Ewing was too good for them to tank. They should have made better tanking efforts when Ewing was hurt. Look at the Spurs. They only ever tanked once in my lifetime and they got 5 rings in a tiny market. Those in charge should be fired ;)
He never played with another hofer during the period of the Knicks contending years , the only one he did play with who was Bernard King , tenure with Patrick Ewing wasn't when the Knicks were apex contenders ,and was only for 1 season .That's Ewing's stunted growth ,he simply didn't have the adequate help needed to fulfill winning a championship . Another potential Hofer who Patrick Ewing played alongside Mark Jackson wasn't considered worthy enough to be compensated financially amongst the top tier point guards when his contract ran out which certainly had a hand in the missing titles on Ewing's resume as well as Jackson's .
It always amazes me when people unlike your content. You obviously put in the work as far as research, knowledgeable of the game, editing be on point... what's to unlike??
Biggest stunt was the end of the real King of NY. If Ewing had King by his side, the NBA may have gotten it's goal, another 💍 in the biggest market. Must have been karma? NY seems cursed. Even the Nets 🤣
The 1997 New York Knicks ruined everything. That Brawl in the 1997 playoffs vs the Miami Heat. That was when the Knicks started to decline. That was Ewing's last healthy season too!
Imagine how hyped Dwight howard was....imagine all the gifts dwight had... Now that you have that image, give him a mid-range jumper, better hands, better awareness, better footwork, more toughness and a better off-hand...that's PAtrick Ewing. It Pat Ewing came into the league in the mid-2000s like Dwight, Pat would be looked at like the next Shaq. Always got love for Ewing. Wish he had better luck. Imagine if he somehow was a Spur with TD, PArker, Bowen, Manu, etc...instead of David Robinson. If i analyze his whole game on both ends... i dont know if I have ever seen a player like him. He was like if you made Karl Malone a 7' center. LeBron's best type of sidekick is low-key an athletic big who set great screens, catches every pass, rolls smartly and finishes on both sides with either hand, but can also hit pick and pop jumpers. Look in 2003, LeBron and Boozer, two young dudes, ran Pick and Roll like veterans. It was fun to watch. Then, LeBrons best sidekick in three straight playoffs was ANDERSON VAREJAO who he always hit on pick and rolls. I wish he could have played with a more dynamic big, earlier... like if Boozer stayed, if Amare went to CLE, if Bosh was more of a threat to dunk anytime on anyone, instead of mainly being a 18 foot threat in MIA. I think LeBron's best fit out of all the historic teams to this date, in my opinion, would have been to take Steve Nash's place at PG of the Suns with Amare, Shawn, Joe Johnson, etc...if he has all those shooters and a roll man like Amare....nobody would have ever seen anything like that. My off-topic-ass point is, Pat Ewing would have been fun to watch with LeBron. He could have tossed it to him in the post and had hiim get his own, he could have found himinside on PnRs or he could have him spread the floor with 15-20 foot jumpers Sorry, this is what happens when youre a millenial basketball fan from Akron. You imagine what it would have been like if LeBron played with _______ or ________.
Patrick Ewing had the best one hand jam thank you ma'am dunks of all time if anyone can prove me wrong more power to you but I can't say I wasn't a next friend I was at Seattle supersonic fan all because of my stunning growth Shawn Kemp and only reason why Shawn Kemp was my favorite basketball player of all time is because I used to play 101 with a good friend of mine that used to beat my ass because I was fresh off the boat from Jamaica didn't know what basketball was but over the time and years I became a beast so my story goes when we still have the upper deck basketball cards we used to play 101 and I've told him the first player that I pick from open the upper deck will be my favorite player and sure enough it was Shawn Kemp
It was a damn shame what happened to him...he never had a legitimate shot when he was in his prime..MJ shattered a lot of dreams, and EWING was a victim... which goes to show why people considered MJ the GOAT..but I digress.. because the KNICKS were just dumb..how you have a generational talent in the mecca of basketball and not give this man the tools to beat teams back then?..the man was a WARRIOR who deserved better...much respect to MR.EWING..he is still a winner..and his story is a testement of heart and determination and shows why he is a great coach..
