Out of all the gym leaders in Pokemon, which ones are the worst at their job? These are my top 5 easiest gym leaders I've battled in any Pokemon game, what are yours? Let me know! Follow on Twitter: / abttp_
+Mr. Sewaddle I remember gettin to Vermilion and before entering SS Anne bein like: let me go to diglett cave and get ma diglett.. then i went to SS Anne, grinded it a bit and swept Lt Surge
He's really hard in Yellow tbh. Partially due to level cap, and partially due to his Raichu knowing frickin Mega Punch and Mega Kick. But in Fire Red/Leaf Green 3 Magnitudes from Graveler was enough to crush Surge.
I just had a flash back of heartgold. I swear i was grinding for a dratini for 2 hours to get some type advantage. Then i leveled up 5 levels and miraculously beat her
Brawley. Has a gym with pokemon that only have Normal, Fighting, and Psychic moves Live next to the only cave in Hoenn where you can catch Sableye, which is immune to JUST normal, fighting, and psychic
shiww zzheng Oh wow, that foresight will surely make his Bulk Up hit. Brawly's AI is pretty bad, so he'll spam Foresight and Bulk Up at the worst times. He'll often use Foresight three times in a row against grass-types, even.
also i believe the gyms get progressively easier the second gym was actually the most challenging rock type gym leader so i guess that may be a redeeming quality if that helps
It has been explained in the Anime that gym leaders assess the skill level of the trainer they're facing by the number of badges and thus use different Pokemon. So who knows, Falkner might be a badass leader if he were allowed to use his proper team. Or he just sucks who knows :I
This was sort of hinted at in the game too. In B2W2, Cheron uses weak pokemon, when a) you already know he has stronger pokemon and b) they mention how he wasn't using his actual team. So, this is sort of confirmed both in anime and in-game now.
Nintendo dose a poor job with Grass type gyms in general, Grass type pokemon do well when they are fucking with your status, leach seeding you and draining your life. Breloom with effect spore is awesome.
Wulfric in X & Y. He was the last gym leader of the game, so you'd think he'd also be the hardest of them. But no, because everyone, and I mean EVERYONE one-shotted all his pokemon. Nintendo, come on, who DOESN'T have a fire, fighting, rock, or steel type at that point in the game?!
***** Its not that Chiko is bad, it just has competition from all the other grass types in Jotho. (thats on of the main reasons it doesnt get picked) And who can pass up a early game fire type(Cyndaquil) lol.
Lt surge and brawly. Lt surge: makes electric type gym, next to a diglet cave. Brawly: his pokemon know normal, fighting and psychic moves, and his gym is next to a cave which has sableyes which are immune to normal, psychic, and fighting moves.
+PikachuTheRandomVideoMaker I hate when people catch pokemon just to beat a specific gym like really, that doesn't matter, both are really tough when you use pokemon you actually want.
Idk. I'd say the games have gone up and down in terms of difficulty. While playing through Blue version on the VC, everything was an utter pushover even with pretty low levels. Meanwhile, Platinum and White 1 are still kind of challenging if I don't grind. After that things get easy again with B/W 2 and all the 6th gen games.
NR Awesome; Erika is a really easy gym leader. In fact, one of the easiest in the Pokémon red, blue and green versions and also the remakes too. She did get harder in gold, silver and crystal but it wasn't by much as you were already as high or higher than her Pokémon by then and you were also the Johto champion too
i also feel ashamed. i chose chikorita... it was so bad that i had to catch a couple of unowns and just hoped the hidden power was electric or something...
Don't worry I had my but handed to me by Elsa when black and white first came out and lost to her 4 times (freak in her emolgas aerial aced my pignite over and over again and he was the only pokemon I used)
Kaji Phoenix Regain your pride and defeat him! Also, avenge Cyndaquil! Only then will you not feel like an embarrassment to the Pokemon community. And your welcome. I really like your avatar and I want it for myself. :3
Grass types can be very powerful if duel typed and put with the right moves. Same with bug types being able to defeat one of the most op types in the game. I normally choose a grass type (that excludes gen 4 where I chose piplup to make the elite four easier).
