In this video i go over some of the things to keep in mind when shopping for a gen 3 montero. I also cover some of the differences between the model years.
The XLS with the Moonroof and Rear A/C had the Touring Package, they also had a little bit nicer suede type seat covers. The 2001-2002 XLS/Touring Package had the LSD in the rear. 2003-2006 Did have the XLS available, and with the touring package it had the same upgrades except no LSD. I sold them new back in 2002-2004, had both the 2002 XLS and the 2003 XLS both with the Touring Package. Sorry I had to let the 2003 go back in 2007. I had Ironman springs and KYB struts back then, running 285/75/16s! Awe crap, now I want another one. Great Video!
Great vid, thanks for sharing. This model specific buyers guide info with the different years and trims is brilliant. Hoping to get into a gen3 very soon.
Perfect timing! Im gonna check a 2003 montero these days and probably gonna take it home. Just 144k km on it, im down here in mexico. Cheers man thanks for the videos! 🌞
@@montanamonteroHello calling you from Perth Wastern australia I got a 2002 pajero nm model coomonwealth limited edition as you have described is a very good car but no sunroof and leather seats
I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOUUUUU! THANK YOU THANK YOUUU! I really appreciate the time you put into your videos and they are so much help. Please keep coming out with more gen 3 videos ! ❤️
It would be great if you posted normal maintenance and troubleshooting videos for the 3rd Gen. Your video's are incredibly helpful for us non-mechanic types
I have 2001 Mitsubishi montero limited i comes with a 5 speed transmission with the 3.5L! Now the Montero xls comes with a 4 speed transmission for 2001 and 2002! The limited is 5 speed transmission!! Great video!!
Well, I wrecked my '98 so now I'm looking at a Gen 3 replacement. It's FAR easier to find a Gen 3 than another Gen 2.5 :/ As usual, you're one of just a couple here on RU-vid that I come to for info. Thanks! FYI throttle in my '98 stuck to the floor, so work inspection of the throttle cable into your maintenance.
I got so lucky , every single item you mention as a very common fail mine doesn’t have, I scored a 1owner that was garaged all it’s life , the original owner used to clean suspension parts and diff constantly
Its so few of them on sale in the US, i just found 10 of them nationwide and 4 of them are junkyard cars. When the first black one in decent condition pops up its mine
Great vid man!! Been window shopping Gen 3s and it seems that their abundance is a lot smaller than the Montero sports, at least in my area. But I love the breakdown you provided. Montero Sport vid next? 👀😂
You said about swapping the 4.9 ratio transfer case into a 2003-2006. As the 4.9 box is manually actuated would that mean needing to swap the electronic actuators for the manual mechanism? Or are the older manual boxes compatible with the electronic actuators? Super useful video btw, I’ve had my eye on a gen1 shogun but after seeing a few of these modded gen3s it’s got me thinking.. Also you said about the electronic traction control motors going bad on those newer models, if I did go with swapping in an LSD do you know if it’s possible to run the older more reliable vacuum brake boosters and do away with the traction control? Have you had any experience with swapping an LSD into one with factory traction control? It feels like the LSD would lock up when the tc is doing its thing and screw with things? The picture on the dash kinda suggests the transfer box has a centre differential? Is that right or is it permanently locked, sending drive to the front axle, and when you shift to 4wd, it locks in the hubs? I’m coming from a Land Rover defender which has all 4 hubs permanently “locked”, always 4wd, but you lock the centre (usually open) diff to use what people would normally call 4wd.
Thanks for the info in the video. I've been looking for a fun off roader to go with and saw that there's quite a few gen 3s in my area. Any experience with towing? I'd like to be able to use it to tow my project Miata to track events.
i tow with mine pretty often, it will haul a car without too much issue, the power is there, but you will notice it for sure. you have to leave plenty of room for braking though since the brakes don't really keep up
Hey, good video. Is there any chance that you can share me the part number for the brake booster? I am only able to find the acumulator, but not the entire booster.
The sunroof fix is two bolts that unscrew themselves, there's videos on it, I've had 10 of these over the years and even with 13 miles per gallon it's grin Worthy, have an O2 limited with the five-speed at and sunroof mine uses no oil with 170,000 miles
Thanks man, great vid! Recently started searching for a Montero here in CO, yet to find any that are priced right. Definitely no $500 dollar specials like you've been able to pick up in the past. Must say, can't imagine dropping a quart of oil per 1k miles. Makes me want to shy away from a Gen 3.
We have a 03 that doesn't use oil, never has but if you change the crank, cam seals and valve cover gaskets when changing the timing belt it keeps oil leaks at a minimum. Sunroof is another subject but as long as you don't open it it's not a problem and the 4wd all wd is great for sand snow.
Monterros/Pajeros are increasing in price everywhere. People are realising that it’s a great machine and tough as! And you are not getting ripped off with Toyota tax. But Mitsubishi tax is creeping up. Grab one while you can.
@@montanamontero yeah I’m in TX. I did pick it up from some place in Houston from someone who inherited the car. So could possibly from Mexico but I can’t remember when I check the Carfax when I got it over 2 years ago.