You take Ewing over Clyde Frazier? Respectfully disagree, Frazier was one of the best clutch players of all time, one of the greatest Finals Game 7s all time. He always gets forgotten because he won his titles in that weird early 70s era.
the Knicks have a big responsibility in Ewing's lack of rings. They never built an adequate team around him. However, I feel many people overestimate the importance of rings won in evaluating a player. Championships are won by teams, not by single players. Several different factors involved. Winning is important but it's not the only thing that should be considered
the knicks in the ninetys built a good team around him oakland greg anthony anthony mason mcdaniels john starks derek harper it was a strong team especially defensively its just choke jobs missed layups and other unlucky moments
Ewing was expecting a bump on that miss layup Antonio or Dale stayed back. He put a little extra for the contact that never came then there goes the back iron. You’re not gonna stop MJ but I think Xavier McDaniel helped neutralize Pippen (took the Bulls to game 7 in 92). I also feel Riley should take some blame. If Starks is on fire in game 6 only Mason or Oakley set picks (no need for a P&R option since Olajuwon is good at covering ground on a switch). Game 7 I blame Riley and Starks because most people know you get out of a slump by attacking the basket and free throws. Because of injury Ewing’s prime was when he first got in the league up to about 90-91.
I agree with you. Riley made roaster like what he likes. But doesn't have solution about offence. If ewing was with mark jackson and X-man,one more good shooter through his career, he would have a ring.
@@dontdoittoyoself6786 awww.. that's cute... Olajuwon won the Finals MVP while averaging 27/9/4/4... but those % numbers you threw out there sure tell the whole story.. hahahaha. Hakeem was 25/10/7/3 in that Game 7 while Ewing was 17/10/1/2... but focus on that fg% buddy
@Malaki727 It's also back when men played the game. Today's players are simply unlikeable. They're selfish, self absorbed and soft. Imagine a guy today playing hurt like Patrick did?
Growing up in NYC and a die- hard Knicks fan, I respected Patrick's heart and effort that he displayed on the court but having to keep trying to fight through Jordan's Bulls teams in an already tough Eastern Conference took its toll. One of the reasons Patrick didn't win a ring outside of Michael Jordan was Pat Riley ego for keeping John starks in game 7 instead of putting in Hubert Davis or Rolando Blackman .
I agree completely. And I'm riding wit ya on them Knickerbockers. We will get that championship... eventually. And they better give Pat a ring too, just because....
I loved starks but everyone knew how streaky he was. Brilliant game 6 horrid game 7. I'm shocked more people don't blame starks like they blame Charles Smith. Starks game was all time worse in history of the finals & it was a game 7. They just need that game they win it all Ewing gets his ring. Smith got stuffed excruciatingly like 8 times in a row & is hard to watch. I know it was a huge game to not lose home court & to beat mj they worked so hard all year for hoke court. Which is so easily taken away in one playoff game. Anyway the Knicks everyone knew were done in 93 as they just could not beat the bulls in Chicago & usually got destroyed. Which they did. I remember after the Smith game nobody in my family wanted to watch anymore. Lol. I'm not kidding the Knicks were still alive but beating mj in Chicago was a sad formality of not gonna happen.
He’s in my Top 10 Centers all time, Ewing was a beast and never cheated the game. The injuries, bad press, lack of talented teammates, whatever, it didn’t matter. You knew that if you saw that box fade, knee pads, and #33 you were getting your money’s worth. He’s always thrown in with the Malones, Stockton’s, Barkley’s etc., but to me Ewing had a legitimate excuse. He’s the HOFer that played with the least amount of talent all time. Who was his 2nd best teammate? Oakley? Starks? And Pat was taking them to the Finals. Idc what nobody says, you can’t think of 90s basketball without Ewing.
