Apologies for the bit where I stop the video dead to deliver a pitch for a video game lol. One of these days i'll pull a list like this off without going on a long tangent about something xD.
May i say keep the tangents, kind of make it part of your thing, dont force a tangent but dont stop yourself, it shows your personality and helps these vids not feel too dry en emotionless as some lit vids can be, just an idea
They're on to me! xD In all seriousness though, I really think the human designs are just perfectly done in ME, really interesting visual style overall. Cerberus stuff looks cool too, I like the way they basically just have angrier looking versions of Alliance Cruisers and Fighters.
Seems odd that Geth wouldn't design a utilitarian shape -- cube, cylinder, etc. Maybe the wasp-ship was someone else's design, and the Geth just ran with it because it was easier than designing new?
Wonder if there is enough lore for you to do an episode about how Humans in the mass effect universe stunned the turians with the introduction of space based fighter carriers
The real stunner was why those carriers packed so much of a punch: humans introduced the disruptor torpedo as well. No other race was crazy enough to take the rarest, most precious substance in the galaxy and deliberately hurl it towards their enemies!
@Bogey the Bear Uh the humans didn't introduce the disruptor torpedo. I don't understand where this claim came from honestly. The Codex makes no mention of humanity being the creators of disruptor torpedoes.
Except the other races already have carriers in that their cruisers carry fighters as well. Human carriers were just made to get around the ratio restrictions on dreadnoughts in the Treaty of Firaxen.
@@warellis Except that what the humans invented was a ship where the main weapon is fighters. Cruisers can transport fighters but thy're not their main weapon.
...Am I the only one who actually likes the exterior appearance of the SR1 more than that of the SR2? I just really love how the “wings” can move and shift around.
I like Geth and Quarian ships. Normandy is badass, Alliance cruisers look good and sleek. I will never understand why we never got to see Salarian ships. Or any dreadnoughts besides the geth one.
Yeah, there are many races whose ships we never got to see: Salarian, Hanar, Batarian, Volus, etc. Thankfully the fine folks at Koobismo's Workshop made their own very convincing 3D models based off the visual styles associated with those species. You can see those in Marauder Shields Episodes 37 and 40 on Deviant Art.
Ugh, same. I was really impressed by the System Alliance ships- the cruisers and Dreadnoughts specifically. It really is a shame they didn't flush them out more; we only really ever see the outside except for one or two cutscenes on bridges.
The Tempest is pretty nice as well. Maybe a bit too "style over function" on the inside, but the outside lines are great and the place where you stand as a Pathfinder commanding the ship... Has to be one of the coolest spots ever in science fiction.
It really is a great thing how you can see both the human and turian design elements in the Normandy, yet it works so seamlessly as a ship unto itself.
Looooooove the idea of a Mass Effect fighter game it would be so much fun. I always thought the game missed huge potential with not allowing you to pilot any ships, shuttles or fighters.
The Desteny Ascention always looked to me like it could be streight out of Gene Roddenberrys Andromeda. It has the same majestic huge look and almost organic hull lines ^^ The Kodyak Dropshuttle is a great design as well. It is compact, has a clear role and takes perfect advantage of the Mass-Effect premise of Element zero and reflects this perfectly in its design. For me the best ship in all of mass effect exactly because of that. Most other ships like the Normandy for example look like they could exist exactly as it does even with out the mass-effect-fields. But the Kodyak shuttle really shows how a hard sci-fi techno bubble with an clearly defined fantasy element and otherwise trying to stick to actual science can affect design choices and make the premise even more believable. The Normandy SR2 is indeed a beauty. Only downsides are the Window like things on the hull which were not really explained and are clearly no windows because we don't have them on the interior. Otherwise i as well love her but i prefer the Cerberus interior with the Conference room in the middle, the full Hangar for vehicles and cargo and the Science lab rounds out her mission profile. A few minor changes i would still use so my small Interior refit would include: The Armory i would change into a smaller Armory room with security access and weapons lockers and the rest of the room i would put a second security room with a table for interrogations and maybe one or two small prison cells. The Captains Quarter i devide in two rooms with the current desk area and bath being the XO's Quarters and the rest from the stairs on the Captains quarters. It is still big enough to hold a big bed, a smaller Bath and a desk to work on. Same for the Xo'S althrough a bit more