Gotta include the Mooney M20C or M20E in the best bang for the buck category. I did my primary and commercial training in low wings, transitioning into my M20C was smooth. Johnson bar fully mechanical gear is extremely reliable and cheap to maintain vs any other complex aircraft.... 50% faster than a 172 on the same fuel burn and built like a tank.

I’ve flown Piper Cherokee, Archer, Cessnas 150,172 but nothing compares to the Diamond Da40 it’s amazing over all. Way more cooler airplane it just feels right. As far as the price I haven’t found a G1000 in the 100s only 6 pack versions.

Skankhunt 42 well I have a wife and kid so 4 seats is a must. Obviously I’d like something relatively fuel efficient. I’m a low time pilot needing to build hours, but this will be a long term plane for us so something a little quicker would be nice for traveling. I’d like an autopilot and relatively low engine time so I’m not immediately taking it in for overhaul (unless the price reflects the need form a new engine). I’m learning there’s a lot of planes out there but not one meets everything so I’m still figuring out needs vs wants. I’ve been leaning towards a Comanche, but would need to get my complex endorsement and swallow the higher insurance costs.

The only DA 40s going under 100k are either really, really rough and beyond TBO, or are the ones with the original panels which many Americans found uncomfortable. I owned the original panel, and had no issues with it, but it was hard to sell. I also did not have issues with climb speed or over heating while living on the gulf coast. I don’t know where that comes from. At this point, and with government having gone crazy, I would NOT feel very safe with any of the planes from the 70’s and earlier from a financial point of view. They could inspection requirement or otherwise regulate your model into being impossible to sell or keep flying. I know the old trainers have held their value for years, but so had the high performance planes until the tax changes under financial stress of the 2000’s. Those planes found a new, lower level, and so could any of them.

The 7-8 gph on the 150 is at full power a cruise at 2500 rpm and I get about 5.5 honest close to about 110mph

Love the videos but using miles per hour for aviation videos is a bit of a head scratcher. Even for non pilots, we need for them to get used to using knots. We haven't used the mph groundspeed system for decades in aviation.

It's a gimmick.. Mph is used more so by light sport and experimental guys to make the numbers look better.. He is into the home made craft which have lots to offer but I agree mpa is a gimmick

My bonanza was under $100k when I bought it with a new engine (high performance), modern avionics, faster (172kts), better fuel burn (12.5gph) and higher useful load(1200lbs) than any of these trainer planes. This isn’t a great list. What about a mooney m20? Other Bonanzas? Cessna 210’s? Etc?

DA40 for under $100k? Maybe a timed out one, and maybe one with a questionable history. Nothing from Piper - a bit disappointed to be honest - instead you chose a Beech Sundowner, which is almost like a Piper copycat (albeit with two passenger doors).

I love watching your stuff but this video is a little sloppy. I get that these will get you the views but more research should be done and not pick your top 5 based on planes you’ve recorded in the past. Also, your description says top 5 experimental planes for under $100k but these are all certified. A Cessna 152 does not compare at all to a Mooney m20c in performance. What about the piper comanche? A Mooney and Comanche can all be had for under $100k with much better performance than any of these. Only calling you out cause I want to see you do better!

coolhari2000 I have no problem with that. His video isn’t reviewing new planes. The sundowner and Cessna 152 are being reviewed and still over 30 years old. My main point is that mojo is recommending people these planes just because he has footage for them rather than assessing them for what he claims is price/performance.

Only bad thing about a jabiru is that it has a jabiru in it !!! A man down here in Tx changed his junker 200tt Jabby out for a ul350is. And he loves it. The reason he likes the plane is the space where the rear seats go. They travel with 2 dogs 😎

Hey Mike, are you finding the insurance rates becoming increasingly expensive? Do you know of insurance companies that can give new pilots rates that are somewhat affordable? It seems the insurance is becoming less affordable especially for new pilots?

Try the AOPA. They have an online rate quoting system, although, it took them a week to get back to me with a quote. Not sure if you're taking owner or renter insurance rates. I had them run the cost of a 2-seater RV-14A amateur-built (NOT an LSA). For my experience (NOT a low-time pilot - ATP, career pilot) the annual rate was just under $2000.

That Diamond DA40. WTF do I need to run this company for them? Bigger engine please. 500ft per minute is not acceptable not close. Also 600 mile range. Horrible. That plane needs more power and tanks to get down. Yes burn goes up from 9 ph.... I'm willing to pay that.
