Some of my favorite female horror directors: The Soska Sisters (American Mary) Gigi Saul Guerrero (Culture Shock) Jennifer Kent (The Babadook) Karyn Kasuma (Jennifer's Body & The Invitation) Ana Lily Amirpour (A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night) Anna Biller (The Love Witch) Mary Lambert (Pet Sematary) Mary Harron (American Psycho) Kathryn Bigelow (Near Dark)
Wauw, never really have thought about female directors. When I see a woman made a horrormovie im always happy like.. Yeah! But thnx for this list because I'm gonna definitely check these woman and their movies 👌
Ana Lily Amirpour looks pretty interesting. A friend of mine who's a year younger than me watched it and didn't like it (he have it a 1 star in his Insta story and called it stupid) but I'm still intrigued with it cause for a majority of the time seeing others opinions doesn't affect my judgement cause i consider art to be very subjective
Jennifer Kent (The Babadook, The Nightingale) is my fave modern female horror director. Her short film which The Babadook is based upon is really good, too.
I love Katherine Isabelle (underrated in my opinion!) and Heather Langenkamp. Not only is she Nancy, but she was involved in SFX make up and has made her own horror shorts! :)
I think Toni Collete was the perfect person to play the mother in Hereditary; she KILLED IT. I don't think anyone could have played the role better than her!
Aw, I think it's so cool how Kate Siegal isn't just cast in Mike Flanagan's projects, but co-writes with him too! And I even didn't know they were married, so there's a fun fact as well. 💖
Here are some favorite directors and their movies: Guillermo del Toro-Crimson Peak Andy Mushietti-It Stanley Kubrick-A Clockwork Orange (I love The Shining but prefer this film) James Wan and Leigh Whannel-Saw Eli Roth-Hostel, Clown Takashi Miike-Ichi the killer Shinya Tsukamoto-Tetsuo the iron man Rob Zombie-31,House of 1000 corpses John Carpenter-Halloween Wes Craven-The People Under The Stairs, Scream
Guillermo del Toro's film The Devil's Backbone is one of my favourites and criminally underrated! It feels quite similar to Pan's Labyrinth so I'd absolutely recommend it to anyone that loved that film.
omg you really should do a video/videos covering Hill House and Bly Manor!! Hill House changed my life and Bly Manor really lives up to it imo. two absolute masterpieces!! definitely interested in your opinion of them both!
The reason I didn't like Scary Stories was the cringy script. I loooved the monsters though. I love the Soska Sisters, and Jenn Wexler is a female director/producer/writer to keep an eye on, I really enjoyed The Ranger.
Pan's labyrinth is one of the greatest movies ever made. Doctor Sleep is one of the best movies created in the last 20 years. Two deeply stunning, beautiful, and wonderful works - glad to see them both mentioned in this list.
I have an idea. You might have had the idea. It’s a great idea. You should become a female horror director! We need more, right? I’ve been a horror fan for a very long time. Why not you!!??
I wholeheartedly agree with you on Del Toro. Pan's Labyrinth, Crimson Peak, and The Devil's Backbone are my favorites. He has the ability to create deeply terrifying scripts, but they also have a haunting beauty to them. I love everything Del Toro does.
For Guillermo del Toro I also recommend a film he was an executive producer of El Orfanato, the orphanage, its supernatural, thriller, and drama. Absolutely love it
Jennifer Kent, Coralie Fargeat, Karyn Kusama, Kathryn Bigelow, Mary Harron, Ana Lily Amirpour, Julia Ducournau, Alice Lowe, Marina de Van, Jennifer Lynch, Sophia Takal, Nia DaCosta, Leigh Janiak, Issa Lopez, Claire Denis, Anna Biller, and Mary Lambert
My favorite horror director is probably Dario Argento - horror is not a genre I take too seriously, so I think his approach of aesthetic, dreaminess, mood, and style is perfect for the genre. Suspiria is one of my favorite movies ever, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage is INCREDIBLE, Profondo Rosso is amazing, and Tenebrae is also an excellent film. For a horror director to create four classic films like that is really unheard of. The man was a genius.
I'm genuinely obsessed with your videos...we have WAY different tastes...but I love that! I look into or back into films because of your channel. Women in Horror! Director...Karyn Kusama and Amy Holden Jones Actor...Queen Neve Campbell
@@chriscze6153 Exactly! That's why she's so great. Cause I'll be like... "Why?! Noooo." Then I'll watch or rewatch...and I can see where she's coming from.
