Disgaea 5 has so much rich gameplay over all ,and the story was really well done in my opinion. The main character isn't the best. But they could have improved him more if they wanted to make him a dark character. The best boss I have ever liked in the disgaea series is Bloodis such a badass voice and appearance. All the main characters had unique story to them just like D4 except D4 was a little better story wise. Nonetheless D5 remains the best for me. I can go back and replay it hundreds of times.

Great video! I've played every Disgaea game except Disgaea 2! I'm definitely going to check it out. I felt about the same way you did, except I would probably put D2 higher up on the list. But now I'm wondering if it isn't the awesome gameplay improvements and return to the original cast rather than the story itself that is weighing on my opinion. I really loved how the evolution of the Disgaea gameplay in D2 and Disgaea 5. I had only played the beginning of Disgaea 4 but your video made trade my copy of D2 for the Disgaea Triple Play collection so I could check it out!
I don't play Disgaea for the story, I don't play it for the characters, I play Disgaea because it is one of the few games that manages to make grinding fun!
That's a no-brainer. The quality of a Disgaea game is determined by how much Axel it has in it! In descending order that's 4, 2, D2, 3, 5, 1. Unless you count the PSP version of 2, which has Axel mode, then 2 is better than 4. Easy peasy lemon squeezy!

I was thinking of making my own list. Buuut your list is exactly like mine. :P I really love Disgaea 4 a lot. Every single character is unique, and I love them all. Currently playing through Disgaea 5 on Switch, and all the DLC is already there, so that's not a complaint for me. I don't really love the characters yet though (I'm in chapter 9, so no spoilers, please), but Killia is really growing on me. The gameplay is really unmatched, however. I honestly look forward to doing the post-game in this one, since it looks like there are a lot of things you can do to make grinding go by easier. The item world is fun and has tons of variety and special events, and the fact that you can skip every animation with one button-press like in Disgaea D2 is so convenient. I love this franchise so much, and I can't wait to see what they do for the sixth entry.

Disgaea 1 had the best plot and characters by far, the other games had more mechanics or better gameplay but they never achieved the same thing, I remember back in the day how disappointing Disgaea 2 was when they introduced the main character. The thing is, to make the series survive they always had to recycle Laharl, Etna, Flonne, Gordon.
I got introduced to disgaea through the 3rd Game (I didn't recognize Mao's va, thought it was habberkorn) I fell for mao immediately. I want to get my hands on the rest of the series.
It's best to get your hands on a PS Vita for 1-4 because you can play all the best versions on it. (the PSP versions of 1&2 digitally from the PSstore and 3 & 4 for vuta.) The Nintendo Switch version is definitely the way to play 5 at this point.
I honestly say anyone who thinks Disgaea's story is anywhere close to top is just looking for a love story and nothing else. The story does have a great premise, but the amount of padding in the game is unreal to the point that it should've ended chapter earlier. Adell is very flat and doesn't develop at all as a character, and well...he's not funny in a game that is mostly comedic with a strong story underneath. It also has a lot of the gameplay issues the first game had. Disgaea 3 definitely had a stronger story overall, with a character essentially having to not only cope with death, but also their own involvement in it, and the series's usual "don't judge by it's cover" being done very well in that game. And Mao is just....more fun. He's a character that they aren't afraid to actually do silly things with, whereas Adell is just played way too straight. That being said I do still think Disgaea 4 is probably the best one, with both a good story and the updated gameplay. And I don't deny that there is a good (great even) idea in Disgaea 2, the whole story of Overlord Zenon is absolutely great. But it's a game with a great premise that doesn't really have a story to go with it. There's just 'so' much padding. It's the only game in the series I actually stopped playing out of boredom. (yes, I watched the rest of the story...and it drags even 'then' compared to rewatching the other game's stories) The game probably could've used a lot more development for Overlord Zenon that wasn't essentially 3 short scenes and the end of the game.
Back in the day, my cousin bought the original Disgaea for me in exchange for a bunch of coke music furniture. Over 1000 hours and a shut down website later, Best trade of my life.
This series is absolutely amazing. Wonder what Disgaea 6 will be like. Hopefully keep almost all the game mechanics from 5 but have better and more interesting characters. Also have any DLC characters, if from earlier entries, be fan favorites. Not DLC characters where we have to try to remember them or research them.
