Hi Agatha I remember you said you don’t have a data related degree but self taught yourself, and would you be able to do a video talking about the process of how you became a data analyst to now you being a BI engineer?
Hello! I've recently found your videos and wanted to get your thoughts. I currently work as what my company calls a reporting specialist. I work with excel (I have a certificate from Microsoft) I work with SQL and am familiar with basic queries. How easy in your opinion would it be for myself to become a data analyst? Thanks!
Hey! It sounds like you already use a lot of the data analyst tools on the job. I would continue to try to get hands on data work at your company and transition into a data analyst role. I think it would be much easier bc you have experience!
First aim is to perfect my data analytics skill and then I'll move over to BI engineering... let's see what the future holds. There are so many possibilities that I might be a data scientist 😊 Thanks for all the information you share they've been so helpful
Hi Agatha!! I'm a big fan of your videos and have been following you for a bit. I majored in marketing and have been working at a marketing agency for 2 years but I am looking to make a pivot into data analytics since the salary cap is much higher - I know this pivot can be hard as I have not learned the tools in school in order to make that direct pivot. Would I have to go back to get a masters or could I just do a BootCamp and or self teach? if you could comment or make a video on pivoting from an non STEM career to a STEM career. any advice would be so helpful :)
If you've not done this already, and feel qualified to talk about it, I would love to see a video about making mid-life transitions from unrelated fields to data analytics / data science fields, including how to do it, how doable it is, the challenges, etc.
This is a great video idea. I have a video talking about why I left my first career as a consultant coming out this week. Will work on a story about how I transitioned next!
Another great video, thanks Agatha! Any interest in doing a video on upskilling in data analytics + good projects to add to your data portfolio? For example, I currently don’t use SQL heavily in my job but I want to keep my SQL skills fresh - thinking to work on a SQL project to add to my portfolio + as a way to practice and reinforce my skills
Thank you and hey there! I can relate as SQL is definitely a skill that you can get rusty at when you haven't used in a while. I'm thinking about how to do a project video so thanks for the video input!
Nice video and interesting to see the rates for the different roles! What is your honest opinion as a data engineer on the data reliability of glassdoor's salary reports? I see many alternative videos and articles tackling this topic and they have different resources.
Glad you enjoyed the video and good question! Glassdoor is only as good as the data behind it. The salaries are based on self-reported data which can be good and bad. There could definitely also be some outliers if you have some really low paying salaries in the self-reported data. I use glassdoor as a good reference and compare those numbers with other sites like indeed. They're usually pretty close but you should also filter based on the wide salary variations in location, industry, and experience.
Nice to meet a fellow BI Engineer :) I'm still figuring this out for myself haha but I see a few paths from here. You can move up to principal BI Engineer, continue to up skill and transition into the other data roles like data engineer, or go the management route and become manager/director/VP overseeing data and analytics. There's multiple paths and it really depends on your strengths and career goals!
Thank you so much for covering these data positions. Do you have any recommendations for Data Analyst courses that cover statistics, excel, sql, data visualization, storytelling data, etc?
You're welcome! I put some resources covering these skills in my description above. I also plan to do more reviews on courses and bootcamps to help you figure out the best resources that works for you.
@@agathakang Great! It would definitely help! I see too many data analyst programs out there that don’t teach enough about data analysis, statistics, and how to communicate data.
@@agathakang What are your top tips for breaking into the first role as an Analyst? I've gathered the following information: - Want to work in Biotech, Healthcare, Non-profit (only for starter roles) - Finished my Google DA Cert and taking more courses to increase my comfort with SQL and Python. I'm good with Excel and Tableau is easy to learn. - Goal is to become a Data Scientist or BI Engineer - I'm thinking a MSc down the road - I'm targeting remote roles from mid-level and up - I'd rather stay as an individual contributor - Reaching out to non-profits for DA volunteer opportunities. I thought that would be easy. Free labor. - Will start building my own portfolio this weekend. I'm aiming for 3-5 projects showcasing my skills with Excel, SQL, and Tableau What's your take, if you have the time and are willing to answer. Really want to make this move into tech. I've been following your content for a few months. Thank you for your work. It's clear, concise, and well-articulated.
Data scientists getting paid more than BI/Data Engineer should be a crime. Apart from very large companies like MS/Google, I have not seen a company making its AI tools useful.