My favorite horror directors:: Ari Aster (Midsommar and Hereditary) Jordan Peele (Get Out) Robert Eggers (The Lighthouse) Jennifer Kent (The Babadook) Guillermo Del Toro (The Shape of Water, i know...not a horror film but still.) Leigh Whannell (The Invisible Man) James Wan (Saw and The Whole Conjuring Universe)
I’m a huge fan of Heather Langenkamp work (Nancy from knightmare on elm street) after realizing acting wasn’t her dream she became a makeup artist her and her husband were the minds behind the monsters in Cabin in the woods
Guillermo del Toro is AMAZING i love his work, i've watched everything he's released. Also i re-watched Pan's Labyrinth and it still makes me anxious in the best way, Mama is such a fucking good movie, and that ending is SO his style.
Dario Argento is one of my favorites, definitely up there with the most influential horror directors. His daughter Asia is in a lot of his movies and his wife at the time too (Daria Nicolodi), she co-wrote Suspiria with him and had a role but couldn't act due to an injury. Besides Asia and Daria another woman that comes to my mind is Eva Green, loved her in Penny Dreadful. Jodelle Ferland is amazing in Tideland and Silent Hill imo. Rob Zombie and Sheri Moon. Linnea Quigley is awesome. I love Tim Burton horror and early Cronenberg too.
I was also pronouncing Leigh's name wrong for an embarrassing amount of time I think I was watching an interview with him or something and they said his name and I was like wait what...
André Øvredal (alongside GdT) is up there as one of my favourite horror directors! Trollhunter, The Autopsy of Jane Doe and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark are some of my favourites and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen them all! 😆 I was so happy when I found out he was working with GdT on Scary Stories 🙌🏻
Gotta love the RU-vid algorithm for recommending some great horror content. Love your channel already! 🖤 My list of favs includes Mike Flanagan too, and the others are James Wan, Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Lighthouse), and Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar). Female horror director that I instantly thought of is Jennifer Kent. The Babadook was such a phenomenal horror debut, and while The Nightingale is not a horror movie, it is an extremely tough watch. Can’t wait for her next project!
Jennifer Kent is definitely a great Horror movie director Witz That Babadook and The Nightingale (not really a horror movie but extremely well made). Also the lead actors in both movies (Essie Davis and Aisling Franciosi) were phenomenal
True! I don't really know to many female directors... Guillermo del Toro is more than a Horror director and can't wait to see more but my favorite always be Wes Craven cuz He is a legend!
This year I loved “Relic” by Natalie Erika James and “Amulet” by Romola Garai. Both are written and directed by them. I should keep an eye on them because these films are truly unique and interesting. I am happy to see women directing more often!
Here are my recs for female horror directors: - Karyn Kusama. She directed Jennifer's Body (written by Diablo Cody) and The Invitation. - Raw directed by Julia Ducournau is great. - The Lodge (2019) was co-directed by a woman named Veronika Franz. - The Babadook and The Nightingale directed by Jennifer Kent. - Near Dark is a vampire movie directed by Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow, it's one of her early films. Also shoutout to Debra Hill who produced and co-wrote some of John Carpenter's movies including Halloween and The Fog. Those are the ones I can think of right now, hope it helps :)
The mansion in Scary Stories is literally around the corner from my house. It takes a whole 2 minutes to walk to it. I've been obsessed with it since I was a kid, but I don't have the millions of dollars the family would want for the house XD - No one lives in it, just big ole' beautiful spooky house. Women in Horror - Neve Campbell, Jamie Lee Curtis, Anne Rice, Karyn Kusama, Sarah Hawkinson, Emma (SA), Mykie, Kate Siegel, Mary Shelley, and my queen Ve Neil (Actresses, Authors, Directors, influencers, makeup)
Fairuza Balk, Robin Tunney, Neve Campbell, & Rachel True in The Craft Emily Perkins & Katharine Isabelle in Ginger Snaps Neve Campbell & Courteney Cox in Scream, Scream 2, Scream 3, & Scream 4 Michelle Pfeiffer, Susan Sarandon, & Cher in The Witches of Eastwick Nicole Kidman, Sandra Bullock, & Evan Rachel Wood in Practical Magic Sally Hawkins in The Shape of Water Julia Ducournau directing Raw with Garance Marillier Jennifer Kent directing The Babadook Mary Harron directing American Psycho