I hate to say this, but in the fight with korrina (x/y) I used my honedge AND IT TOOK NO DAMAGE BECAUSE ALL HER ATTACKS WERE USELESS! ... thanks for your attention.
Whitney... Oh, you mean easiest gym leaders? Well.. MILTANK! ROLLOUT! *Critical hit!* *Cyndiquil fainted!* And that, my friends, is why I hate Whitney.
+Daniel Rodri-wait, why isn't the tag thing popping up? Ah well, back to what I was gonna say. Woh woh woh! Slow down son! I also guess that... puts on sunglasses... punctuation is overrated too. WAAAAAAAAH!!!!
Lt. Surge from Yellow comes to mind. He has only one Pokemon: a Raichu. This makes him easy pickings for a Sandshrew or Diglestt, especially since you'd just recieved the Dig TM, which, at the time, had the same base power as Earthquake. Then there's Wulfric. I don't even remember what he had because my underleveled unevolved Fennekin one-shot everything. He even says at the start of the battle that it would probably be the easiest fight we'd ever have.
Worst gym is Wulfric IMO. All you need is ethier Mega charizard either version or Mega Lucario which both pokemon you can instantly receive and his team is fucking baby food X3. not to mention his Cryogonal has bad defense. his avalugg has bad special defense, his abomasnow is 4X weak to fire and they are all slow as fuck pokemon X_X. they should of at least given his abomasnow the abomasite to make him look more intimidating!
JUNKYNITE He also was on my list. Here the list is: The WEAKEST IMO: #10 Every single rock-type gym in existance They are all effectively the same. Maybe it's hard if you take the fire starters, but as a girl who either takes water or grass type starters, it's EASY. #9 Falkner Just what you said. #8 Olympia and Wulfric They are at the same spot because I have the same issue with both. They are 7th and 8th gym leaders and have THREE POKEMON. Is this some kind of joke? This tradition debuted in gen 5, and I hope it ends soon because it just makes it waaayyy too easy. How about this Team to make them harder? Olympia: Gallade, Guardevoir, Sigilyph, Metagross, Meowstic; Wulfric: Abomasnow, Walrein, Jynx, Mamoswine, Froslass, Weavile #7 Norman OK, why does everyone say this battle is so hard? His gym leader position has the same issue as his signature Pokemon Slaking. The ability. I guess it was included to keep Slaking from being unstoppable, but it didn't only stop it from being unstoppable, but made it one of the weakest Pokemon in the game. Its stats are good, but effectively, it has only half of its HP, Attack/Special Attack, and Defense/Special Defense thanks to its freaking ability. And people complain about Regigigas. This gym was actually very easy to me. #6 Giovanni This guy is not my final eighth gym leader on this list, but he is the most dissapointing. You've fought a Team of villains, and now, it is time for the final battle with the boss. Sounds cool - but then you realize he only uses incredibly weak Pokemon. Seriously - a Rhydon is the strongest Pokemon a gym leader in Kanto has! #5 Drayden My next pick shows perfectly how dissapointing last gym leaders can be. He only has three Pokemon, two of them being awfully weak, and one, his Haxorus, lacking good moves (X-Scissor is its only move with a base power over 70). I mean, he has a goddamn Haxorus but uses it so poorly that all you need to beat it up is a strong Ice-type. I was like "OMG! Eighth gym! Dragon-type gym! This is going to be so hard!" And all I got was this joke of a gym leader. #4 Byron On my Monotype Ice run, I've beat him up easily with Ice types. He's just incredibly weak. He said he is a challenge, compared to his son (who is the first gym leader), but I've never actually had one of my Pokemon faint and never needed to use a healing item in the gym battle. #3 Flannery I beat her up with Ice types. Nothing but Ice types. And all had a weakness to fire. There's really no excuse of her being weak. #2 Blaine Again, just what you said. #1 Tate and Liza The only gym leaders that have never inflicted damage on my Pokemon. Seriously!! They only have two Pokemon, Solrock and Lunatone, both having a base stat total of 440, which is insanely bad. The only thing that's standing out about them is that their Pokemon are a bit overleveled, but that does not make up for them only having two weak Pokemon as the seventh gym leaders!!! Even the trainers in the gym are a bigger challenge than freaking Tate & Liza!
