The trek top fuel has definitely changed through the years this year has become more down country and even more capable trail bike but has it lost its XC racing ability a little bit but it's still a good rowdy trail bike which will still be able to tackle those gravel and flat sections a lot faster than something that the fuel EX series would be able to do.

Thanks for the video, I just ordered my TF5 after a lot och back and forth between different models, I haven't ridden actively in about 20 years so I'm really looking forward to getting back into mtb 😃 I've been looking at and testing Specialized as well as trek TF7 and TF8 but since this is sorry of a gamble I went with the cheaper option, I have a bad knee so I don't know how del I'm be able to ride, hopefully I'll be able to exercise and build some strength in my knee but we'll see what happens 😃

Tip for RU-vid viewers - if any "experts" can only ever comment on weight as a main pro/con, they don't have the aptitude to give you any actual expert opinions because it's the only metric they can measure (anyone can bust out a scale). You'd literally get more information from 1 page on Trek's website than this guy. "If you were going to do DH parks then I'd prefer the Fuel EX over the Top Fuel" - wow, a real pearl of wisdom there... - No, that rear shock and Recon don't perform "really well" across the board. They perform decently if you fall into window of "average" rider weight and "average" riding ability. If you fall out of this median weight range (say 75-85kg) and/or ride a little less aggressively or particularly aggressively both then it's worth going up a level in spec as mid-range and up suspension works for a much broader range of riders. - Yes you can fit a tube in the alloy Top Fuel. All you have to do is literally fold the tube in a longer pattern instead of rolling it. It is especially easy to fit a tube in there if you carry 27.5 tubes (as they work for 29" no worries) or a TPU tube like Tubolito or Cyclami etc. - 31.8 bars are not heavier than 35mm handlebars. It's generally the opposite (as a larger diameter = don't need as much material for the same strength). Although that weight is super marginal

Hey Chris, thanks for the video- I found this very informative. In your opinion, do you think this bike has a much bigger advantage over the new procaliber 9.5 as a general do it all light riding bike? I like the 9.5 because it is so ridiculously light with the carbon frame ~25lbs or so. I got it precisely for that reason. However, I think that having a nice “light” full suspension would also be nice.

no, I’d stick with the pro cal until you can go higher end, otherwise your adding 10lbs with no part upgrades really
@126AP
@126AP 2 года назад
@@goodluckchrisclark dropper post, Recon fork and threaded bracket seem like enough upgrades to pay $400 more for the TF5 over ProCal 9.5. What are your thoughts? I’m also confused on which one to buy🤠

I see on Trek's website they have the specs for each size S-XL and they show the geometry differences when the Mino Link (flip chip?) is in either setting (High/Low). Which setting is better for XC and climbing? High or Low? Also, which setting does it come in from the factory?

How would you compare this to either Scott Spark 970 or Specialized Stumpjumper Alloy? Deciding between these 3 bikes.
@goodluckchrisclark

Both excellent bikes, Spark I think would be the fastest option not as bulky

The '22 EX5 does not have the internal storage compartment. I thought it would be a cool "get" but at least this far in the model year, it is not a part of the frame. The bike seems to have a late 'steer-in' on turns and feels a little lethargic, but for me, it is my first full suspension and first mountain bike in over 25 years. I anticipate it will be a great recreational bike that will handle 99% of my needs.

Yes it will do everything well but not perfect, definitely odd they didn't add the storage unit

Same. I just brought a 22 EX5 in the UK and i dont have internal compartment either. The best bike in years so i can overlook the compartment lol

I see you respond to many questions. I'm not caring about weight. Currently training on a 39lb giant sedona dx, considering using this to train on mostly fast flowy, but root filled trails and then race a lighter carbon hardtail. My local shop is offering me this bike with bontrager xr2 for 2400. thoughts?
@goodluckchrisclark

Definitely a nice price, and will ride better the the old Sedonas

Spark is honestly a bike i'd love to ride, not sure but id choose whichever is lighter the Trek is 35lbs!

@@goodluckchrisclark yeah, I think the trick is still more of an XC but the geo is really surprising. so much overlap! thanks again.

$400 dollars more than a Pro Caliber 9.5 for a full suspension, better fork, dropper post and threaded bottom bracket. I’m considering buying Top Fuel 5 now. What are your thoughts because of only $400 difference?
@goodluckchrisclark
@goodluckchrisclark 2 года назад
Big thing which is a downside is the weight for the TopFuel, comfort I'd do TopFuel speed I'd do procal

I'll tell you who this is for....someone who wants to move from 134 position on local strave leaderboards to maybe 87....and is willing to compromise some of the capability on downs when traveling with a bike. or someone who is not fast enough on chunk to warrant 140/130 or bigger set up. It's not about elevation change ....it's about how fast can you hit that chunk. Hence more aggressive geo with less suspension. Bike for 95% of riders and in carbon form for 100% of dentists.
