I miss video rental stores. I discovered numerous movies and games I otherwise never would have if I hadn't "browsed" those stores. You can't do that now.
Blockbuster and Hollywood video are hardly "forgotten" although anyone born in the 2000s or later would not know about it. To be forgotten, it had to be once known.
Nice to see a local Australian video rental chain was mentioned, as I happen to live 35 minutes drive away from the last remaining Civic Video store, fun fact, the owner of the store got a phone call from Google Australia to verify if his store was still in operation.
I try to mention stores outside of the U.S. so that’s people can get a wide input on stores globally. I never heard of Google calling to verify a business is still open, I though it got reported through Yelp or someone reported it close through Google itself. That is a good Fact 😃.
7:29 - I sure did have a TV/VCR combo when I was in high school that I purchased myself. I thought it would be a cool thing to have because no one else seemed to have one-but then I realized why; because they broke down extremely quickly.
A friend of mine worked at a local video store, it wasn't a chain. He used to give me videos without charging me(I always returned them, just didn't pay.) One day I went to return some videos and they had gone out of business, I still have those 7 movies. "Prince of Darkness" was the best by far.
Awesome stuff! I'd love to see a part two that goes more in-depth into Erol's as well as other chains Blockbuster forced out. Never heard of Civic or Rogers Video before.
Glad you enjoyed it! Part 2 for this video may not exist for a while, although I did a segment on Family Video rental chain in a separate video. My next Top 5 will cover Forgotten Drug Stores I'll try to roll out in the coming weeks. Civic and Roger Video was new to me for sure.I do recall reading up on Erol's.
I remember RKO Video. Their flagship store was in NYC. A multi level venue. Window displays included memorabilia from recent VHS (pre DVD) releases. Also miss the neighborhood Mom & Pop video stores. One step ahead for tech. Two steps behind for mankind.
@@undergroundretail Thanks. Again, the flagship store was in NYC on Broadway in the 40’s. I recall a second location in Long Island, NY. Not as elaborate but nice inventory.
Blockbuster was not as much fun to go to as mom and pop video stores. The selerction of more obscure titles was better at mom and pop stores . Also Blockbuster didn`t have the adult section.
They are all forgotten by me. I have never used one. I only know about the red boxes in front of some stores. I’ve never used those either. If I have ever wanted a dvd or a vhs tape Back in the day I would have bought it
I remember blockbuster when I was little I’m 14 by the way they used to be blockbuster by Woodford station UK yeah I’m from the UK I was sad when they started closing all their UK branches American branches And Australian branches in 2013
I remember blockbuster video and Hollywood video we had a lot of those in the Pittsburgh area I would go to Hollywood video a lot to almost every weekend and the weekends pretty much I didn’t go to Hollywood video I would go to blockbuster to get a movie.
Omg I definitely miss Blockbuster the biggest problem with Blockbuster was there policy on late fees, and the high prices otherwise they were awesome, Hollywood Video sucked afterwhile inconvenient locations same with Movie Gallery, and the other ones I never heard of, but back in Georgia where I used to live, one of my favorite supermarkets used to have a video rental department all RU-vidrs of the Southeast excluding Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana will definitely know this name, it’s Ingles they were a lot more laid back compared to Blockbuster and Hollywood Video on the polices of returns. 😁
@@undergroundretail Don’t agree. Redbox happened AFTER the demise. There are still a few folks out there with no internet, but they still have a DVD player. Redbox capitalizes on those people.
Jumbo video was the one that had free popcorn from one of those big glass popcorn stands. My kids helped themselves at least twice per visit. Love your videos am a new sub👍