***** Actually they only had Xatu and Claydol in Emerald, a game made to be harder than the originals. And I did not have trouble in Emerald either, I one-shotted all of their Pokemon. In Ruby, Saphire, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Saphire, they only had two, as I said, base 440 stat total Pokemon. And in Emerald they may be harder but are still easy as fuck and get one-shotted all the time. I have never not one-shotted one of their Pokemon.
Funny how Falkner uses a Pidgey and a Pidgeotto in the Games, yet he uses a Dodrio, Hoothoot, and Pidgeot in the anime! Seriously, What's up with Dat!?
Dramatic_Gaming Well, YES! I mean in the Games, Falkner is cake, while in the Anime, he at least puts up more of a fight. Although Yes! I Know he's the first Gym Leader you face, and the Earlier Gyms are supposed to be easy for newcomers, but still.....
actually its been confirmed that gym leaders use less Pokemon and lower level Pokemon the less gym badges a challenger has, so he used more Pokemon in the anime most likely because Ashe had more badges then when we challenged him in the game basically (although i cant remember how many Ashe had at the time since i havent watched episode where he challenged Falkner in forever.
because dodrio and Pidgeot are both very high level for the first gym so they had no choice but to use pidgey and Pidgeotto. but I wonder why he didn't have a hoothoot too
Bugsy from the 2nd generation game is easy if you have a good strong fire or flying type. He has a Metapod & Kakuna. Scyther, however, could be a pain, but as long as your fire or flying type is strong enough, he can be easy.
***** I beat him up with my Bayleef at Lvl 18. Literally nothing else. And I only used one super potion in the Remakes. In the original games, I did not even need a healing item.
they can be difficult if you don't know what you're doing. i know when i first had Blue and Silver i lost to both Brock and Faulkner sometimes and sometimes multiple times. i think i even lost to Roxanne sometimes too.
For me Wulfric was one of the most pathetic, I mean, all I needed was a Delpox and boom, done. I hope in the Hoenn and future Sinnoh remakes we get some nice challenge out of the Gym Leaders again.
To be honest, any Gym Leader is easy when you have the right Type advantages. I personally only had troubles with Gym Battles when I get a new Gen Pokemon game where I'm not familiar with some of the new Pokemon's Types (mostly duel types)
Well some gym leaders can be a pain in the arse even if you have the right types. Take candice from gen 4 for example, her team has a medicham (psychic/fighting) along with a Pokemon much more overleveled compared to the area/trainers you're in.
I personally never had problems with that Gym. But I know for a fact that everyone has troubles with certain Gyms where as some do not so maybe it is pretty difficult but I was just over leveled at that time? I don't remember, its been awhile since I last played 4th Gen. However I do find it extremely odd that she have that Pokemon when shes a Ice Type Gym Leader.
I'm going to presume you chose a Chimchar? It's easier with a fire type but there weren't many options (Piplup was my starter due to making the elite four easier). Also some of the gyms/elite four members do have Pokemon that are not specifically their type. Flint had buneary, steelix and drifloon on him as well as the two fire types. Candice I struggled on due to being underleved and I didn't have the right types. I also struggled on the fighting one (sorry forgot her name, she's only the third leader and I beat her ages ago) due to underleveled Pokemon.
Actually, I also started with Piplup, I'm starting to think I was overleveled since I don't recall struggling at any point of the game. But if that was the case it must have taken me forever to beat the game due to how slow it was plus adding up all that grinding from wild Pokemon.....yikes 0_0 Anyways I can understand that some of them battles could be difficult even with the right Pokemon, it just doesn't seem right to judge how bad a Gym was simply due being able to be be swept by certain types when most Gyms fall under that category. What was with 4th Gen Gym Leaders and Elites having odd out of Types Pokemon? Cynthia I can understand since shes the Champion but the others not so much, although if I recall they changed Flints Team around to all Fire Types in Platinum so I guess I can let it slide, lol.
+BlueWolfGamer I spent more time filling my pokedex than actually grinding, it took too long (unless I was after a specific Pokemon). I managed to beat the elite four underleveled thanks to my empoleon. I am planing to start the game again but I'm waiting for my brother to get pearl/platinum to trade across my dragonite. I also find it unfair that in platinum Flint changed. It made the e4 much too easy.
