90% of all players can’t tell the difference between brands. They just like to say they do because it makes them sound like they are better than they are.

What a gutsy video. I loved it. I've been golfing for 40 years (I'm 75 now). When I "dabbled" in the game (more than 40 years ago) I played the "Starflight". Does anyone remember that golf ball? I played it for the most important reason at the time - it was the cheapest ball I could find. And it was depressing when I lost one (which was frequently). When I started playing seriously, I came to the conclusion that I should settle on one ball, based on the most reliable information I could find at the time, and stay with it. For me, that was the Titleist DT. Now I play only the Titleist ProV1. I'm now a 10 handicap, severely out-of-shape senior with a dreadfully slow swing speed. My drives only go around 210 yards but I can still say I hit them out-of-sight (at least for me and my eyesight). I retire more of my golf balls than I lose. I buy 4 boxes of ProV1s tat the beginning of the season and play about 130 rounds, retiring balls that have blemishes. I hate looking for golf balls and frankly, I don't care if I lose a brand new ball - for me it's not worth the effort. Someone else can have that G.D. golf ball that went errant! My shag bad contains more "slightly blemished" ProV1s than I can hit in a practice session. My days of practising for several hours and hitting a couple of large buckets of balls are over. My glorious days of enjoying a 2 handicap are now just a memory and now I struggle to maintain my 10 (how I'd love to join that single-digit handicap class again). Back to the point about the video: I believe you should find the best golf ball for you and stick with it: for practice as well as for play. There's so much reliable information out there (beyond marketing hype): it's not difficult. Whether I' putting, chipping, driving or hitting full irons, I can still tell the difference between hitting ProV1s and almost anything else. As to whether the ProV1 exclusively improves my score over anything else, I can't say. But I doubt it does anything bad. Cheers.

As a child I remember finding a few Star Flite balls. I think Spalding brand. I had a bag of them collected by time I was 12 but either someone stole them or? Idk anyway the lettering was pastel green Spalding Canada. I play with clubs from that era. Upped my swing count but rarely ever have to hunt in the woods or heard "kerplunk". All activity on the fairway now.

As a beginner I personally love free pick up golf balls I can tell by chipping or putting in the short game area or the back yard with them if they are still any good or if they've been lost in the woods for too long. My rule of thumb is Unless they are premium brand, look like new and have that complient bounce off the club face they're practice balls. I picked up about 60 this weekend in around 2 hours an even split of ProV1s Callaway Supersofts Strixon softs and Taylormades. I'll sort through them pick out the ones that look almost new putt them and chuck out anything that doesn't feel right.

This was so interesting Steve, also the video on the favorite balls was interesting as well. As a walker on a course that most everyone else rides I find lots and lots of balls and LOL that's what I play. Usually shoot right around or a little under 90 and hit my drives 190-200 most of the time and I don't notice a lot of difference except for the PRO VI. I used to give those to a friend until I used one for a round. Now those I keep for myself. I so enjoy your videos and your attitude.

Thanks for the heads up Steve. On a lark, I bought a box of wislon velocity(ies). 15 balls for $25. Erratic behavior .. sometimes long ..sometimes not (using the same ball) sometimes sticks sometimes bounces away (using the same ball.. I mean the exact same ball) .. If you like psychotic golf .. this ball is for you. But the upside is, if I lose one, I don't mind so much. Same way I feel about a found ball .. even a prov1 .. if I found it .. doesn't bother me if I lose it.

Hey Steve, like your list. I stopped using refurbished golf balls long ago. Rather surprised the TP5 is on the list. My 2 favorite balls right now are Snell MTB Black and Bridgestone RZx(.?). I agree with you about playing the same ball all the time. However, it gets a little expensive when you don’t take care of the ball all that well. My ultimate goal sometimes is to play with the same ball I started with. I hate losing balls on junked up golf courses. I refuse to play with found balls. My friends try to give them to me, I tell them I don’t want your water logged balls.

Love your vids Steve, and i value your opinion. Titleist TrueFeel for me. I know it's softer, but it's way more durable. I can't spin it like a urethane ball around the greens, but at the same time, it won't mysteriously go haywire and back up 30' away from the hole on a beautiful approach shot either. I'm not a pro, and i don't play on pro-level greens. I've played several places that were very nice, but none of them measured 13 on the stimp, so perhaps i'm not worldly enough to have such an opinion on urethane balls. I can play a "stop and drop" shot with a urethane ball well enough, but, in all honesty, it's rare that a situation calls for such a shot. A bump-and-run chip works fine 99% of the time, and more people would be well served approaching chip shots that way. I suppose i'm likely a high-spin player, and that's why the ball fits me so well. But even if it didn't, the rate of changing out a Pro VI after every 6 or 7 holes wouldn't jive for me (that's about when i usually see a urethane ball start to give up distance due to its slick cover no longer being quite so slick, or at least that's my theory - whatever the case, they don't hold up for long). FWIW, i'm about a 3 handicap, been playing for about 40 years, and my current swing speed is about 100 mph. Anything faster than 105 and body parts start to break or fall off :)

Thank you for posting but puzzled by your dismissal of the Titleist Tour Speed and Taylormade Tour Response. I have found these to be good performers for my 90/95 swing speed and much more affordable that Pro V1 or TP5. Are you saying these are bad balls or just not good values? BTW, with patience, I have been able to buy these for around $25/dz new. Can barely find clean used Pro V1 or TP5 for that price.
@Inmotion70
@Inmotion70 2 года назад
Hey Mac! Those golf balls simply don't spin much on irons or around the green, so unless you play soft slow greens your scores are likely to suffer. At the $25 level I would recommend the Vice Pro Plus over both.