Great vid, great info. These variations get even wilder as you cross borders. I have a 2001 | 3.5 | 4-spd | Electric T-case | 4.3 | LSD | No sun-roof | No Leather Seats. It's also referred to an Exceed. Not forgetting the diesel engines are way more than petrol (in Kenya). Also, would you mind letting me know if swapping to 5-spd Auto transmission is a straight fit? I've always felt the 5-speed is better, but I don't know what I need to change in my 4-speed to make that modification. Thanks.
let me share some light here,,,, in 2002 the montero came with a 5 speed auto and a 3.5 engine, also the front end in the 2002 is the same as the 2003 when it comes with the 5 speed transmission, i ownm that truck myself, and it was made in may 2001.
I like the 2003+ V6 3.8L motor versions we have a few of in the USA. I have two with over 225,000 miles, all original, no rebuilding. I've had all previous generations also, with high miles. They are better than Toyota, Nissan (way better), USA brands, and any European competitors I've driven, tested or owned. One thing to do when present ASAP: remove the secondary intake butterflies that are in the intake plenum, or fasten them with permanent thread locker or via welding. I just remove them as they do nothing. From factory, they commonly come loose and damage the cylinders or valves, around 135,000 to 160,000 miles, some sooner. Ask me how discovered this? 😆 And spray any bushings with coconut or similar food oil, and suspension bolts with light anti-rust oil once a year. Will save your ass in climates with salts.
Nice video.I have a 2001 montero xls and have a question. I recently changed the power steering fluid with "Prestone Power Steering Fluid Plus Stop Leak". I also saw online that some owners use "Valvoline MaxLife Multi-Vehicle Full Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid ". Do need to change the P/S fluid again or keep the one that I already used? Thanks.
Some people have really strong opinions about this… but personally I haven’t noticed any notable difference when I’ve used generic PS fluid. Although I usually advise against stop leak projects because they can clog things up
I have a 2003, looks similar to the 2006 in this video. Are you able to tell what type of tires and rims are on the 2006 in the video. Thank you for these videos. You are awesome.
Hi Do you need some great lighting for your car to help you better driving, off-road? We're the pro auto lighting company for nearly 20 year and we're looking for sponsorship!
Do you know what could cause no lights to show? I have an 02 limited and no lights come on and the transfer case doesn't shift. I checked and swapped cluster bulbs with good ones, so it's not that.. Thanks in advance!
Hey there. I wasn't sure where I'm supposed to ask this question so I ask here. Do you happen to know code P0432, P0421 and P0171 on a 2006 limited Montero? What could be wrong? I'm thinking about buying it and it has this codes. Thanks in advance for any information given
Is the Tiptronic 5-speed transmissions in the Gen 3 the same transmission found in the Gen 2.5 (GDI) Pajeros? If so I’ll stay away from those GDIs then. They have 40 more hp but at the cost of being the first publicly available direct injection vehicle; it has some kinks to say the least. If the transmission is also going to have some woes, best to stay away from it entirely.
@@montanamontero yeah I’ve got a JDM importer very close to where I live so we get a lot of GDIs posted on Facebook marketplace etc. haven’t heard great things about the longevity and complexity of the DOHC 3.5 6G74 GDI, but performance wise they are superior in every way. Curious if you’d ever look into the 3.8L 6G75 conversion for Gen 2 Monteros. Apparently pretty straight forward. It sounds like the most ideal platform is the Gen 2.5 with the SOHC engine but all you need is the block and head out of a Galant (380) and everything else from the stock SOHC 3.5 basically bolts ups. Uses factory ECU. I think the factory fuel mapping can work but might get knocking if you use anything other than 91/93. The biggest hurtle is the 3.8L comes with a knock sensor factory while the SOHC never came with one and is optimized on 87 octane. So a reflash would probably be necessary if you don’t want to have to run premium all the time.
Hello, how are you MonteroMontana, I bought the LLovels suspension set in lusoOverland, the same one you used in the black montero to raise it, now I am facing a problem, my vehicle bends or breaks the stabilizer bar links, do I have to replace them with one in particular? There are 3 pairs that have damaged me I follow you from Panama Regards
Are you in the USA? If so then that it is a rare one! I would guess you have the 4.9 gears AND the LSD. A sure way to tell is to get under the back of your car and look at the rear diff cover. It will say the ratio and if it has the LSD on there.
3.2 diesel. Legendary. Oil changes at 7500kms and EGR delete keeps the soot out of the manifold. Easy to work on too. Replace timing chain tensioner and guide. Real quick easy job and not expensive in parts. Good oil and good filters rewards you with epic reliability as with any car really.
@@chrro466 I might buy Pajero one day with that 3.2 DiD engine (most common in Finland). Prices are going lower because Finland taxes diesel with extra tax (diesel tax for Pajero is about 950€ - 1200€ per year) + annual car tax (about 400€ per year). Instead if you have petrol version the tax is only that 400€ car tax per year. Thank you government :D
@@Jack_of_Helsinki quite the opposite here, the Pajeros are going up in price because no one wants to pay the NZ governments new car tax. And diesel is way cheaper than petrol here. $1.60 currently. And everyone has diesel utes here they are our top four/ five monthly sales in new vehicles. Always
The 3.8 is a better motor, more power and tends to last longer from what I’ve seen. And the 5 speed transmission is much better. They hold up well to abuse and they stay cooler because they have more gears to work with. Just my experience, but I see way less 03-06 in the junk yards than 01-02s
I bought a Montero with 73,000 miles on it. At 6 months (2000 miles later it consumed 1/4 of oil). I found out because of a particular sound it makes when it is cold, as if it was missing oil lol
