3:46 : "Ducati sells underpowered bikes compared to the competition" :-) Streetfighter V4 a 208 PS naked bike, Diavel and XDiavel 160 PS cruiser bikes, Superleggera V4 234 PS sports bike but ok it seems some people already lived in 2030 future and took the DeLorean to come back to 2020 and make a video :-) Overexpensive yes, underpowered compared to the competition no. Or in the US you have detuned versions at Ducati shops which i am sure is not.

I've been riding bikes since the 1970s. ALL of them had carbs until recently, and I never had to touch the carbs in all that time (and yes, I did do virtually all my own maintenance - including a full strip down of an EXUP). I didn't balance the carbs, but that was something I left to a pro who had the guages. Seeing as that was only done IIRC, every 48,000 miles, it hardly classifies as a biggy. The idea that you would fiddle with your carbs on a regular basis makes me think that you have no idea.

@davidcolin6519
@davidcolin6519 2 года назад
@@johnengland8619 Yeah, and how often do you do that? I occasionally ride into the Pyrenees, so what? My experience is that you only really start to notice the power drain from elevation when you get to above 1000m of elevation, and even then it's only really noticeable when you're pushing on. With the exception of those extremes, the "problems" of carbs are extremely exaggerated. I didn't actually claim that carbs never need adjusting, I said that "I never had to touch my carbs". After over 1m miles of running mostly carbed bikes, I can honestly say that I can only think of a couple of times when altitude seriously affected the performance of the bikes I was riding. And one of those times was with a bike with FI. You see, even FI has its limitations, if you're not getting the air into the cylinder, even the perfect fuel mixtures afforded by FI have their limitations.

The panigale superleggera is literally one of the best racing style motorcycles you can buy. 650ib has a HEAVILY customized V4R and he said the superleggera felt much lighter, more powerful, more responsive. I’m not saying it’s really worth it for the average rider, but there was an extremely high build cost, so you are getting what you’re paying for. For most of my riding life I had bikes with carbs, and they worked fine when they're' were set up right. The problems started when misguided fools removed the air box, and fitted pod filters. Carbs, especially CV carbs, need a large reservoir of still air to function correctly. The only exception was highly tuned two strokes. Having to re-jet your carbs to stop your pistons melting, just because the weather changed, was a total pain. (Haha).

The trick I've found to project bikes is 1) to go in with realistic expectations and 2) to NOT have them be your primary bike. I love wrenching and fixing old bikes (my current projects include a '74 BMW and an '81 Suzuki 450), but I also have a modern, fuel-injected, runs-every-time motorcycle that is what I ride most of the time. Sure, it's great to take the BMW out sometimes and enjoy how much better it runs now, but my primary enjoyment is working on it. If I had a project bike as my only bike, I'd grow resentful of all of its issues keeping me from being able to ride, especially with how short the riding season is here in Maine.

I’ve always been ify about no title bikes and project bikes. But for my luck, I found a 2016 R6 with 2k original miles and a clean title, it was a awful fatal wreck. The whole front end was missing and the rear wheel was shattered into pieces, I paid $150 for the bike itself plus $300 in all the missing/broken parts I replaced including all the plastics, thankfully to some dude in the ghettos “randomly” having the parts I need 😂(I don’t even want to know we’re this guy got them from). The bike is currently fully functional and I daily it. I will admit the cluster doesn’t work for some reason and the horn doesn’t either. Had 2 Ducati’s in 2 months... first one 848 evo corse, second one 1199S dark stealth. While they were amazing to ride, they spent more time in the dealership getting worked on than my garage and had more miles on a trailer than the odometer when I got rid of them. The 848 had such a bad transmission that when I tried getting my money back del amo Motorsports told me they can’t because it’s a salvage title.... that they sold me off the show room floor 2 months prior.... and me not being smart enough to just eat the loss, I financed an 1199S through them that guess what, had major electrical issues.... Still, I don’t blame Ducati because if every Ducati was as bad as those 2 they wouldn’t exist anymore. Pretty sure the dealership knew damn well they were selling defective bikes and knew just how to milk the lemon law regarding motorcycles. Of course, I also had to bring both bikes back to them for repairs a total of 6 times in 8 months plus once for the first service on the 1199S. I still miss those bikes though. Someday me and the 1199S dark stealth will meet again.