Brandon I used to watch your videos and it always made me laugh. Dude keep up the good work and always keep your head up man 😂😂😂 sorry I just found ur channel again I lost it a while a ago and Its great to see your videos still doing awesome
In my opinion, Cilan Cress and Chili were the absolute worst. I honestly expected I'd have to fight all three of them individually, that would have been a better challenge, but nope. Just fight one and you get a badge. They're so bad they didn't even show up to fight Team Plasma like the actual good gym leaders in Black and White.
IcycleCrystalWorld Doesn't exactly excuse them. The Pan trio when fully evolved are pretty tough, and the shadow triad aren't the toughest people out there.
Another thing that made them easy is that girl form the Dreamyard who gave you a pokemon strong against them. And anyway, there wasn't enough sages for them to battle alone.
Here's my thoughts on this list: 5: I sorta struggled with him, but he's pretty easy. Rematch team's a little more fun, though. 4: I still struggle with that Nosepass. Rock Tomb's a little more kooky than you might think. Also, rematch team's more fun :) 3. Swords Danced Farfetch'd Acrobatics. 3 hit KO. Depressing. 2. ...yeah, I never struggled with this guy. Gym's painfully easy to get through too. 1. Haven't fought him yet in Yellow, I'll give you my thoughts soon. EQ his butt. My easiest gym leaders? Wulfric, possibly Viola, pretty much all in ORAS...
Falkner was actually a pain for me. Often. He has a power advantage over Chikorita outright and his Mud-Slap can whittle down Cyndaquil/Quilava. I often went to Dark Cave and caught a Geodude, or traded Bellsprout for Onix, and leveled either or both till they learned Rock Throw for no hassle.
I know, right?! I just commented on her just now on this video! She wasn't the weakest Gym Leader though, but I never really had a problem with her either. I have a friend that said he had a hard problem with her and her Miltank and it using Rollout. It never got the chance to use it on me. I played her a month ago on Crystal and I had a Pidgeotto in the lead in my team and one if it moves was Whirlwind and I used it as soon as the battle started and switched her Clefairy with her Miltank and took out that first and it never used Rollout and then I swept her Clefairy with my Quilava. I'll admit, she did beat my Pidgeotto though. I forgot what moves she used though. But I beat Whitney this way though.
Having started with a Chikorita in the original Gold/Silver/Crystal games, I'll have to disagree with you on Faulkner. He was really hard to beat even though I caught a Geodude in that frigging pitch black cave just outside Violet City and levelled it up so it had Rock Throw. I agree with you on the others though, and I also think Lt. Surge was one the easier gym leaders. All I had to do if I was at a type disadvantage was catch a Diglett in Diglett Cave and I was good to go. Or a Geodude in Mt. Moon. Or both.
Great list, I agree with each of these entries. Falkner's team is very disappointing since it consists of one evolutionary line, and there are no Johto Pokemon on his team. Why not put a Hoothoot on his team at least? Any of the Rock-type gym leaders, except Brock, would be a good candidate for this list. I would choose either Roxanne or Roark. Roxanne is a good choice because at least Roark has a team of 3 Pokemon. I totally forgot Ramos was even a gym leader. His team is definitely a pushover like most Grass-type specialists. At this point in the game, your team most likely consists of fully evolved Pokemon and Grass-types have a lot of weaknesses. It doesn't help that none of his team can combat any of the weaknesses like Flying, Fire, and Ice. Brycen would've been my number one pick. His team consists of 2 Pokemon we already battled multiple times with the other trainers in the gym. So they're no surprises. Beartic is the only unfamiliar face, but he is only the evolved form of Chubchoo who we also fought against in the gym. I totally forgot Blaine and I agree with his position. There are so many Water-types in Kanto and his team doesn't have a moveset that can combat the Water weakness. Just use Surf the entire battle and his team will turn into a pile of ash.
