Some guy was playing with his friend and accidentally skipped the entire difficulty, and made a vague Reddit post. Forced the game to make an entirely new set of categories as it basically killed the game.

regardless of what you want to say though he got all records. all he did was not upload them right away to stop people stealign them SURE underhanded sure a dick move BUT all legit records all legitimately earned. anyone could have at any time while he was offline grinding lowered the records themself. Im not saying it wasnt a dick move it was just that the reaction to it is as if it came out he cheated which he did not. It should always be noted he cheated the all v him competition but he earned em. the record wasnt who can get all 32 with everyone else stopping them had no one tried to stop him or care it would go down as a great achievement in speedrunning and thats all he was competing for. he cheated the all v him and as such it will never be noted how great he was for beating the community BUT he did get all 32 legit world records at one time
@h.g.762
@h.g.762 2 года назад
@@Zalied You have to be a bit more precise here... he did not cheat the all vs him, he did cheat the anyone vs. him.... at this level he evaded the whole competition (and that is what speedrunning is about, being better than anyone else). And its not really only that, you have to keep in mind that anybody else is transparent about all times, he basically even took advantage over all done times that people got in the meantime since he knew more than anyone else. Its like i start a MMR fighting competition with a big funding but beating every top player by not telling them where the fights start so i disqualify them and they cant fight me in my competition... so i can claim beeing the all time best fighter since i won against everyone... without a fight and chance for my opponents, but who cares right? According to the rules i won against all....
@Zalied
@Zalied 2 года назад
@@h.g.762 people had 20+ years to break those records and anyone can break them again i may have worded it badly but your doing the same thing. he wanted to be the current fastest or tied fastest on every track that was his competition and his goal beating eveyrone whose ever come before him. you and the community have created this second competition where he has to do it agaisnt eveyrone trying to stop him. this is not what speedrunning is IT IS FUN but its not what speedrunning is. when someones speedrunning a game for WR its not him vs the next guy trying to beat it first its him vs the old record. (or them vs their pb to improve themself) he cheated the community aspect of it where its you racing someone else to the top. EXCEPT it wasnt even him vs someone else going for a record this was just everyone vs him getting all records so its him vs everyone not anyone. he was better than any 1 person the community needed everyone to stop him and he cheated to prevent that. BUT that wasnt the competition he was going for. if the week before the olympics i go and break the 500m dash record no ones like WELL THATS NOT FAIR everyone else was training for the olympics and didnt know they had to race you that day. regardless the record was broken and that was the only goal. he should and rightlyfully so has gotten shit for holding records kinda ruining everyone elses fun. NOW youd have to go back and if hes out there goading everyone to stop him and is activly trying to do a all vs him thing thats one thing. But if his only goal was get all 32 then he did his goal. people are only mad because that community has decided that anyone going for all 32 should have to follow these rules for it dispite that having nothing to do with speedrunning. the rules of speedrunning were all followed and thats all i mean "dude quits the community over this" is bs nonsense. people are way too upset. theres a level of acceptable upsetness and i agree people can and should be mad. and then theres what we got which is ridiculous. idk how else to word it its scummy and he did an underhanded tactic YES he legitimatly beat every record something no one else has done. AND TO NOTE everyone else who did it had easier records to beat. when the first guy almost got 32/32 the records were lower. people knew he was going for 32/32 anyone could have preemptively lowered the records. once he got 32/32 nothing changed except peoples moods. new records are still being made had he never gone for 32/32 wed be where we are now except people would be less mad as new strats have been discovered and new records made. everyones acting like this ruins the community no it ruins the 32/32 grind and thats it. everyone mad wasnt even going for it. sure the 1 guy who almsot got it before and everyone stopped him is rightfully mad but at what? holding records scummy yes but he got all 32/32 records call him a shit person but he didnt cheat he earned them and he was clearly one of the best mario kart racers of all time. you even state it yourself "(and that is what speedrunning is about, being better than anyone else)." that is what he was better than anyone else. he was the fastest time in all races thats better than anyone else. thats what he did. you didnt say speedrunning is being better than anyone else BUT they have to be notified in advanced and given ample time to grind and maybe stop you. no he was faster than 100% of all existing people ever in the history of the game up until that point (or tied cus ties exist) your exact argument is what i said hes a shitty person for doing it but 100% in the just be the fastest competition did nothing wrong.
@h.g.762
@h.g.762 2 года назад
@@Zalied as you mentioned, i indeed worded it bad.... speedrunning is about being faster than anyone else, but in a competition... without the competition i lose the interest in "being fastest". You cant compare that with single times, this achievement is what it is since it is too hard to pull off. I dont deny that dan is one of the best players of the game and as he has already proven, can beat every time. If you set up a record and i beat it, you might be interested in getting it back, since that is the competition part and makes it what it is. When you think about how hard it would be to get 3 records in a popular game, you give the idea credit because you have in mind that people will try to beat your times and you might have some trouble defending them. The idea of having 32 out of 32 is impressive just because it is insane being the fastest on every track AT THE SAME TIME because the competition of SO MANY tracks is kinda undefendable. The whole glory of this achievement is about the competition that makes it so unlikely to happen. Dan can legitimately claim and write down that he held every record at the same time and it sounds impressive, but when you think about that keep in mind that there were many occasions where other top runners could have pulled this insane achiement off, if they would have done it this way it is.