Man, thats unfortunate. I have a feeling you're correct about the dealer knowing they were lemons. Also, salvage title concerns me, no idea how the bike was treated or what went wrong. My experience with Ducati has been perfect. I bought an 08' 1098s ten years ago with only 3000 km on the odometer. It has never left me stranded. Starts every time, although it may take a couple of cycles to get cranked for the first start of the season after 3-4 months sitting over winter. It has never been in the shop for any reason, aside from scheduled maintenance. It currently has over 45k on the odometer. Any manufacturer can produce problem bikes. Have had an awful experience owning a Triumph. That bike was always breaking down or having issues starting(Still sits in garage to this day, hasn't started in 4 years). I had constant troubles with a Honda CB900 back in the late 80's. That thing was always breaking down like the Triumph Thruxton. Only bike that I have ever owned that was as problem free as my 1098s was a 99'Kawasaki ZRX1100. Now that bike was bullet proof !

The 1199 they gave me some BS story when I bought it that the previous owners wife made him immediately get rid of it with 141 miles on it. I have a China “Chonda” bike dual sport. The RPS Hawk 250. After $500 in upgrades they do become a decent reliable bike. You must have some mechanical skills owning one because no one will work on them. Upgrade’s that need to be done is the carburetor, adjust valves, air intake system, performance coil, iridium spark plug, modified exhaust, chain and sprockets, tires and tubes, and changing instrument cluster (that doesn’t work) with a digital cluster with rpm gauge and gear indicator. All can be done for around $500 and minimal mechanical skills. I’m a ASE certified tech and it was super easy compared to the 6.7l Powerstroke Diesel engines I work on 50 hours a week. After the upgrades it will not be the same bike. Top speed of 70 mph it is perfect in city/HWY and trail use. People on Hawk groups on Facebook and Chonda rider forums have cross country with these bike. One traveled from Wisconsin to Mexico with a Hawk 250 with a couple of hiccups nothing major but did the job but did his upgrades. But all in all the Hawk 250 is a great bike and after modes it can be as dependable as a Honda with its CG cloned engine. Little patience and love….

I had over 40 bikes in the 70's and 80's, obviously all carbed (Mikuni or Keihin), singles, triples and fours and never had to touch the carbs on any of them, ever.

It's a bit harsh on the Ducati. Ducati is a luxury item and it should be treated as such. The price itself should discourage genuine petrolheads to buy one. Ducati is for wealthy people who loves bikes and want to look good, they are not necessarily bothered by the performance. It's like saying don't buy a Ferrari, a Mercedes AMG goes just as fast and it's much cheaper. Apple and Oranges.

During the season I do track days almost every other weekend. The slowest guys are ALWAYS on a Ducati or a 1290 Super Duke. Never fails. It's a lot of fun passing them corner after corner and then they use their 180hp to pass me on the straight and doing it all over again... on a ninja 250.

"Removing carb(s) every couple of months" Dafuq? Seriously. I had my carb off about 2 years ago due to an intake seal failure. Before that, maybe 10 years before I had it off for a reason I can't remember. The only other time I had my carb off was right after I broke it in and re-jetted.

I wasn't too surprised that you brought out the mto7's dyno chart to compare to the r6, but I thought for a second you were gonna really flex on 'em by showing the street triple lol. The street triple honestly has the cleanest dyno chart I've ever seen.

I lived in NH where a title is not needed for any vehicle that is 15 years or older. No issue with registration, inspection, or insurance. just a bill of sale and a previous owners registration and the bike is legally yours. the only problem would be if you were trying to sell out of state and that state required a title. In state, all set.

I have carbs on my bike, never had to clean them or rebalance them in 5 years and she runs sweet as a nut. Maybe you just aren't looking after yours or riding it enough?

Getting so disappointed when i hear spites voice. Sadness :( maybe it should be mentioned in the title, so one is prepared 🙈

I bought a motorcycle that has its title and everything but it does not have the original owners signature. I tried contacting him but he never answers. What should I do.