most to all Gym Leaders were easy to veteran players. All you need is a decent understanding of type advantages, and seasoned players seldom needed even that. So yeah, depending on your preferences of Pokemon you train, some are bound to be way easier than others. For example, people almost unanimously call out Whitney in Gen 2 as one of the most frustrating trainers in the game, but the game gives you plenty of ways to defeat her. You can trade for a machop in the the Goldenrod mart, you can use headbutt to catch a Heracross in Azalea town, or you can travel to the route ahead and catch a Nidoran and teach it double kick Bayleef trainers can status Miltank easily and it also has access to screens if I remember correctly. A Gastly caught in Sprout Tower can Spite Miltanks Rollouts until it's run out of PP, Drowzee, Gastly or Hoot Hoot can use Hypnosis... You can catch a rock type in the Cave between Azalea and Violet..anyway the point is, it's all about perspective. The Hardest trainer for some is the Easiest to others
Roxanne was actually really hard for me to beat when I played Emerald and Omega Ruby because in both games I chose Torchic and wasn't very smart about the type disadvantages. When I got Omega Ruby, I "cheated" because when I got the game, it came with a free Dragonite that was already level 50. It didn't obey me too much but it got me through the gym. After that I never really used it, even when I could get Pokemon level 50 or under to obey me
I love Pokemon Diamond and Pearl but I think the main problem I have with it is the fact that none of the gym leaders go in order by difficulty making the game unbalanced. It's like the 3rd gym leader is hard then suddenly the last gym leader is easier to beat than the first.
Yeah torterra is a pretty damn powerfull pokemon. His defense is really high + his attack is high. I dont care about speed since he can learn earthquake. Anyway if you had to face a flying or ghost type I just used leafstorm :P
To be totally honest, my answer is going to be different from somebody else's answer. Early gym leader difficulty is often based on what starter you chose, and how you are deciding to play the game. If you are looking for specific pokemon to fill your team, you may have a harder time (assuming first playthrough) because you won't know WHAT those pokemon will be, or WHEN you will get them. If you're one of the types that catches everything you see and trains every pokemon you get on your first run through, you're going to be underleveled most likely. Any of these things can be a factor in making gym leaders harder for one person over another. Or, if you're a pokemon veteran, you know what types will be inherently good and what pokemon on each route may prove useful down the road. It's easier to pick ahead of time what to train and when. For example, if there's a grass type gym coming up, don't use your fire type until you get to the gym, because your others won't have a chance to sweep for EXP like your fire type will. that way, you don't have an unbalanced team. No matter which way you slice it, what makes a gym leader difficult or easy is entirely subjective and will be different for every person.
4:05 I swept that gym leader with serperior and it wasn't super overleveled either it was only 1 point higher than his strongest pokemon(by the end of the battle). Set up a light screen on the venelice coiled up used, used a full restore and sweped the team(considering he broke the 1 full restore per pokemon rule on the beartic I don't feel guilty about it).
Winona DESTORYED me with that god damn Dragon Dance Altaria, and i had NO pokemon who could learn Ice Beam, you think the best idea would be to grinf, but i just hope for a paralasys
Brock was hard cuz ur very limited on his weakness Folkner is cake regardless of weakness Roxanne was fair, maybe cuz i didn't grind or Rock tomb was a bitch The miner guy? He was fair aswell Cranidos is annoying but CMON this is the 3rd first Rock gym Trio from B/W Were bad because of how limited u are in general to pokemon Viola was freaking easy
I always thought Erica from Gen 1 was the easier because you can easily have a Charizard by that point, which will destroy her effortlessly, or you can catch a Growlithe or Vulpix right outside the city and use that to destroy her.
lt surge, stationed right beside diglett cave, catch one and you have immunity to all moves except maybe quick attack by his raichu but being ground does baby damage
When I was fighting Roxanne, we were down to our last Pokemon. My starter Torchic had 1-6 hp and had to ember Nosepass one more time. It was down to 1 hp due to sturdy, before I gave up. Nosepass was burned and fainted.
You know that would have made it interesting? If the gym leader you face first is based on what starter you have. They would have the type advantage, so a bulbasaur would face Blaine and a Chramander would face Misty.