cramped. The current XO's Quarters i would either use as mission specific Area or include a small corridor and make one VIP or two bigger guest Quarters from it. The current Life support i would hide behind some panels and include a larger quarter for one person (like the chief engineer because of the window to oversee the engine core) in the back of it where Zane is found. The Crew Quarters stay as they are but the Beds hidden behind some walls so four crewmembers share one small area hidden behind a door so there is more privacy in comparison to now. The starboard observation lounge i would rip of all those seating and instead include a small gym area as well as a VR Globe area for the freetime. It would use the holographic tech to create a virtual reality which fools the user as good as possible for masseffect technology level. It would be for one person at a time to relax or train in. The port side stays the same as it is in ME3. The lab i would divide in one Bio/ chemical lab area and one tech lab area. finally two ladders to the right and left of the central lift which go through the whole ship instead of those ladders and jeffrey'S tubes she now has and she is perfect. She is not too big but can pack a decently sized crew. She has all things one would need on a ship like Medbay, a few shuttles, Weapons and shields and unlike her predecessor even a bit space for the crew. And still she is small enough to land on many planets and if the planet has to high gravity she has her shuttles. I am really sad we never got to see her landing gear. And yea i know we don't know if she has Landing gear but i believe she has. The Position as well as design of her Hangarbay with the door out to the front would otherwise make little sense if it wasn't designed to actually lower a ramp to drive out of the front with a ground vehicle. Also it is stated that she is build to carry out the same tasks as the SR1 could and that she can't land on all planets which means on some she can and we see her coming close to the ground on Earth and illium. Also she is a stealth fregatte after all and you know what would be stupid? To not include Landing gear so the ship can touch down on a planet, power down and use the Atmospheric and topographic interferences to mask her position. Especially if she is obviously able to enter many Athmospheres and get close to the Ground as we see many times. Again to the Technobubble of Masseffect. It is one reason why i still love the Games and its lore. Mass-Effect does this really really good by introducing one fantasy element the E-Zero and explaining many many sci-fi Elements with it like FTL travel, artificial gravity, weapons technology like mass accelerator cannons hell even their telekinetic science fantasy power Biotic abilities can be explained by this one Element they made up and its abilities. In opposite to StarTrek where they make up a new techno bubble for every techy problem they come across in Mass-Effect nearly everything can be explained by real world physics with the addition of the one single made up element zero.
Truly love the the Normandy SR2...It look like something that can dogfight, AND slug it out with capital ships in a highly maneuver intensive running battle...And big enough to operate by itself for quite sometime...And would be a treat for the eyes to see an entire wolf packs made up of these ships hunting and killing capital ships and screen fighters and other frigates... Hell, you could consider them Destroyers and it would fit well.
Thanks for another great video, Spacedock! I know this video clearly covers ships from the original ME trilogy, but I was wondering if (or rather when, knowing your content) you're planning to do a video on the Andromeda Initiative's TEMPEST Pathfinder Scout Ship? I figure you are probably are waiting for further details or playing through the game at the moment (as I am, and loving it), but I would love to see a video on it eventually! Also, good point about "hero size" ships. It's a point I hadn't quite ever considered.
Playing thru MEA right now and loving it, video on the Tempest is not currently scheduled but once I've finished the game and done some research i'll throw one on the roster for the future.
I really like both Mass Effect Andromeda and the Tempest in it. Overall layout is quite nice, but see-through walkways with no railings? I'd bet somebody would break some bones. But the spot where the Pathfinder stands to access the map? Great place! Also the external lines are almost better than those of the Normandy...
I really love your channel! Regarding requests, basicly an and all B5 ships. Especially the Vorlon ships. Thanks for all the hard work you put into making these videos. Its obvious you have a ton of knowledge and its spread basicly across all SciFi! Keep up the great work
Hmmm does anybody else see that a bunch of stuff from mass effect looks and is aquatic? Like the reapers look like squids and cuttlefish, the geth ships look like shrimp, the asari ships from above look like manta rays, the omega from mass effect 2 looks like a jellyfish and the leviathans are also aquatic; just a thought.