I understand. In 1976, being of unsound mind, I bought a Ural 650. Six weeks later, I sold it, not running, for less than half of what I paid for it, and felt I'd got off lightly.

Disagree on the Carbs, they are fine and no they don't need to be cleaned every 3 months unless you run crap gas and don't put stabilizer in it when you park it for an extended period. Its been years since i have yanked the carbs on my old bikes, they just work. Totally agree on Ducati, been there done that and have the empty wallet to prove it. Great bikes to ride but otherworldly expensive to own.

@@AT2Productions I had a Multistrada 1200 and i rode it a lot in the 9 years i owned it. The $2500 valve adjustments every other year and the cost of other worn out parts added up fast. Things like the $400 rear brake caliper when mine seized, im just glad i didn't need a disc since you have to buy the entire rear wheel to get one, its like 2k. The last straw was the fuel injectors that were $430 a pop just for the injectors plus install since i don't have access to any real diags for it and melco diag is a joke. They are like no other to ride but also like no other to keep running if you hang on to them a long time like i tend to do with bikes. For comparison I probably wont put one valve adjustments worth of money into the Africa Twin i now own the entire time i own it.

@@TDub_ADV I have an 05 Monster, it hasn't been the maintenance hog that many claim that ALL Ducati platforms are, and don't forget that your bike had a detuned SBK engine. But you are a prime example of why I say that the brand has gotten a slightly undeserved reputation. As you had/spent the money for a mechanic to do the work that I've been doing on my own. Also, it seems that you had a Gen1 Multi-1200, what first generation bike doesn't have issues and gripes? And with all of that you still had it for an admitted 9 years, interesting. Also, you've admitted to transitioning to a different brand and platform that you aren't on the Gen-1 of it's iteration. So what other flawed comparisons shall we quibble over?

I got a carberated bike and a fuel injected bike and it's more reliable than my fuel injection one it makes more power and is a lot easier to work on than my fuel injected bike and all I need to fix my fuel injected bike as I can fix my carberated bike with just a Philips screwdriver, bubble gum and a pair of pliers

I guess it depends on the bike. I have a DRZ400 that had to have the carb rebuilt twice in 20 years and had a 94 CBR600 with 4 carbs that never gave me a problem.

I had a 2015 Multistrada 1200S. To read the mags, you would think this the best m/c ever made but: the SkyHook suspension is trash - the bike wanted to do tank slappies all the time; the throttle maps in 1st and 2nd gave no power until 15mph and then not much - any old lady in a Prius can outdrag you at the lights, except every now and then it would have a brain fart and give max power with no warning leading to a wheelie into the car in front; the bike is made out of cocoa tin - the clutch slave cylinder leaks so you have to bleed it every 1,000 miles, I did an oil change at 5,000 miles, the magnetic drain bolt was covered in bits of metal, the largest 3/16"; parts repairs and maintenance have to be done at the dealers or the warranty is void - megabucks. Now I have a KTM. Let's see how that works out. At least it has decent suspension.

I own a chinese bike. Their quality is improving. Also, the Hawk 250 dual sport has fuel injection. The CSC RX3 and Rx4 are fairly decent bikes.

I buy alot of carburated projects no title box of parts and a frame. You just need to know what you are getting into and have the knowledge or the desire to learn how to fix or resolve any issue. I strongly disagree with your take on alot of this. My first bike was a 1975 cb750k that was just a rolling chassis engine and a few bits. I didn't know shit about bikes or how anything really worked. But the joy of lerning reading fourms and watching countless RU-vid videos. It grows into a passion. I rebuilt the brakes replaced the oil pump cluch and bearings found and bought everything it was missing and part it together into my own creation. Made a sweet cafe racer and drove that illegally without a license until I was cought. Since I've bought and sold dozens of classic bikes that didn't run missing parts or had no title. I fix them and resolve their no title issues(has to be over 12y/o here in michigan or 6 for a off road bike) enjoy them and flip them. And yes I seriously enjoy rebuilding a nice rack of 4 carburetors and tuning them perfectly to run that way for years.

My new 2020 yamaha mt07 requires me to sync the throttle bodies on it at I think 4000 miles and again at 12000 or something. Not much different then on a carburated motorcycle that you maintain correctly.
