3.9, you made the kid move of buying big bubbles (giant wheels) 1st, took/understood the reality, then diff swapped getting back 2 MPG.
thanks for the thoughts. People always make the ball joint and wheel bearing argument about wide wheels.. and frankly, i haven't experienced or seen first hand any of the negative effects. i check my ball joints and wheel bearings after every offroad trip and they are fine. plus i'd rather replace those then flip my car on it's side. to your 2nd point. i bought big wheels and tires to go offroad.. not because i'm a "kid". sure there are mall crawlers out there, but this isn't one of them, i use every inch of tire and wheel when i'm out on the trail, and it's worth the extra work to make them fit.