It's nice to see my first Disgaea game at it's place. I'm really interested in the others thanks to Disgaea 5. And I can understand you not liking Killia. He's not for everyone.
I've noticed a lot of fans of the series who joined in late always prefer the 4th one. I have been playing the games since they came out and many people I talk to who have also been playing the game just as long have similar lists to mine. My list from best to worst. 1. Disgaea 1 2. Disgaea 2 3. Disgaea D2 4. Disgaea 4 5. Disgaea 3 6. Disgaea 5 Most other people lists I've talked to since the beginning 1. Disgaea 2 2. Disgaea 3. Disgaea 4 4. Disgaea D2 5. Disgaea 3 6. Disgaea 5 Mine is only slightly different because I really like the original tri and their story as I find theirs was the most original.
ZanPlays why do most people put disgaea 5 in last Place? I mean it had hands down the most refined gameplay mechanics out of the previous titles. Sure the plot is a tad simple and not as engaging as D1 and D4 not to mention the main protagonist in D5 is also boring and always serious most of the time but imo I really enjoyed playing it. The only reason why many people considered D1 as the best because of the great plot and characters ( I also agree with it) but the gameplay Mechanics and visuals are the worst.
I've been playing since the PS2 era, myself. Disgaea 2 has always been my favorite. I've recently played Disgaea 5, though, and I must say that it's my second favorite! I love the characters, and the game mechanics. Disgaea 4 is my least favorite though...
At 11 mins in. I'm calling it your top two are D2 then D4. You've chosen well. Although I've only played D1 Ds version, D4 and Prinny I can be the hero. I'd say D4 is the best of the lot
Hello Azen, after watching this video I want to try Disgaea, do you recommend me to play the games in release order ? Should I play Disgaea D2 after Disgaea 1 even if the game was released many years after ? I purchased D1 and 2 on PC, 3 and 4 on Vita, D2 on PS3, but should I buy D5 on PS4 or wait for a Complete version (like on the switch) ? Do you think they gonna release the switch version on PS4 ? Sorry for the many questions, but with this video and the PSN discounts on the games, I now want to play every Disgaea games.
If you have the ability to, I don't think it's ever a bad idea to play games in their release order. Right now you probably have the best versions of each of the games except for 5. Speaking of which if you already own a Switch you may as well get that version unless there's a sale on the PS4 version and/or its season pass. I doubt they'd make a 2nd Complete game, but if they did it would probably come out next year. The Vita versions of 3 and 4 came out about 3 years after the originals so since 5 came out on March 2015 so it could happen though again I doubt it.
Sadly I don't own a Switch even if I need one because this console have some good J-RPG coming up I think I just wait and see for Disgaea 5. It's gonna take me a long time to finish all Disgaea games (I usually do the platinum for every games I play and do all the side-content), so maybe in this time I'm gonna buy a switch, or we gonna have a good discount on the PSN. The season pass is actually 34,99€ (around 40 dollars) in my country (France), it's way too expensive. So yes, I just wait for a good price. Same for D2, I don't know what to do for the DLC, I think I'm just gonna buy the characters that I like / are usefull before I start the game. I need to stop planning what to buy before even playing one of the game, that's so stupid and a waste of money. but I'm not too scared about liking Disgaea, I usually like Nippon Ichi games.
Disgaea 2 so far probably has the best music (also best opening) and voice acting (god I love Tink's), but Disgaea 4's story is so rich (just finished the main story), it goes to places you don't think is going to. disgaea 3 is probably the worst one so far, I'll be playing D2 shortly so we'll see...
Storywise, they're all pretty much standalone, but if you're new to the series it might not be a bad idea to play them in order. Also, consider starting with Disgaea 1 Complete if you have a PS4 or Switch.