Tom Savini (Night of the Living Dead) George A. Romero (Creepshow) James Wan (Saw and the Conjuring 2) John Carpenter (The Thing,The Fog and Halloween) Eli Roth (Cabin Fever) Gore Verbinski (The Ring) Wes Craven (Nightmare on Elm Street,Scream,The Last House on the Left,Shocker and The hills have eyes) Jordan Peele (Get Out) Mike Flanagan (Absentia (2011), Oculus (2013), and Gerald's Game (2017) Andy Muschietti It 2017 and Chapter Two Leigh Whannell M. Night Shyamalan
Favorite female creators? A few of mine: Karyn Kusama (favorite film - The Invitation) Jen & Sylvia Soska (ff - American Mary) Jennifer Kent (ff - The Babadook) Ana Lily Amirpour (ff - A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night) Debra Hill (ff - The Fog)
Has Guillermo del Toro in the thumbnail & is wearing a Scary Stories shirt...I see you. 😉👍 And there's aboslutely NO problem with having your Halloween decor still up. One year at Christmas I simply worked around the Halloween decorations that I was too lazy/too attached to take down by placing Santa hats on the animatronics and having them set up around the Christmas tree. 😆🎄🎃
James Whale:Frankenstein,The Old Dark House,The Invisible Man,The Bride of Frankenstein.Female horror directors :Ida Lupino :The Hitch- Hiker,Kathryn Bigelow:Near Dark, Jennifer Kent:The Babadook
She's only done two movies so far, but both of them were horror, so Jennifer Kent. She's a fantastic director who has knocked it out of the park in both of her movies (The Babadook and The Nightingale). If we're gonna give Jordan Peele and Ari Aster such big credit with only two movies in the genre, than she should definitely be apart of that conversation as well
It’s also important to highlight directors of colour that are making/made horror movies Love that you put Guillermo del Toro up there of course to no surprise since I’ve been following your channel for so long haha James Wan Jordan Peele Nikyatu Jusu Ana Lily Amirpour Remi Weekes (His House already showed a bright future in the genre) Earnest R. Dickerson Just to name a few
@Alexandrea North you see me sharing directors of colour and felt the need not only to just go Ehm actually but to call a beloved and amazingly talented director racist on what grounds, lol
@Alexandrea North pls just watch Videos by black youtubers regarding this topic bc if you think this is him being racist you’re really misunderstanding the fact that he just wants to help represent black people on screen
Amazing list! I would say that M.Night Shyamalan is my Favorite 'Horror' Director, (he's my favorite Director in general) but he doesn't do full on 'Horror', mainly he gravitates towards 'Thriller', so I guess he would be my choice, considering I would (personally) put The Visit, Split, and The Sixth Sense all in that genre...but any other Horror Director I can think of has only worked on 1 Project LOL. Here are some of my honorable mentions: Lee Cronin David F. Sandberg Alejandro Amenábar and Alexandre Aja
James wan (conjuring, saw, insidious) John carpenter (the thing, it follows, halloween) Ari aster ( hereditary , midsommar) Wes craven (scream, nightmare on elms street, last house on the left) Jordan peele (us, get out)
And to add another one to the thriller with potential horror elements: Emerald Fennel, the director of Promising Young Woman. Easily one of my all time favourite movies, it’s just great
Unpopular opinion but I love the director's cut of Mimic by Guillermo del Toro. Even he expresses his frustration with the orignal movie in the bonus features. I saw Mimic when I was little and I lived in New York City so the scenery really resonated with me. The Judas Breed seemed like a plausible bug especially since even though it wasn't the bug he wanted originally in the film he still based the bug anatomy on real invertebrates. Also the spoons! It's just so memorable.
I was waiting for this 😍 Whenever you upload it makes my day! still defining what directors I like the most tho... Oh and what about your favorite performances in horror ?
I love the Soska Sisters, who directed American Mary and dared to do a Remake of Cronenbergs "Rabid", which was really good and also a hommage. An actor, that i really love is Angela Bettis, she appears in almost all Luck McKee Films I know!
Nia DaCosta directed Candyman 2021 and this is her first horror film as far as i know and her second film directed overall. Guillermo is very much a magical realism director.