Leviathans are essentially sapient sea monsters. The reapers are made in the image of the leviathans. Omega station wasn't purposefully designed to resemble a jelly fish. When space on the station became tight, construction began outward The devs actually based the geth ships on wasps
I imagine doing a top 5 based on the Mass Effect universe would be difficult, we don't actually get to see many ships from the various races which is a shame despite hearing about them. WILL SpaceDock be looking into MEA ships sometime soon?
The biggest problem I see is that ME fighters and point defense are all based around auto-targetting lasers. They could ignore that for a game, but I feel like take away from the feel of Mass Effect.
As a Mass Effect fan. Personally this franchise needs more ships for all the other species. When I would play ME I would often imagine me with a ship of my own and I would have me as it's captain and a Turian as my second-in-command and Krogan as my bodyguard/third-in-command.
Which class of destroyer? If it's the Halberd, same class as Iroquis and Heart of Midlothian, that is a pretty cool vessel. If it's the other classes, both look rather derpy. Derpiest ship in halo is the Covenant Destroyer. That thing is literally a flying space dick.
No love for the Turian Frigates? It actually *is* the AK47 of Starships in Mass Effect, because it seems like just about every one of the non-council worlds fielded at least one of these things
Echoed my thoughts compeletely with the description of the ideal 'Hero ship' size. It's not just how they make the pilot shine, though, it's how they become symbiotic with the pilot. They also need a good name. Btw I expected a Rocinante video sooner hahah.
Yeah i'd say the smallest ship in this ideal range is kinda YT-1300 Light Freighter Sized, with Star Trek's Defiant Class coming in at the top end, the Normandy falls nicely in-between these. And yeah there will be a MCRN Corvette video before the end of Season 2's run.
You actually do see the Destiny Ascension for a short moment in ME3. If saved in ME1 it shows up at the Battle of Earth and is shown when jumping through the mass relay instead of the Regular Asari Cruiser.
Wernher von Kerman you only see her for a quick second jumping in joining Sword fleet hitting Earth. It's too bad you don't even get to see her actually fight, it always stuck to me when Ashley comments about the size of the Destiny Ascension's guns from ME1 but never see them in action on screen.
okay new subscriber earned. I absolutely love Mass Effect it's probably my favorite Space Opera video game collection 2 come out in the last 10 years if not longer. I agree with you on many of the used pics especially the Normandy sr2. However I do want to point out one little thing with the Normandy that I must bring to attention. Now again I love this ship. But I have to say that the vessel has one at least in my mind major design flaw. In order to get to any of the various decks from the personal cabin of Commander Shepard all the way down to the cargo bay you have to use a single elevator. This is actually a very bad idea. Because if people need to escape there's only one way to do it. aside from that it's an absolutely brilliant ship. I love it's very Sleek almost Aquatic Design it's just big enough on the interior to make it feel homey and not claustrophobic I also like how unlike the version from Mass Effect 2 or the original Normandy it's much brighter on the interior. The original Normandy was very dark and that was part of the reason why I felt it was very claustrophobic. the Normandy pre refit was brighter than the original Normandy but unfortunately it suffered from a rather bizarre layout.
What gets to me about sci fi ships what’s the glowing squares. On the Normandy we know for a fact it’s does not have a bunch of portholes but it’s covered in glowing squares. This is a strange thing about all of sci fi covering the rough parts of a hull with glowing squares of no particular description. It’s kind of like the first person shooters with the stealth suits that are covered in glowing green lights
I think a dreadnought should've been on the list. -5 capital ships like the Destiny ascension -20 dreadnoughts -40 cruisers -30 carriers -60 wolf pack flotillas of frigates (20 frigates each flotilla) -60 support ships of supplies for fleet and living space for troops etc. -2000 fighters -1000 interceptors -600 dropships -1mil troops An unstoppable force I think, I think enough to over throw the council and it's allies
I would say the maximus class carrier looks really gorgeous Wish we saw ships like it in the game but who know maybe the next game will have cerberus return
Nice work. I would like to see some more Warhammer 40k ships at some point. And maybe some Imperial Titans for your Planetside series... Anyway, keep up the good work!