My favorites are Disgaea 2 and Disgaea 4, too, with the latter taking the lead due to superior gameplay. Storywise they are fairly close to each other. However, Disgaea 4 has the worst soundtrack in the series for me, with Disgaea 3 having the best (didnt yet play Disgaea 5, tho). D4 would be nearly perfect with having a better OST. Not a single song, well except the opening obviously, was as memorable as for example D1's My Comrade or Battle of the Eight Beat, D2's White Tiger or D3's basically anything. I find the default base ost in D4 to br really lacking, too. Still, D4 has the best cast overall (really liked Valvatorez, Fenrich and Emizel) and I loved that Axel played a part in the main story, like he did in D2. The DLC characters were the best part of the game though. Tyrant Val, Gig, Priere and Pirohiko were among my favorites, only Gordon and his crew were the only truly important characters I felt needed to be included, but I could live without. Overall, D4 is my favorite too
Rozalin plot twist worked better because they revealed it at the beginning then tricked the player into thinking it was a complete falsehood by the fact Rozalin herself did not know the twist and all game you were being lead with multiple false facts that would lead you astray until the last chapter when u realize the game "was rigged" in the sense u never had a chance to guess the outcome. with Killia it was never hidden that he was something big in the past and i had him pegged the first time Zeroken shows off this legendary technique instead of being impressed or curious, his exact statement would lead you to believe that he had something to do with said ability. another thing to note was the relevance of Rozalin's twist being that it tied in directly with the antagonist where as Killia's back story was more detached from void dark.
So I haven't played any of the Disgaea games since they jumped off the PS2, but you said Killia and Rosaline share a certain plot twist... if it's the one I'm thinking of, I doubt sincerely that PARTICULAR plot twist could be done better than it was with Rosaline. I'm excited, though. With NIS porting them to PC and releasing them on Steam, I may finally get to play the other games! Disgaea 5 is probably at the top of my 'want to play' list, but I've been steadily keeping an eye of 4, and your list just pushes it up just a bit more.
Well, I'll just have to wait... or dig up all the cutscenes to D4. Though honestly, even if I dig up all the cutscenes, stuff gets lost. I don't have the attachment to the characters and the like.
I'd figure. I've probably seen a bit more of D4 and D5 than MAYBE I should have... but eh. I'm excited at the prospects. D5 interests me a great deal particularly since I hear it de-emphasized throwing, which to me means one or two more monster team mates instead of their relegated place as team mascots.
Never played 3, 4 or D2, but I did played and finished the other 3, starting with Disgaea 1 on the DS. Out of those, my least favorite is Disgaea 1, then 5 and my favorite is 2. The main plot of the first game is really good, but there's also a lot of filler chapters that just weren't interesting at all. There's also very little difference between each playable class and a lot of the maps just felt like stat checks, with very little regards for actual strategy besides flooding some choke points. Beated everything on the post game for the main game, and the main story of Etna mode. Story on 5th has 0 filler from what I remember, and it's overall pretty solid, just feels a bit too on the "safe" side, though I like how the main characters evolve gameplay-wise according to the story. The gameplay mechanics are amazing during the first playthrough, but they merge together and break everything on the post game, making all your units basically clones of each other, with the exact same stats, skills and passives (called evilities here), the worst part is that you need to make the most optimal use of those said mechanics to beat some challenges (I guess this is a good thing? idk, it's boring, grindy and takes away each character's uniqueness imo). And I think some chapters have very long and boring maps. They are definitely more strategy-based than the 1st, no doubt there, but there's a lot of unnecessary walk and wait turns, but the good ones are good, and I like the Netherworld efffects. Each unit fills a unique roll and rewards you if you use them correctly, they feel very balanced in this way and none of them is obviously better then the other (except for Shamans, how the fuck do you level up Shamans? Tower attacks? Nah, bad idea), which is an aspect that the first game seriously lacks. Beated almost everything from this game except for Carnage Baal (because fuck that). Now the second game, oooh do I love that game. Interestingly, it's the one game I had the least contact with. I played a bit on a borrowed PSP from my friend, then I tried emulating it on the PC, and I managed to finish the main story of the PSP version (got stuck on Axel's story cuz I didn't level up any generic units) then I stopped. Years later Disgaea 2 PC launches and I finish it again (now only with generic units. Yeah I benched all the main characters except for Etna at level 50 or so), breezed through Axel's story, and beat almost every post game boss and map except for 3 of them. Now to the actual review of it, shortly said, everything is outstanding. The story is thight, it has the dry humor from the first game, the characters, main or side, were all great, with clear motivations and interactions with one another, their personalities all unique and "Disgaea-ish", way less filler chapters than 1 (actually none I think?). Gameplay wise there's a lot of stuff that got introduced here, like evilities (don't know if this is a PSP exclusive thing, but it was my first interaction with it), tower attacks, moving geo symbols, separation of monster weapons into 2 categories (ATK and INT based), and a lot more. That combined with this game's exclusive content, like the pirates carrying maps running havok on the item world, felony system, cell phones, and the best feature ever, the Dark World (more on that later) makes the game feel unique and fresh, even after going back from 5. Like the 5th, no unit is obviously stronger than the others and that stays true even in post game, because you can't bloat everyone's stats to the point of unanimity and there is no evility customization (which could be a downside, but the game is balanced around this lack of intricate management, so it challanges you in other ways that just unit optimization). You can see some of this effect on the main story. They make good use of Geo Pannels in a way that both teaches you how you should approach a map and how you should confront each enemy, making each map more of a strategy puzzle, and therefore more mentally challenging and fun than the 1st and I'd argue even more than the 5th. I'll talk more of the post game and the "best feature ever" Dark World on the next comment, too much text here already.