I hear you but he just wasn't as good as Robinson, O'Neal, and Olajuwon to me. Any year you wanna name in the 90's he was always the 3rd best center in the league never the defacto best
@@vizionaryentertainment8464 I’m confused, where did I say he was the “de facto best”? Reread what I wrote, please. I said he’s in my Top 10 Centers all time. To which you replied by listing 4 great centers who were his peers. My point was that Patrick Ewing was a competitor, so what you had to say about his contemporaries was irrelevant.
@@johnnyblingg In your statement you said hes thrown in with barkley and Malone and I thinks fair. Ewing doesn't really have a legitimate excuse for the simple fact that he made it to the promise land in '94 and just didn't get it done. Hakeem didn't have a 2nd superstar that series either so it was fair game. He belongs in the Malone category.
@@vizionaryentertainment8464 Ok, so you disagree with my point for being included with the Malones, Stocktons, Barkley’s, etc., which is a completely different point from your first reply. Now first, you disagree with him not being in with said other greats, but did nothing to refute my point; Patrick Ewing had the least amount of talent around him for a superstar of all time. The only thing you did was name the only other superstar who has done it in modern times (post-ABA merger):Hakeem (for his first ring) and Bill Walton. The only other to do it before Hakeem and Bill Walton was Wilt Chamberlain. You’re killing Ewing’s stature for something that had only happened 3 times in the NBA’s 80+ years of existence. And you’re grading him against players I didn’t compare him to. I’d never make the argument that he’s better than the players you listed, but I do feel Patrick Ewing is better than Barkley, Malone, and Stockton and other players from the era who were affected by the Jordan Effect. Patrick Ewing had 2 NBA Finals appearances in his NBA career, where he was either the de facto leader or elder statesmen for those teams and THEY BOTH HAPPENED ON THE KNICKS. Malone was playing next to another HOFer in Stockton, Chuck asked for help and got KJ (who was an all star), and I’m a bigger fan of Barkley but I’m being completely honest about legacy ranking. The 2 best players Patrick Ewing played with was John Starks and Oakley. While other legends played with Top 50 players in their prime, like The Dream (w/ Clyde) and Mailman (w/Stockton), Pat was with players who’d probably wouldn’t crack the Top 300 and he still made it up there to the Finals twice, which is more than Barkley, Iverson, and Reggie Miller, and equal to Malone and Stockton’s Finals appearances. I’d say Pat Ewing is the middle bridge that separates the Malones and Barkleys, from the Robinsons and the Hakeems. I’ll even take it a step further on the only player on your list who I’m gonna take a shot at: David Robinson. David Robinson got his two rings, not in his prime, but only after he got Tim Duncan. If you take out the rings pre-Duncan, David Robinson’s resume won’t come close to Pat Ewing, it wouldn’t even be better than Reggie Miller, if we’re being straight up.
This one is simple. HE PLAYED IN THE JORDAN ERA!!! Had his shot against Houston came up short. End of story. As a side note: he came into the league when the East was ruled by Boston and Detroit. Great career, NO STUNTED GROWTH. He had to deal with better players and better teams.
I always said Bernard king getting injured hurt the Knicks and ewing.they never replaced his scoring or talent.those Knicks teams was not a smooth oiled machine on offense and Ewing was all they could ever count on.he needed help.also if he was healthy in 99 against the Spurs they would have had a great chance to win.he really needed that 1999 🏆
Not to mention Worthy and Perkins.Check the lineup: PG: Jimmy Black SG Jordan SF Worthy, PF Perkins C Ewing.....who beats THAT team? A front line of 6'9", 6'10" with a 7'5" reach and the most intimidating 7 footer in college history.
Stunted Growth: Early 90s Knicks 1. Never could find a true SF/3 2. Late to the Bad Boy Piston Imitation Game / Late to the NBA changes in the 90s 3. Inconsistent PG Play. 4. Lack of outside shooting
Also: lack of an offensive game plan. It was almost always "Ewing or bust" they had no movement and took forever to get into their offensive sets. You would think the former coach of the showtime Lakers would be able to implement a somewhat decent offensive scheme.