It's a pretty ship, certainly. But I felt bad about my personal quarters being four times the size of the crew dormitory, which was horribly inadequate for the number of people aboard. No wonder the krogan slept in the galley...
I would LOVE a Mass Eefect dogfighting game. However, with your idea, you lost me at Cortez... only guy from my entire crew that I wanted to toss out of the airlock. But I still want to see Mass Effect do what they originally wanted to do... a prequel taking place during the First Contact War.
I feel like the turian cruisers deserved a spot on this list too, alongside the Destiny Ascension, Normandy and Alliance cruisers, they're probably one of the most recognizable ships in Mass Effect, and considering the turians have the largest fleet in Citadel space, there's no shortage of them.
great picks, it always bothered me that you never hear or see much on how the larger ships work (destiny ascension) or look like inside (alliance cruiser). I love these designs and wish they did literally anything more with them. the wiki is basically a copy paste of the codex which is unfortunate.
1) Thank you for keeping Andromeda separate. 2) The problem with dog-fighting in the Mass Effect universe is that their point defence weapons are ridiculously effective to the point they have to swarm them with fighters and hope some of them don't die. They could always adjust the game balance, as it's paradoxical to the other cannons because the Earth Alliance became a powerhouse by using carriers to loophole the treaty that limits Dreadnoughts. The Treaty of Farixen.
I personally dont have either Normandy in my top 5. not because i dont like them, but because they blow anything else in the ME universe out of the water in these lists.
The Alliance Dreadnought was Everest Class before the Fleet-Refit and Kilimanjaro Class afterward. It's the cruisers that we don't have a canon name for. :)
My biggest problem with Sr2 Normandy interior is the bridge? Why are there so many consoles/seats along the edges of the bridge and around the holo-table? I remember counting that there was enough chairs and consoles along the outer edge for every member of the crew in ME2 to have a seat on the bridge. That aspect of the design seemed completely insane for a frigate of the normandy's style.
Great list, I myself put Normandy in my top 5; 1. Romulan Warbird Valdore 2.Enterprise E 3. Normandy 4. The Defiant 5. The Viper fighter_(New)Battlestar Galactica Honorable Mention- The Andromeda.
the new cruiser class is only named once and thats dueing the lead up to the final battle if you play a war hero shep it is mentioned at some point that your mother is serving on the new class under hacket its the new york class
I think the tempest now tops the sr2 in looks and utility and no dam slow lift and the ability to look out of massive windows I know the ship is more of a exploration vessels where the Normandy was a war ship and windows are a bad thing but the view
Great video as always. Personally, I favor the SR1 over the SR2. It was more functional in its smaller size (it is a stealth craft after all). The more cramped interior highlighted the inconvenience of space travel and I loved the external shape and the articulating thrusters. But still, good list.
The Ascension just looked totally wacky and non-combatant to me. "Yeah, let's design our flagship to have a big open mouth so it can swallow loads of enemy fire the same way our species swallows all kinds of alien loads"
i built the sx3 in space engineers and outfitted it with rapid fire laser banks and a torpedo launcher it is my fave build only issue is its got no room for shields and it suxs in atmo
My top 5 for the original Trilogy goes as follows in 5th place we have the Asari Cruiser an example beibg the Nefrane I prefer this tothe Destiny Ascencion as it doesn't have the tall bit on the top in 4th We have the SX3 as shown in the above video in 3rd we have the Turian Frigate can't reallly say what it is about this that I like so much I just think it looks cool in 2nd unimagintive as it is it's the Normandy SR1 and in 1st obviously we Have the Normandy SR2 though if Andromeda were to be included the Tempest would take 2nd place and everything else would be knocked down a place
I liked the ME2 interior more than the ME3. The ME2 Felt more like a ship that was built with the idea of getting a job done where is the ME3 was far too much a command ship with the Tac-Ops, conference and communication rooms all being separate and the only reason you would want to go into them was if it was really part of the story (I mean heck, you only use the conference room once!) Then again, the ME2 interior was not without its own flaws either (definitely stupid to have the weapons locker on the main deck rather than the shuttle bay).
Raphel Stonesypher Krogan don't have ships of their own design, their only world doesn't have the industrial strength to support that. Probably decimated by the Council races during the Krogan uprising to ensure they can't expand into an empire.