It's been a while since I played it, but I don't recall doing a lot. I did it when there were obvious levels designed to help with grinding, but otherwise I thought it was pretty well balanced game.
I have to go with: 1. Disgaea 4 Valvatorez is just awesome. 2. Disgaea 2 3. Disgaea 1/D2 4. Disgaea 3 5. Disgaea 5 Wasn't a fan of 5's characters much to be honest.
To start off, it's awesome to see a series that has so many opinions on which game is the best and worst, and most of them it's hard to even argue with, because they all have such strong points in different ways. D4 is probably my favorite, the gameplay is still great unlike D1's very aged systems, and I loved all the characters (especially Valvatorez). Disgaea 1 is still my favorite story though, but that might be partially because of nostalgia, I'm looking forward to D1 Complete to see it again. D2 was the only one I really didn't care for, the characters were really boring to me, the gameplay wasn't much better than 1, and I don't even remember any of the characters besides Adell and Rozalin, and that's mainly because of their appearances in the other games. I love D5 because of the gameplay (The revenge gauge was amazing, made stuff like Val turning into Tyrant Val way better than just having him as a separate character), I thought Killia was neat, Sera had some cool character development, the final boss was really cool, and that was about it for me. It's currently my most played because of the Switch version, though (The vita was too small, gave me hand cramps, so even though I loved D4 I only put about 850-900 hours into it as opposed to around 1500 on D5) SO, D4>D5>D1>D3>DD2>D2

Disgaea 3 My list based on how many hours of enjoyment i got out of them, when my 560 hour playthrough of 4 got deleted by my brother by accident, i leapt back on it and got too land of carnage in 100 hours :) i never played a disgaea game more than 4, other than the original and la pucelle.
Also, Disgaea 2 replaced the Statisticians with felony and no one liked that. It also had a lvl 9999 Nekomata exploit. I used that exploit and got one. But I don't think either me or my bro unlocked any more of the post game past Laharle since it was locked behind item world RNG. With unluck it would've just taken forever. So I think 5 is better.
The reason this list is so difficult is because people like each disgaea for different reasons. I love disgaea D2's game play but dislike the story. I love the original disgaea's story but hated the item world. I loved disgaea 4's characters but the story dragged a little bit. I love all the games, just for different reasons.