That's actually quite a dick move tbh. Why didn't the alliance keep fighting? MR wasn't doing anything to deserve the "hate", he was just flipping good at the damn game. And man did he ever work for his goal, fighting on 32 front lines at once, almost touching success just to get beaten in the last second so many times. Probably the most tragic prodigy in speedrunning history. Huge respect to MR, shame on the alliance. Also they miserably failed their goal of keeping one player from holding all WR's. And that is what the alliance was founded on.
@xRaisn

@@Noise-Bomb Dan hoarded his records, meaning no one was aware of him beating the records. he hoarded apparently like 20, so 20 records that were unofficial and no one could even try to compete for and aim to beat. the alliance always tried to get specific records to keep matthias from 32/32, they couldnt do that with dan due to his hoarding.

What makes me sad is that MR could probably have swept easily back then, when times were much less optimized in the first place, yet he didn't. Karl mentions that it's a great achievement, which might be true, but if it could have happened like that years ago if Matthias had wanted only the 'medal', it's not really something I can applaud that much. Apparently many records are also tied, and it's just such a silly situation that I can't really see that achievement as anything but a sad story for poor Matthias.

Dan hoarding over half of the world records so nobody would try to compete and stop him was so underhanded that I still see MR as the goat. He continuously posted his records as he got them so that the community, who banded together against him, would come together to try and stop him, and he nearly succeded over seven different times. I was wondering if Mattias would have done that himself just because of the alliance against him. In the end, the speed runners did not work to improve the WR’s while Dan did. @@Flakey101 You gotta keep in mind that "getting world records" isn't the end-all be-all of speedrunning playing the game. The game has had an active speedrunning community for 25 years, one of the longest communities in all of speedrunning. As such, the records have become extremely optimized. As such, speedrunners sometimes have to put hundreds of hours and thousands of attempts at a single map just to shave a few milliseconds off a world record (keep in mind, each map has 4 possible ones.) You also misconstruded my point. I said "people wouldn't try to beat others records if they didn't even know of a new record to beat". I may be missing something here but isn't it kinda childish to retire after not getting that. No one is obligated to give up or stay away from a WR. Was there some genuine poor sportsmanship that just wasn't specifically mentioned?? Edit: I read someone else's comment, keeping wr times and then dumping them all at once is indeed shady
@Gamer2k4
@Gamer2k4 2 года назад
@@masonmunkey6136 It's only shady in a community whose only driving force is preventing someone else's achievement. If they really cared about the best times and the world records, they should be constantly grinding out runs trying to shave off fractions of seconds wherever they can. But their only motivation appears to be trying to stop someone else from being the best, which is a pretty lousy motivation. People say it's healthy for the game to have that kind of competition, but I say the opposite - if hindering and disrupting others is your only reason for running, your community is downright toxic. If no one's motivated to pursue records unless they're doing it to obstruct another community runner, that's about as unhealthy as you can be. It means you don't actually care about the records themselves; you just care that someone else doesn't have them. If I was speedrunning the game in that kind of environment, I'd keep my records hidden too.
@Ceece20
@Ceece20 2 года назад
@@Gamer2k4 agreed. Speed runners can make new WR literally at any time for any reason. If they were so concerned, they should be constantly improving WR’s to prevent someone from being able to hoard WR’s and dumping them all. Here is a better question: why were they sitting on their butts the whole time? If one guy can hoard the records for so long, that he can get half of the WR’s without any improvements by anyone else, he deserves the prestige. It’s the rest of the community’s fault for not improving the WR’s.

They're still WRs. It still means that, at that moment, he was better than literally everyone else running the game. People weren't beating his runs because they didn't care to improve the game unless it meant ruining someone else's accomplishment. Always strive for improvement, and... They didn't. The community only pushed to improve records because of their own egos. When you remove the threat of "someone is objectively better than me at this game, having achieved every WR for the game", they stop improving. Speedrunning is a competition. Competition means striving for improvement. And in my eyes? That includes when there's no competition. It's why I keep my records. Because I don't "just give up" when I get into first. I keep striving for improvement. I keep pushing my limits. I keep improving.

I agree with the critics that the 32 simultaneous Mario Kart 64 world records is tainted. The guy kept everything offline, didn't tell anyone what he was doing, and didn't post any of the times until he'd already done all of them. After the fact, he even admitted that it was a dishonest move, and apologized to the community. IMO 32 simultaneous WRs isn't earned if you aren't posting them within a reasonably short time of actually doing it, and giving the community a fair shot at responding.

@AtomicArtumas
@AtomicArtumas 2 года назад
Why should the community need an incentive to "respond"? That's my response to that. They need to protect their own ego and that's important apparently? Like... I've had people try to sweep a game I actively held records for before, without submitting them until it was done. They never managed it because I just kept improving my own record, to the point that my records just 100% outclassed them and made it impossible. No outside incentive needed, just my own desire to beat my own record.
@AkumaAPN
@AkumaAPN 2 года назад
@@AtomicArtumas It has nothing to do with incentive. Gamers move around. You play a particular level for a while, and if you get the record, you move on to another level, or another game, and come back later. People have to use their time wisely, and focus on one thing at a time. And when you see activity somewhere, you can go back to it. Dan sat on over a dozen records for about 15 months, and during that time, people had no idea there had been advancement on any of those levels, and were instead focusing on other levels. It's just not the way things have been done. In the end, the community did ban record hoarding, and additionally held Dan to a permanent probation status, where he can only claim new records if they've been streamed live and reported immediately. The fact that the community has ruled on this point should tell you all you need to know. What he did is not the way things should be done.