I am an age old Guillermo fan and own every one of his movies. I love every one of them but ONE of my favorites is Orphanage! I love a really good ghost story set in an amazing old home! 😍😍😍 Thanks for all your insight, I always go away from your videos having learned something and usually a movie or 3 to add to my watch list! ❤️
I absolutely love Victoria Pedretti (The Haunting of Hill House, YOU & The Haunting of Bly Manor). She's brilliant in every single role and I think she's one of the most talented new actresses in Hollywood.
Favorite Horror Actresses: Danielle Harris, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jessica Lange, Katharine Isabelle, Adrienne Barbeau. Favorite Female Horror Directors: The Soska Sisters(American Mary), Julia Ducournau(Raw) I bet there are more female directors that have made films I enjoy and I just don't know it yet, so I'll throw in a few men as well; Guillermo del Toro, Dario Argento, Wes Craven, Takashi Miike, Hideo Nakata, Adam Green. As a bonus since I don't hear much love for him, I'll add Jamie Blanks since I loved his late 90s/early 2000s slashers Urban Legend/Valentine.
Del Toro's in my top ten favorite directors too.. I was lowkey hopin' you'd mention "The Devil's Backbone" somewhere in your list, but it's not really a mainstream title, so eez cool LOL Great video though-- just found your channel and I'm enjoying your horror movie commentaries so far... cheers ^_^
1. Sam Raimi (Evil Dead 1/2) 2. James Wan (Saw) 3. Wes Craven (A Nightmare on Elm Street) 4. John Carpenter (Halloween) 5. Dario Argento/Tobe Hooper (Suspiria and Texas Chainsaw Massacre) Also I don't really know any female directos so Jamie Lee Curtis as my favorite horror actress
@@PossessedbyHorror yup! Mark Pelham illustrator. 😀 love your channel. Keep up the good work! You and SpookyAstronauts are my favorite horror reviewers.
For me personally, my Top 5 Horror Directors are: 1. Wes Craven Last House on the Left, The Hills Have Eyes, Nightmare on Elm Street, The Serpent and the Rainbow, and Scream. Do I need to give another reason why he's one of my favorite directors. 2. George Romero Dawn and Day are two of my favorite movies of all time, the Crazies is an overlooked masterpiece, and Land is a guilty pleasure. 3. John Carpenter He's not on here because of Halloween, I'll say that much. He's here because of The Thing, They Live, Prince of Darkness, In the Mouth of Madness, and The Fog. 4. Tobe Hooper While I wasn't a huge fan of the original TCM I love Part 2 for its B-Movie charm. Poltergeist, while his effect on it a bit debatable, is a personal favorite. Life-force is also a guilty pleasure. 5. Dario Argento Suspiria, Tenebrae, and almost all of his collaborations with Daria Nicolidi put him on this list. Honorary Mentions: Charles Band, Roger Corman, and Lloyd Kaufman. Charles Band I appreciate more for his producer credits than as a director. Whether under Empire, Full Moon, or one of his other countless production companies B-movie, campy fun is guaranteed. Roger Corman I appreciate for his business savvy. He has been in the business since the 50's and many great directors and actors made it big through his tutelage. Lloyd Kaufman I appreciate for his dedication to the art of filmmaking and for making the field more accessible as a career to the average person. Troma has never had particularly large budgets but every cent is shown onscreen, and they support new filmmakers better than most studios.
Heyo :)) I just found your channel and I love your music taste, it's bad ass 👌 Also I just watched your Ed and Lorraine Warren video about how they are lying. Honestly I wouldn't doubt it, though I 100% believe in spirits. I don't know if demons exist but I have had many supernatural experiences. I haven't seen a chair float or anything though. I saw this shadow person on my wall when I was around 7 or 8 and it was across the room so it wasn't mine, plus when I moved a little bit it didn't. So I froze then it ran to the other wall and went out my door. I ran crying to my dad and he had to come in my room. That was "best" experience I had. I have had others though, like I have lights hanging up in my room and this one spirit liked to keep touching them. Like one strand was hanging down and they would swing it. (Also I live on land that used to belong to Indians and there are a lot of Indian burial sites nearby)
GIRL. I agree with all your picks. Personally Leigh is my top just because I LOVE everything he does, but wow I love every one of these creators. Also Jennifer Kent is my fav female director... she’s a queen