I really don't get why people love Adell so much. Is it because he's basically not like any of the fun goofy Overlord main characters? Maybe that's why there's so many people who rank Disgaea 2 so high and all the fun story characters get ranked so low...like you either like Disgaea 2's storyand then it only loses to gameplay , or you like all the others

I'm pretty sure the timeline goes 5 -1-D2-Infinite-2/3------------------4 Four has to be a LOOOONG time after 2 because Flonne is very matured in her appearance. Unless that happened due to title acquisition it would have taken hundreds of years for her to get like that. I believe that Disgaea Infinite is a little story starter for both 3 and 2. We can see Mao screwing around with no implication that 3 has happened yet. On top of that, the infamous pudding incident happens in this game which triggers Etna to go off on her on in the events of 2. It also shows Flonne reapplying to become an angel again. By post game of Disgaea 3 she's already succeeded. I believe that the stories of Disgaea 2 and 3 happen around the same time period, as well as around the same time period of Makai Kingdom. It is BECAUSE of the absence of Hanako in D2 and the fact that Laharl still isn't fully established as the Overlord that I believe D2 happens before Disgaea 2. By 2 there is no doubt that he is the Overlord. His canon level is 2000 by then. No demon in his Netherworld can stand against that. As for his sis, I figure she could just be back in Celestia during the events of Disgaea 2. That's my idea of how things go anyway. XD And of course Prinny and Prinny 2 happen in an alternate timeline where the normal ending happens. Funny that Etna was destine to lose her pudding no matter what.
I started with 3, so I have more of a soft spot for it compared to pretty much everyone else. I've only played about 70% or so of 1 and still need to played 2(wanted to played it, but I was getting into persona around that time). 4 is my favorite story and character wise, but 5 is easily the best gameplay, despite the weak story. D2 feels like a filler story.

When I want to get Disgaea 5, I want to get the complete edition on the Nintendo Switch. I've been getting into the series ever since I played 2 on PS2, and I've been playing so many hours on Disgaea 4 on the Playstation Now Network.
it was 2012 after the Dark Souls 1 phase came and stayed its welcome for too long, i already played the game of the year Journey, some great games like Dishonored, Max Payne 3 and worst games like HItman Absolution and x-com. at that time, I found myself at a niche game store selecting some games for dirt cheap prices, and i saw some very niche game that had the aesthetics that i always wanted, the price was low, and the rating was great, this was too good to be true. but my all fear faded away when i started the game, i didn;t sink many hours in it but i surely completed it, and loved it so much i knew i would never play it again, so instead i bought the Disgaea 3 on vita to experience more of it, and then bought ALL the PS3 DLC's to it. I'm of Course talking about Disgaea 4 A Promise Unforgotten. and then the Vita Version. in fact this one game made me buy all the games, even The Guided Fate Paradox, all other Disgaea games, even 5 on PS4 Limited Ed. and Switch version. but i never finished anyone of them, i don't even know how the 5-th plays, or is it really good.
i can't say much since i haven't finished a single Disgaea game but this is my list: 1.Disgaea 1 (i've played the most of it and it has the best story i've seen so far) 2 Disgaea 5 (only at chapter 3 but function trumps story n this games case only) 3. Disgaea D2 (even though i've never played it i just love what i know about the story and it's a true sequel) 4. Disgaea 2 (it's better than 3 and 4 but not the rest) 5. Disgaea 3 (i've only just started it but it's more appealing to me than 4) 6. Disgaea 4 (was the 1st Disgaea game i played and i just don't like the story 2, 3 and 4 are kind of a tie really i jusy put them in this order for the sake of ordering them)
for me it would be 1. Disgaea 12. Disgaea 43. Disgaea 24. Disgaea 55. Disgaea D26. Disgaea 3 D1 may not be perfect gameplay-wise, but for me, its story and characters blow every other game away. D4 has a nice story and great gameplay, but it wasn't as zany as the pure fun that D1 was. D2 is like D4, but with some characters that I saw no point in and Adell was a good protag, yet kinda boring.D5 is more of a mish-mash of D2 & 4, but doesn't hold a candle compared to the two. Overall a pretty solid game.DD2 was pure fanservice. I wish it had a better story befitting a sequel of the 1st, but it sadly falls short.D3 is fun, wacky, and completely forgettable. The story is both short and kinda linear. There's not much depth to it, more focusing on the Disgaea franchise's brand of comedy than anything. still, I love this franchise more than anything. It's my favorite game series and I hope it continues on in the future. Disgaea 6 when tho.
I have disgaea 4 and to be honest...I love it and may beat it first out of all I have [missing 5 and DD2 and I haven't completed 3...I can barely keep my attention]
I rush to post game. Never play with named characters and I'm not that interested in story. I skip cut scenes and do not read dialogues. Played 1,2 3,2.1,4 and 5 for many hundreds of hours each. In terms of gameplay 5 wins hands down But if story or character is important to you you might think differently.