Well, to judge a Gym Leader based on their type is kinda dumb.... see, whatever way you look at it, alot of them are super easy to beat because Gym Leaders only train a single type of Pokemon (with the exception of Blue). And even if you're a young kid just barely getting into Pokemon, that guy waiting for you at every entrance of the Gym will tell you what types of Pokemon to get so you can go find them and make the game easier for yourself. The Onix trade was there on purpose as well as the many water types before the 1st Hoenn gym, and in the original Gold/Silver, you weren't required to the Bellsprout Tower first, so you could just go right into the Gym and challenge Falkner, which are why his Pokemon are at an extreme low level. And I actually like most of the Gym Leaders here :/ (except Roxanne) so idk I just think they don't deserve to be labeled as "worst" (you could have said "weren't a challenge in my opinion") seeing as many other Gym Leaders also live near Pokemon with type advantage to their Gym (LT. Surge is near Diglett's cave, there's Litleos close to the route by Viola's Gym, Timburrs near Lenora's Gym, ect.)
Oh the memories of Pokemon silver, gold and crystal... The best pokemon game ever... I remeber playing it over and over again for 3-4 years when I was a little kid.... My favourite gen 2 pokemons were and still are: Umbreon, Scizor, Hitmontop, Steelix, Misdreavus, Kingdra and Ho-Oh..... And I will always be frustrated because I have never owned Octillery.... Once I saw Remoraid but wasn't able to catch it because I had too strong pokemons :( Not that it's my favourite pokemon, but it's one of the pokemons that I never owned and I've had almost all pokemons in my life...
Personally, I'd say.. Literally all Sinnoh Gym Leaders!!! Roark could be swept easily, Gardenia was a HUGE pushover if you chose Chimchar, Maylene was easy because her Lucario can be OHKOed by a Monferno or Infernape, Wake was easy to defeat (despite the hard puzzle) if you caught Shinx and trained it (Same goes with Budew), Fantina was just a pushover (despite her Drifblum's Aftermath), Byron was easy if you had a fire, ground, or fighting time, which at the time you would, Candice was EASY if you had a fire, fighting, steel, or rock type, which you probably did at the time, and Volkner was just a push-over!
***** Wait... You agree that even Gardenia was a pushover, and you chose Piplup? Well, considering you could've already had a flying type then *cough cough* STARLY *cough cough* that's understandable.
Even worse in BW2 where you can get a Riolu before the first gym and a Magnemite before the second. Train them up to a Lucario and Magnezone and you can sweep the rest of the game.
erggrerg requires a LOT of level grinding unless you just focus on your starter. I like raising my pokemon evenly, thank you very much. I'll admit tho, that event beldum DEFINITELY helped against her in ORAS.
Torchic evolves at level 16. Roxanne's Ace, Nosepass, is level 15. (at least it was in Gen 3) You can battle the trainers on the route above before challenging the gym, which is logical since they are weaker. Basically what I am going to say is that if you are a trainer who emphasize on using the starter Pokemon, you can beat it with any of the 3 since the chicken would be on its second stage by then. Alternatively, a Seedot with Bullet Seed (given as a TM before 1st gym), an absorbing Lotad or a Wingull with Water Gun (both by level up). Any of these at level around 10 can 1-2HKO the Lv14 Geodude just fine, though with Wingull you should watch out for Nosepass's Rock Tomb.
-.- I like your videos too much...I like your voice too much...if you had lets plays, i'd develop an unhealthy obssession with your channel (In the most non creepy way possible) *Grabs you and pleads* AMG Please tell me you'll make some pokmeon lets plays!!!!!
i had trouble with falkner because soulsilver was my first game so i didn't know how to catch anything (until my sister taught me after i beat falkner) and i chose chickorita.
Blaine probably realized how stupid putting a fire-type gym on an island without a bridge or ferry connection to the mainland was, so he hid the key to his gym in the secret house.
He disabled comments on that video to stop people raging because of him bashing on piplup saying " ITS WEAK TO ELECTRIC FIGHTING AND GROUND first off no it's not weak to electric ( least not till gen 6) and you have moves to cover torterra and infernape
+superiortoalll it's true though and pikachu is actually weak overall and I hate that because raichu looks like a beast but he gets taken out in 3-4 hits
In my opinion I think maylene from gen IV was pretty hard even though I had a staravia, girafarig, and 4 others because of meditate learning drain punch and her full heal when machoke is nearly fainted and not to mention her lucario which is just op
