You've recommended the NRS Boundary boots before. I bought them and have never regretted it. I wear them all winter and spring while paddling. They keep my feet dry and warm.

Ken! Just saw a tv commercial for you on Bally Sports Channel while sitting at the bar at Twin Peaks restaurant in Maplewood Mo. You have finally arrived my friend! BTW, I just bought a Deeper CHIRP2 castable sonar and have been towing it behind my kayak on a 1’ string making 3d maps of my local St Louis Mo lakes and thought maybe you could do a video on fishfinders snd portable sonars. Btw, thanks for the Mississippi River vids, awesomesauce. We waterski there and it is not for the faint of heart! The river is a true melted avalanche and must be respected as such grandpa always taught.

Ha! That's awesome. I've heard from a few people who saw the commercial now. :) That's a really cool idea to map out your lakes! CHIRP is awesome, isn't it? It would be interesting to do a video about depth finders... One thing I find is that when I'm using one, I'm spending more of my time looking at the screen (curious about the underworld) than taking in my surroundings! :)

Thanks for this video. I'm avoiding early spring paddling because I don't have the right gear for it at the moment, but at least I have a good idea now on what I can do when I'm ready to get started a little sooner. Looking forward to checking out your next trip!

I always wear a full dry suit in winter. However, when spring hits I switch to a two-piece dry suit just to keep a little cooler. Great and helpful video. So funny to see a clip from when you had to swim I remember that video, you had got the drone out but forgot to secure the boat. Tip for you Ken if you use pogies keep a spare per of gloves in your PFD

I fell in last December in Pennsylvania and the base layers continued to insulate when wet which allowed me to finish off a nice day on the water. Cold water can be deadly and the right gear can make all the difference.

Much of the gear you showed I have seen but not entirely sure of its purpose. All of my paddling has taken place in Florida. We have lots of insects...fewer during 'winter' but those 2 weeks have passed. Its much like the Okefenokee where I paddle...I even go there 3 or 4 times a year. Here its a good idea to stay in your boat. Thanks for the tips...welcome to Spring.

I stopped wearing a dry suit because it's too hard to go to the washroom, and the older you are the more you have to go. Instead, I switched to a wet bottom and a dry top. I tried swimming in it with my PFD and skirt to help seal the top and it worked perfectly.

Abother issue with wetsuits is comfort A pair of thicker neo gloves or mitts for cold season paddling are pre-formed for a closed hand but a wetsuit is not pre-formed for a seated position. They pull tight in the back and shoulders when seated in the kayak.

FYI, Delta Kayaks do not recommend 303 on their boats. It can degrade their finish according to their boat care guide.

All great tips. As mentioned below Delta doesn't recommend 303 on their kayaks as it can damage the finish. Something I think is really important and get overlooked because it's still cold, is sunscreen! It's easy to get a sunburn in the spring because people underestimate the power of the sun because it's not as warm out. Tip for base layers under a drysuit are to go to a thrift store and find some 100% merino wool sweaters, the thin types work best, like office/dress type. You can get them for like 5-10$ and they work great for layering since they're wicking, breathable and don't smell after a hard day. I also find that pretty much every paddling boot/shoe I've tried are made for narrow feet, if you have extra wide feet you will struggle to find something that fits in my experience. If anyone else has this issue, I find doubling up wool socks under my drysuit and then a 3mm neoprene sock that is oversized to go over top of everything keeps my feet warm in 0-3C water. I generally also use 3mm neoprene gloves and they've kept my hands warm in 0-3C temps as well. Though I do miss feeling my paddle itself lol.

Which gloves do you use in winter exactly ? About the extra wide feet stuff : Have you tried Palm shoes ? I have the same issue with NRS shoes that you describe so I have chosen Palm shoes instead. Level6 has a nice option too, but the shop did not have my size in stock so I could not try those sadly...

@@GTN355 i use 3mm neoprene gloves from decathlon. I originally had a pair of level six protons but they started falling apart after 3 uses. The decathlon ones are fairly cheap and are going strong 2 years later. I'll take a look at palm, I know they're a European brand so I haven't seen them in person around here, but I'll keep an eye out.

My experience with wetsuits are when i give classes and show of how to get wet, that when i sit in the kayak again the thin water layer run out and I get f..cold in hot summer time. It's okay when you are in the water but no i don't like cold and go all year drysuit 🥳

I think Goretex is a nice upgrade, but it's far from an essential upgrade. I feel that the other technical materials out there get you 90% of the way to the performance of Goretex. Is it worth splurging to get that last 10% of performance (breathability, durability)?

The most difficult thing when it comes to watersports in general has to be finding the right clothing underneath your drytop/drypants/drysuit to be honest... :( Another thing that really bothers me : Why aren't there any completely waterproof gloves ?! Everyone is selling neopreen based gloves, but at some point those just don't cut it anymore! I am one of those people who likes paddling during fall/winter months whenever I can and for now I am using simply multiple pairs or neopreen based gloves and switch from one pair to the other ones the pair I am wearing gets too wet and cold. There seem to be some options for the sailors out there and some might be useable for paddling but I still need to go to a couple of stores and test some of them so if anyone knows any good paddling options : Please let me know! :)

Baileys is so overpriced just for their name. Many Irish creams sell for half that price and even taste better, like Carolans. P.S. I like gloves even for hot weather, which prevents that sunbaked grizzled look.