If he had a player as good as Pippen he’d have at least two rings. In 94, Hakeem was just better. But the Knicks still took them to 7. I’m glad I was young in 94 because Idk how you can get over a game 7 finals loss.
Great job as always. 1 thing us Knicks fans remember. 96-97. Ewing was still healthy enough to be a threat. Houston was improving. Oak was still a beast and LJ was a mismatch. Knicks up 3-1 on the Heat until David Stern f's things up by suspending half the Knicks squad allowing the Heat to go get steamrolled by the Bulls. Knicks were a THREAT that year!! Jordan said it himself.
Yea. PJ Brown flipped Charlie Ward is what started it. And for the young cats, look up Charlie Ward on the football field. Back then, NFL teams were blind to his talent which absolutely made no sense at all. He was a special 2 sport star at FSU and was a solid NBA player for years. Respect to Charlie Ward.
@Will Clinton as much as I respect Ewing it is true that Hakeem and Shaq were better. David Robinson was probably better too but not by much, an argument can really be made there. Robinson always had a much better supporting cast than Patrick.
I mean, name a current player avg 25, 10, and 3blks. You can't. Ewing did that over a 6 year average. Hakeem did it even more than that. These type of greats don't exist anymore.
This video details Patrick Ewing's Hall of Fame career respectfully. Of course he fell short against the likes of the great Michael Jordan and the amazing Hakeem Olajuwon if you look at his career. But one thing was for certain, Patrick indeed displayed his tremendous heart night in and night out. And as a Knicks fan, I will always respect that. The 1999 1st round playoff series against the Miami Heat displayed that heart. Hobbling up and down the court. Patrick had no business being on that floor throughout that 5 game series. Knicks don't beat the Heat without him. He still outplayed his fellow Hoya Destroyers in Mourning and Mutombo during those 1999 playoffs on one leg.
I think Patrick Ewing is one of the most underrated players of all time honestly. It's weird how a top 50 all time guy can be a top 50 underrated at the same time too. A few of those 90's centers are really underrated imo. Alonzo Mounring and especially David Robinson are also underrated. I really loved all those great 90's centers. My fav era tbh.
You forgot stunted #4 2-18 i wont say that person name still hurts and takes me back to being 10 and crying lol but even tho Ewing didn't win a ring i still think hes too good for this even tho i did enjoy the video lol
As a former New Yorker, and current Knicks fan, Patrick Ewing did not win a ring because of teammates. Patrick never had his Scottie Pippen! Personally, I think Charles Oakley was an overrated bum! We needed an enforcer who can score. On the offensive end it was five on four basketball because Oakley's lack of offensive made it easier for teams to double team Patrick. Furthermore, the Knicks should have kept Rod Strickland and traded Mark Jackson because Strickland having the ball in his hand would have made the Knicks a more balanced team and play at a faster pace instead of waiting for Ewing to get in the post on every possession. It's hard to win in the playoffs when you rely on one person to win games for 20 years. No knock on Mark Jackson but he was too slow and a defensive liability
Growing up a fan of the terrible New Jersey Nets I always hated the Knicks. When I say hate, I mean hate with a passion too. But even with a Knicks hater, Patrick Ewing has the total respect of any NBA fan watching the game in his era. This guy was a legend and did everything right. It's a shame he doesn't have a few rings, he certainly deserved a couple of them. Poor guy was always surrounded by overhyped barely average players.
Man the Knicks either had tooo many power forwards or too many point guards Ewing didn’t win because he didn’t team up with Reggie Miller and Barkley to take on the bulls lol man them Hoyas team were tough what’s crazy is I always thought Georgetown was a hbcu because of the basketball team lol I was a kid
Ewing kept losing for the exact same reasons Malone, Stockton, Barkley, and many other superstars never won a ring. Ewing is not more of a loser than anybody else. he never had another great player in his team. there is 30 teams and only one can win the title at the end of the playoffs. one team win, every other lose. so when a single team won 6 in 8 years, there is not a lot of room for all the other superstars....
