As a full time worker and parent and husband I have 3 good days I can work out in a week. I started with 5x5 programming and started adding in stretches and accessory work and I had points where I learned about a new exercise and was stressed about having to modify all of the programming I was following. I met with a trainer and made some changes. I altered my reps from 5 to 6-10 and changed some of my routine to listen to my body and the style of training it responds to best. Although my diet is still a work in progress I know I’m making muscular physique progress and feeling stronger. Phases are important and I know there have been points I was over training and under eating . Thanks for making it clear for us dummies out here who want to make some honest gains!

I can totally vouch for the high protein to recover from injury theory. I ate nothing but beef for 2 months following a broken leg (which required surgery). Not only did my leg heal very well, I also lost a shockingly small amount of muscle considering I was on the couch for that amount of time!

Started working out in earnest almost three years ago. I’m 5’7” and went down from 285 lbs to 225 lbs. I’m feeling, performing, and looking a lot better. The hardest part is dialing it back. I love going to the gym every day and challenging myself, but I’ve been changing it up to do less intensity and volume. It seems to be helping, which is something I learned from your show.

I have to pause it and comment. I was thinking as the video is going about how I know what I NEED to do. I have been lifting for 23 years consistently BUT I struggle SO hard to be objective with myself and always want to do more than I can tolerate and then hit a lot of walls once my body is fed up with it. But as soon as I was thinking this, y’all started talking to me. 😂 I definitely fall into the fitness fanatic category. One day I hope to find the optimal training/recovery balance. I love what y’all are doing and love your straight forward no fluff videos. Thanks!!

Not sure how much you guys believe in the universe putting certain things in your life for a reason, but I woke up this morning, decided to not lift, went to an Orangetheory workout instead, and just wasn’t having a good workout and started thinking; how much do I need to keep working out to maintain and even look a little better than I have previously, without losing muscle. I have such a hard time wrapping my mind around working out a little less but keep my muscle. I NEEDED this today. Appreciate it, like always!

I see small dudes in the gym doing bro splits, I'm big so when they ask me for advice I tell them, you're doing a faggots workout, do full body 3 or more times a week or as much as you can recover. Switch to power lifting at least once a year and rotate into more volume from there. They all argue with me. From this point forward I will just say ok tiny and walk away.

I always had the hardest time building muscle. I would constantly overeat and over train and never felt like I was making any progress towards my goals. It wasn't until Mind Pump that I was able to learn how to balance intensity, volume and frequency to really put on muscle. Didn't expect to see Alice Cooper. Haha I think that there's a lot of potential value in making fitness part of your every day lifestyle. Keeping dumbbells and a pull-up bar in the house and practicing the exercises a bit each day can make a difference. Brush your teeth in a squat. Do a set of pull-ups every time you pass under the bar. Stretch a little in bed before you sleep and after you wake up. Do a minute of aerobics and a minute of mobility after you get out of bed. Walk around on your toes. Practice abdominal breathing while you walk and drive. If you're watching something, do push-ups during the commercials (or before what you're watching if there aren't commercials). Etc. So many opportunities to get some effective exercise.

I value you guys fitness advice so much! I am a former cardio queen who started focusing on strength training and your advice has helped me make a smooth and confident transition. Question… is it possible to get stronger without gaining muscle? I’ve been making a concerted effort to eat more protein and lift heavier but I’m not sure if it’s enough to build muscle. Or am I just maintaining my current muscle mass? I’m probably eating about 50-75% of my bodyweight in protein grams. Before I was probably around 25% (yikes I know).
@shellyturner2766

Check episode January 2021, how to know if you're building muscle. They answer this question regularly. Yes, to some extent you can get stronger without building muscle because strength is a skill and their are CNS adaptations. Your protein may be too low, but you have to consider your body fat percentage, weight, body composition goal, etc. Happy lifting!

Step 3 is important for all noobs/ young amateur lifters to keep in mind. All these useless, minor movements that their favorite heroes on IG/YT do, they end up repeating themselves, when they don't even have the bare basic fundamentals as compound movements honed down. See it all the time at commercial gyms. I just nod my head in disappointment.