Like starting all over, rebuilding my swing but a bit more frustrating...cannot make shots now that were routine before. Because I no longer have good distance, focusing heavily on tuning the short game. Good pitches and chip shots are usually required to saving par or even bogey. But still, what a great game.

Steve thank you for posting. Reading between the lines it appears that we all need to do our homework and really investigate what golf ball we should be using. I know some manufactures offer fitting advice free of charge. I have tried some for fun but not sure on how accurate these fittings really are. There are many factors that must be considered when selecting a golf ball.
@Inmotion70
@Inmotion70 2 года назад
Ball fittings cannot be accurate because it's simple one amateur golfer mishitting 10 drives randomly. And they keep pushing the average golfer towards low compression which is crappy.
@PIP-zf9yb
@PIP-zf9yb 2 года назад
Most average players need a lower compression ball because they mishit the ball so often. This has been proven in ball fittings and robot testing. Lower compression ball will be better for the majority of players and it's not even a debate

Slower swing speed would be better suited to those high spin balls, just to keep the ball in the air for longer. The high speed player that balloons the ball high would be suited to the low spin balls. Links players would also possibly like the lower spin balls, for windy conditions and also bump and run shots.

Taylormade TP5x is perfect. I also prefer the Titleist APX for the flight, but not around the greens. But Taylormade works so well for me, as the TP5x has exceptionally similar flight characteristics and really consistent spin around the green. If I hit a pitch the same way, it reacts the same. And the ball flight has a similar traj. I know you don't agree with this because of the distance, but I don't really find a golf ball to be poor because it goes 10 yards shorter. It's the overall performance.

10 yards here, 10 yards there, and soon it's 35.
@thechampionspath4715
@thechampionspath4715 2 года назад
@@Inmotion70 Golf is more than distance. Yeah, it helps, but I actually play the game. I shoot great scores hitting it 297-310 average. I don't really think that 20 yards more will do much for me. I'd rather have a ball with consistent perfornance, with good spin and control. I also don't buy into the ball having more distance, as the USGA have strict standards on this stuff. If you swing 90 mph, you'll get around 235 out of it. If you swing 110 mph, you'll get at least 290. Speed and contact are more measurable factors in distance than equipment. Personally I carry an old 1990s Callaway Warbird Driver 290 and a Callaway Rogue 293. I swing 117 mph average. But I scramble at 68%, and putt lights out from 6 feet. I rarely 3-putt. Golf isn't how long you hit it. It's a thousand things.

Agree on TP5...and all Taylormade balls. I would rather hit stones. Top Flites not on your list...again rocks. Found balls = Lake balls degrade the most, balls kept out of the sun - hidden in deep grass degrade the least. A ProV1 degrades 1% sitting in a box after 1 month. The Pros use balls direct from the factory.

Not sure this was mentioned in the comments before, but refurbished golf balls are different than used golf balls. With refurbished balls they actually put a new coating on the outside to hide any blemishes. You can still pick up some good quality used golf balls that are just golf balls that were found and not refinished. To me your video wasn't clear on that difference. But I agree, refurbished golf balls are not the same as the original.

Your spot on Doron a 20 plus handicap won't benefit from a pro v 1 it's a tour ball literally designed to work the ball which the average Joe already does to much of. People who say that are just schills and want to push people toward the expensive ball. Same goes for any of the top companies Taylor made Callaway Bridgestone. Don't play their top tour balls if your a 20 handicap who doesn't even know how to create spin around the greens you will be much better off with a lower compression surlyn ball that will help you hit it further and straighter

So used golf balls don't perform as well?. Well then, we should use a new golf ball for every hole, or we are losing distance and performance.

Steve, i agree with you that everyone will have their bias. However, from an engineering background, i would have to trust the data. At least use the data to eliminate certain balls then experiment around with whats left to see what works for you. Thanks for the video. I agree on the refurb balls 100 percent. I tried those a while ago and will never ever touch one even if it is a ProV1..

You swing at 115 MPH yet you tested balls that are meant for lower swing speed as that's what they were designed for? So naturally they don't perform well at the higher swing speed as that's not their purpose so this whole "test" was meaningless. I've found lots of lost golf balls and only a very small percentage of them under performed when used during rounds.

I didn't test the golf balls, they were tested by the PXG robot at various speeds.

Robots aren’t people and don’t account for different swing characteristics. A high handicap, slow swing speed beginner or Senior won’t likely won’t benefit from a premium ball. Most teaching pros I know steer folks like that away from premium balls for the most part. A lower compression ball like a soft feel or E6 can benefit high handicap who needs to cut down on side spin. Treosoft was a revelation to me at one time. Things can change as a player improves etc. Test balls yourself to find out what is best for you. Absolute statements like stay away from certain balls based on a robot is a narrow approach to me.