But unlike all the other names you mentioned Pat played with the least amount of talent for a superstar, possibly of all time. Ewing doesn’t get the credit for doing basically what AI & LeBron did in 2001 & 2007, but for his entire career.
@@johnnyblingg Excellent takes on your part. What AI and Lebron did for those seasons you mentioned were amazing NBA moments. Ewing although he fell short of that coveted ring, had amazing moments throughout his career. I think fans almost forget that an old Patrick Ewing was still able to match or even exceed a prime Alonzo Mourning statistically when the Knicks took "3-out-of-4" of those playoff series against those Miami Heat teams from 1997-to-2000. Those Miami Heat teams were considered superior to the NY Knicks on paper.
@@toddsands6000 That’s why I don’t get the Ewing slander. If anything I think for what he’s done for his career he should be ranked ahead of some of his peers. Like to me, Ewing is better than David Robinson, Karl Malone, Stockton, and (even tho he’s my favorite player) Chuck, etc. Ewing brought NY to the Finals twice and he did it with less talent than The Dream, and is tied with Stockton and Malone for Finals appearances, which is also 1 more than Barkley. And i can’t reiterate it enough, Ewing kept the Knicks competitive for almost his entire NY career, with virtually no real talent, at least offensively. The best center of the 90s to me were Hakeem, Shaq, and Ewing. Tim Duncan saved David Robinson’s career.
Patrick Ewing did not get his ring, because the Knicks got the worst ownership in professional sports!!! How rings the Knicks got since Pat left ~ remember the Georgetown years. The four years Pat was at Georgetown the greatest college basketball team of all times! He took Hakeem to school! Respect!
My aunt went to high school with him. I asked her if she remembered him & she said he was a quiet kid but obviously very tall so he was very noticeable. Also mentioned he wasn't too cute either so she paid him no mind. Told her you missed your golden ticket. Smh
His is a joke right!!! Next we will see a Michael Jordan stunted growth or a Shaquille o'neal stunted growth. Patrick was a beast and carried that franchise. He is a hall of famer for a reason
Acting like Ewing was a bust or something! lol He put the Nicks back on the map but shiid, you had the Bulls, Pistons and the Celtics putting the Eastern Conference on LOCK in the 80's/90's. He wasn't a loser, anyone besides Jordan, and Bird would have had difficulty battling those teams.
Exactly, Patrick Ewing carried a franchise for a decade and was always competitive. Imagine if had a Reggie Miller level star on his team. He simply didn't have any other talent.
Let's bifurcate this stunted growth thing 1. Theres things within your personal control. And 2. Things beyond your personal control. That said 2 of the 3 you mention fall into the second category which is where a lot of whining comes up. ( and Patrick doesnt.) A. Opponents more gifted and intense ie jordan 🏀✅ olajuwon robinson ✅☑ B. Lack of a supporting cast equal to the challenge not provided by management ✅☑✅☑✔🆗️ and I'd add too much rotisserie league tradesmanship teams got to gel. . The ship be sinking team comes to mind under hubie b. The riley years the cast was solid and relatively stable but not as talented individually too many 1 dimensional players. Ditto the van Gundy era . Coaching styles and his game He was more a 4 on OFFENSE and a 5 on DEFENSE . Could he change ? I'll get to that in a moment. C.⚕ Injuries: knees , Achilles, wrist ✅☑✅ . Only the latter is somewhat under his control of the things you mentioned. ( Rest big fella you tried too hard ). So heres how I differ on this stunted growth thing with P.E. and how he "couldve " won .( apologies to RILES SORTA on woulda, coulda, shoulda. ) PE was a turn around jump shooting center in a then non high LOB 3 an spacing league . Great turn around jump shooter " the best " ever BUT HIGHLY PREDICTABLE !! And a double teamers dream . No sky hook . No LEFT HAND, NO JUMP HOOK TO THE LEFT AND ONLY FAIR TO THE RIGHT . NO MCHALE SIKMA OR DREAM SHAKE MOVES ? WHY ? WHY ? His game did not grow ? Coaching ? Or failure to develop an imagination about how to grow his game ? He will have to own that ? NEXT . rebounding as tough as he was he relied too much on his jumping ability . Didnt get under (to the baseline ) people for offensive boards rebounding numbers dont lie . . So heres my summary : Came into the league as a shot blocker ala russell, moved to 4 with Cartwright, developed a turn around jump shot, moved to the post after C Wright trade. Still shooting turn arounds . NOT utilized properly with that skill set . 🔧🔨 tools in the wrong position in the bag. "SHOULDA " PLAYED MORE HIGH PICK AND ROLL PICK AND POP. LIKE A LAIMBEER He could shoot facing up. !! WITH HOUSTON SPREWELL THOSE SHOOTERS. DIDNT HAPPEN. He has contenders lament like survivors guilt ptsd but the SWEAT I STILL SEE!!! . GOD HE WORKED SO HARD!!! ONLY TO BE A PERENIAL CONTENDER that burns my heart but not as much as his. Great character great warrior great person and yes still a champion( ncaa ) but ...... we wanted more and so did he . Bulls pacers rocket spurs lakers nightmares.
You do know that Pat played most of the 1994-1995 season on a bad leg, right? That layup against the Pacers in the Eastern Conference Semifinals had nothing to do with heart. His leg finally gave up on him and he couldn’t get up high enough to where that would’ve been a usual dunk of Pat’s.
Simple answer: MJ Question: Is MJ the MOST LOVED AND HATED NBA Player in history? A generational dream killer for players AND FANS during his NBA career. Think of all the great players AND cities without titles during his run. Just a thought.
“AHLOWSEEUS” 😂😂😂😂😂😂 ummm no dude ALOYSIUS is pronounced “AL-OH-WISHES” Patrick Ewing is my favorite basketball player of all-time, and as a diehard Knicks fan, I cannot allow you to butcher P-Ew’s name! 😂😂😂 I just scrolled through all of the comments and not a single person pointed out your mistake. So I’m guessing they just don’t know how to pronounce it themselves or they didn’t notice, either. So I am here to bust your (basket)balls about this. I have never laughed so fucking hard in my entire life….. I like your videos and your channel is pretty good, but if you’re worried about how to pronounce a name you’re unfamiliar with, you can find how to pronounce it on Wikipedia and I believe there’s a function on Google that allows you to hear how something is pronounced if you’re still unsure. It takes all of 45 seconds to research that. Sorry, I’m not trying to come off as a dick, but one of my biggest pet peeves on the planet is when people mispronounce names. I’ve gone my entire life having to deal with people butchering my last name, and I’m just easily irked by this. I just find it very lazy and unprofessional that you don’t bother to get the names right, especially when you put so much work into your videos and making sure you have correct information. I watch all of your stuff, and this is the first time I’ve seen you butcher a name, so I guess I shouldn’t be so damn harsh on you, as your work is generally phenomenal I guess it’s my Virgo ♍️ perfectionist nature that triggers me 🤷♂️, but mistakes like these should never make it this damn far. You should’ve caught this mistake at some point in the editing process. It’s not like you were on live television and flubbed. Please, sir, from now do your due diligence and make sure you’re saying things correctly!!! Or I will be back to let you know how you fucked up! 😝
I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. A stiff, who didn't have cable TV until I was 18, so my NBA viewing was unfortunately limited to national games, and Sonics road games.
I have a SONICS 33 EWING jersey! I was SO excited when we traded for Pat Ewing. I knew that he wasn't the 25ppg guy anymore, but I thought that he could have been 15 points, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks for us.
